    Good to know! But don't forget about hardness too - since corundum is one of the hardest minerals on Earth, it should be able to scratch just about any other mineral (except diamond).

    • @austinfreyrikrw6651
      @austinfreyrikrw6651 Рік тому +8

      Gemmologist try to stay away from using the scratch test for obvious reasons. Mineralogists, however, have no such restriction as they do not typically deal with expensive gem quality specimens.

    I used to have this beautiful oval cut deep blue sapphire ring that my grandmother gave me for my birthday, but the gold band got crushed so I put it in my grandmother’s jewelry box to keep it safe until we could get it fixed, and when that day came it was missing. We never found it 😔

    Great advice, yes, eyes first. I trust the refractometer. Look for hexagonal banding, curves show synthetic. Thanks for sharing.

    I'd love for you to feature white sapphires as a diamond alternative. Or just do a video on selecting the best diamond alternative for durability and value. So it's for the purpose of enjoying them as jewelry where the same sized diamonds would cost a fortune.

    I know it's unaccesible to most, but the best (most definitive) method would be to acquire a quick raman spectrum, or chemical composition with XRF or EPMA.

    Never been a fan of the blue sapphires. Pink are my favorite or the bronze star. When it comes to garnets, the tsavorite a green garnet is my favorite. I have a 50+ carat gemmy rough one. I refuse to have it cut. This video makes me appreciate sapphires more though.

    How do you tell the difference between a lab created and natural sapphire?? Does anyone know!

    • @9fiveb180
      @9fiveb180 Рік тому +3

      The growth pattern of the crystal structure will be rounded or wavy on the lab grown, and straight lines on the natural.

    • @austinfreyrikrw6651
      @austinfreyrikrw6651 Рік тому +3

      Also florescence may be different between natural and synthetic stones.

    • @austinfreyrikrw6651
      @austinfreyrikrw6651 Рік тому +2

      A total lack of inclusion suggests synthetic, warrant for sending the sample to advanced lab for further testing. Also fluorescence patten may differ between natural and synthetic stones.

    • @kobyphillip3874
      @kobyphillip3874 Рік тому

      So the wavy lines of a lab grown and the straight lines on a natural are visible by using a lube or just by looking at the stone?

    hello good day and happy new year greetings from connecticut you know i would like to ask you please i used the diamond tester the presidium multi tester 3 on a rough blue sapphire. It is gigantic but the tester gives me as if it were a diamond and it is in almost all the rock. Could you guide me a little more about this? Diamond. Thanks for your patience. I have the basic tools but I don't have a microscope to see it in more detail.

    That was wonderful, but what if your stone is lab created. What helps us to determine if its a natural or lab created stone. And not all of us can afford or have access to any of these machines. i have a loupe, but thats it. Sapphires come in so many different colors naturally, and you talked briefly about dichroism, how do we know how to facet a gem, to bring out the best color possible?

    • @gems
      @gems  Рік тому +3

      There are a few observable indications of a lab grown sapphire, including curved growth lines and little torpedo shaped growth bubbles...but these aren't always apparent, nor the same for different growth methods. Spotting synthetics can be very complicated. We've touched on it before, and will do again...The same can also be said for cutting methods to bring out the best color, but we will do our best to address that soon.
