    I used to watch Brum, at my bourding school back in 1994, the reason being that my school was a special one for kids with Autism (I have Aspergers) and yes I did also go to mainstream as well, where some of the other kids were somewhat 'less able' thus we would also watch the more 'younger shows' (as I used to call programs made for toddlers and babies) which the teachers would tape for them, and I think that we did have one or two of the VHS tapes as well (can't remember which ones though).
    As it stands I actually quite liked 'Brum' (yes me and my friends, who were on the 'more able' end of the spectrum did make the playground joke about his name...) and to this very day I remember the show fondly, not only as a show but also as a part of a very happy time in my life.
    As a long term Whovian (I go back as far as 1997!) is it just me or does Brum look a lot like a pint sized 'Bessie'???

    Brum and the Helicopter (the season 2 premiere episode) was the first episode of Brum I saw as a toddler. Even I was astonished and amazed at the scene of Brum being lifted into the air by a helicopter - no CGI, all completely done in live-action!

    For me, when it comes to Brum, I was for the most part someone who watched the three seasons that aired in the early 2000's, but I have also seen a few episodes of the first two ones with Toyah Willcox's narration. I honestly just accept those two sides of the series as different takes on the concept - the first two seasons being a simple one about Brum going around the Big Town taking part in some of the mundane and regular activities that the citizens do, while the later three being a fast-paced superhero comedy series where Brum goes around trying to stop the criminals and being a badass while going after them. I will definitely say that I'm not into the CGI reboot; it feels too safe and overly saccharine.
    But I can agree with everyone that the song "Brum, Brum Gets Things Done" is unquestionably the best thing to come out of the later three seasons; no denying how awesome it is. As I don't fully recognise what some people have against those seasons, feel free to explain why below.

    • @retrogamelover2012
      @retrogamelover2012 2 роки тому +2

      I mean, there were some things with the 2000s series, that felt like it really just jumped the shark multiple times. And there were also some things that kind of rubbed people the wrong way (even myself included).
      The 90s one had a bit more of a wholesome and warming aspect, that I guess made it more timeless by comparison.
      Perhaps if they did some revival that was like a perfect blend of both aspects, and basically knew when to slow down and reel things in a bit, compared to the 2000s series that kind of felt like it didn't know when to stop, then maybe it'd probably fare better.
      Like, it can have some of its action regarding the local criminals, or something going wrong, in around half or so of its episodes (just without any major jump the shark moments), and the rest having that more laid back, slice of life aspect that went on in the 90s series.
      Possibly with even a few twists or spins to those formulas, like a more fast-paced action type of slice of life episode, revolving around a race/competition, and a more slower-paced, suspenceful or even slighty darker criminal episode, like Brum assisting a detective with solving a crime, or even an episode where Brum has to stop a mad bomber from causing chaos around town.

    • @retrogamelover2012
      @retrogamelover2012 2 роки тому +1

      Though, with that last one about the mad bomber, and how that's still a touchy subject these days, considering stuff like the Taliban and all that, I'd imagine the criminal essentially rigging contraptions akin to what Kevin from Home Alone would slap together, and having those bombs be stink bombs as powerful as the "El Mondo stink bomb" from Ed, Edd n Eddy.

      I could easily see a revival that was like a good blend of both the 90s and 2000s series, with its mix of slice-of-life and action focussed episodes (whilst knowing when to reel it in, compared to the 2000s series, that felt like it just didn't know when to stop), even having a few twists on the formulas in places, that I mentioned in another reply.
      Could even introduce new characters, as well as some classic ones, like Granny Slippers, Gorgious Gordon, Bob & Job, the tramp with the small guitar, Mr Brillow, Mr Ladidah, Mr Doolally and WPC Truncion, to name a few.
      Heck, I can easily imagine a few episode ideas with those characters, like a bit of a comedic take on the whole "one more step and he gets it" moment, when some group of arsonists cause some trouble, and one of them gets the idea to pretty much mess with Mr Brillow, considering he treats his gnomes like they're his children, or Brum having to catch a notorious theif, who was looking for a valuable antique trinket, only to have the twist be that Granny Slippers had the thing with her, completely unaware of its immense value, or even WPC Truncion having to deal with a loud-mouthed bully of a police officer, who was brought over from another town to help with things, as well as the ensuing embarassment the town's mayor and cheif of police would be in, when she and Brum pretty much issue the complaints about said officer's behaviour, and the obvious lack of background research that was put in, when they brought this policeman over to the big town.
      I could easily imagine a satisfying scene where WPC Truncion basically just really lets it rip on the officer, and basically giving her two pennies on the guy and showing him why he should not be trying her patience like she is. Possibly saying something along the lines of; "Now you listen here, you bloated dough-ball, you. I may not have been in as may life or death scuffles as you supposedly have in *insert town name here*, but I have earned more respect for my duities here in the big town, then you have probably clubbed someone over the head with this. *shows him her truncion* So you will know better, than to get me at the end of my rope. Understand?"

Plus it's funny to learn that the titular character's name is a reference to the city this was shot at. I always thought it's because the name sounded like the "vroom-vroom" sound we make when playing with toy cars.

    And yeah, even if the videos I owned of Brum were from the 2001-2002 series... I certainly enjoy the ones from the 90s more. Especially when I had more warm memories from what episodes I managed to see on the air, at the time.
    Though, at least with the 3rd series, it had a memorable theme that played at the end of the episodes.

    Brum is one of my favorite kid shows as a kid. I definitely agree with you. Brum should have a second chance to come back for more episode and series. The guy playing as The Big Town Robber name Andrew Davenport was one of the creators on that show.

    I remember Brum, I remember an episode or clip where Brum took this person through a car wash, 5yo me really got a kick out of that, though my memory of it isn't too great (it must have been about 12-13 years ago, I was around 4-5 then). None of the 90s episodes looked familiar so my best guess is that it's from the 2001 series

      Hi Ben - He was designed and built by Rex Garrod (he did a tv series in the 80s with Tim Hunkin called 'The secret life of machines' - available on UA-cam and also built Cassius on 'Robot Wars'). Brum was radio controlled by one of my ex colleagues, Brett Davis.

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who hated the early 00's Brum reboot as a kid. Though I do remember creating some crass "alternate" lyrics for the ending song. 😂

    haha I knew it was filmed in Brummy! Aren't there these spherical car-stopper thingys that he drives around at one point?
    My memories of Brum are very crude. For example, I never remembered music being in the opening.
    Edit: I had a copy of the 2000s show.

    when I was three years old living in the United States my parents would put this on because we’d get it over in the states and even back as a three year old I loved cars and I really loved the brum tv show I would watch it religiously whenever it was on my parents even taped it on VHS I still have that VHS tape that taped for me and some more I have a couple others my mom bought me the remote controlled Brum car I lost the car because I was very young at the time but somehow I still to this day I have the remote I don’t know how that happened but I just now found another RC Bram car on eBay with no remote so hopefully the remote works I’m going to put it on my shelf after I see if it works with my original remote first but Brum was a excellent show I really did enjoy it one of my favorites even to this day at 22 years old
