this sort of video could only exist in britain, and i love us for it
As a non-Brit, I can say, without a doubt, that the UK is the master of tv idents. Not a lot of countries can even compare.
5:17 - The fact that this one ident ALONE continues to get me choked up, TEARING up and actually CRYING a bit at one point REALLY continues to show how much ITV totally screwed up by not using this Ident and the other Heart themed Idents shown after it.
Whoever decided to not go with these really should’ve been fired from making such a boneheaded decision!🤦🏾♂️
The unused ITV idents were part of a group that were used. When Granada bought Anglia and Meridian and Carlton acquired HTV there was a clause to keep the names of those regions for a specific time so they had the ITV logo with the region for all regions as it would be strange for those 3 to keep their names but the rest didn't. An interesting fact is HTV had the Carlton ident but with the HTV logo instead.
This isn't correct - the hearts were already in use by the time that Granada bought Meridian and Anglia from United News & Media - HTV originally had the same style as the other Granada regions when owned by UNM, and changed to the Carlton style when Carlton bought HTV.
The unused idents do have regional versions for all regions, including the ones Carlton owned.
BBC: satisfying
Itv: love
Channel 4: power
I feel those BBC1 and 2 idents would've been perfect as temporary bridges between the 85/6 and the 91 idents. Kind of like 89-92 or maybe early 93.
That Channel 4 one though is dreadful, glad it was never used!
Yeah
the last one, the "triangle" 4 always bugged me because it has three parts! if they had wanted to simplify, at least use four blocks for a chanel four ident!
Besides the reworkings that have already been mentioned, one fascinating other bit of the "unused" ITV '99 set did make it to air. There was an unsponsored slide for the National Weather that featured this logo and the mini-heart attachment that was used in the draft but not actual idents... and when the Queen Mother died in 2002, THAT was what got used to lead into the weather where the usual sponsor intro would have ordinarily gone.
The ITV welder ident looked like he was crafting a fancy number 2. Maybe that's why that one wasn't used?
?
Many of the ITV ones were revised into the ones that were used.
Nice
Guess my annual ident review addiction has started for 2024
This is awesome! I never knew about the unused ITV ones.
*YOU HAVE A PFP OF A RICK ROLL*
The itv foundry one reminds me of the UK Gold one with the liquid gold being poured to form the gold brick. Still one of the best ones I remember.
I actually really like the way the BBC2 ident animates into the Roman numerals, but as you say in your narration - probably a tad too staid for the 90s? Not surprised the BBC1 ident never made the grade.
Actually the ITV heart logos at the station, star gazers and the foundry were definitely used in Yorkshire.
Yea I remember them as well they was definitely used down in Bristol especially the train station version it was on all the bloody time.
This was fascinating to watch! I've never seen any of these! Especially the BBC idents!
You know, if you look really close at the BBC 1 clock at the end, you can plainly see the Ceefax Picture.
I noticed that too! Glad someone else did!
Some of these were used such as the railway platform and foundry.
That unused Channel 4 logo did actually make it to air. Not as an ident for the channel, but as an ident for the Channel 4 News. It featured throughout 1991 and 1992, it's easy to find footage of it in use on UA-cam videos. In 1993 it was modified to revert to the blocks logo. It seems that when Channel 4 pulled the plug on the rebrand, ITN were lumbered with a shiny new set of titles which no longer matched the intended look of the station's branding.
The design principle was used yes but the actual ident itself never got used so it somewhat did survive.. somewhat. Most likely the news identity had been completed long before the idea was dumped.
@@geniusburger Yeah - the next Channel 4 News graphics after that were very similar, but used the actual 4 logo.
There are more unused idents, like the ITV 1989 idents for Channel/TSW/TVS/Ulster/Anglia/Granada, the ITV 1999 idents for Carlton, and Carlton's Emmerdale ident from 1996.
I like how you did the BBC1 clock which had a Ceefax background problem
The unused version were changed most likely by granda to streamline it more like carlton's idents who were going to go use that set but ditched it for the other cgi heart idents they used.
nah ITV commissioned the heart set...
and they kept not liking the result. They eventually made the commissioned company redo a lot of it rather last minute, and afterwards, after having all their work thrown away after their vision was neutered? They never ever took commissions from ITV again.
Carlton just mimicked the style of what was chosen in the end.
@@badcatalex Now thats just sad...
The itv ident remind me of bbc one circles ident
Why on earth did they think to use 3 blocks in the 4 logo? Surely the smart thing would have been to use 4...
Or Nine
The BBC Two one looks like a lift door :)
I Agree!
Just subscribed to this channel today, as I have been interested in idents, particularly from BBC 2. I was wondering, could you review some BBC 2 idents that themed particular shows, such as Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, Robot Wars and The Simpsons (all of which I believe had at least one ident based on it)?
Train was used in the south, foundry was adapted and broadcast
damn, the bbc lines and simplicity thing predicted both the future and W1A mocking it before it happened
Thoroughly enjoyed this one mate, another great video 👍
Hi Adam, great video! I was instantly transported to my youth by the music you've used. How did you get it and what's it called? I've pinned it down that I first heard it during Film '95 (when Barry Norman counts down the top movies) and suspect it was used on other BBC productions of that era but I've been unable to pin down the original version as you clearly have. Can you help?
If you're talking about the ambient music used on the BBC2 idents, then from what I can gather it's from "Atmosphere Music Library - Radio Themes and Commercials" -- from a comment on another video. I've yet track it down, but that might be a lead for you.
@@TakeMeOffYourMailingList Thanks for the response and the tip! I actually found it myself a few weeks ago. It's called 'Primary' by Murray Munro. Searching for it should bring a few UA-cam results (with glitches) and also a link to Discogs which has much better quality versions of just the audio edited to various lengths.
That BBC 2 ident looks like it came from the old Def II ident.
The itv idents were actually used around that time in some regions, albeit in a condensed form.
Actually the train ident wa used in part, the last 2 seconds became the blue heart corporate footage.
*was
Seriously, I don’t know what Channel 4 were thinking when they created that thankfully unaired ident. Another question I have is, Why did ITV chose to not air these heart idents?
I'm sure the one at 6:13 was used.
Is it blue? It looks more like turquoise.
It's veridian.
@@kel5787 Viridian
@@csstuff421 no, veridian is also acceptable.
Do a review of BSB idents from 1990!
Um, those idents from ITV were used. Yes, they were a bit changed, but still.
About that C4 ident: There was a video with a collection of old idents and bumpers that had that ident.
Found it! C4 ident is on 9:27 : ua-cam.com/video/D-HD1LVPaek/v-deo.html
I believe he meant those specific ones. Not the finalised versions
@@traeyboy529 exactly
The slanted 1 ident looks similar to Edna Mode's logo fir The Incredibles' costumes!
Channel 4 unused ident (better quality): ua-cam.com/video/8zcDFuL0LOw/v-deo.html
The ITV love heart idents remind me of the mid 90s ABC Australia versions using their 'Lissajous' logo
Great channel. One question. Do you have or know the link from I think Channel 4 shortly after it started - maybe a year or so where there is a quite fast synth riff with some candles? I have been looking for this for years. thanks
that’s a lido in south london or the south coast probably
I'm a bit confused by this video. Two of those ITV idents did make it to air as part of the generic look, albeit with different music and forming the local station's logo wrapped in the ITV logo at the end.
the bbc idents remind me of somthing i wuld of expected around 1997, mixed with newsnight and the radio one logo from mid 2000s
The 1 looks more like an I on the BBC 1 ident. The BBC 2 ident looking like Roman numerals was ok though.
2:34 looked like an update of the last black and white BBC1 ident 20+ years before.
Those BBC 1 / 2 idents are horrible. Judging by the lacklustre BBC1 globe and the transform to the "/" (number 1 that looked like a slash) it looks complete to me. The featureless number 1 does not work out of context of other text and numerals. They were trying to maintain a connection with the familiar globe but also make it look more modern. The "TWO" with the colour bars retained from earlier idents, again, a connection with earlier idents, but too lost in the semi-mechanical activity. It is so complex and does not give a clear indication of the spirit of the channel, unlike the later "2" idents with a series of fun and clever twists.
I hated the ITV heart thing, it smacked of a TV company that had just bolocked up regional TV trying desperatley to cling to still being "the heart of your comunity" or "the caring TV channel". it's as bad as what carlton were doing earlier with their "real local people" idents when everyone knew they were actualy a heartless national corperation (who david cameron worked for... not mentioning that for any reason)
I love the slanted bar BBC1 (to match the classic parallelogram logo which I still miss and don't buy their reasoning for replacing) and the ITV "Train" idents, and also your impression of a closedown announcer voice. The Roman numeral logo for BBC2 still looks too highbrow and I'm glad they didn't go with that. And the Channel 4 one is hideous! Totally out of proportion to the original 4.
The BBC took the ident a step further during lockdown , the ones i like are the Cats sleeping and coffee mugs around the UK
Between BBC1, & BBC 2, & ITV
3:56: *BBC 2'S TEST INTRO*
What is the music at the intro
I want to see it full
There's actually a clean unused c4 ident that I found before! I forogt what video is it but I saw it!
A better quality version of the channel 4 ident was uploaded tr3x productions if you look enough
I hated that silver ring around the bbc 1 test ident
I found a higher quality video of the 4 ident.
Bbc1 frist bbc2 two
Itv heart
Channel 4 block
ITV pool ident filmed at Saltdean Lido
What was ITV’s thing with using hearts in their idents?
Music for the opening credits?
"Primary" by Murray Munro.
Apologies if anyone has already mentioned this before, but if the BBC was planning to make the ident for BBC Two with a Roman numeral (BBC II), then wouldn't that mean that BBC One would have had a sans-serif I, not a Hindu-Arabic 1?
And isn't it just weird that the plan was a sans-serif logo for BBC1 (BBC I) and a serif logo for BBC2 (BBC II), but the actual final products are a serif 1 and a sans-serif 2?
The reason why itv didn't use those idents was because they were too long
Channel 5: I knew you didn't love me!
I'm a little surprised that these even managed to get out to the public since most broadcasting companies just don't give a damn about there past branding and indents.
3:56 when you have nothing to post on UA-cam
If they are unused where did u get them
The itv ident old one is Like valentine Day?
Because the ident of heart
How to find them
An illusion happened that the 5 logo was in an itv ident
none of them are great, which probably why they weren’t used 🤣
the itv ‘heart’ idents are just a visual mess
apart from the swimming lido one, which had promise, but the heart shape was a bit awkwardly done
What song is used in the intro
"Primary" by Murray Munro.
6:01 that’s saltdean lido
Ceefax is in The background
Oooh like this channel reminds me of apple masks old stuff
As Seen On The CBBC Channel And BBC1/BBC2
I died when he pronounces 1991 like nineeen niney one
I pronoune it ninety ninty onme
What is that song 0:00
Interesting - but C4 and 2 idents aside, the more cerebral and fussy the idents get, the less impact they have. The music is always a bit wish washy too. None compare with the experimental majesty of the 1970s HTV ident, or for that matter the quite wonderful 1983 Central TV ident.
In the intro, what is title of the music?
"Primary" by Murray Munro.
I found a higher quality Channel 4 ident

The font used on that ITV logo was just horrible...
y'all remember when the 1 was I?
It's a roman number.
BBC1 RED
BBC2 CYAN
BBC3 PINK + BLUE
BBC4 BLACK
If you're including the old BBC Three colour, don't forget the old BBC Two one: Purple!
They turned down those logos and now we have that BBC1 CRAPNESS
