Jake was so over that they had to cancel this program with him and Hogan because the fans actually liked Jake even more than Hogan. It's too bad because the work these two could have done would have been epic.
Jake got a few cheers for the DDT but he always did. But I saw a match between them and Hogan got the way bigger pop and there is no way Jake could have carried an entire company like Hulk did. However Jake was turning face. It was so clear fans did not want to boo him. They did cheer him when he faced Hulk. Face vs face matches are something Vince always was averse to back then. So they turned Jake face and had him feud with Honky Tonk Man who just went through the opposite experience. He was pushed as a face and the fans just hated him. Savage? Fans really started digging him and they turned him.
BTW I am glad Hulk and Jake did not have a big program. Sure it would have been nice for Jake to get the big pay checks. I may have been a big Hulkamaniac back then but I always liked Jake and if I saw Hulk kick out of the DDT and hulk up, I'd have been pissed. That would have destroyed Jake right there because he got a lot of mileage from the crowd with that move and if Hulk kicks out of it, it destroys its credibility. That move was too devastating to no sell or kick out of.
Jake the snake is one of those very few wrestlers that can captivate you with words even with the smallest mannerism If any man in wrestling deserves to be in the hall of fame it is Jake the snake Roberts
Performers like Jake the Snake, and Roddy Piper exemplify the true art in professional wrestling. There exists a spark in men like this that many of today's performers lack.
Piper and Jake were my favorite two wrestlers of that era. I also remember liking Rude’s promos too around the same time… it was like Piper, Jake, Rude, then nothing for awhile. Mic work made the matches back then, not the in ring stuff as much. I love the psychology of wrestling, I didn’t know that term until years later, but it is what made me keep watching week after week.
"How big were your arms when you were left laying?" Ha,ha,ha,haaaaah! Too fucking awesome. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Jake Roberts wasn't your typical WWF pro wrestler. He didn't look like he'd just walked out of the gymnasium, but that was the idea. He looked authentic, and he made you believe he could really do some damage to wrestler like Hulk Hogan.
This guy is an absolute genius, a pure natural talent. His character, a cold, dark, dangerous man. Maybe not even a man, possibly some demonic entity. He thrived in an an increasingly cartoonish atmosphere. It's every bit as relevant today. He's timeless. the true mark of greatness.
this had such execution, if he made his punchlines funny instead of chilling he could be a stand-up comedian. His mic skills are amongst the elite on sports - not just wrestling but sports, period.
Jake is so scary. That's not a joke. He scares me more than any other wrestler not because of his snake, but because of the way he eerily looks into the camera whilst he talks with his calm demeanour and also including small bursts of energy every now and again. I just want to point this out again, Jake Roberts is so scary to me.
During the 1980s, McMahon wanted to start a feud with (face) Hogan vs (heel) Jake, at a house show they had a match, in the era of where face got insane cheers and heels got insane boos, there was a mixed reaction from the crowd where half the audience where cheering hogan and the other half were cheering jake, McMahon decided to kill the feud before it even got a chance to start. This was sort of like the Attitude Era 10-15 years before it came. WWF was not ready to head in that direction.
It was really unfortunate for Jake. But I get why they had to end the feud. Jake was amazing. But Jake wasn't the draw that Hogan was. So it's not like they could put the title on him and have him draw 300 days out of the year like Hogan. And they didn't want to do anything to kill Hogan's momentum, because with any other heel, he would sell out two arenas a night with fans going nuts for him. Jake was just unique. It was unfortunately a business decision that had to be made.
I don't watch wrestling just heard this quote in a song and thought I'd check it out. This really made me want to find out what happened in that match, he is amazing. I'm surprised that wrestling fans don't talk more about him. I know a lot of wrestlers despite having barely watched any of it, but I haven't heard people talk about him at all.
Jake delivers so good you forget you're watching WWF. The fact he told Hogan how big were your arm's while you were laid out. (Jakes like ) 24? This dude is just built differently than the rest.
"I wanted to plant a little fear...if you plant grass you grow grass, if you plant rice you grow rice, I plant fear and fear will grow! If you have a man looking at you and he has a little fear in his heart, where does that put him but in the palm of your hand!" So many wrestlers have their Masters Degree in Delivering Promos, this man is the only one with a PHD!
Fucking-A Jake was the master of psychology and promos in the age of screaming at the mic. He sounds simultaneously like a cold western villain and the dirt kicking underdog you wanna root for. Man could sink you in a promo
I remember that. Which lead to Jake's eventual face turn months later. But in 91-92, there was no way anyone would've cheered a cobra carrying heel over WWF's top hero. Vince would've gotten the crowd reaction he wanted at that point.
Wow, Jake's voice hoarsened very quickly during his WWF days. Compare how he sounds here to how he sounded during his early '90s feud with Randy Savage.
You make a good point. You seem to be quite knowledgable about wrestling. 1992 was a weird time cause it was on the cusp of the steroid trials, then you see the emergence of guys who do not look like hercules (bret hart and shawn michaels) start to emerge. I think the fans were behind Randy Savage when he feuded with Jake the Snake, too bad they never really had that match that fans like me wanted at the time.
YOOOOUUU KNOOOOW MYYYY NAAAME

@@Milk-be4zn i think it’s a joke
This man was a pure master on the microphone. A-List actors can't deliver like this.
He would have been right at home in a Scorsese or Tarantino film
And he was working spontaneously without a script.
Jake was so over that they had to cancel this program with him and Hogan because the fans actually liked Jake even more than Hogan. It's too bad because the work these two could have done would have been epic.
thats how it goes with heels and faces in WWE

One of the best promo lines of all time
The line was Fire!!!
"how big were your arms when you were left laying, 24?

Such an impressive performance that even some actors can’t deliver.
Absolute A-List.
Such delivery... Captivating. All that is lacking in today's scripted promos is there in that one clip. Magnificent...
How Jake didn't didn't get a part of an sadistic hitman in an 80s/90s movie is beyond me
I plant fear, and fear will GROW.
Simply brilliant! Now, all we need is for that elusive Snake Pit segment (where Jake DDT's Hogan) to finally surface.
A REAL promo. Period
