  • Ivan Koloff was a true legend in the world of professional wrestling. In this never before seen interview from January 2004, I talk with Mr. Koloff about his "nephew" Nikita and how his relationship with the novice from Minnesota eventually led to Uncle Ivan's most important relationship. I hope this exclusive tribute to "The Russian Bear" will reveal the true heart of one of wrestling's most hated villains.

It is so crazy to hear him talk like this after years of watching him in his Russian bear character. Definitely one of the great wrestlers in the Golden Age and what I consider the best age of wrestling.

I had the honor of meeting Ivan at a Walmart in Suffolk, Va. He was doing meet and greets for a charity he was a part of. At the time, he said he was living in N.C. and a devout Christian. He was a sweet guy. R.I.P. 😥

I used to have a deli manager who claimed he lived in the same trailer community as Ivan. He remembered many instances seeing Ivan as a really cool guy, who would tell stories and sign autographs for the kids in the community.

Ivan Koloff was a great heel in both the NWA and WWF. One of my favourite memories was his feud with Jimmy Valiant for the NWA TV Championship. They had some great matches in Maple Leaf Gardens. RIP Russian Bear, and thanks for all the great entertainment.

I remember at the time I saw Ivan Koloff was the most hated man in wrestling and boy he was the top heel in all of wrestling and sure he defeated Bruno Sammartino to take that WWWF Championship. I really believe that he should be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. God Bless You Ivan Koloff.

It's great to hear Oreal Parras speak, rather than Ivan Koloff. It's just a side of him you never saw. Same thing with Scott ("Nikita") Simpson. It's when you really see that there is something behind the gimmick\character.

Loved Ivan & Nikita as a young fan in the 80's, but they had the least convincing Russian accents ever. The gruff, raspy delivery had no trace of a Russian sounding accent. Nikolai Volkoff's was more accurate since he was from Bosnia and could speak some Russian so the accent was legit. Either way; Great memories. RIP Ivan.

Wikipedia : Koloff was named as a defendant in a 2015 lawsuit filed by WWE after they received a letter from him indicating that he intended to sue them for concussion-based injuries sustained during his tenure with them. He was represented by attorney Konstantine Kyros, who is involved in several other lawsuits involving former WWE wrestlers. The lawsuit was dismissed in September 2018.

The original Koloff in wrestling was a Bulgarian and he was known as Dan Koloff, aka The Bulgarian Lion. He won the Diamond Belt twice. His active time in the U.S. was 1915-1930. He actually wrestled a bear for a whole hour, until he got a chance to get a hold of a rifle and shoot it. When they examined the bear afterwards, they found marks on the bear’s neck from Koloff’s hands! He was also famous for being able to bend a train rail around his neck...

I was BLOWN away by this interview. I remember looking him up on that new-fangled thing they called the "worldwide web" in 1997 or so. His site had audio of him saying something like "This is the Russian Bear, Ivan Koloff, and welcome to my site." He was using his real voice which was shocking because while I figured he wasn't a Soviet monster, I figured he was at least Russian, haha.
I'm so happy he because Born-Again. I won't drone on and on about it, but even an atheist could be happy for the guy. Even if you don't believe that God is real, you should make you happy that Koloff did and it made his life better and more peaceful. He seems like a really nice guy.
But man, my Reaganite butt hated this guy in the 80s! Total mark!

On April 25th 1983 Ivan Koloff was being lead to the ring by his
then manager Classy Freddie Blassie, I was sitting in the second
row by the ring steps and I was booing him as his name was being
announced. When he reached the steps and was about to walk up
on them he stopped look me right in my face a yelled out fuck you.
I then returned the sentiment and we went back and forth just before
he stepped into the ring to face Bob Howdy Doody Backlund for the
then WWF Championship belt. Three months prior to that I heard
the 'Wild Samoans' speaking english cursing at Andre the Giant in
the ring when they weren't supposed to know how to speak it. lol
I can see now that he wasn't a Russian and although I never got to
meet him I still have that in my memories. RIP Oreal Donald Perras
