As a Taiwanese person living in Taiwan, I do wish there were a line or two on how the US or the Western countries might not have come to our aid if it weren't for Taiwan's position in the global supply chain that has developed in the last few decades, semiconductor industry included. As much as we need and appreciate the support, it would be naive to think that these supports are not based on the interests and benefits of individual countries.
TW semiconductors industry is already in the hands of the USA. What else industry does TW have that is worth Americans fighting for? Meanwhile Mainland China is developing their own self reliance semiconductors supply. They will succeed before you know it. I wouldn’t count on the US to come to the rescue. I really doubt the US is capable or even willing to engage a full blown confrontation with China.
As an American I can tell you and all the people of your great nation. My country has your back. Most Americans stand with the Taiwanese people and your democratic government. Having traveled to both countries, China extensively, I find this documentary the perfect primer on relations between the two countries and the dilemma it poses for the United States. Well done.
Domestic political decay in the US is the root cause. Corrupt and rogue politicians divert attention on their incompetence and failure to fix domestic issues by diverting US voters on imaginary Enemies, serving their masters in Millitary industrial complex. Taiwan has always been able engage peaceful discussion with China. Sadly, infiltration by foreign agencies in Taiwan is so dangerously deep that such peaceful engagement opportunities are always intercepted, polarizing Taiwanese People. Unfortunately, Taiwan is a chess piece expendable as US sees fit. We are not blind. If today, Taiwanese voted for peaceful engagement with China, those illicit forces will act string to deter, promoting fear and war mongering aided by its war machine media, interfering with election in Taiwan.
The Chinese have pissed off all the other countries in Asia - especially India. They've repeatedly attack the Indian border. Let them attack Taiwan. The minute the second largest military in the world knows that China's has a large number of its soldiers in the middle of the ocean, what do you think is going to happen? The Indians are going to sit in a corner rubbing themselves? No, they're going to invade China. The Indian Navy will send its navy into to the Indian ocean to halt all oil and gas, and food shipments going to China from the Middle East, and beyond. India doesn't care about the situation between Russia and NATO, but China getting carved up like a cake is non-negotiable. China also has an aging population, and the one-child policy means that there's a lot of men with no children coming from them (they don't have enough women to reproduce with to keep the population over one billion). The Chinese population going to be declining sharply. Whether they invade Taiwan (or assist in Ukraine - a long, long distance from China) or not, the fun times for the Chinese are yet to start.

The height of Qing dynasty included many current countries in central Asia like Kazakstan, as well as Mongolia, the outer Manchuria, which is now part of Russia. I have one question: what international law does the PRC break if they engage in war with Taiwan? I mean , the USA broke the principal of independence and sovereignty of UN members by invading Iraq and operating a regime change ; The Russian federation broke the first two principals and also the principal of territorial integrity by invading and annexing Ukraine ; But the People's republic of china , what principle would they violet? I really appreciate your video, which brings attention to this important topic. As an ex-Taiwanese special force operator, I will fight to my last breath to protect our democratic ways of life and my children. Please remember that we're not just some "remote island". If we fall, the first island chain breaks, and Taiwan strait becomes Chinese controlled. From the east coast of Taiwan, China will then be able to send its nuclear submarines to the Pacific without the US knowing it, and the whole west coast of the US will be under the fire range of their submarines. Japan and Korea may also have to bow to China because most of their energy supplies and trades go through the Taiwan strait. US influences will be significantly weakened, and most likely the US dollar will collapse as a result. If you think carefully, we are more like a gatekeeper of the free world.

My impression of the recent overwhelming show of force near Taiwan is that it was done with the intent of instilling a sense of despair -- to make Taiwan submitting to the PRC seem far less costly to the Taiwanese than engaging in military conflict with the PLA.
Whether they invade Taiwan (or assist in Ukraine - a long, long distance from China) or not, the fun times for the Chinese are yet to start.
you probably mean 'the relationships between the countries' politicians' - not the relationship between the countries' people. Cause they mostly never met each other.

9:40 is deeply incorrect. PRC is not intending to resume its territory to the height of Qing dynasty. The height of Qing dynasty included many current countries in central Asia like Kazakstan, as well as Mongolia, the outer Manchuria, which is now part of Russia. I have one question: what international law does the PRC break if they engage in war with Taiwan?
I mean , the USA broke the principal of independence and sovereignty of UN members by invading Iraq and operating a regime change ;
The Russian federation broke the first two principals and also the principal of territorial integrity by invading and annexing Ukraine ;
But the People's republic of china , what principle would they violet?
Taiwan is officially recognized by only a handful of country , they don't have a seat at the UN , and the vast majority of UN members recognize the PRC , lead by the communist government in Beijing as the "true china" and that Taiwan is only a part of its territory .

Of course it cares, but understand the influence of Taiwan current regime, anything related to China is a bad word, anybody who related himself with China is bullied at all level starting from kindergarten. the Chinese soldier who fought ww2 are constantly bullied because they still consider themselves as Chinese. My impression of the recent overwhelming show of force near Taiwan is that it was done with the intent of instilling a sense of despair -- to make Taiwan submitting to the PRC seem far less costly to the Taiwanese than engaging in military conflict with the PLA. The drill was conducted in that specific region for posturing reasons rather than training, or else it would have been done anywhere else on the Chinese coast. @@yuexue8283 China is powerful but the USA is more powerful and any war with China/Taiwan would almost certainly draw in Japan instantly as they know they are next (already have territorial disputes with China). Once Japan was in then the USA would be in. USA in would equal Australia in and so on. Who does China have as friends? North Korea is the only country with a mutual defence agreement with them. Who else would help China? Maybe only useless disaster states like Burma, Pakistan, Afghanistan.
please never relent you all deserve freedom self respect Australia loves Taiwan
Rather dead than red.
Imagine your kids got taken away from you and raised by your enemies and now you have found your kids and wants to take back custody but now your kids no longer recognize you as their parents
Are you referencing that to Taiwan?
So what are you advocating then? Handcuffing your kids to a pipe in the basement? That’s abuse, and thats exactly why Taiwanese don’t want to be part of China.
@@catc8927 people in China aren’t living in cages. A majority are compliant because it’s all about maintaining social order for a better future. Also, China don’t want USA to keep selling weapons to Taiwan as a military base because this will start a bloody devastating war. Wake the f up.
Freedom over false security.
Freedom over the illusion of safety.
Freedom over peoples feelings.
This is what I would choose.
Henry Kissinger: leaving war and chaos in his wake for a hundred years.
As always nicely done.
I have lived in Taiwan for 20+ years. While the vocal minority might be prepared to die for Democracy get lots of airtime in Western media I don't believe that it has much support from the average Taiwanese. They're a very pragmatic culture with 5,000 years of experience dealing with warlords. Peace, making money will be prioritised. War only happens if the Americans want it. THAT is the real issue for the Taiwanese. Just as it is for Zelensky.
You maybe right. US gov wants Xi to make mistakes in order to have excuses to nail down China's economy.
yes and as usual america wants war like they always want. China does not.
That was a great video!
I wish china would get sick of US meddling
Great reporting. One of the few journalist channels that still fact-check.
But have to wonder, why do so many of our modern messes seem to have Kissinger involved at one point or another. Smoothing relations to kick the can from back then to our current time.
Really dislike my politicians saying, "YOLO" when they're responsible for generations and generations of people proceeding them.
"Well, the Milky Way is on a crash course with the Andromeda galaxy in 43 sextillion years or so, may as well build a tenuous, combustible political stratagem on a dubious, unstable foundation!"
Yes , Kissinger - allready in 1964 my father was very interrested in that man - so little or much that the cia came on the door to my teenage sister (?) So l guess he is the psycopath wepon from usa to ustabil country after country : years after years after years after years after years

Peaceful reunification, Hong Kong sort of proved how hollow a dream that is. The Taiwanese people would lose.

@@hasaki_oce4611 eh ?.
This documentary clearly shows how much the US fears China's development over the past few decades, and it will only grow more fearful.
China has done a lot of growing in the last several decades. However, as a US citizen, I am much less fearful of China today than I was even 5-10 years ago. China was on a rocket ship upwards from the 90s to the mid 2000s. Now, though, China’s unfavorable demographic trends and overbearing government interventions are going to greatly reduce China’s ability to grow in the next decade.
The rest of the world sees it coming too; in 2023 China’s net foreign inflows to their stock market fell 77%. Most projections show that China’s growth rate is likely to slow to 3% by 2028 and fall below that of the U.S. from 2031 to 2035.
A good balanced piece of reporting!
All correct. Were I a pessimist, I would say that it was obvious that it'd develop this way since Kissinger.
A fantastic program, DW- Danke, from America ✌🏻
Great documentary DW! Keep them coming!. Great documentary DW! Keep them coming!.

I now have a deep urge to salami slice something.
Must be an Australian saying, because I don't know what that means.
Ummm.. salami slices…
"Divide and conquer" the old strategy all the european colonizers used to colonized others.....how britain colonized a big country like bharat (india)?
No wonder US and europe tried to divide the world, its easier to control them if they are small and divided
Yummy salami slices...
I swear to the higher power, after the third time I heard "salami slice," I sliced several sections of the Hebrew National beef salami that was in my fridge and ate them with relish.

Here’s a radical thought: let’s let the people of Taiwan choose their own destiny. It’s NOT up to China, America, the EU, it’s only up to the Taiwanese people.
China won’t let Taiwan do that - that’s the problem.
You are a very naive person, arent you?
Wonderful report, thank you journalist
From what i see the agreement was that we would stay out of the issue unless china attempted to take Taiwan by force if china tries to take Taiwan by force then it voids the agreement the United states had with china and are then clear to intervene in the conflict from the beginning that was the agreement that we would not get involved unless china tried to take Taiwan by force
Just as Washington is part of the United States, Taiwan is also an indivisible part of China. Even if Washington becomes an independent country from the United States, Taiwan will still be an indivisible part of China.
Pretty sure I was your 5 millionth sub 🎉
This is an incredibly well done coverage on the matter that captures perspectives from all sides. The only thing I'd want to see is what ordinary people from each country think about it and what is the general consensus.
The current government gets very low approval rate and they lost terribly in recent mayor or county governor election--only winning 5 out of 22. Most ordinary just want to live a good peace life and don't want the island to get involved in the war between the two superpowers. If the government can't be smart enough to avoid conflict, it will soon be replaced at the end of this year.
@@Roman-po8yc Taiwan is already an independent political system; it is recognized by or has diplomatic ties with more than ten countries in the world . Taiwan makes a lot more money from China than many other countries in the world. In other words, the two sides are closely related economically. A war between each other would bring about catastrophic results to the two areas. Many Taiwanese work or even invest in China. Some even married. We just don't want to be the chess played by the evil superpower struggle. Which is to blame or which is not worthy of trust or which is full of lies depends on which side you stand on. We just don't want to be a human sacrifice used to fight for the benefits of another country
Would you be angry if some countries created divisions in your home country? War is bad, it will always bring out the bad side of human nature. We have experienced a century of war and we know what war will bring. What we hope is that the Chinese can solve the problem by themselves instead of letting other countries interfere
@@nidieqiao from Taiwan's perspective it is already an independent nation with full autonomy there is no need for other countries to try to divide anything. In fact there is some hostile nation nearby threatening their lives with rockets and fighter jets everyday if Taiwan doesn't do what they want them to. That is something plenty to be angry about if you're empathetic with Taiwanese people. I think Chinese people who want unification should seek a friendlier method becasue this is obviously not working.
@@wendysing3030 the best way to avoid an armed conflict is to make sure the other side thinks twice about starting anything. Had Ukraine kept their nuclear bombs, Russia might not have invaded them. Samething with Taiwan. Unfortunately, The only way Taiwan can avoid a conflict is by strengthing it's military capabilities. Without a proper defense, Taiwan would be easily taken over by force and ordinary people would not have peace and enjoy their democracy and freedom.
If this happens amid russia ukraine war, then we can OFFICIALLY call it ww3
Former US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, at the Hudson Institute on Jun-24,2022: “Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan are the United States’ 3 strategic pinholes to contain our main competitors and maintain the US’s leader position in the 21st century.” I think we all know which competitors Mr Pompeo was referring to.
Unfortunately most western people prefer to believe the western narrative lies.
The world problem today is because of white supremacist mentality, thats the root of the problem. They think only the white are allowed to be on the top position.....
This mentality has been existed since colonial era 500 years ago
If that's what he said - word for word - then he did a terrible job by painting the US in a very bad light. Making it sound almost as clear as day that the US just sees Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan as merely vassals of the US whose relationship and purpose only serves to help maintain US dominance. So basically, keeping Taiwan "independent" was never even in their best interests; they just use that as a ruse to fool the public in order to keep Taiwan on their side.
Then why not US send troops to Ukraine?
