I actually liked the G7x Mk II quite a bit more shockingly. The audio was only off on the Sony because of wind reduction mode, but even quality wise I preferred the footage of the Canon. And the Sony's main advantage, shooting in 4K, is pretty much null and void with the camera's overheating issues. For $1k the Sony basically needs to have no compromises, but sadly that's not the case. Oh, and it's battery life is terrible too.
Yeah, The Cannons audio is a lot better than the Sony's inherently, but that clicking would ruin it for me... Also, the channel OffTheRanch has had a lot of issues with the Sony's focus over the past year, but then again, he fires .50 BMG near it on his other channels, so yeah... Might break it over time...
I was about to buy the RX 100 V until I saw how bad the audio is. I dont want to adjust the audio in post in every clip. The AF is amazing on the sony, but the image stabilization on the Canon G7x is much better.
G7X m2 is better to me too. Sony Rx100V has only 2 advantages; autofocus and high frame rate vid shooting. Although the autofocus is big +, the G7X m2 still does is decent job.
Yeah, the biggest take aways I see is: 1) Sony wins in the auto focus department 2) Canon has better color imo, Sony looks really flat and dead 3) Canon has better audio/mic. It sounds full and with depth. Sony sounds all twangy and unnatural. 4) Sony has a higher fps 5) Low light - each camera has certain low light conditions that excels than the other but its pretty dang close. I can't see how Sony is "clear" winner. It really is about what features are most important to each individual
sony's pictures are only flat in movie mode for better color grading. and sony's sound is probably weak because of his upgrade on the mic. videos from other users sounds better with the built in mic
Great comparison. I've already stepped back twice to get a RX100 just because the high price. My feellings after watching your test: Canon: sharper image, better sound (could not notice the auto-focus noise), cheaper, better colors and contrast. Slow auto-focus Sony: expensive, soft image, "thin" sound (kind of weird and not natural). Fast and accurate focus my 0.02
I think I like the Canon G7X II more because its cheaper, and I like the picture more (And you could always change that in post) those things make up for the bad auto focus.
*Anyone reading this the G7X does better in audio and and it also looks better, and the stabilization is even better than the Sony I don regret getting myself a G7X go canon and I’m sure you won’t either* 👌
The image stabilization on the Canon is superb. while the Sony zips into focus,it can't seem to stabilize very well. I believe the Canon has better stock color, but the Sony can be bumped up in post. The Sony seems to have that raw color palette. nice review, thanx Steele.
Wow, from the build up, I was expecting that I would want to shell out a thousand bucks for the Sony.......but after the side by side video, Canon ruled. Better colors, wider angle, way more stable shot, and waaaay better audio. Thanks or this review.
Audio = Canon Video stabilization = Canon Field of view = Canon Autofocus = Sony (barely. Definitely not $350-$400 better) More compact = Canon More versatile screen = Canon Color = Canon Is there anything Sony did that's better than the Canon besides barely have faster autofocus? For the money, you have to go Canon all the way.
Nice comparison. I keep wavering on the fence about getting a RX100v. It seems really good but maybe not quite the perfect solution for me. The Nikon DL18-50 seems like a competitive option as well, though very few people seem to use it and there's usually a reason for that...
LOVED this. The audio did sound better on the Canon, but it's crazy how much ambient noise you hear on the Canon, where on the Sony your voice was so much clearer. And I thought that while the movie mode made you and your colors a little "muted", It looked SO authentic. Particularly, when you showed the little "stream" of water. I thought it looked so much like what your eye would naturally see. Thanks for review!
Wow. I was all excited after your review for the Sony. Then watched the video and am crazy impressed with the canon. The audio smokes the Sony, same with color, and image stabilization. Bummed it doesn't have the high frame rate for slowmo but for me I wouldn't use that often. Thanks for helping me make up my mind.
+Sean Ozz dude the Sony fucking kills the canon lol. Sorry the video was before I figured out how to really use the Sony. The autofocus on the Sony and high frame rates make it superior. Butttt. The canon is framed better and an arms length and it's built better. Also the Sony Audio sounds thin in this video because I have the wind noise reduction turned on. With it off it sounds like the canon. But in the end the Sony is more expensive and the built quality is not as good as the canon. But that autofocus does it for me
Mr Steele you will have to make a new video then showing that. For myself and it seems many others. You could change the title to canon smokes Sony and this would be a great video to push the canon. I'd love to see you make a new one showing the audio side by side (no post editing) with it in a different setting. Maybe show some of the slowmo from the Sony too. As of now from your video only thing I'm seeing better is the auto focus. I do appreciate you making this and responding. From this video you're gonna save me some cash. Looking forward to an updated one.
+MrSteele Thank you so much for this video. I got my sony alpha 5100 stolen recent and I was looking for replacement, I love Sony, most of my cameras have been sony. the image quality is outstanding. after your video for Vlogging I prefer the framing and color quality of the Canon G7x Mark II, I am clumsy, i need a good hand grip. So happy to found your video. Thank you so much.
I bought a G7X Mii. I really do prefer the image quality of the RX100. Seems way more natural and clear to me. The biggest problem with the G7X is the auto focus being very slow. I didn't think it would bother me as much as it does but I do like the touch focus of the G7X. I have no regrets really. Awesome vid man.
Lachlan Peknice I doubt it worths the double price... its 600$ more... and yes i have the g7x markII and its awesome for the price point. Can't compare both because they aren't in the same price point, its very different.
I know you were trying to show that the Sony was superior in that side by side but honestly besides for the autofocus the G7X killed it in every way. Most importantly, to me at least, the image stabilization on the Canon was lightyears ahead of the Sony. I'd much sooner choose the more steady camera, with warmer colors and better audio than a much more expensive camera that has a couple of fancier features... But your talking review was good and very in depth so thank you
Need a small VLOG camera other than my 80D (too big) and Hero 5 (low light and audio sucks). I was looking for reasons not to get the G7X mark ii and this video pretty much sealed the deal on getting the canon. Haha. Thanks for the comparison.
canon wins for me too. I was looking at the sony but now rethinking on keeping my g7x. The only thing missing for me and thinking of switching was the slow frame rate. I wouldn't trade bad audio and having to color correct for frame rate.
And damn the Canon video looks waaaay better. Stable video vs shaky, rich color vs faded color, clear crisp audio vs audio that sounds like you have a bad cold.
Full HD is 1920x1080p.....which it does shoot. If you're referring to 4K or UHD then that is not called "Full HD" so saying it doesn't shoot full HD isn't true.....it definitely does shoot full HD at up to 60fps.
It seems you don't understand what word resolution does mean. You can make test and you will understand, what resolution is. Print some picture which contains text with different size. Shot it with good camera. Downscale picture to full HD. Make video of this picture on canon, extract picture from video. Compare pictures, find text which have such size, which you can just read, try to read same text from canon and watch is it readable.
I have to agree that i love how fast the focus is on the Sony BUT, the audio and colors on the Canon are so much nicer and would need less editing in post. Good video though.
One thing I noticed as well was the difference in auto exposure. Both cameras were adjusting exposure but the Sony was way more subtle about it and already correctly exposed while the Canon was still cranking the settings. Sony's auto exposure was something I could see myself using and I have a background in DSLR video, aka full manual shooting.
Nicely done! I think the only thing you might want to do is to desaturate your blue channel in the RX100 just a little. It will add a warmer tone and make your skin look healthier even on an overcast day like you were shooting. that Blue casting is especially visible when you look at the grout with your bricks and also the reflected sky of your brook/stream. Aloha, Brian
I just bought the canon g7x mark ii. I’m super new to vlogging, however I needed an upgrade for the sake of simplicity in uploading my videos from an iPhone to Windows 10. I bought it used in good condition and I did notice he sluggish autofocus already but, honestly it gets the job done and I only paid $450. I really liked this comparison. :) The Sony mark v is definitely my next goal camera now when I need to upgrade in the future. Thanks!
Well done review, my compliments!! (Efficient, well spoken, relevant information, good comparison between another competitor camera; the way a review should be)
The g7x mark II was breaking my budget as it was...got a payment program per month on Amazon. Very happy with it....I can edit anything out I don't like and its field of view is larger than the Sony. Thanks for the comparison video.
I've noticed the Canon makes vloggers faces red, but in this video the Sony actually makes your face blue. But you could fix either of these with a custom saved setting in post. The Sony has a really good autofocus but is no way near as good for audio and neither have external input. In this video the image stabilization seems noticeably better with the G7X too. The way the Sony is more zoomed in isn't as good but I guess you could fix that with longer reach equipment. I'm deciding on a new camera and think the G7X is the way forward, even the Mark 1 seems good enough. With the Sony you really have to start at the Mark 3 for the 180 screen or the Mark 4 for 4k, both of which are still more expensive in comparison to the cons. All of this is coming from a Sony DSLR user... I can't justify paying more for Sony.
Great video. You always manage to come up with very entertaining original content. Couple that with a great eye for cinematography and a real ability to break down the tech stuff makes your content some of the best on UA-cam. Inspiring stuff...please keep it coming Mr. Steele.
Awesome breakdown! I actually really like the image stabilization and lowlight capabilities of the G7X but was concerned about the mic. I knew I wanted to add "fluffies" but seeing your review with yours modded (I'll definitely mod mine when I buy one) really sold me on it. Thanks for taking the time to review and show a side by side comparison. :)
Good honest review. Glad you pointed out everything that you had to do to make it comfortable. Same for pointing out that it overheats during 4k recording, which is supposed to be the selling point, but if you can't use it for more than 5 mins whats the point. Thanks!
I mean, from the side by side footage I can see that the G7Xmk2 has better stabilised video, better sound, and better colours. And touch to focus. I do love the high framerate modes in the RX100mk5. Sigh, and I can't find either of these for sale here.
At 14:53 when you move the camera, the Canon doesn't focus on the new image and the Sony does, when you return it, the Canon seems to still have the focus on your face, but it never focused on the house when you moved it.
To all people saying the Sony looks better, you can easily reproduce that color gradient on canon footage as well. But the other way around is harder, because much data is lost already when the footage gets recorded with blue tint. Overall it is always the best option to record the highest dynamic range possible, and apply gradients afterwards manually.
Beard game getting strong! Lol The Sony's autofocus is truly off the charts, but I'm impressed with the Canon's image stabilization while you're walking around
I've been seeing several videos saying that the auto-focus is not good on the G7X series. Maybe I am now living in an alternative reality because one of the main reasons I bought that camera is because so many people were saying it had amazing auto-focus.
@@danhall5761 In what country people watch videos on phones? Watching on phones is perverse . "1080 is plenty" Yes 1080 is not bad, but this canon has NO 1080.
Its the auto focus amongst other things that switched me. I will start vlogging soon. warming up to it. I'll send you link once i'm started. Keep uploading more of your cool stuff, i'm subscribed and notifications switched on. on a side note, I would love to get into racing drones. Whats the chances of commissioning you to build me one of your epic racers with a moustache edition kit ;)
The stabilization and the colours look better on the canon as well as the sound, but the acutofocus is really better on sony. I would really like to buy the canon with the AF of the sony.
Your a great reviewer Gave you a sub and a Like I personally always loved Canon. Sony always has a darker pic or richer video. Even though Canon is way more pail I still prefer it.
The G7X did not even care to re-focus when you whipped from your face to your house to your face again, which may not be a bad thing, because I hate this crazy style of vlogging with spraying around with the camera. I think I actually like the G7X II more, it sort of behaves in a more dignified manner, while the Sony is just too quick to change the settings ;-)
Canon picture and audio look and sound better, but auto focus is just slow. Plus there’s no 4K! I was thinking of upgrading to one of this cameras for my car reviews but think I’ll stick to my iPhone 7 camera and just buy Momentum lenses...
Honestly I'm feeling the Canon much more after the field test. The Sony does have a faster auto focus, but other than that I feel the Canon did better.
I learning more towards the cannon. Image stabilization is much better on the canon! The same goes for color as well as the audio. True, Sony does focus a lot faster, but I think that’s some thing I can deal with. Thanks for the review and modification tips!
I have the G7X since 092016, and I have to be honest that the AF really is bad. I have a bunch of vlogging shots where the shot was blurred. Even when tapping or pushing the shutter button it would be really slow. I have to stop recording, manual focus with the shutterbutton and then start recording again. Big disadvantage in my opinion! Besides that, very good camera (colors, IS,...)
The Canon G7X II had better colour. The Sony was washed out and had purples. WAY better sound on the Canon too, and lastly image stabilisation was way better on the Canon...oh, and the Canon is a fraction of the price. You convinced me to go for the Canon....although you were pushing for the Sony.
It is a tough call, the Canon has better facial imaging, IMO. That would be a significant factor depending on your vlogging style. I'm thinking of experimenting with a little video work, not quite ready to drop a grand on a camera, but could see it soon enough. Good job on the compare!
If you do not need any zoom, a Fuji X70 is a great vlogging camera, you can use a mic if you like, it has a flip screen but most importantly it has a much larger sensor - it's around £499, cheaper than both of these models.
This is so hard to choose! I personally liked the lighting/color contrast on the canon and would choose the canon but that auto focus is on point with the sony! I bought a RX 100 III back when it first came out and still use it but I'm having issues with the auto focus. I guess the V has improved since then!
Love the canon picture quality. No comparison for me. However, the Sony has a better focus ability and sound but for me the picture quality is most important.
Sony focuses faster because it doesn't have "touch to focus" so it has to focus on whatever it's pointing at. The canon relies more on the user to touch the screen and tell it where you want it to focus. That's why when he did the face focus test, the canon didn't focus at all when he pointed it away from his face
When you put the first two cameras together I immediately thought the camera on the left looked better and I was expecting it to be the Sony camera. Think I'm gonna go for the Canon :) Thanks for the video!
Sorry but After watching your side by side by side review the G7X won in my book! I liked the colors way much better, touch screen, def the sound, video stability, the wide lens, the focus and most importantly the price!
I think the Sony looks clearer, but like a lot of people below have said, the canon seems to be the winner in terms of sound quality & image stabilization, which for me would be the better option for Vlogging without a gimbal or external mic. Sony excels in image quality and focusing speeds for sure though...
My good God! ... in spite of all the hype and praise on Sony's quick autofocus ... the Canon G7X jumped out immediately as having better picture and color quality as soon as you put them side by side during your testing.
Autofocus on the Canon G7X II is a nightmare, especially if you don't film outdoors at daylight. I film in my studio with fairly well lightning, me approx. 2 meter in front of the camera, and autofocus goes crazy all the time back and forth, sometimes completely blurs out (making everything unrecognizable) after 5-10 minutes of continuous recording. Nowadays I don't use autofocus, but always use manual focus. And of course always record audio separately, because the build in mic on the Canon G7X II is just S O B A D.
Oh, and it's battery life is terrible too.
this video makes me want to buy the canon instead of sony
Belin Tilija once you start recording video that autofocus clicking noise will drive you crazy
I honestly have never heard the clicking for the autofocus in any videos. Which is odd, so that tells me it's not THAT bad.
YOU GOD DAMN RIGHT
The crisp colors of the canon is what made me buy it for my vlogs. I love it and actually never noticed the clicking much.
I was about to buy the RX 100 V until I saw how bad the audio is. I dont want to adjust the audio in post in every clip. The AF is amazing on the sony, but the image stabilization on the Canon G7x is much better.
Mitchel Rieger you *saw* how bad the *audio* was
P
The colours on the G7X look a lot better in the side-by-side
true
So true
Nah, sony looks more natural...Also u can change how the color looks on the sony.....
But canon has too low resolution.
Also the g7x looks oversaturated when in decent lighting....
From the review I actually really want a g7x now lol
G7X m2 is better to me too. Sony Rx100V has only 2 advantages; autofocus and high frame rate vid shooting. Although the autofocus is big +, the G7X m2 still does is decent job.
The Canon is better.
I won't spend 300-400 extra for that Sony!
I'd spend the difference on extra battery and accessories for the Canon.
Yeah, the biggest take aways I see is:

the sony has an aweful blue tint to it.
that could be fixed in post... he may not have picked the best white balance.
no its typical of sony cameras they have terrible auto white balance.
That's typically not true.
What most people want of a compact quality camera is to not be annoyed with anything regarding post.
That's the color of the shade he's in. The camera should have balanced that out.
I think I like the Canon G7X II more because its cheaper, and I like the picture more (And you could always change that in post) those things make up for the bad auto focus.

All of this is coming from a Sony DSLR user... I can't justify paying more for Sony.
Same want to buy the cannon now. The image stabilization was amazing.
G7X it is.... thanks for the comparison. Helped a lot!
Good honest review. Glad you pointed out everything that you had to do to make it comfortable. Same for pointing out that it overheats during 4k recording, which is supposed to be the selling point, but if you can't use it for more than 5 mins whats the point. Thanks!
I like how you put skateboard grip tape on the record button. Definitely something I will be doing.
I agree with you. I ended up getting a Sony RX100 V and use it almost exclusively now on my stuff. Amazing camera! :-)
Very nice! I'm deciding which one to buy and you helped a lot! tks
Beard game getting strong! Lol
The Sony's autofocus is truly off the charts, but I'm impressed with the Canon's image stabilization while you're walking around
Thanks for this video man, i was gonna plump for the G7X II and now I definitely am. Thanks man :)
Seems like everything but the focus is better on the G7x. Thanks for the comparison.
I've been seeing several videos saying that the auto-focus is not good on the G7X series. Maybe I am now living in an alternative reality because one of the main reasons I bought that camera is because so many people were saying it had amazing auto-focus.
The sony colors on that look like something from a horror movie when it comes to skintones lol
Really useful stuff, thanks for taking the time, hope you get better soon.
thanks for the review! I've been vlogging with my phone and it's time to upgrade to an actual camera. i liked the side by side comparison. thanks😊
G7Xii has Picture Styles, you can set up custom sharpness, contrast, saturation. Use open cell foam for your wind muff. Sony is more fragile IMO.
Image stabilization looks much better on the canon
This is the comparison I was searching for!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!
Thanks for this video. This video convinced me that the canon is way better :D
Awesome job as always, hope you feel better man.
the gear links in the descriptions are awesome man! just noticed them.
The Canon by far is better
Саnon has too low resolution, which is significantly lower, than Full HD. Now in year 2018 camera must have at least Full HD resolution.
@@sitinij for what purpose? Most people watch videos on phones. 1080 is plenty
@@danhall5761 In what country people watch videos on phones? Watching on phones is perverse
.
"1080 is plenty"
Yes 1080 is not bad, but this canon has NO 1080.
@@sitinij it shoots 1080p, I run one as my secondary camera.
@@danhall5761 No, it's real resolution is not full HD. Read reviews of canons on dpreview.
Thanks man, very helpful. Canon Dubai was out of stock for the Gx7 but now iv watched your video I will get the Sony
+Karl eVlogs hahah. You need it ! My video makes the canon look and sound sooo much better. But believe me. The Sony fucking is worth it
Its the auto focus amongst other things that switched me.
"The best camera is the one you have with you" is the quote I believe.
anyway keep up the great work love the videos
I like how you waited a second to show the names of the camera for the vid test. My preference locked in on the left with me thinking it was Sony...
The stabilization and the colours look better on the canon as well as the sound, but the acutofocus is really better on sony. I would really like to buy the canon with the AF of the sony.
Thanks for the comparisons 👍🏼
hello Steele you are my idol thanks for inspiring me to get into this hobby
Your a great reviewer
Gave you a sub and a Like
I personally always loved Canon.
Also, love the effort put into the description :)
Canon performed better.
Rad video. Thanks for doing the side by side stuff.
Thank you for helping me to make up my mind about buying Canon G7X II
I think besides the focus, I prefer Canon especially the colour of the video. I'm getting me one hehe
It is a tough call, the Canon has better facial imaging, IMO. That would be a significant factor depending on your vlogging style.
I'm thinking of experimenting with a little video work, not quite ready to drop a grand on a camera, but could see it soon enough.
Good job on the compare!
Great video! Gave a really good idea on both the positive and negative aspects of the camera
Thank you mr Steele! Great review!
The focus transition on the canon looks much smoother and nice
In the market for a new Camera, we're still using the GoPro :D Fantastic information
When you put the first two cameras together I immediately thought the camera on the left looked better and I was expecting it to be the Sony camera. Think I'm gonna go for the Canon :) Thanks for the video!
Plus the audio is better in the Canon IMO. Which is important seeing as there is no option to put a mic in.
same thought!
Sorry but After watching your side by side by side review the G7X won in my book! I liked the colors way much better, touch screen, def the sound, video stability, the wide lens, the focus and most importantly the price!
The Sony has a cold blue color temperature tint to it.
I do like to slow motion capabilities of the Sony though.
I think the Sony looks clearer, but like a lot of people below have said, the canon seems to be the winner in terms of sound quality & image stabilization, which for me would be the better option for Vlogging without a gimbal or external mic. Sony excels in image quality and focusing speeds for sure though...
I am actually thinking about getting one of these
not sure what mistake you made with the sound, but the Sony does not sound like that... in fact the sony sounds great in every other review.
SONY FAN TRIGGERED
Great review, I believe I will go with the G7X, get well soon.
