Ive probably watched over 50 videos on these two cameras, and yours by far is one of the best! You covered so many things that most people don’t mention
lauren gheorghe I agree! Thank you!!! Looking for a good travel camera and I was into the sony but after you described everything and seen the difference, I am going for the cannon!
Glad I bought the G7x. Better skin tones, faster start up, better stabilization, menu system, cheaper... You can't use the Sony's higher frame rates because of the menu system and 4k makes it over-heat. I have a vlog channel (not this one) which is why I needed the G7x. When I upload, I upres to 4k. It's not as good as 4k but it looks better than 1080p. This is how you upres. When you create a new event, you select 4k. That's it. I've also been using LUTS so my footage looks better now than in old videos. This is my vlog channel, if your interested. Sethwelling72
Have you tried the Steady Shot Intelligent Active setting for image stabilization? Also, you can program any of the buttons to handle the frame rate settings so there's no need to search for it in the menu. You can also save the settings in memory so you just need to use the Memory Recall function to switch between settings. I use it when switching between video, photo and hfr settings.
+NCFuncion Oooooooh all of that stuff sound like absolute game changers to me! I actually had no idea you can do that so I'm gonna look that stuff up and try it out! Thank you so much!
If you are familiar with Sony and how to use the function menu - extremely easy to navigate key features. Also, not sure what happened to your camera, but usually take 2-13 seconds max to start up. Auto focus, slo motion and picture profile options from the Sony put it on top in my opinion.
ahh I'm so stuckk. I almost bought the g7x until you said no slow motion. My heart broke haha. Those two cameras totally just need to have a baby already.
Slow motion is not an effect of the camera. Don't listen to this person. Some cameras have a "slow mo" option but any camera that records in 60fps or higher is capable of creating slow motion videos. You'll be uploading the video to your PC anyway, all you have to do is drop it to 24fps in post.
I understand what you are saying. By no "slow motion" I meant to say it does not have 120 or 240 fps capabilities, which will allow me to create a slow motion effect on my videos. 60fps is okay, but not as cinematic as I wanted.
I agree! I want the g7x ii so bad but is 60 fps good enough? I don't know since this is my first time entering the world of photography let alone video making. I can't decide on one camera 😩
IMHO you made a clear case for the Canon. 60fps in the Canon is sufficient speed for most people and the overall color tone and ease of use are far superior. The “super” slo-mo is something people rarely use but the other things are important every time. Add lower cost to the the equation and the Canon should be the “no brainer” choice for most people.
Hannah really helpful and you explained it so well. One major point was however not touched upon and that is RECORDING VOICE QUALITY. I almost bought Canon g7x but then i noticed we cannot attach an external mike to it. I make food vlogs and background noise like traffic and crowd is a big concern for me while recording. So can you please let me know how good is Canon in such situations? I mean will i get a good voice quality ? Will it filter out background noise?
Hello, thanks for this video. I just want to know if we only need a dslr or we can start with a good quality point and shoot camera also? Actually I am explaining those points what I am looking for. Hope you help me to short me my perfect camera: 1) I need it mostly for video shoot than photography. 2) I need a camera which will take great quality video in night, under low light, say street videos. 3) I need it to take photographs of very first moving objects. Like my little child playing with smile. I just want to capture that smile, which I am not able to take with my mobile camera. As they dont have burst mode I think. Not very sure. What I need to say, those kind of camera which has very fast shutter speed, which can freeze any fast moving object. 4) I need to have a good image and video stabilization, even if I am in running mode and shooting. 5) I need a good zoom like minimum of 30x. That's it. Please try to help me to figure me out my best camera. I don't have any pricing budget though as I am not sure which will fill those all points in every aspect. But of course will look for minimum budget. Thanks in advance.
Give the Panasonic LX10 a try. It's worth it. I tested all three. Sony was too expensive for the purpose. Canons audio was a bit worse and no 4k. I kept the Panasonic. Tons of features, nice lens, very user friendly menu.
Hi Hannah!! While you're in Australia... Make a video of yourself.. Like record videos of throwbacks. Your school, your hangouts etc.. Just a suggestion. 😄
thank you honey for this comparison ... before I by my Canon g7x I was thinking about the Sony. I'm so happy with my Canon ... by and congratulations you are great
Super review, thank you! The white balance transition and warm-ish(G7X) vs. cool-ish(RX100) mentions were very helpful. BTW checked your kit.com and didn't see this: which Lavalier mic are you rocking? Pretty sure I'm eventually snagging a G7X Mark II and, since there's no external mic option on the Canon, I'd like to record audio separately and sync in post.. curious what folks are using!
We literally just had almost the same thing happen to our G7X, although it fell off a ledge while in London, now we're tossing up whether to buy another G7X or grab the RX100.
Your comment about not doing 4K because of your computer needs addressing. It is normal to edit 4K as proxies. That is, in making proxies Premiere or other programs make 1080p copies of the 4K footage and then you do your edits on the proxies so if your computer can handle 1080, it can handle 4K proxies. It is only at the export stage that the software references the 4K files and applies the edits to those exporting files. Generally a pro workflow is we shoot 4K, edit proxies, then export as 1080p. So why shoot 4K if we edit and export in 1080? Because the 4K files have a lot more detail and at 1080 the files look better than files shot natively at 1080. It makes footage from less expensive cameras look like they came out of much better equipment. Also because of the extra resolution you can crop the footage down to a quarter size without looking degraded. Transformations like rotation look better than they do on native 1080p files Plenty of UA-cam videos and web sites that talk you through making proxies. Once it is done once you will be surprised at how easy it is and how you can edit very high resolution footage on very humble computers.
7 minutes into the video and I see no reason why anyone would buy this Sony... why would you buy it except the slow mo .... or be like Sarah... Well you seem to have a nice and different approach... love your video 😊... 👍
Autofocus is much better. Slow mo. Slog. Better video features than stabilization and color. Doesnt matter how good your stabilization is when the video is out of focus
@@ProdByClockwerk Thanks. I just checked them out, but they seem too rigid and uncomfortable for my taste. I wanted something soft and comfortable on my shoulder. So I went with the Peak Design Slide. :-) . For smaller cameras like the RX100 you need to get the old Version 3 anchor tags(These are thin enough to fit through the RX100 lug eye). If you are stuck with the latest Version 4 anchor tags which are thicker, use them with 6mm split rings. (www.amazon.com/Nickel-Plated-Split-Chain-Findings/dp/B000RB77N0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1379984353&sr=8-1&keywords=6mm+split+rings) . BTW anchor tags come along with the peak design straps.
I like the canon on everything except autofocus. I'm more into photography than videos & I need camera for traveling, hikes, landscapes, quick street photography and sometimes family vlogging. Should I care so much on the autofocus? :\
Hi Hannah, thanks for this video. Was so weird seeing you sitting still without the amazing scenery but like you said, it's good to do a tech video for us tech junkies now and again lol. I still have my canon g7x mkii and I'm happy with it for now but it's good to see a true review on them both so thanks. So I guess the big question is, if Sony and canon combined together, what would the brand name be, sanon? Pahahah sounds like a bathroom asessorie:) I would totally but it too. Wish canon would add 4k and slowmo! Also lens for the canon g7x is f2.8 whereas Sony's is f1.8. Sony is better in low light if that makes a difference for some.
I love slow mo but don't like anything else about the Sony besides quick focusing. If I got the G7x couldn't I just slow it down even more in post? What's the big deal about it only going 50 fps? Does it affect the quality THAT much if I just wanted to slow it down even more in editing?
If you slow 50fps footage down more than 50%, then it will start to go jerky and it looks awful haha. The higher the frame rate, the slower you can make the footage with it still looks smooth
oh man...thought you might be still around in sg...would love to meet up with you for coffee or a meal...let me know when you are back in sg again ya...thanks!!!!

Thanks for covering the practical, everyday annoyances/benefits of using both the cameras!
Only after using Sony, people comes to realize how reliable and trustable Canon is.
Thank you so much for this video Hannah. Such a babe! You've inspired me to get back into vlogging. I'm going with Canon!
TLDR version : I should have bought another Canon G7X mk 2 instead of wasting my money on the Sony...
Burzin Billimoria worth it for the stabilisation alone, I have the g7xmk2

Looks like I’m going with a Canon based on the things you’ve described. Slo-mo is not enough to sell me past the cons.
Hello! How long can you film with the Sony in 1080? Is the battery life an issue over the Canon? Thank you!

What setting on Sony RX100 do you use? Love your reviews (although I already have both cameras :) just sub!

no. using IPhone 5S. i wish i have more money to buy newer one lol.
Great video, thanks for the advice. Just subbed

What about the Panasonic LX10 - the most under rated vlogging camera around cheaper than the Sony - faster lens than the canon and does 4K
The G7X M3 is coming out and it looks pretty awesome!

How about the battery life comparison
Lost Leblanc prefers the canon over the Sony and he’s highly successful at video editing
Which tripod is this ?
You should be able to change frame rate and video quality from the Fn menu - but not unfortunately. Also if you like filming in shutter priority (to follow 180deg rule) then you need to constantly make sure the shutter speed hasnt changed when you get the camera back out of your bag again. Thanks for the vid -. Interesting insights
whats the shutter speed got to do with the 180 rule ?????
stokehaunted - shutter speed = 2 X frame rate (see this: By far the most common setting for cinema has been a shutter angle near 180 degrees, which equates to a shutter speed near 1/48 of a second at 24 fps. Any larger, and motion appears more smeared since the end of blur in one frame extends closer to the start of blur in the next frame.)
what's ur editing machine?
That was really handy thanks alot
With the price difference, like 50% more money it is hard to say they are in the same class.
Which performs better in low light!?
DomDetex cannon g7x
The g7xii is a very good budget compact camera. The Sony rx100v is the best compact camera for people w higher budget
+tuvietnamm Yes I agree :)
I have the g7xii and thinking of adding the new Gopro Hero 6 for slomo.
then which one is better????
you are incredibly pretty without make up, heaven sent.
can any tell me please, what are best telephoto lenses available for Canon G7x mark ii .??
Sorry it's a point a shoot so you can't change the lenses.
CurrentlyHannah means, i should go for Sony alpha series then.? i mean whoch you will recommend out of a 6100, canon m3, canon m100.??
really helpful, thank you!
very helpful review.
If you had the choice to purchase only one or the other with the knowledge you now have, which one would you choose?
Canon
Currently Hannah mayb coz u r so used to it.....??
Awesome review...!
Thanks, great, as a mountaineer, I have to use gloves and battery life is key, useful, thanks.
Some one must put the two cameras together and make a CANONY. Haaa I will keep my DSLR for now.
All the cons you mentioned can be fixed in settings
Ok, so I was watching this and I noticed the "thumbs up" was at 666. So, I had to give it thumbs up to move it off that #, lol. Would have given it a TU anyway. So...there ya go!
If these two cameras had a baby, then it would be the best camera....
yeah that RX stabilisation isnt good enough for the price point that it sits at...

you really have a nice camera... i wish i can have those kinds of camera too.... i love vlogging but i guess no one wants to watch my video.. hahhaha
