- Welcome back to Next-Gen Console Watch. This week Daemon is joined by the usual crew of Ryan McCaffrey from Podcast Unlocked, and Max Scoville from Beyond, IGN's PlayStation podcast. The topic: if the rumors are true, Sony and Microsoft have very different strategies for how to handle the mid-gen phase of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. One is likely to do a 'pro' upgrade, and the other is looking into the handheld market. How did the two sides get to where they are, and will those strategies work?

@@504Trey Xbox definately is lacking the absolute most of all the platforms to play on. The exclusives are being shared to other platforms so whatever they do have you can play it on PC or something. To make things worse the xbox exclusvies have all been complete garbage. Starfield, Redfall and Halo were suppose to be the biggest games of all time for them and look how those turned out. Then the new fable game has memes made of it for people to laugh at. Xbox has been the laughing stock of this gen. Then you want a handheld to play nothing that not already on PC. Dude just get a steam deck. You can play everything xbox has and more. Or just get yourself a gaming PC and play on steam and get emulators for nintendo games. The best setup for gaming you want is of course a PC and a PS5 and/or nintendo switch depending what you enjoy. But to drop Playstation for an xbox handheld...that makes no sense.

Seems to me there has been more hardware and systems released in past 10 years than there has been games.
We don't need a series x pro. We don't need a pS5 pro either. We need developers to start using the features and power that's available now. If they would then we wouldn't need a pS5 pro or series x pro

Ps5 has made literally one next gen game that’s it. One, and that came out basically at launch with ratchet and clank. 4 years later they still haven’t matched the tech in that game lol the whole marketing around these consoles was a scam back then, and it’s just as much a scam now.

Some games are clearly pushing the limits of this current gen... Cannot run at 60fps, Ray tracing is very limited, lower quality texture shadows, in comparison to average modern PCs...

Sony's big first party games always start dropping more consecutively the last 3-4 years of the system. That period literally starts in 2025. At GameStop it’s so apparent that new Hardware from Sony or Microsoft doesn’t feel necessary unless more new games start coming out for them. The PlayStation Portal is a cool device, but is essentially the WiiU gamepad for your ps5, and Xbox seems apathetic as to whether their hardware sells, just so long as they can get people to join GamePass.
Portal is not for everybody
they are playing the long game with Gamepass, which will inevitably become one of the primary ways the majority of modern gamers will want to get access to and play games. It's already happend with music, and then movies, it's going to happen with games eventually.

What we need is consoles with faster CPU’s and ram that can render larger more in depth worlds more NPC depth etc
What we need is developers making better use of the 'nextgen' consoles under our TV's.
A big change of CPU may cause unpredictable effects on backward compatibility, that's why they'd rather only upgrade the GPU.

The Touryst, by programming wizard Shin'en, has an 8k mode on PS5. But in true Shin'en fashion, it wouldn't be impressive without an exclamation point. So, we're talking about NATIVE 8K AT 60 FPS❗
Interestingly, they weren't able to run it at 8K on XBSX, due to filtrate constraints. Filtrate happens to be one of PS5's advantages over XBSX, which still manages an impressive 6K internal render.
It's still kinda scummy marketing, but it's technically valid.

Another point that needs bringing up - will a portable console of either mean the handheld will get any exclusives? Assuming it’s lower powered than the main series consoles

The REGULAR Playstation 5 was expected to already be a "Pro" gaming hardware. Likewise, the Xbox Series X. I remember the Aw and amaze of seeing the very first Hellblade 2 teaser. We remember the Aw and amaze when Sony bragged about being able to load a city landscape in under 2 seconds!
Microsoft and Gamepass are going the indie route so a handheld does make a lot of sense for them, while Sony - for now - is still big on cinematic experiences that can benefit from a more powerful console
Too bad performance is near identical. Maybe Sony could take a hint and shift their focus. We REALLY don’t need a midgen update console from either Xbox or PlayStation.

@@MrBeefTot187 It has a 45% GPU upgrade and an AI upscaler like a DLSS that is already better than FSR. the 60 FPS modes he is talking about are already present in plenty of games but at a huge sacrifice to image quality and that is what the GPU bump and PSSR is for. It will 100% make the games run at a much better resolution at those 60 FPS mode games. There are probably 5 games out of the thousands who are not 60 FPS, this idea that the CPU cannot push 60 fps in modern games is not true because we already got modern games and they ran at 60.

@@longtutjenkins you say that it's better than FSR but the only thing you mean is specifically the FSR version for consoles which is FSR 2 and not really the newest FSR version which is FSR 3 and soon 3.1 which will significantly improve and will apparently also soon go the AI upscaling route that they are working on and on top of that FSR 3 has Frame Generation capabilities which PSSR apparently not has which could have made 120fps possible if FSR 3 was available for consoles.

The PS5 pro is redundant at this point. Even devs who've spent time with the PS5 pro dev kit have stated who is this for? They specifically said, "the PS5 pro makes no sense, we still haven't been able to fully utilize the power of the base PS5." The pro console won't be able to make games run at 60fps any better than the base console because it's using the same CPU with a slight clock boost. The GPU is where they're going to put all the upgraded power as they're going for "the best ray tracing performance" but in actuality we won't be able to see much a difference between each console. I'm EXTREMELY disappointed in Sony for taking this route, they would've been way better off making a modern PlayStation Portable that uses the AMD Z1 extreme (or a custom version) so we can take our PS5 games on the go with no limitations. In fact from devs I've spoken to they could get most PlayStation 5 games to run so long as the portable console uses a comparable SSD & devs patch the games which would be a much better sell than a $599 PS5 pro that barely dies better than the base model. I'll enjoy my PS5 and will NOT purchase the pro model as it's just a shameful cash grab imo.

Console generations need to be much longer, to coincide with longer development cycles. 10-15 years could allow devs to get familiar with the hardware.

An Xbox handheld with Xbox OS that could play pc ports of games with ability to plug into an egpu would be holy grail. That or just improve the windows handheld experience so Rog ally like devices are enjoyable.
We're also not considering the fact that we're reached the limits of scale and fidelity that a typical dev studio can reach in a reasonable dev cycle. At this point I'm happy with a handheld Xbox (or any affordable hardware) that could run Uncharted 4 at decent settings at a smooth 30, 40 or 60fps.
We had an Xbox portable before, it was called windows phone 7, you could get real deal achievement points in the games 😮😮

Literally no point in a ps5 power upgrade. As for a portable xbox, an ROG Ally or lenovo legion go should do the trick. Nintendo is the only one that needs a power bump and I'm still buying games for my switch even with the hindered graphics.

Ps5 pro does have a purpose. The purpose is gta 6. Ps5 pro is the only way to play gta 6 with the highest graphics or frames setting considering the gta 6 will not release on pc for a few years.
I’ve said it multiple times but Microsoft doesn’t need to make a portable handheld. They need to make an OS built around Xbox that will run on them. ROG Ally, Legion Go, MSI claw, the hardware doesn’t let them down. Windows lets them down
Only brainless person can say this...PS5 was weak console on release. Look it now, all console gaming is big compromise between 4K - RTX - 60 FPS. You can't get all in one package.
Hellblade 2 is truly a next generation game
Playstation need an iconic character for their system like mario for nintendo. Maybe Nintendo survived so long because of characters like mario and zelda. Nostalgia for older gamers but still fun games for younger gamers. Old iconic characters in a new game. Oh, and hydbrid handheld console is nice too.
Yeah, PlayStation doesn’t really have a strong legacy brand figure. Even Xbox has Halo, even if it had been handled somewhat poorly with many aspects of infinite, it has a strong halo vibe.

Universal Studios tried to sell Crash Bandicoot to Sony as a PlayStation mascot, however Sony PS declined the offer because they rather promote creativity with new characters
There is really no need for a PS5 pro currently... perhaps if the PSVR2 picked up as expected, it would have been a great upgrade, but the quest 3 just took over mostly

Xbox has two UA-cam post of games coming to a Xbox Series One. I'm thinking a Hybrid console of a handheld and Xbox One. I've been writing about the One would have been huge if it was made like a 360 offering offline support and to integrate universal phone support to the One. That wireless System Links, wrote early into the Series life cycle could they boost wireless System Links to get a Block party console that would be huge for city buyers like Japan.

Sony's gunshy from the Vita just not hitting the sweet spot but how they handled storage and platform openness due to what happened with the PSP's piracy was an over correction that didn't help with adaption. Also the price of making Vita games started to break into console tier w/o the player base to support it.
Xbox just needs a win and sees what the Switch and Steam Deck are doing and wants in on that action before Sony realizes what an easy win they'd have on their hands.
My confusion is while the Pro move feels really niche and excessive in this generation there are quite a few games that feel inadequately optimized and need a pro variant to cover for their subpar launch states. Star Wars Jedi Survivor & Dragon's Dogma 2 are two that come to mind. However, even on PC both games have issues so I'm not sure a Pro Variant would cover over the limitations and lack of polish the games showed at launch.

If Microsoft made Windows work more seamlessly on a handheld device I’d be interested. If they are making a custom Xbox OS for a handheld that is only a gaming device, then I’ll keep my Steam Deck.

The ok GPU upgrade and disappointingly tiny CPU upgrade of the PS5 Pro makes it the PS5 Pro console you can get away with when your competition declares that it isn’t making a mid-gen upgrade console at all.
An Xbox handheld that can play current gen Xbox games w/ Game Pass would make me buy an Xbox branded device for the first time ever.
Ray tracing really is to help developers reduce the texture loading overhead of their games, so it’s really not a “sexy” feature at this point in time.

If Sony goes PS5 Pro you’re going to train us to avoid the first model of PS6 and just wait to get 6 slim or pro.
The only thing PS5 needs is optimization, some games might reach 60 fps, but its never locked in, but drops consistently.
I'll stick with my ps5 og de. It does its job and keeps me playing games.
