Hey Michael! I can remember seeing Billy Joel as opening act for Martin Mull the comedian and song writer when Martin Mull put out songs on albums. It was in Philly. The next time I saw him was in Denver at a sold-out arena. Now a days not sure what I saw in his music, I've grown in my taste.
Outstanding content Michael. Really thought provoking video, especially the segment about residency. All of your points come back to the business of the music.... corporate greed. Money, and more money.
To be fair, the Billy Joel residency at MSG is about 1 show per month so not a true residency a la Britney Spears/Celine Dion. He still has been touring so his fans have had many opportunities to see him at other venues closer to where they live over the last 10 years since the MSG residency started.
You are wrong. Joel has done several; shows in a row far exceeding one day a month. Please take these posts seriously and know what you are talking about. Thank you.
@@tod3msn in 10 years, he has done 150 shows averaging 15 a year. Yes, that is more than 1 a month, but it is not now and has never been an exclusive engagement

That's how I feel when I go on UA-cam and see a new video by Michael. It's gonna be a good 10-12 minutes, I'm generally going to be on the same boat, not always, but most of the time. I walk away happy. Another good analysis!!!! And KUDOS to Steve Miller.. F***k the R&RHofF.
Billy Joel. Quick story, he had the same backing band from the mid 70's till 1989. He fired everyone but his drummer in 1989. Problem was he forgot to tell them. He did an interview on MTV where he announced a new tour with a new band, and that was how the band who backed him for almost 15 years found out they were out of a job. The guitar player ended up committing suicide. It's all documented in the movie "Hired Guns". After that I could never listen to him again.
I wouldn't pay $350.00 to see God, or even a resurrected Beatles reunion. Tickets were $8.00 in my day and I saw some pretty astonishing stage acts, Jethro Tull, Yes with the epic Roger Dean stages, Mountain, The Who, Rush, etc. Far better to sit at home and watch a great concert on DVD than to have some idiot stand up in front of you with a cell phone raised high, and people constantly going to get beers, then putting your ears out with those excruciating teeth whistles, louder than the band, sometimes people throwing up on your shoes. A live concert is not even worth the $8.00 I used to pay anymore. I'm into music, not parties.
Now that’s what I’m talking about I’m looking in to bands that charge less! I want to do a KUDOS video for the worthy artists as well! Your comment and a couple of others have inspired me!❤❤❤
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine I’m going to see Nugent in July tickets are from $29.50 to $149.50 plus the usual bs fees. At a venue really without a bad seat. And he has a new album.
i just came across an interview 2005 creativeworkx with bruce dickinson and jannick gers of iron maiden. about being inducted into some hall of fame. bruce, asked said it was meaningless to him but great for the fans and those are the people who count.jannick said if you live your life just wanting to be in a hall of fame you're being a bit silly. it was for the fans. and good for steve miller for speaking out about this.
You know, I agree with you 100% on Dolly Parton. WHAT?? She is a total country artist, nothing more. She has no business, whatsoever, in a "Rock" hall of fame. Steve Miller is "the Man". Quite frankly, what they did stinks to high-heaven. He is truly a team player: "What about my band?... " Billy Joel's The Nylon Curtain's "Pressure" is my favorite song of all times. I wouldn't consider him a "zero" because of his "residency". He is getting up there in years (as are so many of the classic-rock artists); isn't he in his 70s now? Personally, I would rather that the extra into consideration and travel to see them. In his prime, he was constantly on tour, and I think paid his dues. For the younger artists... they better do some touring.😊
Well said Agent! I’m a total fan of Billy as you are, and I understand his age getting in the way, but when he does a residency, the Elton fires a residency, who tells U2 to take up residency, and they told 2 friends, and so on, and so on… It’s the hurt to the industry that I mind! ❤❤❤
Oh yes she does. Um Rock comes from Country and Blues. Stop talking about a musical genre you know nothing about. And it was created in the South, and she is from the South.
Yeah the music genre you think you have ownership over, was created by uh diverse group of people in the South. Not the North or Great Britain. We set the trends.
Huh? You call $350 (or £300 UK) reasonable? Well I don't! I can't even afford a third of that. Next month, a few days after my birthday, KISS is playing here in Manchester, UK, but the tickets are WAY out of my price bracket - they cost the same as my entire weekly income and when you are not in employment it is impossible. I had been waiting for this band to come to Manchester and when it does, I am priced out. Been a fan since '78. (And yes, I know the band (especially Paul Stanley) lip-synchs - it is becoming very obvious.)
I go to see tribute groups these days because of high ticket prices. The tribute groups come closer to me many times than the real bands. The so-called real bands are really tribute bands.
You forgot to mention that Billy Joel is doing tours while doing his residency. You also failed to mention that he is 75 years old (not lazy) and doesn’t need to promote anything, even though he has a new song. He also has a young band he’s helping to advance their careers, that alone is respectful for helping other musicians.
Kudos to Steve Miller for slamming the Hall of Shame, much deserved. No surprise that Dolly Parton caved, when she did the Stairway to Heaven cover 20 years ago that wasn't my cup of tea. She's o.k. for what she does but isn't even close to rock..... way back in 1988 I remember driving to a ticket agency after work to pay $100 for a 5th row floor seat to see Metallica at Long Beach Arena which at the time that was a lot of $$$ and I thought that was crazy. Today that would probably be a couple of thousand from those same ticket shysters. Metallica is not my thing anymore and I wouldn't pay 10 cents to see them..
Yeah, I was sorry to hear about Dolly actually trying a rock album... I love Dolly and her folk and country music, but, well... 🤔 Even so, her Bluegrass cover of Stairway I find enjoyable (though other Bluegrass bands have done a better job, such as Iron Horse)!
As residencies go….we vote with our dollars. The more tickets they sell at higher and higher prices, the stronger the incentive for the top dogs to do a residency. Maybe as we age and the supergroups do too it is easier on them. I’ve been a U2 fan since the 1980’s and will not be going to the MSG bowl. I much prefer shows in smaller more intimate venues. I’d rather spend the extra cash on the bands merch, and support a younger or less popular band that is working hard to move up and do what they love cause that is where the energy is.
I have seen U2 a couple of times, but only coz my sister payed for my ticket, I certainly wouldn't have bought one. They are very good live, but when Bono starts droning on about poverty etc and how we all should be giving more to charity it really pisses me off. They are all multi millionaires who don't have to worry about the ever increasing cost of living crisis that us working people do.If Bono wants people to help the rest of the world he should start by slashing ticket and merch prices to an acceptable level for his fans.
I may be totally wrong. I understand the disagreements over worthiness of the hof, and even the process. The definition of rock and roll will never be clarified because of the dishonesty behind it. However, and i dont know for sure, but my thought is that the ceremony is conducted by a foundation as a fundraiser. Hi profile fundraisers often have a big price tag beyond the principle honorees, so the rrhoff would not be paying for band members.
the rock and roll hall of fame is just a business, they dont care about who gets in, when they opened it up to rap and top ten pop it became clear. they ran out or rock and roll artists so in order to keep the money flowing they sold out. if i was a big rock star and they invited me to join i would do the same thing steve miller did accept when they gave me the award i would toss it across the stage and tell them to go pound salt and if they use my name or music they have to pay.
Steve Miller... the only man out there with a greatest hits album that's filled with actual greatest hits -- NO FILLER! What happened after Abracadabra? That was like the end of his Midas Touch.
@Terrence's Classic Rock Corner Podcast I remember that one song in the late 80s which seemed like he wasn't even trying anymore... almost as if he was forced into releasing something.
Why do people pay $500 for a bottle of Dom Perignon? Perhaps because it's rare and the best so I can actually understand why McCartney or The Stones charge premium prices for their tickets. Sooner than later, they will be gone forever. Unfortunately I can no longer afford tickets for these artists and that's sad, but I can't afford Dom Perignon either 😢
I can't stand people recording live shows. Be in the moment and let the art inspire you! (this is different to a tapers section like the Grateful Dead)
Wow, way too much to comment on today. I’ll stick to ticket prices. Going to see an artist used to be reasonable. If you had a low paying job ( minimum wage) you could splurge and have at least one good night enjoying an artist. Now holyshit, how anyone can afford to see any band or artist is something I just can’t comprehend. Rock shows in my opinion are mostly for the young. I look at Springsteen and the rest and see my father’s Guy Lombardo.
I hadn't heard the Steve Miller speech. Bravo to Steve. The RR hall of fame is meaningless. Ticket prices. I wouldn't pay $200-$1000 bucks to see any of these bands at the height of their careers let alone at the twilight.
I started going to concerts in the late 60's. Hendrix, Lee Michaels, Alice Cooper, Mountain, Bob Seger, to name a few. NEVER did I pay more than SIX BUCKS for a ticket! Oh, I forgot Grateful Dead...who I didn't care for....
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine the only way I would spend "hundreds" of dollars for a concert ticket, would be a Beatles reunion! (All four original members). I think I don't have to worry about "robbing the piggy bank" for that one...🤔
Yah, go through the list of Rockers NOT in the RRHF like say Jethro Tull, and you wonder what the metric is to get inducted. Dolly Parton?!?! LOL. LMAO.
my guess would be artists they think would draw a tv audience for the show or in the case of rush would draw fans to the show, maybe to vote or get a ticket you had to join and they were short of members.
Back in the day I thought the Rock Hall was a good idea. I also read Rolling Stone. But as the "Hall" added more and more performers who have nothing to do with rock I became less and less interested. Never been and no longer much consider it. And I haven't read that POS Rolling Stone in a long long time. Decades. BTW my favorite band is in so I have no bitch there. But Dolly Parton is in and Jethro Tull is not? Right. And there's a whole bunch more.
I'd have to disagree with you on Billy Joel. While he has had his residency at MSG, he is still touring as well albeit not as much as he used to. Some of these artists are just too old to do long tours any longer. I love Billy and though I saw him in his prime and as recently as 10 years ago, I wouldnt go see him again for the simple fact he hasnt written anything new in 30 years.
Michael my brother. As always you're right on the money. I miss sometimes on getting to your commentaries. I'm with you in my thoughts on this topic and many, many more! Keep on rockin man! Sincerely, Jeff!👍👍🤟🤟
It's pretty sad when you have to make excuses and justify $80 "cheap" seats and $350 premium ones. No artist is worth this jind of money to me. I was fortunate enough to enjoy shows in the 70s and 80s for single digit prices. And this was when any of those bands still touring were in their prime and had all or most of the members that made the music. In the last few years I have taken my kids to some rock type shows including Korn, Shinedown and Imagine Dragons. The most expensive price I paid for a ticket for a very good seat location was $65. There is no reason for prices to start at $80 for a seat that is useless to enjoy the show.i don't see this getting any better though I know some artists don't charge as much. But this really sucks for the average person who wants to attend
People crap on Metallica because of the Napster thing but they've always considered their fans in what they do. The current tour is always two shows per city, no repeats between the two shows, and it's still relatively affordable. Also, sorry to say, but I've always hated Billy Joel.
Maybe Dolly is getting senile in her old age? Happens to some at her age. Billy has been getting lazier as the years pass. Steve Miller always had my respect as a unique rocker. I'm a Metallica fan since back in '83, so they have always had my respect. Metallica doesn't NEED money! They made plenty of it in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's. Forget these other so-called artists and The Hall of Shame Mafia.

You got to wait till the show starts and the scalpers are stuck with unsold tickets, but to save hundreds of dollars, I'll miss the first song.
Great video Brother! I always loved Steve Miller! ❤
It's always been the Rock and Roll Hall Of Shame.
...mjm...
Amen, and oh yeah AMEN to that Michael! ❤❤❤
I remember when Rock was against the government but now they carry all the water
I've given up on the Hall.
A whole lot of people agree with you William!❤❤❤
Dolly is a sweetheart human being. It would take a lot for me to not forgive her.
I think that's why they avoided maiden as Bruce could be liable to go off on them or not accept the award.
The tickets should be $40, they don't need the $$$, great video Micheal, keep going from Canada ❤️
Miller spoke for everyone upset at this paper bag organization. Great video sir.
RRHOF induction criteria is nothing like we think it is. It is a complete CON.
I've given up on live gigs, everyone with f#£% phones, just sick of it
You ever get a phone call from a friend that you don't speak to every day, the phone call goes on for about 10 minutes and afterwards you walk away happy for a few hours?
That's how I feel when I go on UA-cam and see a new video by Michael.
It's gonna be a good 10-12 minutes, I'm generally going to be on the same boat, not always, but most of the time.
I walk away happy.
Another good analysis!!!!
And KUDOS to Steve Miller.. F***k the R&RHofF.
Very well said!
Are you still walking West, Will? 😉
Some times when you’re over 70 it gets a little harder to be touring all over the place and have to make a compromise as in a residency or retirement.
There are several rock stars in the country music HOF.
"The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a piss stain." John Lydon
What is the shirt your wearing?
Clapton started the residency gravy train: at least 200 shows at the RAH.
Agree💯%
A Tribal Elder has spoken!
Thanx Book!❤❤❤
in '91 i got to see 3 outta the Big 4 and Alice In Chains for $20. i'd hate to see what that same gig would cost in '23.
The old days it was same price for every ticket 15 dollars
When I saw Iron Maiden back in October tickets started around $65 and they had new music.
Bruce Dickinson will give Steve Miller's RHOF acceptance speech a "run for the money"...
If Maiden ever actually gets inducted/accepts...
@@Beethoven5th I would pay money to see that .
i just came across an interview 2005 creativeworkx with bruce dickinson and jannick gers of iron maiden. about being inducted into some hall of fame. bruce, asked said it was meaningless to him but great for the fans and those are the people who count.jannick said if you live your life just wanting to be in a hall of fame you're being a bit silly. it was for the fans. and good for steve miller for speaking out about this.
I actually enjoy the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. It covers a wide range of artists and the name is truth in advertising.
I saw Billy Joel the past several years for $60 a ticket, this year the tickets are in the $400 range
I’m a total fan of Billy as you are, and I understand his age getting in the way, but when he does a residency, the Elton fires a residency, who tells U2 to take up residency, and they told 2 friends, and so on, and so on…
It’s the hurt to the industry that I mind! ❤❤❤
Oh yes she does. Um Rock comes from Country and Blues. Stop talking about a musical genre you know nothing about. And it was created in the South, and she is from the South.
@@Unsweetened8618 LOL... whatever 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Yeah the music genre you think you have ownership over, was created by uh diverse group of people in the South. Not the North or Great Britain. We set the trends.
Love the topic, Michael, but can't agree on the Billy Joel assessment. He still tours and is generally very good to his fans.
Preach Brother!!!!!!!!!!
Rock hall of fame is just the mutual masturbation society
It just started getting confusing when they started Inducting people like eminum, jay z, L l cool j, N w a,
You forgot to mention that Billy Joel is doing tours while doing his residency.
I say the hell with the rock and roll hall of Fame or the hall of shame a total sham of an award show
And Gary hit BINGO!!! Thanx brother!❤❤❤
Whoa Brother
Dolly is no rock hero. But she damn sure ain’t a Zero.
I kindly ask you to recant that !!
Wonderfully stated NY Guy!
Today it’s pack ‘em in move ‘em out!
I feel like I’m watching a rerun of Rawhide brother!😉👌❤
Go Steve 👌👌😉
I blame high ticket prices on the Eagles, they were the first to get $100 a pop back in in 1991.
Past UA-cam videos of performances or REHOF are 👍. It's a shame how its turned out.
the rock and roll hall of fame is just a business, they dont care about who gets in, when they opened it up to rap and top ten pop it became clear. they ran out or rock and roll artists so in order to keep the money flowing they sold out. if i was a big rock star and they invited me to join i would do the same thing steve miller did accept when they gave me the award i would toss it across the stage and tell them to go pound salt and if they use my name or music they have to pay.
Very cheap for Metallica that’s awesome! 🤘🔥🤘
Steve Miller told them what they needed to hear. They didn't listen. The system is as they designed it: THEIR party.
Steve Miller... the only man out there with a greatest hits album that's filled with actual greatest hits -- NO FILLER! What happened after Abracadabra? That was like the end of his Midas Touch.
Oh, how so damned-well true Kitchener! ❤❤❤
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Best Of Cream from 1969 has no filler. Just sayin'.
@Terrence's Classic Rock Corner Podcast I remember that one song in the late 80s which seemed like he wasn't even trying anymore... almost as if he was forced into releasing something.
oh come on, Wide River from 1993 was a fairly decent album. his 80's stuff were a hit and miss.
@@chrisstory563 Your ex said you were FAIRLY DECENT in bed. Congrats!
The RR Hall of Fame is an idea that has run it's course.
The RRHOF is a joke and I wouldn't blame anyone for refusing an invitation for induction!
👍
Bad move Dolly you let them b.s.you. You are no rock and roll!
Spot on kenneth!❤❤❤
Most metal bands never have high price tickets it seems...Dave Mustain never charges alot for his shows
I’ve heard the same Bob!
Maybe there’s a video I could do in the future! ❤❤❤
Even Paul McCartney & Wings, Led Zeppelin, & The Who never cost me more than $22.50 wobblinwheel! ❤❤❤
Right. And there's a whole bunch more.
if Jethro Tull is not in the R&R Hall of Fame, then the accolade to be in it is pretty lame.
Jethro Tull (Ian Anderson) doesn’t give two shits about the RRHOF.
Metallica is long since over ..
Sincerely,
Jeff!👍👍🤟🤟
Billy Joel is not Rock, he is more in the category of Vaudeville, Show Tunes and Pop, though he has been influenced by Rock
I’ve always seen him as Pop-Rock Apostasy! And Nylon Curtain is even a bit of a concept album. I really love that album!❤❤❤
Kudos to Metallica
