    Thank you so much for your vulnerability in posting this. I watched this video throughout my morning like I was chatting with a friend. I had to pause a few times to chat back to you. lol I simply could not agree with every single word you said more. I'm a little earlier in my journey - a year and a half in but right there in the same struggle bus, equal parts loving what I create and also wallowing in a pit of overworked, overwhelming anxiety over if I miss creating content for even a single day I lose so much money. You hit the nail on the head when you said owning a business right now is not for the weak of heart. lol I sincerely hope you have all the blessings and fortunate circumstances and are able to find an amazing home for your family and your business. When you work for yourself this hard our home really does feel like the foundation that fuels inspiration and ability to create.

      I appreciate this comment so much and relate to you so much as well! It's hard out here, for real! I wish people could talk more openly about it because people need to know more than just the positives and encouragement- they need to know what to avoid and how to save on mistakes and money, at least as much as possible!

    I’m a tired 45 yr old full time vet nurse. Who loves astrology/ tarot / music. Takes care of my mom 84 yrs olds and my 13 yrs old cat.
    Began my soap business back in 2019. Did well for a year. Mostly Etsy. After Covid all changed and I now have a more exhausting vet tech job
    Stopped making soaps and trying to figure out how to get back into a business again.

    That was really great and informative. I started out selling just Herbal Balms and salves, but in order to sell in the warmer months, I started making soaps. Now I'm looking to do this as my retirement career. I've always been creative and love gardening got my degree in Horticulture, but only ever used it in my own yard, so soap making feeds all those needs. I forage a lot of my herbs that I use in my products. Wonderful to meet another NY soap artist. I'm in the Hudson and Delaware Valley part of NY.

      Thank you so much for your comment! I am thrilled to meet another NY soapmaker as well! You aren't far! I love that you forage and use it, that's so cool! Do you make lip balms at all? We are looking for someone....

    I’m a mom with a child on the spectrum and both me and my partner are also on the spectrum. Been trying to figure out how to dive into the soap business because I’ve always been interested in it and because it has become more difficult for me to work your “typical 9-5” job especially being here in nyc. It’s so expensive here 😩😭. If I dive in now I would be handling starting up a soap business, managing college, and being a mom to a 6 yr old. This video helped me tremendously because many don’t talk about these things.

    People have been meaner since covid in my opinion. Screw em. Was at a show yesterday where all my neighbors were debating bible verses and trying to recruit us...ugh. I totally agree with you on everything. I been working a full-time job since I started back with making this a serious business a number of years ago...20 year soap maker here. I work a minimum of 70 hours a week up to 100. I am 50 this year and it's killing me. Everything you said is 💯

    • @birdsofvalhalla
      @birdsofvalhalla  7 місяців тому

      This sounds very challenging and petty. As if it's not hard enough. I do understand what you mean about "since covid." 20 years is a good long time- and 70 hours a week is unbelievable. You must have some incredible stamina. I am impressed but also a little worried about you and your health. That's such a toll on your health. It's crazy because as a chef- I had to get away from kitchens due to the stress, the long hours on my feet and here I am working twice as many in the same environment. Have you been able to hire yet?

    Instead of a subscription of a full soap what about a subscription of one or two half bars? Maybe a subscription box of a half bar of soap with matching lip balm, candle or some such? Plus a small merch item? Theme boxes?

    • @birdsofvalhalla
      @birdsofvalhalla  7 місяців тому +1

      Hey, Kat! We are actually working on making half bars as our bars have become over 6 oz on average in the past year. Because the recipe lasts so long, people have been asking for smaller, less expensive bars and I think we are going to try this sooner rather than later.

      @@birdsofvalhalla I think that’s a wise idea. I used to buy soap on the regular from a woman in the Smokies but she stopped selling. Best soap ever and I’d not found an equal until you. She had a ylang ylang blend that would send you to your knees. You’re on par. I think three ounce bars would kick. If it were in my budget I’d do a bar a month, especially if I could add to it when something special comes up.

    My son has Autism and he's 28. My 20-year-old daughter is out of the house. My son stays with me, I will inherit the house with no mortgage. I am a single mom, and I do work full-time. I rather do it myself. I have no desire to hire people.

      Hey Chef! Yeah, this does not surprise me whatsoever. There's no shame in having this or a mixed approach. When you run a business, it's a full time job. If you are creating your own product, that's another full time job easily and don't underestimate the cleaning and shipping.

    It’s amazing how many of us soap makers have similar backgrounds. I started as a custom dessert and cake artist. Did it for years and was successful. Got burnt out BAD on that. Am an artist. Decided to take up a soap hobby. Turned into a business. I do a lot of vendor events. Materials are getting so ridiculous😢. I also have 3 kiddos. 21,14 and 4. The younger two are autistic. I also have 5 parrots 🦜 🤓
    💯 agree not to make a million different products. I learned that the hard way. I’m currently in the process of eliminating products and focusing on just a handful of products
    I’ve heard awful things about TikTok shop. So many businesses are closing their TikTok shops down because of how asinine TikTok is.

    • @birdsofvalhalla
      @birdsofvalhalla  7 місяців тому +1

      SO many of us struggled with cancer or serious illness, abuse, undiagnosed or late diagnosed mental health issues or disabilities. So many of us just want to make a modest living and support our families and be creative. Materials are insane. Natural soap is now $17.25 as an average. We are overdue to raise our prices. I saw today that Brambleberry has started making some of their 16 oz bottles 14 and the prices are still climbing. It's rough out there. 3 kids and 5 parrots? What kind of birds? Are we TWINS? What's your soap specialty?

      @@birdsofvalhalla cold process soap with hemp seed oil and clays. Love the way clay soap feels.
      I have 2 green cheek conures, 1 sun conure, 1 English budgie, 1 normal budgie. Thinking about adding a male eclectus but they are hard to find in rescues around here and their price has double with breeders in the last 18 months.
