Thanks Jim! This was my first video on coleus and my first video on Holiest of Coleus. I had just gotten some coleus cuttings and wanted to keep them alive, as I had failed in every plant I’d planted since moving to Tennessee. I noticed the lady that I bought the coleus from had hers in planters and you had too. So now it’s two months later, and I know I’m in the wintering season, but I was able to keep my coleus alive for two months! And I’m so excited to try to winter them and plant my seeds I bought from your EBay store! Now I’m hooked on coleus! I’ve watched some of your videos as far back as two years so far. I’m a fan!

Be patient...don't overehelm yourself as I did starting out by not realizing those tiny seeds like St Bernard puppies will soon grow to be big plants so start off with a modest plan with your planters... ( I grew 1,000 Coleus one year) too much even for my Farmers Market. Over time experience and applying things I've repeated many times over in my Videos you'll start to improve and have fun!!! THANK U SO MUCH!!!
Thanks for the many useful tips. My project for next spring is to grow several huge coleus in planters. I think they are so attractive and easy to care for. Now, I know why mine didn't grow as large this summer because of the container size. I'm always learning something new on your channel.

Another trick I learned off of UA-cam is when you're repotting a plant take that empty pot that's the same size as your plant put it inside the pot you're going to use now. Then put all your soil around that empty pot and it makes the exact size that you'll need to put your transplant in the whole will be just right. Then take the empty pot out put the plant in and there's very little mess . And I recycle my potting mix it's probably sometimes 10% or a little more of what I'm using for my plants

I have been using half Miracle-Gro potting mix and Lowe's brand of peat moss that's called Stay Green it's in a bag loose not like in those big bales that they sell. It also has some fertilizer in it. But I add a little bit of worm castings and some more osmocote and my secret ingredient which is soil moist that's the brand name. They're little crystals or polymers that absorbs 50 times their weight and water a bag that weighs a pound will do 50 hanging baskets. My coleus especially the cuttings love to be in a pot with that added because it gives them some extra moisture they can draw on if they've dried out because of the wind or a hot day. And you know coleus don't like to dry out. I also give them the leftover water from my orchids which also contains seaweed Emulsion fertilizer and I've just added something new and it's calmag I added it because orchids are calcium Hogs but I haven't really used it much on my other plants I've only had it a short. Of time. It was $16 for a bottle of liquid but $9 shipping so that would have meant 25 bucks but for $32 I could get another bottle and free shipping so that's what I did. The seaweed Emulsion fertilizer is great it does not stink and it has trace minerals and lots of hormones in for the plants. When you see my coleus you'll know it's really working I've never had such a huge coleus from seed before

Hi Jim, I just discovered you. Do you have any suggestions for finding coleus in California? Big box stores have some generic types but local nurseries are selling Specific varieties for $12.95 for a 2.5" pot. That seems crazy. I love your enthusiasm for coleus, I'd buy a shirt!
Hi Jessica.... There are two websites I frequent....one that sells a huge variety of live Coleus plugs and ships them...but at this time most are out of stock.... they may have a few.....but save them for next year....January they start taking delivery orders at www.rosydawngardens.com Also try www.swallowtailgardenseed.com I'm trying to find a shirt wholesaler that will make them reasonably priced .....the one I have now fir my own shirts would put my retail price for a shirt at around $25. But I could order one for you let me know size & color. I accept PayPal. Thank you sooo much for following along. I'll be posting a new video soon!!
My daughter grew several varieties of coleus this year and gave me a 6 inch pot packed with starts. I've cut and rooted them twice and need to do it again, they grow like weeds. Her Coleus is now blooming but all of her plants have always been indoors under grow lights. She recently mentioned the timer quit on her lights and were in 24 hours! Perhaps that triggered the bloom. Did you ever get your plant to bloom ?
Hi. I have recently discovered my love if coleus and gardening in general. I am in England and want to buy the rare coleus plants. Can you advise me where I can get them from please ?
Hi Julie....I know if two online Coleus sellers. Not certain if they ship To UK. Both are fabulous. www.rosydawngardens.com and www.swallowtailgardenseed.com
Maybe if you give that fishnet stockings plant some seaweed fertilizer it has hormones in that help the plant maybe it would stimulate seed setting for that plant Lowe's doesn't sell it but Home Depot did but now I don't see it on the Shelf anymore so I guess I'm going to have to buy it online it's the Alaska brand just like the fish Emulsion fertilizer but I don't think people realize how great the seaweed Emulsion fertilizer is. Now you have lots of things to read take care of my coleus friend
Im just started mine having 80 something varieties and still babies! Will see what will happened as our weather now is summer ( Philippines). Thanks for sharing this idea. See you around.
Hi Lillian.... Each February I start about 500 Coleus most which I eventually pot and sell at a Local Farmers market. Thru the Spring & Summer I create How to Videos for all of you to follow .... As Summer comes to an end...95% of my Coleus are Sold. Other specific Coleus are strategically placed around my property where I allow them to go to Seed....separated to minimize cross pollination. When I Harvest the seed stalks from those Coleus ....keep them until the Frost kills them . This year I am overwintering just two medium sized Coleus which I do not have seeds and was unable to coax the development of seed stalks.... I Harvest thousands of seeds of between 8-10 of the varieties shown on my UA-cam channel which I sell on my active Ebay listing "JIMS COLEUS" And then in February... I Start it all again and sow the seeds I have. I also keep about 20 Cuttings which are now healthy Rootings in bud vases of water which I keep alive all Fall, Winter and Spring...eventually I plant them in my Jumbo outdoor Planters to enjoy on my property. Thank you for the Question.... I appreciate your watching and taking the time to comment.
If you are buying store bought Coleus that are already grown & in pots Plant them about 6-8" apart. But if you want to make a dramatic ground covering appearance than you can plant them closer
What would happen if I plant them in the ground? Would it get out of control?. I don't want a SUPER invasive plant that's going to make my life difficult. Coleus's are so pretty but I don't want to plant them in a pot. But I'm afraid, if I plant them in the ground it's going to become a headache
Great question.....Coleus can grow well if planted directly in the ground....and depending on your weather are quick growing but most varieties are not terribly invasive like say marigolds can be . The larger leaf varieties tend to grow tall as opposes to the smaller trailing varieties that are lower ground cover types. One thing is that the larger leaf ones like Kong can by nature of their size overtake lower plants so if you do plan on including them in your ground gardening.... organize with the Coleus in the back and lower plants like impatient etc in the front. Also one last caveat...Cedar mulch is poisonous to Coleus and should not be used as cover.
I maybe this fall we could trade cuttings because it won't be so terrible to mail cuttings when the weather is cooler in a ziplock bag and they would be some fresh sprouts. We had talked about it before trading cuttings those true the black stockings and the Saturn I would like cuttings of and I'm sure there's other ones that I would like to have
Ok...Will give it a try!!! I can replicate one of my Coleus suppliers way of packing them with paper towel tubing and sealing the rootball with plastic. Will give it a shot!!
My Color Blaze Lime Coleus from Proven Winners got HUGE. All I did was plant it in miracle grow soil, and then mulch on top. Filled the entire area. But mine were in the ground, not pots... Water every other day.
Hi Bean!! I get new Coleus from Rosydawn gardens each year. The plants they send me grow into strong healthy Coleus!! Proven Winner are excellent. One thing about mulch...be careful..."Cedar mulch" is poisonous to Coleus. But if your coleus have thrived..then it may not be true high percentage cedar .
Jim I just posted a video that part 3 and I show some of my coleus that I grew from seed and they're huge the leaves are as big as my hand if not bigger and they were just regular rainbow coleus mix I'm going to do a video of all my Coleus and their growth and especially some unusual coleus That Grew From seed. I just thought you might like to see a couple of them that are in the part 3 video of a reporting video of a houseplant. I would like your opinion on why their leaves are so huge they're like Kong coleus. And I have one that's almost 3 ft tall with huge leaves that I'm going to do with my coleus video in the next couple days
! Hi there guy I don't think the coleus are going to like this cold weather that's a preview of fall after all that heat wave and drought! I'm going to do another coleus video but it's been crazy with trying to keep up with the water for the plants the dry leaves from the trees lose their leaves early because of the drought and then moving the plants in and out of the wind and the rain are into the rain trying to repot what the wind keeps blowing over because my elephant ears have gotten much bigger and it seems I don't have a chance to video what I want hopefully maybe I can do that tomorrow but I just wonder I've never had coleus get so large and I've grown coleus from seed before. I'm wondering if it's because I did such a good job with a soil and added osmocote worm compost Epsom salts and my magic soil moist crystals to the potting mix
@@kathleenmurphy2379 I'm certain your Coleus are thriving and have grown huge foliage because of great fertile soil and perfect watering. Also the attention you put towards them !!
Hello Arun. Not all potting soils are alike. Some of the cheaper Dollar store brands are loaded with coarse sticks and little sphagnum and perlite moisture retention ingredients. But in General Potting soil is blends of Peat Sphagnum Moss and bark shreddings or fines....plus moisture retention perlite crystals.
Hi Anthony....Actually both the Overwintered Coleus and Rooting go dormant. They both molt, lose color Vibrancy and thin out.....they may develop seed stalks but their growth will continue but drastically slow..... Some Rootings and Overwintered Coleus plants I keep don't make it thru Winter.....it depends on how bad a Winter We get here as well. Also additional items such as an my enclosed plastic indoor greenhouse coupled with a Full Spectrum grow light help boost my overwintered Coleus. Good Question.
Hi Tracy ABSOLUTELY!! But with one Caveat....NO CEDAR MULCH!! It is poisonous to Coleus. Place them in well draining soil in a place that gets a good mix of Sun & some shade.
So I’ve been growing quite coleus is in pots and do well but this year when I put some in the ground every single one of them died. What am I doing wrong? Also I see some of yours getting sun I thought they couldn’t have direct sun
Hi McAdoo.....Ill try to answer best I can without knowing further details I may not be entirely accurate....like your general location....weather conditions or how far along your Coleus were and where you planted them. In General....Coleus do best in Containers or Pots....but that doesn't mean you can't grow them directly in the ground...... If you grew these Coleus from seed on your own or bought them from an enclosed Plant Store/ Nursery.....before they can be planted outdoors....they must be conditioned to withstand the stresses of the outdoors....Sun, wind, temperature fluctuations etc....particularly young Coleus. Look thru my list of Videos for "Hardening Coleus" . Also Coleus do best in a location which gets a mixture of Sun and Shade. True I have Coleus growing in Direct Sun 🌞 but they were fully hardened, in good quality Well drained pots filled with potting soil and are watered Daily to prevent wilting. One other thing....if you are Cedar mulching around your Coleus....remove the mulch as most cedar mulches are poisonous to Coleus . It also could be the soil your planting them in doesn't drain well....perhaps there's weed killer residue ( OK I'm reaching now Lol) . You can try a different variety there?? What type were you growing??? I don't plant any directly in the ground...but I've seen some planted around as tree skirts at some local Municipal parks....so it can be done. Hope this gets the wheels turning on possibly finding out the whys? Experience and Experimentation is the best way . Good Luck!!! Let me know how u make out .
By the way I let a bunch of my coleus go to seed so I was wondering how do you know when the seed is ready to harvest thanks... Some of my coleus Scott taller than waist-high I'm going to try to post a video this week of all the coleus but I grew from seed and my mother plants it's breaking my heart not to be able to bring them inside this week it's supposed to get down to 50 and the coleus aren't going to like that
Hi Kathleen. I know how you feel..but as long as you have seeds you will always have Coleus!!! Here is my video that will help you decide when to cut the stalks ua-cam.com/video/NvCY0FTtMPA/v-deo.html
When my Coleus are about 3 months old and I pot them up I lightly mix in either Miracle-Gro or Osmocote timed release General Purpose Plant fertilizer pellets in the soil....which feeds slowly as your watering. Once they are mature plants I switch to the water soluable Miracle-Gro General Purpose Plant food...I mix it into a 2 gallon water can and fertilize that way every 10-12 days....but during Heatwaves...I greatly cut back on fertilizer because it causes accelerated top & stem growth which the roots may not be able to support. Coleus do not need alot of fertilizer....What I do suggest especially when potting is a Good Quality Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Soil. Great soil gives great results and with fertilizer watering and trimming....Great Coleus
Another question for you besides checking my Coleus and not telling me why they're so huge as far as the leaves are concerned and they weren't Kong coleus how did you manage to get almost 2,000 subscribers and how long did it take you to get to the 1700 that you have.... and why don't you have advertisements on your videos? I know someone who hit a thousand subscribers I think it's jolene's plants or something like that and she showed the first check she got and it was over $600.
Gaining SUBSCRIBERS happens slowly and gradually over time. Most of my videos are monetized.....I've clicked on many and have gotten Advertisers. Friends mentioned that they've seen ads on my videos. How much each UA-camr makes depends on a few factors..... I've made about $200 .... It depends on how much effort and videos and views of Advertising videos .
I saw a girl I think her name is Jolene and her husband films for her and she post videos and they reached a thousand subscribers and she went commercial and her first check I guess because of how many people viewed her videos was for over $600 she's the only person I've ever seen give that information on their Channel. Someone told me the key is to just keep making videos and get yourself out there with new videos all the time. One thing I thought was interesting is that I did a short 3-minute video on shopping at Lowe's and I think it's had almost 200 views it would have been longer but my phone died so that caused the end of that video
Hey :) thanks for making so Many great videos. I watch em all. I’m struggling with mildew and a green worms eating my plants. The mildew is it because they lack ventilation?
If your getting little mushrooms too that's too much sustained water....mildew is similar...it thrives on constantly being moist.... make sure you increase the sunlight and depending upon your pot size skip a day of watering g until the soil is dry on top but still damp a few inches down. Do not let your plants dry completely. Spray that Insect soap until the worms and bugs subside. You can do it!!
Woah!!!! You literally ONLY use Miracle Grow Pottiong Mix?? You do add ANY other soil amendments? Such as more perlite? Activated Charcoal? Orchid Bark? Nothing right?!?!?
I use Moisture control Miracle-Gro potting soil which has the perlite mixed in...other than that I've gotten best results with occasional feeding of Miracle-Gro General Purpose plant food
Nooooo. Don't through a broken branch away. Stick it into the soil under the plant. you won't even need to trim leaves unless there are a lot and/or are big leaves. Once the roots form pot it and keep or gift it.
Lol...When I have over 600 Coleus....I sometimes get to a point where I can't pot anymore.....so I'll throw away some of the branches I don't want or don't need to root. Thanks 😊

Also I learned from Maria of Maria's Gardens down in Florida who has her own succulent Nursery. She has desert roses and all kinds of succulents and grows them all herself. She suggests using Lowe's brand of soil called Stay Green and I use that it's appears to have bark in it and I use maybe half that and half or a little bit more than half the Stay Green peat moss. They both also have added fertilizer along with the osmocote that I put in

There are two websites I frequent....one that sells a huge variety of live Coleus plugs and ships them...but at this time most are out of stock.... they may have a few.....but save them for next year....January they start taking delivery orders at www.rosydawngardens.com
Also try www.swallowtailgardenseed.com
I'm trying to find a shirt wholesaler that will make them reasonably priced .....the one I have now fir my own shirts would put my retail price for a shirt at around $25. But I could order one for you let me know size & color. I accept PayPal. Thank you sooo much for following along. I'll be posting a new video soon!!
I love Coleus and yours are so beautiful!!
Thank you Debbie. Have you ever grown a few for yourself??
Jim's Wholiest of Coleus Not from a seed. I’ve got some in soil and some in water. They are doing very well. I would like to more varieties
Very good colors collection

Coleus lindos. Amo sua coleção.
Si!! Amo colecao!!
Beautiful, thank you for sharing!! Great info!!
Hey Freddie!! Appreciate you taking the time out to comment!!! Hope you Subscribe....check out my many videos and future ones as well!!!
Thank You Kathleen....sorry I missed a few of your comments. I appreciate the advice. The Black Stockings is in great shape but still no seeds :(
nice one Jim more coleus uploads.
Thank you Cecilia!!!
Im just started mine having 80 something varieties and still babies! Will see what will happened as our weather now is summer ( Philippines). Thanks for sharing this idea. See you around.
I would like to know what you do in the winter time with them?
I appreciate your watching and taking the time to comment.
wow thank you really nice. hope to plant my in the ground. how far do i plant them apart?
If you are buying store bought Coleus that are already grown & in pots
Plant them about 6-8" apart.
I am not sure some say you have to put the seed in the freezer before planting. I have not seen any of these guys say that
Some think that seeds need to be stored in the freezer to mimic hibernation...but I store the seeds in a cool dry dark place. Seeds may last 5 years
Jim I just posted a video that part 3 and I show some of my coleus that I grew from seed and they're huge the leaves are as big as my hand if not bigger and they were just regular rainbow coleus mix I'm going to do a video of all my Coleus and their growth and especially some unusual coleus That Grew From seed.
I will look through your channel once I get some spare time. Been a bit crazy over here!! Thank You Kathleen!!
What's the composition of potting mix.
Hello Arun. Not all potting soils are alike. Some of the cheaper Dollar store brands are loaded with coarse sticks and little sphagnum and perlite moisture retention ingredients.
But in General Potting soil is blends of Peat Sphagnum Moss and bark shreddings or fines....plus moisture retention perlite crystals.
i get confused about Coleous. If the summer plant goes dormant cause of changing of season, why would a cutting continue to grow?
Hi Anthony....Actually both the Overwintered Coleus and Rooting go dormant. They both molt, lose color Vibrancy and thin out.....they may develop seed stalks but their growth will continue but drastically slow.....
Some Rootings and Overwintered Coleus plants I keep don't make it thru Winter.....it depends on how bad a Winter We get here as well. Also additional items such as an my enclosed plastic indoor greenhouse coupled with a Full Spectrum grow light help boost my overwintered Coleus. Good Question.
Do you put coleus right into the flower bed? I’m thinking of doing that!
Hi Tracy ABSOLUTELY!! But with one Caveat....NO CEDAR MULCH!! It is poisonous to Coleus. Place them in well draining soil in a place that gets a good mix of Sun & some shade.
@@Jimswholiestofcoleus oh wow! Thank you! Didn’t know that 😮
Thank you. Do you know how I can get the version that is beautifully red?
That is the Defiance Coleus. I have an ebay listing of Coleus seeds I sell which will include Defiance Coleus.

Hello...have you ever plant Coleus from the seed?
Yes I have grown thousands of Coleus from seed over the years. I also sell them on Ebay under JIMS COLEUS
I live in Indonesia, how many days for delivery? Terima kasih (thank you)
Hi what fertiliser do you use
Hi I use "Miracle Grow " Brand General purpose Plant food that I mix in a watering can. I feed my Coleus every 10-14 days
What fertiliser do you use for ur coleus plss share
Enjoy planting
You too!! Thank you for watching !!
One thing I thought was interesting is that I did a short 3-minute video on shopping at Lowe's and I think it's had almost 200 views it would have been longer but my phone died so that caused the end of that video
great video :)
Much appreciated!!!
Sir my coleus are very beautiful i have 80 plus variety
Very good!
Thank you Mary!!
I thought you were going to say you pinch it back.
I love coleous I feel that I have green hands
Thanks for video
Coleus arent hard to grow!! Yes SUBSCRIBE to my channel and follow along!! I have plenty of how to videos !! Thanks!
Hey :) thanks for making so
Many great videos.
Jim's Wholiest of Coleus thank you Jim 🌱🌱🌿
Let me know how you make out!!
Thanks 😊

The sad news, I lost some of the beautiful colors coleus during our hot summer in Egypt
So sorry Abdallah. :(
It is difficult if your in a very very hot intense sun climate. As much as you may want to water and water them ....myself included...We have our lives to live....Work, Family...Home chores etc....
But the wonderful thing is there is always next season....We can both learn from mistakes we may have done.
But if I remember you sent me pictures?? They were beautiful.
There is near equal sadness here as much of my stock has been sold.... Next Thursday is the last sale.....
Keep in touch Abdallah!!! Dont give up this great Hobby. I use the off months to reflect on what I will do differently and what I will grow in December!!
Show, os seus coleus ficam no sol. Um grande abraço...

And by huge coleus I don't mean the plants you just I have huge plants but I mean the leaves are bigger than my hand
I understand!! Some of the Kong varieties get HUGE Leaves!!
Do you think Kong seed got mixed in with regular seed? I'll do a short video tomorrow and put your name in it so it comes to your attention
