Thank you for that. You made it easy to follow. That said you talk and move very fast so it meant that I had to go back severial times to follow what you were doing. X

You're welcome! and apologies. I will have to slow down next time. Thank you for telling me. I appreciate it! :) Helps my improvement. You can also slow down the videos on UA-cam. Just click on that gear icon (settings) below the video and choose the speed. :) Sometimes I watch videos 1.7x. :) And that's normal for me.

Fantastic. I learned so much. Want to watch several more times to get it all. Affinity is such an amazing find. I have all three modules now.

Thanks a lot for making an Affinity Publisher video! I would really love to learn more about how to use Affinity Publisher to create KDP books.
Can you please make a video on how to use Affinity Publisher to create an entire book, including the interior? I really want to learn about the whole process involved.
I’d like to learn about getting the book size right, how bleed + no bleed works & how to account for it, how to create an interior, how to add page numbers when necessary, and how to export the cover & interior properly in order for it to be accepted on KDP.
It would be really helpful to see an Affinity Publisher video that covers the process of creating a KDP book from start to finish. Most tutorials I’ve seen cover specific aspects of the process, but I have yet to see a comprehensive tutorial that covers the basics and explains how to get the technical parts right. Before I start creating a book in a software, I definitely want to make sure that everything meets KDP standards and there won’t be any problems when I upload the book.

Hi Jet🍒, what's better for image placement, link or embed? I'm a little bit confused about this topic 😬

    • @travelingdesigner
      @travelingdesigner  2 роки тому +1

Linking means adding a file to another file. We can link the file [image, audio, video or document, etc] to any web page or program. Embedding means inserting a file into the existing file. You can maintain control over the source through object linking. Linking places only enough information to allow any program to find the original artwork for display within the image. Linking placed images rather than embedding them keeps the document's file size down and allows the placed artwork to be updated or changed as necessary in its own program. I hope this helps. :)

Why did you pick .125 for the bleed though?
Also, I downloaded the same template with the same book dimensions that you showed here, but it says that the overall dimensions should be 12.588” x 9.250”. I’m assuming this also accounts for bleed. I wasn’t sure so I tried adding bleed to the file, but this caused the template to not match the dimensions of the canvas. There was empty space left on the top & bottom of the cover where the bleed was supposed to be. Since this didn’t work, I tried doing it the way you did by adding the width of both covers of the book + the width of the spine together. After that, I specified .125 for the bleed on the document section designated for bleed. This time, the template matched up correctly to my document. However, I’m still unsure about how you determined that .125 would be the bleed. I want to learn how to do this so that I won’t make a mistake even if I use a different book size.

.125" is KDP's bleed and in most cases the standard is .125". Check out KDP's guidelines here: kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201857950

This is different from how it’s done in Canva. In Canva, I would have just used the overall dimensions specified by the template, which are 12.588” x 9.250”. But this includes the bleed, so it doesn’t look like I can just input these numbers in Affinity Publisher. I had to specify .125 for the bleed on the section of the document setup page designated for bleed. I also had to do the math myself to calculate the width by adding the widths of both the front & back cover with the width of the spine (6 + 6 + 0.338 = 12.338). So, I inputed 12.338” x 9”. I added the bleed separately, and with the bleed included, these dimensions came out to 12.463” x 9.125”. These results are kind of confusing, because even with the bleed added, the dimensions still don’t add up to the exact ‘Overall Dimensions’ that Amazon provided on their template, which are specified as 12.588” x 9.250”. So, Amazon’s numbers for the ‘Overall Dimensions’ are a bit larger than what I got when I added up everything. It is a slight difference but it is still a difference that might be considered incorrect. Can someone help me understand why my calculations came out different from the ‘Overall Dimensions’ provided by Amazon’s template, and if there’s anything I need to do to correct them?
    Thank you 🙏🏻

You can just use Amazon's size and if there's no problem uploading it, good. If there's a problem, point it out to them and ask why and how they can help. :) I always just use Amazon's and I never had any problems. :)

hello, me again... as I had no luck with Canva, bought Affinity. Would like to do a kdp cover. Now, have the same issue! I followed your video guidelines, enter 8.5 x 5.5, however the blank space that comes is larger! tried many times, not sure what's wrong...

Do you have to flatten your images at the end before you export the file to print to pdf. I had an issue with transparencies.

I don't really flatten my layers. I've never had issues with transparencies either. What problem did you encounter? :)

Is a KDP book cover just for Kindles? I want mine for a physical print book, but I don't know if this tutorial is just for kindles?

This can be for any printer you have. Just make sure that wherever you want to print your book, ask for the specifications or even a template from them. Like for KDP, Lulu, and most print on demand sites, they have templates. They're ver specific with the size, margins, bleeds, etc. :)

I normally use Publisher for interiors but you can also use designer if you like. Publisher is like Indesign and Designer is like Photoshop. :) Whichever one you're comfortable using, go for it. :)
