Great Video! Some of these old titles, I've never even heard of before! I enjoyed how you weaved the tumultuous history of Korea into the history of animation. Although, I think some of the earlier titles mentioned were North Korean animations. You could have also touched on North Korea's history of using animation as propaganda, but I understand that the focus is on South Korea. Other important animations I wish you would've mentioned: I wish you included Korean indie/solo internet animations such as "There She Is!" as it was also a major hit in Newgrounds and Yotuube. I would have also included the movie "Padak" as it feels like the only serious 3D animated show that Korea has animated. Also every Korean kid in the 2010s knows about "Larva" being probably up there as one of the most successful animated TV show in Korea.
This was great. As a Portuguese animator, I've heard/seen some of the more recent titles you mention, but was completely ignorant about the political and social context . Brilliant essay. Congratulations.

Great video & informative! I always come across so many great animators & animation artists from korea, but wondered why I dont hear much about original korean animation, aside from kids shows. Glad to have found this video that could answer some of that!
Yobi the Gumiho is my first exposure to korean animation. It is really cool, I still love the story and visual until now! Thank you for this in-depth explanation. It's really interesting to know animation in korea starts from commercials, and develops in korea's historical and political context.
Excellent stuff. You've included a background history which informs the directions of the animation being made. Hmm, I would add one thing and that is that the gruesome nature of South Korean shows like Squid Games comes from 'The Raincoat Killer' reality in Seoul in the early 2000's- people were genuinely scared all over Seoul. I lived in South Korea from 99-06 btw and I used to act on South Korean TV dramas and movies while making content at Ewha Uni.
It's an interesting idea, i'm sure it has had some influence on some writers and directors. but there were plenty of violent movies and brutal muders before 2003. I bet korea was an interesting place for you to be living back then! Thanks for watching Alexander, I really appreciate it :)

I'm surprised you didn't mention Studio Mir, though; I feel like they're known for having a very distinct style and feel, despite primarily working on Western series (they DO have an original series in development, though). Their artists are pretty revered in the industry, and some of them, like Steve Ahn, have made some really cool indie projects in addition to their work for the bigger studios.

Great video, but I'm surprised you didn't mention Korean Manhwa, which is getting extremely popular and has been adapted to multiple Japanese anime. There's a lot about that concerning the situation of Korean animation
Thanks Tim, you're right it is a very strange situation that Manhwa is in. I'm actually saving that topic for a fully dedicated history video in the future. It's still a little early, but think in the next year or so there will be a lot of new developments now that the viability of the material is being noticed :)
I'm Vietnamese living in Vietnam 🇻🇳.The situation of Animation in Vietnam is very bad.Vietnamese Cinema developing good,but just in Live Action,not Animation.I will tell you reason.First :Censorship(too munch reasons).Most Vietnamese adults still think animation is just for kids and they don't have munch times to care and watching. Second :Techniques is good,quality not bad,but we just had 10-20 studios and few donors,lack of 💵moneys,etc...And third is outputs

In the future im hoping more of the outsource work by koreans in anime are atleast acknowledged or credited more. Studio Madhouse's Claymore was mostly animated by DR movie in korea, and unfortunately most of the credit went to madhouse and im kinda worried it's the case for shield hero season 2 which is co animated between Kinema Citrus and DR movie. Also im kinda surprised you didn't mention Wonderful Days which was made by the same team who would later on do the animation for Avatar the last Airbender and then start Studio Mir, which imo is one of the best animation studios in Korea at the moment.
You know, there is this show about this blue bus named tayo. I can’t remember the exact name of the show, but i remember that There were a lot of characters and most of them were cars with faces. There were 4 other buses, and I think one of them was named rogi. I used to enjoy this show when I was 20 years old. It was pretty decent and dealt with certain situations pretty nicely. I think it even had a UA-cam channel. And I didn’t like the other content. Especially the one with the musical scores, there was this duck one, and there was a old macdonald one, which was a rock song, I mean it was kind of good since it reminded me of “smells like teen spirit”. However there was one that I despised the most, and that was the doctor foster one. It kept going on loop the entire song, only with different plots in the animation. And even when the doctor did succeed in getting out of trouble, it was still the same verse.
South Korean Animation is better than N. Korea. Less Propaganda (like Squirrel and Hedgehog) and more Entertainment. Hong Gil-Dong (1967) was ahead of its time despite the limited animation.
That was a very interesting look at a history I only knew a small amount about and before watching your video I always saw Korean Animation not something I was very wanting to check out. But after watching your vid I now have a different view of this and even want to check it out. Of cause I want to see Sun Wukong First 😀 But after ones caught my interest too like the Batman clone one and others. Thank you for the time and very detailed video.
This was interesting to watch! My stepdad is an artist and big in Japanese animation and manga since he was a teen but he can immediately tell the differences in koreas, chinas, and japans animation styles with just a couple of seconds. We always have discussions about animation so I’ll definitely be showing this video to him!! 💕

I think there's also the fact that Korean cartoons are either super korean and not korean at all. There's a burgeoning comic book industry online which animation studios can adapt.

Totally agree, North Korean animation is super interesting. Actually, I'll be covering the history of it after my next anime history video. I expect it to be about an hour long and as I can read Korean, might also try to translate and release some the of the untranslated material I dig up. While it's still far off, I do hope you enjoy it.

Sure, Right now the industry and country is still in a transitional period. Once it stabilizes, I plan to expand it and update. I'm confident there is enough information, but it takes a long time to track it all down and in some cases, translate it. I'll try my best though. I've grown up hearing legends of the animators in korea who work on american shows and that's why I looked this up,,, but I was pleasantly surprised at the history of original works from south korea in this. It's also a cool economic story as well
In 2023 Korean animation are all failed Japan. Suzume have 5.50M tickets record. Slam dunk have 4.70M. The boy and heron have 2.00M. Pororo have 0.18M. Super wings have 0.13M. Carrie and super cola have 0.10M. The summer only have 9000 tickets. And in this year Malaysian animation are passed Korean animation. For example Mechamato have 1.44M tickets. Ejen Ali have 1.20M😢
What will happen if Disney set up Disney Korea Animation Studios and yet it gives Japanese Anime a run for it’s money? Probably Epcot Center in it’s World Showcase removes the Japan Pavilion and South Korea has it’s own Pavilion in Epcot Center. This also could lead of Warner Bros taking over Tokyo Disney because of issues of the Laincourt Rocks, and probably a Disney movie about Marco Polo done in South Korea as people in Japan begin to boycott Disney.

But astroboy, which was about dream and science became mega hit and became famous all around the world, japanese people started having hope that they can stand up again. that became snowball the atmosphere of japan changed of hope. kids at that time started having dream to become scientist, and thats why science developed in japan. So japan started to push anime industry and became animepower country. Its not exaggeration that today's japan power was made because of astroboy
@@YonIon996 Its a complex story. At that era, Korea had nothing because of war. At that period, a dictator rules Korea. Though he was a military dictator, he lead really great economy development. However, it was military dictation, so culture itself couldnt have chance develop that much. And, manga itself was not good image in here. So, how could they get supported from society? there was no way. Now, lets skip to animation skill. for animation making skill, Korea is now very strong in animation subcontracting.(Even North Korea animation skill is very good.) So, they tried to make animation movies in 1980s~2000s, which costed massive money. However, they couldnt make box office hit (I guess because of story). So the investors doesnt support them because its too risky. And just as preoccupation is important, Japanese animation produced many masterpieces at that time. And now this era, a flatform called webtoon is strong in Korea. They gurantee lot of income percentage, so many went to make webtoon. Still some animators here are trying to make movie or animation series, if there is a great author who makes success and get investors come, than it can have possibility that be changed. Last reason is, In fact, it was not cartoons and animations that raised Korea's awareness, but based on live-action images and real-life figures such as movies, dramas, and K-pop. So media doesnt have much interest in animation. Thats the reason and hope it become helps

Bagel Girl is another good example of S. Korean Anime making a spotlight considering that it was made by an independent artist who created the comic.
I'd know about Korean wave, my dad's been watching various live action Korean shows for a couple years.

Why's anime in japan was popular than korea?
because japan pushed anime industry, while korea didnt. Anime meaning is more than anime itself in Japan. After japan lost WW2, every japanese was in low self esteem. But astroboy, which was about dream and science became mega hit and became famous all around the world, japanese people started having hope that they can stand up again. that became snowball the atmosphere of japan changed of hope. kids at that time started having dream to become scientist, and thats why science developed in japan. So japan started to push anime industry and became animepower country. Its not exaggeration that today's japan power was made because of astroboy
@@YonIon996 Its a complex story. At that era, Korea had nothing because of war. At that period, a dictator rules Korea. Though he was a military dictator, he lead really great economy development. However, it was military dictation, so culture itself couldnt have chance develop that much. And, manga itself was not good image in here. So, how could they get supported from society? there was no way.
Now, lets skip to animation skill. for animation making skill, Korea is now very strong in animation subcontracting.(Even North Korea animation skill is very good.) So, they tried to make animation movies in 1980s~2000s, which costed massive money. However, they couldnt make box office hit (I guess because of story). So the investors doesnt support them because its too risky. And just as preoccupation is important, Japanese animation produced many masterpieces at that time. And now this era, a flatform called webtoon is strong in Korea. They gurantee lot of income percentage, so many went to make webtoon. Still some animators here are trying to make movie or animation series, if there is a great author who makes success and get investors come, than it can have possibility that be changed.
Last reason is, In fact, it was not cartoons and animations that raised Korea's awareness, but based on live-action images and real-life figures such as movies, dramas, and K-pop. So media doesnt have much interest in animation. Thats the reason and hope it become helps
@@user-qm5pf1em8d Maybe they should make a new rule. 1 2D animation series for each years to S.Korea. So l can believe if S.Korea are capable to make such a animation.
