I'm sure it'd have more stuff cluttering the inside if it weren't stripped out interior, still its kinda roomy in there, poor guys then get stuck into more cramped LARGER tanks, go figure...
@@Feiora Well I think a large reason for that is that bigger tanks tended to have at least 30 mm cannons on them, not twin 7.62 mm MGs, so you had to leave room for the recoil, normal man could take the recoil of the MGs, sure his shoulders would be sore but nothing would really be broken. However cannons especially the later war heavier cannons could seriously injure or even kill a man if they got hit with breach recoiling backwards so you had to leave room for that.

why do they need music when the chieftain speaks? Its just incredibly annoying... And the worst thing is...its a 4-bar phrase that repeats again and again and again....till U go crazy. Its a shame, because I love the episodes with the chieftain.

Hot damn, when you slammed that hatch down I imagined the mechanics standing outside flinching.^^ They really love these things dearly, I know how they looked at us when we were climbing on the Panzer IV and the Panther.
Like crew chiefs everywhere, it's their baby and someone else just gets to borrow it from time to time.
It's a retired machine of war, made out of armor steel, I don't think you can break the hatches and ports so easily. Running engine, perhaps.
@@Zamolxes77 Most of them were wrecks and were lovingly restored by Bundeswehr mechanics and members of the Panzermuseum Supporters Club. They are pretty protective about them.^^
He lopped off the back of the chair, pushed open the hatches, and, after getting out, slam dunked the hatch like Shaq. I died. 🤣

You guys should take a look at a little application called "sound locker". It allows you to cap the volume at a certain level and works quite nicely.

It's also a working one, so that's cool. It stands right across from their Befehlspanther, was sitting on it while filming MHV. There is a huge sign right in front of it saying "Don't touch these museum pieces". The looks of the people when they saw us on the tanks were great. xD Sadly I forgot to get into one, our drone pilot jumped into the Comet and rotated the turret...which quite surprised everyone of the staff as no one had checked ever if that was actually possible. Though I have to say seeing that 17pdr swinging in your direction is a disconcerting sight...

I remember how critical the mechanics looked at us when we were climbing around on the tanks a year ago. They are tanks, they don't break easily, but nonetheless someone definitely wasn't happy about the Chieftain slamming that hatch down hard. xD

I was not expecting the back of the driver's seat to pop off like that, pretty cool.
If my memory serves, I remember reading the Panzer I stationed in Nanking City during the siege, held off numbers of Japanese attacks, and managed to take out two Japanese tanks. And it was finally destroyed by field artillery.
Would not be surprising considering that the bulk of the Japanese armour at the time were Type 94 tankettes.
The Type 94 was basically designed to be a larger Carden-Loyd. Leaving it smaller and more lightly armed and armoured than a Panzer I.
The turret monster has little bite, unlike the era Soviet 45mm cannons.

I wonder if the viewing port being on the back of the turret is based on the idea of giving the commander a view of a direction the driver can't see in.
Yes, also it could be for observation during travel. Since the turret seem to be easy enough to swing around, maybe they would travel with the guns pointing backwards ? Another possible role could be for defense, to give the commander an option of defending the tank towards the back. Since is such a low to the ground tank, an enemy soldier could have jumped very easily on the engine deck with a satchel charge or grenades to take out the tank.

Field of view is important when driving, to observe the road and obstacles, that back vision slit seems to be very big, so it would considerable increase commander field of view to assist the driver ?
If you were just driving you'd be head out.
I imagine in a lot of combat they were head out as well, the Germans were big proponents of situational awareness.

Interesting comment about the engine air intake coming through the crew compartment. The US M60A3 had a similar arrangement, except the crew could unbolt and flip the intake covers so then the engine would draw air from outside of the tank, for cold weather or maybe chemical threat. When the tank became a giant Dutch oven in the summertime (NTC!) it was nice to have some air flowing through the turret.
Well, he got out of the tank, okay. But you get the feeling he'd soon what until a Panzer III turns up.

For those interested in such things, the Panzer I was also used to mount a 15cm field howitzer, including the carriage, for use in the mobile artillery role. Known as the sIG 33 or Bison, it was considered successful because it could deployed and withdraw much more quickly than could a towed weapon. On the other hand, it was recognised early on the the weapon was a bit too much for the little tank chassis to handle. There is video on UA-cam of one of these things being use and the recoil makes the chassis jump quite violently which, I’m sure, would have been potentially dangerous to the crew:

@@looinrims Yeah, whatever. I looked it up; the driver was seated _underneath_ the gun carriage. The whole SiG 33 gun was placed onto the PzKpfw I chassis and some thin armour plating was added. When the gun fired, the crew was normally standing in the normal position for serving an artillery howitzer. Whether or not the driver remained in his position, I don't know. What I do know is that the recoil, unsurprisingly, made the whole vehicle jump. I doubt if the driver would have been any worse off that anyone else. At least he couldn't fall out and he was well protected from the muzzle blast.

The air intakes were for removing fumes and gases from the compartment. Just like a ventilator fan. Granted, you can shut the ventilator off when it's really cold. Which is nice.

Dear Editor! Nice work on toning down the music, and also on not leaning so hard on that scene transition graphic. However, one small suggestion: when Chieftain says something like "about yea far," maybe use the footage from the camera that shows _him_ for that bit, rather than cutting away to the view of the pedal box. It doesn't help much to hear him say that if you can't see what he does with his hands. :)

The PZ I PZ II especially the in game C panzers have ever been on my favorite list. Just think they were something very interesting as with the Crusader a childhood love at Aberdeen Proving Grounds outdoor museum. Im curious as to where that 10mm shouldered bolt and lock washer to the drivers right floor went. Did the have the back support of the drivers seat wrongfully bolted in thus keeping you from a hasty evac of your flaming panzer? At any rate Thank you so very much for another tank video Sir. Spin the turrett around backwards and the visibility issues are solved. May not be the best way to charge into battle however. Thanks for this very rare look inside the Panzer I. Very cool.
Just a guess, but I think both the seat adjustment and the twin-handled tillers are so the driver can see when his direct vision hatch is closed. When it's closed, IIRC, he has only a tiny slit to see out of. Hard to see anything at all unless your face is right up close to it. So the seat slides way forward, putting his face several inches from it (must be very uncomfortable on rough terrain!). When he's driving as usual, the seat slides back for more space, and so he isn't driving with his face in the window, getting rain and dust all over him. The two handles are so he can reach the tillers either way. His arms aren't as long as yours; the Depression was really bad in Germany, and the people were small. Which is also part of why they didn't mind such cramped corners. You should try a Japanese tank next!
i've heard that the point of the engine intake from the crew compartment was for ventilation. I had read somewhere that the old landships did a similar thing because it reduced the buildup of gunsmoke inside the vehicle. one variant did away with this and then had ventilation issues. If you dont intake from the crew compartment you then need additional mechanical ventilation for the tank. Dont have any good sources to point you to unfortunately, but hopefully you'll encounter something about that in your research.

All the “landships” had serious ventilation problems.
The engine was in the middle of the crew compartment where it rattled away emitting all kinds of fumes: leaky exhausts, lubricant fumes, petrol fumes, lots of heat... engines 100 years age were rather primitive (with the possible exception of ones used by Hispano Suiza but those cars probably cost as much as a tank).
The crews were widely reported to find the temperature inside the things almost intolerable no matter the time of year. Then you have the seating arrangement - except for commander and driver in the front no-one had a seat. That’s six+ guys with motion sickness, muggy heads and splitting headaches from CO poisoning, trying hard not to vomit and sweating absolute buckets being lurched around without warning because they couldn’t see where they were going all in a metal box full of sharp steel projections that had no suspension at all - and the engine sitting there smugly waiting to burn anyone who fell against it or the exhaust.
After a very few hours in the thing crews would often stagger out and collapse from heat exhaustion, CO poisoning and if they’d been in action cordite fumes. The Whippet (was ever a tank less fittingly named) had another crew incapacitating trick up its sleeve. The two engines were in the front in their own box, but they still leaked fumes and heat into the crew compartment. And the two exhausts pointed almost directly at said compartment. Such was the pleasure of being a Whippet crew that each tank sometimes had two crews who would operate it on alternate days. This was to allow a crew a whole day to recover from what their tank had done to them.
Though maybe the German A7 was even worse - 18 to 20 crew who had all the fun the landship crews did, in a vehicle prone to falling over if it tried to drive along an incline. Such as the edge of a shell-hole.

I might be wrong, but I can’t recall tanks encountering gas. Gas wasn’t much use as a defensive weapon because if you used it too close to your own lines it affected your troops just as much as the enemy. Mustard, a particularly unpleasant and persistent compound, would be ruled out because if it settled in your trench you might as well just hand the trench over to the enemy because it’s no use to your side any more.
By the time tanks were used in effective numbers the entente wouldn’t have needed to use gas in attacks much except maybe to suppress German artillery batteries behind the lines. The tanks were far more effective, especially in their morale effect on German infantry who, despite the invention of the Tank Gewehr and K bullets, often had little to counter them with. Tanks also had the advantage that they were unlikely to cause your own side many casualties or hamper your activities.
@@tlw4237 Yes. I can't recall any mention of tanks and gas. It occurred to me though as I was reading about the hellish conditions inside these machines that ... oh ... and here's one more thing they - might - have to deal with.
One problem for the Germans using Gas - was that the winds of the world predominantly flow from west to east, so while dumping gas onto enemy trenches and rear areas might not be so bad to your own troops - who would of course be prepared for dealing with the gas - that would give you most of no-mans land as a buffer. I would also imagine that wind conditions would play a part in conducting a battle in which they were planning on using gas.
I could imagine them using gas as a defensive weapon if dumped onto enemy assembly areas and artillery - but it may not have been something they wanted to deal with when their own troops were unprepared for gas - and of course - the enemy would be dictating the moment of attack.
It would also make sense that anyone planning an attack which was going to include tanks - might not want to introduce the added complexity of dealing with gas to the, at that time, new vagaries of using tanks.

JagdPanzer IV - oh, please let it be...
The hatch on the rear of the turret makes sense especially with such a terrible commanders hatch, if somehow infantry can get behind it, they just hop on, stick some dynamite or throw a grenade in there. I can't see infantry trying to rush it head on. Alot of early tanks had rear ports for this reason as they were used for infantry support more often.

Turret ring looks like a constant headache for the driver. Surprised Chieftain didn't mention that. The entire time he was seated, I was expecting a minor traumatic encounter between turret ring and good officer's head.

And a video on ventilation systems on ww2 tanks. I read in a book which mentions British tank crews in Africa , that the temperature inside the tank would be 10 or more degrees higher than it was outside , and it mentions specifically crusader tanks

I have the impression that it seems to be quite tidey inside and quite and not so cramped. Perhaps it is because of the lack of equipment and ammo. The only thing really wrong is the interior as it couldn't be desert brown but ivory white. Please keep on posting....

Perhaps you should lug around a 4foot 10inch mannequin to put in those small spaces to demonstrate how it pays to be short in those old tanks. ;-)
I want a spaag modded for infantry fighting , soft targets and light "hard" targets and stationary targets like above ground bunkers. I would love to see how duel smooth bore gau 8s , with high velocity fin stabalized Saboted, depleted uranium tipped darts would work ...give them a needle sharp tip to have the smallest surface area possible when impacting a target so the projectiles energy is focused onto a pinpoint sized area, it should penitrate very well . plus the D.U. tip would react with any ferus alloys , making any steel hit ignite. Throw a small diameter tungsten alloy shaft into the mix and there would be a high density high mass object punching through after the d.u. reacts . if it does not react it obviously will help the dart tip punch through whatever needs punching through at 4000-6000 rpm.
Put a new turret on a modern mbt chassis,with external guns in armored shrouds , internally designed to hold the ammo feeding shoots and controls and a single gunner just to make sure malfunctions are cleared and everything is working well . also to manually operate the guns if need be. Then the driver in the chassis obviously...the rest of the space could be used for the massive ammo storage needed....seems to me that if a small glob of molten copper at 8000fps can punch through modern tank armor, 100 high density darts at around 5000fps would too. And with that value of fire , the same spots will likely be hit repeatedly thus increasing damage and the likelyness of total destruction.

@the_chieftain Considering germanys lack of experience with the tack scene of 1940 in 1935, what are the main features that they decided where keepers for future vehicles and is there any big feature they avoided in the pz 2-4 vehicles?
I believe he has a video about the development of pre-war tanks and doctrine for German vehicles on the channel that may be what you’re looking for. He also has them for the French and Italians.
The only tank we've seen so far that has enough room for its crew. We could do it today, if we could design a dependable rifle caliber machine gun with a 450 CROF and an MV > 3400mps. Child's play!

The viewslits for the driver reminds me of an medieval bacinet helmet. Kinda cool 😄 they where both top armor for warriors
I believe (tough don't know) the term Panzer comes from Turtles. In german, the shell of a turtle is called "Schildkrötenpanzer" which could be loosely translated into shield-toad-armor. A beautiful language , so melodic and fluid ;)
Chieftain: I made note that the administrators back at World of Tanks, were analyzing if sponsoring your chanel would sell memberships of/in World of Tanks. Back in the 70's and early 80s I was known of play Panzerblitz and Panzerleader. Our game counters had attack values and defence values. And I noticed that Steve Zaloga's book on the T64 included Soviet estimates of values for attack and defence between Soviet and Western tanks. The Chieftain received a defence estimate of 3.0 where as the T 62 was 1.0 How does World of Tanks does this and does your tours of tank museums includes gathering data for game designers? That would be interesting.

The more I watch these videos, the more I'm convinced I would have made a terrible tanker. I'm a big fan of tanks and armored warfare and ww2 history, but oh boy, those vehicles are too cramped, they also look like death traps, all of them. I'm a bit shorter than the Chieftain, at 6 feet, but I have bigger bulk, so it would have been terrible to escape one of these things !
I also have a fertile imagination and read several books on subject, about how to make life miserable for tanks, suffice to say the people who operated them were very brave indeed and didn't have an easy job !
My Guess is that you're not 19 years old any more either ...

2:44 I think the rear port was added after the Spanish civil war experience as the tank would have been taken out by soldiers coming from behind. That is just my theory feel free to add.
Trouble is the guy in the turret has no way to traverse himself and look backwards. Making the rear vision port unusable and useless unless the guns were pointing backwards. The two-man French tanks had a similar problem if the leather strap/“seat“ across the turret ring was in use.
These 2 man crewed 1930s tanks all seem to assume that the enemy will always be in a convenient location in front of the tank. Maybe because they thought of tanks as an armoured beast steadily rolling forwards assaulting whatever was in front of it while accompanied by adequate close infantry support, like the British heavy tanks were used in 1917/18 on the Western Front.
Could this in theory, be fitted with a 20 mm or other caliber autocannon or anti tank riffle? If so did they do it or if not why didn't they (because they were good in a trainers tank role, and the panzer II was allready there?) Edit: i know the ausf. C has an anti tank cannon but why so late in the war?
There was some consideration given to mounting the 20mm in the hull instead of fitting a turret, it was rejected in favour of the turret option.
