He was my dad's writing partner for many years and one of the best friends I ever had from the time I was eight. We were just wired alike. Neither of us liked to be tied to one type of music...he used to say...."we crossed over, didn't we" and then laugh. When I got older and got into the business we spent so much time together. He was out of the business a long time but he was a great friend. Later when he got back in the biz, we rode the country roads together and talked about virtually everything. He and Sharon came down to Florida to see me when I moved. He was not only a great writer but someone with whom it was wise to keep counsel. I was an incredibly lucky young man....I had him, Newbury and Guy Clark as north stars and advisors. They all changed my life in huge ways. There is not a day that goes by he doesn't come up in conversation. I miss my friend. Not only have we lost a great writer but a class A human being who had a regard for everyone and and always helped others. I have no doubt he is in Heaven, trying to help keep dad out of mischief but laughing at whatever shenanigans he is up to and avoiding the temptation to participate (dad was a real jokester). Read Phillip Self's book Guitar Pull and it talks about the cabin. IT was isolated and they wrote there but it didn't stop with Dallas and Doodle. Dallas was very generous and gave the key to other writers who would hole up there and write as well. He is so very missed by many of the children of the other songwriters as well. We all loved Sharon and Dallas for their ability to calm even the most volatile of situations with prayer. My wife Lisa and I ran with Dallas and Sharon for three or four years and had so much fun!

Charlie Louvin had the best cut on this. I'd say Conway, a close 2nd, IMHO.
