Custom Camper Van - How Much It Costs to Build a Camper Van - 3

  • Building a self Build camper van for the first time is not an easy challenge. It can become super expensive really fast if you don’t track your expenses. You will make some mistakes and will need to buy some of the things twice.
    Our van was designed as a mini video studio on the wheels, so having quality electricity supply was a priority, and unfortunately, it’s not cheap.
    Heating is not crucial, but it definitely makes your life onboard much more comfortable and enjoyable during winter months or just in the cold or rainy weather. If you have extra money maybe it worth investing, as once you have all walls closed - it will be more complicated to install.
    During the build process, we realize that everything costs money, especially if you want to make something a bit nicer or higher quality. We wanted to create a nice interior so we would want to spend time in the van and actually sleeping in the van feels nicer than sleeping at home, as wooden walls give you a feeling of a mountain chalet ))
    On some things we saved and on other overpaid - most probably it will happen also to you.
    We were scrupulously writing down all the expenses during the building process: from the most valuable pieces like solar panels or van itself to the smallest screws. And now it’s time to share it!
    A detailed shopping list is crucial as it will save you time. Please check the links below to our shopping list, so you can download it and use it as your checklist if you wish.
    To summarise: we would like to introduce our “money talk” video where we will basically go through all our expenses and will try to analyze where could we save a couple of bucks (Euros in our case). Enjoy the video!
    IMPORTANT:
    USEFUL SUGGESTION FOR EVERY ADVENTURER OR TRAVELER: CHECK OUT OUR INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT AS IT FEELS LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE MISSING OUT HIGH-QUALITY TRAVEL AND VAN VIDEOS FROM EXPLORATION BROTHERS ))
    .Before you put a Negative comment please make sure it’s constructive and helpful to everyone in the van community, otherwise, it will be just ignored.

    In Germany it‘s possible to change your Van to a Camper if you fulfill a few things! So for example you need a bed, a table... if you got everything then you can change it on paper and you have to pay less insurance!

      We heard that it is much easier to do this in Germany, but we would need to have German plate to be able to do that 😤

      Dear gentlemen,
      Many thanks for your courteous & hearted reply. Right now I am working on doing a whole house in timber not a vehicle yet but if my circumstances allow, I would love to indulge in doing something similar to what you'e done except I would do it with an 8 wheeled drive ex military vehicle. A bit more room you understand! Kind regards.

    Superb, really appreciate the costs breakdown. I'm in the same situation with my van, I need to work and carry out the conversion on the road, with no storage space, so I have rented a storage locker nearby to store the floor, wall panels, and bulkhead whilst I carry out the insulation process, then will use the panels as templates for new wood. I have a LWB Hightop VW Crafter 2011.

    • @ExplorationBrothers
      @ExplorationBrothers  6 років тому +1

      It is quite annoying to move back and forth all the wood and tools so you did the right thing to rent some storage space. Good luck with your build, Michael. LWB version should be over 7 meter (275 in) long so its a lot of space for everything you might need. Great choice!

    • @Memyselfandvan
      @Memyselfandvan 6 років тому +1

      Indeed, the reason for the Crafter choice was we want a fully functional toilet and shower room. A cassette toilet anyhow, with exterior removable cassette.

    Your video of your build and expenses was wonderful. I'm impressed with your attention to doing a precise and attractive build. It was nice to hear the break down of expenses also. If I get to convert a van, I may not be able to do it all at once, so this allowed me to see how I might want to work to complete it in stages, Thank you. Oh, yes, I really liked how well you cleaned the van before starting. If I built a van without cleaning and painting first, it would drive me crazy thinking what was underneath all of my hard and hopefully beautiful work.

    Hi, for heating use Propex its run on gas, comes as set incl, thermometer etc. Also install LPG tank and save 50% on your gas cost. Consider to change voltage from 12v to 24v this way you dont need to use your inverter so much as you can charge most things including large size laptops directly. Good job lads.

      We can always add a window and we were actually looking to buy one for the sliding door, but its a separate mission in Italy, but I would buy only plain glass with maximum darkness.

    Excellent! I'm planning to build a Van too! But i live in Brazil. Here everything is so much expensive. Just a Cargo Sprinter 2005 313 cost R$ 60.000,00. The conversion to Real (brazilian currency) doesn't matter, because the average wage is similar here. The hour of work of a woodworker is less of R$ 25,00, for exemple.
    Thank you for sharring all your work! Good job! See you!

    • @ExplorationBrothers

    The best video of a conversion. Am seriously contemplating doing this. Kinda worried about going it alone. I am a 58 year old single female. But I am a fairly well travelled. I have been in 40 out of 50 states and 5 countries. I want to see all the national parks in the US. This seems the best way to do this. What do you think about traveling alone and would this size be too big for me?

    • @ExplorationBrothers
      @ExplorationBrothers  4 роки тому +1

      Definitely camper van is the best way to do so!
      Usually we feel much safer parked in the mountains or national park then in the cities. Just take some safety precautions
      Remember that you will get used to any size of the van in a week time so we would recommend to go smaller (less stress driving and parking) especially if you want to explore deeper some parks with it’s dirt roads

      We didn't instal water heating in the van so its always room temperature. There was an option to connect water heating to the air heating system but it was too expensive, complicated and probably unnecessary in our case so we skipped it.

      We spoke about this subject already in some videos and comments below.
      It might get humid during winter months if you do not heat up the van while you travel. Other months it's not the case for Italy, as it's dry and hot most of the year.
      With our heater onboard - we keep it dry all the time while we are travelling. Maybe in couple of years we will open the wall and show everyone the result. Maybe consider subscribing in you are interested in the results.

    Hey guys, the van you built is AMAZING :D! The BEST i've seen since I started researching vanlife, really! I'm italian and from what I've heard the conversion from van to camper can be a pain in the ass with italian laws, but when you were talking about insurance costs you said that you pay insurance for a COMMERCIAL VAN, so you didn't even attempted to register the van as a camper? Isn't it necessary? I've heard that once you make permanent changes to the van (like screwing wood to the structure) you HAVE to change the national registration from commercial van to camper or you would be traveling in an "illegal" vehicle. Can you explain? Thanks!
    Adriano

    • @ExplorationBrothers
      @ExplorationBrothers  5 років тому +1

      Ciao Adriano,
      We didn’t dip into this subject too much, but yes, it’s much better to change registration to save some money and avoid unnecessary discussions with police (in the with case senario they can even take your libretto).
      We are planing to do all this process in the future so we will look deeper into regulations in different European countries

    mmm, I guess it's easier to find parking space with a van though...

    • @ExplorationBrothers
      @ExplorationBrothers  5 років тому

      Italy is not ideal for campers)))
      Regarding parking - it depends on your style of travelling. If you don't want to be parked in the centre of the city and have a bicycle, then you can easily take 650cm camper, but we prefer invisible style of the van over the classic camper look.

      @@ExplorationBrothers il punto e' che col camper non posso parcheggiare ovunque in citta, mentre col furgone posso parcheggiare ovunque perche' nessuno sa che ci sta della gente dentro. L'assicurazione puo' costare di piu' ma se ci vivo un anno, mi conviene usare un furgone transformato in camper. Voi che ne pensate? Io voglio viaggiare per l'Europa ad un prezzo accessibile....

    • @ExplorationBrothers
      @ExplorationBrothers  5 років тому

      Avevamo la stessa idea e infatti più che altro molto più pratico a parcheggiare, pero magari per la città sarebbe ancora più comodo il modello da 550cm, che 600cm a volte complicato.
      Se fai viaggi per la maggior parte nella natura per tempi lunghi - potresti prendere anche un camper normale usato.
      Non mi piacciono quelli della fabbrica perché c'e poco spazio dentro.

    Well done with all the costings etc.
    One question - is it actually worth insulating the van?
    If it costs (say) €2000 Eur with your time and materials and it adds weight (200Kg???) (fuel consumption) then whats the calculation if you dont do any of that and instead have an increased propane/diesel heater so you can just heat the van instead?
    Assuming you put in some kind of heater anyway, just using it more often and also if you actually stay in the van overnight for say, 100 nights a year?
    A Webasto heater is around 0.08l per hour apparently, so 1litre per night = €1.40 per night. Or €140 per year extra cost if uninsulated ? Thats a long time (15 years?) to recover the cost of insulation otherwise?

    • @ExplorationBrothers
      @ExplorationBrothers  6 років тому +1

      Insulation is not weighing much. Maybe 30 kg maximum and price was about 200 euro for whole thing. Wood panels are more decorational purpose, but obviously also it's a good insolation material.
      Heater + heater installation is very expensive (about 1600 euro in our case).
      Remember that insulation is great not only for cold months, but also for summer months and it keeps the temperature inside.
      I think it worth adding some insulation.

    I have 2 questions
    why do you choose 600 watt the inverter , had good quality solar panels and batteries but 600 watt inverter is that enough?
    why you did not choose the quick usb output around the living space due to traditional 220v output -of course you'll need the 220 but the usb output smart and cool way -

    • @ExplorationBrothers
      @ExplorationBrothers  6 років тому +1

      Sure. We will install 12 volts output for charging iphone and ipad or any other small things and will use inverter only for charging computer or using a blender.
      I think 600W is not enough as sometimes we would like to use something more powerful. 1000W is minimum I would take, but then it depends on what you want to use.
      The bigger the inverter - the more it consumes in standby mode even if nothing is connected.
      Our 600W consumes 0.7A every hour or about 15A a day, just to be on all the time, so we will also install a switch for this one.

      Fix costs are: insurance (it depends from country to country) 50 to 100 euro per month.
      Taxes: depends how old is your van, how big is the engine and where are you resident. In Italy everything from 70 to 150 euro per year
      Fuel: depends how many kilometers you are going to drive
      Electricity is free (solar panels and alternator are doing their job)
      There are some food expenses as well
      So basically if you are staying in one place somewhere in Italy, your cost of living can be really low
