You're a lifesaver. This is exactly what I wanted to do. Thanks for giving so many comparison types. Your choice of gold+ mettalic red + matt clear coat looks amazing
I just did a Red Hood helmet and for the black lines i thinned out the paint till it was runny and used a syringe to apply it. It ran down through the lines beautifully. Gravity baby!
I ordered some Duck Brand non-adhesive shelf liners from Amazon and used them on the center section of my helmet. If you use that with your second coat of clear you can simulate a carbon fiber weave when the light hits it the right way.
dudeeeeeee!!!, you really safe me, i bought a hulkbuster and i looking for a video that help me so how give it this finish and when i almost gave up i found this!
Question for you. I 3d printed a pokeball . I sand it down also did wet sand . Came out smooth. I hand painted with acrylic paint and it was still looking good. When I put the clear coat spray on it, tho it looks weird. It's not as smooth and looks like gunk I don't know how to describe it but it's not shiny like your helmet
not sanded at all does not work with FDM... you will see the print lines. This is why people sand the model... it looks crispy. sure you can prime the heck out of it and get rid of the lines, but it will look bulky and uneven. give it a try and you will see pretty quickly that sanding for 15 minutes makes a huge difference.
Ment to ask this in the previous video. I let my primer/ filler dry for a day, sanded, and washed. When I wash is a lot of the primer comes off. How long should I let it dry before washing? Some what new to this but your videos are very informative
Great advice, staying in the same family of paints. Gold base and matte clear turned out awesome. I think I’m going to use that with the custom Mando armor I’m doing for someone 😉. Thanks for the idea and as always, awesome job!
that gold made it beautiful! I wouldn't have thought that could do that effect. very cool! would you suggest to do spray painting for small and tiny prints too?
So I’m a few years late to this party but thanks for doing an entire series on red hood. I just finished printing mine today. I do have one question though. How long did you wait between the last coat of gold and the first coat of red paint?
You have a a rustoleum gold on the thumbnail, but used a different paint. I have the gold as a base and the anodized red on my iron man helmet. I haven’t used the red yet tho
I would test like a black car paint with some fleck in it and the use a matt spray to see how that looks. And or test a high gloss black with a matt spray. I've never tried that, would like to see how it looks.
wow! the rendering is absolutely incredible! Unfortunately I have looked everywhere for these paints and varnishes in Europe but they are nowhere to be found and not available for shipment. Does anyone know of an equivalent for France, the UK or Germany?
This is really amazing!! I want to replicate this, You mentioned using a matte instead of glossy to finish it off. What brand or type of matte finish did you use. I only see a link to the high gloss one in your description.
QUESTION: Do you think it's possible to layer the metalcast purple and red to make a burgundy? I'm looking to re-create the color of the Washington Commanders helmets.
Amazing Video Series!!!! Used this to paint my Darth Revan helmet & made a project out of it with my girlfriend! Thanks so much for going through all the steps & explaining everything! Can't wait for Halloween! I think this might end up becoming a hobby of mine!
I'm completely new to working 3D printing props, and advice to brand new newbie? The first print I'm planning is for Raine Whispers of The Owl House, their violin. I know it's bit of a bigger build and I probably should start smaller, but there's nothing smaller I really plan right now, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!! (Also really want to have the red hood helmet, so if my first build goes well I'm doing that next!!)
Firstly, incredible! but im wondering, would it not have been more beneficial to do the acrylic black or any other cutting in work before you put the clear matte on the mask? or would this not work with the acrylic?
why dont you use iwata compressor and airbrush for details? I would like to find primer, metalic paint in cyprus but unfortunately its difficult here...
I'm trying to paint a Daredevil helmet and I'm sort of new to sanding, priming, and painting 3D prints. I want to give it like a matte red look for my helmet. Are there any techniques I could use that you recommend?
hi , i love your video's , they help me so much! i am making a captain amarica shield , i still haven't chosen what colors i want to use , because i don't want to copy the flag. any suggestions ?
Question when I paint I use rustoleum and......I'll prime....then dry.... then fill....then paint..and I tried painting again once...waiting alloted time and it cracked and everything either I'm doing it wrong or? I'm unsure...my prints...even after drying seem tacky...and I use the paint that has both paint and primer in it sadly...im not sure...any tips?
I would make sure the temperature falls within the painting instructions, wear gloves to ensure no oils get onto the print and affect the paint and just keep the area clean. Cold and or high humidity can really screw up a paint job.
Firstly, thank you for creating such easy to follow and thorough videos! I just finished watching the previous lesson, and was curious if I can use acrylic paint over the 2 in 1 primer? If so, should i let the primer cure for a much longer period of time, or can I just let it dry, wet sand, then wash, then paint?
Amazing work and both videos are super clear at demonstration of techniques and tools! How many hours of work would you estimate this entire process from sanding to final product took?
@@3DPrintedProps am I mistaken if I say that with a little practice one can prime and sand this helmet for one hour and still get good results? Especially if the helmet does not have a lot of details and sharp corners, like the one you did on this video? let us know... great video.
To fix runs for the Metal Cast Paint do you wait for it to cure? I have been doing super light coats 10 minutes apart and it still has some runs that I cant prevent.

Wish I could see what you see in the paint job with different base coats, none of them look metallic to me. I just chalk it up to cameras and screens don't always show true color.
Thank you for all of your videos ! Best tutorials we can find here, keep the good job man. Also : Is it possible to restart the paint after it dried and been varnished ? My Golden spray paint was not a good one and it ended up reacting with the varnish even 2weeks after it dried... I would wait 24 hours. Maybe longer if u live in an area that's cold or has high humidity. I've screwed more than more project up taping to fast
Using the gold and red however I found a slightly different gold and love it
I love the matte. I didn't think I would, but I was wrong. It's awesome

A black oil wash works really well for pin washing the “valleys” in the Red Hood Helm.
Cool, I'll have to try that. It sounds interesting.
that paint job is stunning!

The finish looks more like a satin, I love the look so far on to the next video.

You bet! Thanks 😀
Great video! I want to ask why, why did you put the finish before paintbrushing the black lines instead of doing the lines and then finish?
Will this technique and materials work on 3d printed plastic or just resin?
Hello, this is a standard PLA print, not a resin print. So yep, this will work and it will also work on resin prints.
Is it possible to apply a layer of clear resin over the clear coat to protect the paint?

would the weather effect any of the painting process? gets cold here in Ontario
Yes, Paints and clear coats have a temp range. I have a heck of a time here in NY. Its 10 degrees out right now and I have no place to paint.
Do you wet sand at all between the gold and red coats?
Hello, Nope.
