Why did they go into the rapid at that point? Why not on the left where it is safe.. Why would you EVER take a rapid on the shore side where there are rocks and trees sticking out?

Did they just bring their own raft? No experience river guide would have that happen.
You are required to bring your own raft. The owner of the raft must be one of the paddlers, no rentals or borrowed craft are allowed. Additionally, commercially guided trips are prohibited. This was just a poor line, glad it worked out ultimately.

wait what approach you're talking about the one before the rapid or the one where the lady is pinned between rock and kayak because if so there wasn't another way to unpin her rather than just pull her
