I think that was absolutely right. I tried to lead them to the archer line and charged them. When the infantry line got confused where to go I dismounted them and they chomped through the stragglers while the rest of the forces were confused on the shield wall. I know they could have done just as well on the horse but they take alot of pressure off the shield wall if they aren't running around trying to do their cycle charge thing

But simply surviving a battle has MAJOR ramifications. I know when I played as Vlandia, it stung whenever I saw Banner Knight die during a seige, and it happened often. They're just not suited for ground combat.
Then I played a campaign as Sturgia. I rarely lost a single Druz champion. Economically, the Druz take the W if you often siege a castle.

The only two changes I would make too the Sturgia would be; A) make the druzhinik champion a foot soldier and/or have the troop tree split into Sturgian Huscarls (redistribution of skills into 2 handed, 1 handed and athletics) also the Huscarl would require 2 handed axe or possibly a poleaxe. The druzhinik champions (less athletics more riding) B) Have the Sturgian Veteran Bowman given a longbow. From a lore perspective it makes more sense since to hunt large game (mammals in cold climate are typically large) you would need a bow that could bring down large elk/moose

I very much feel like they should split the noble lines in two like they have done for the elite infantry. The earlier parts of the noble line are nords, Varyag being the Rus name for Viking. You should have the option of going for even stronger nord style infantry and actually have huscarls, or to go for the heavy cavalry in the Druznik (which to my understanding is the Rus name for companion which were the elite bodyguard unit of the warlord/ruler in the Kievan Rus empire).

I feel like if the T5 bowman were any better though that Sturgia would just romplestomp.
I tend to try and use them as close range fire support that can be put on hold fire/charge to assist the frontline. Since much of Sturgian infantry has throwable ranged options if they were any better there would be so much ranged shield pressure that it would trivialize the sturgian niche of a slow shielded aggressive advance and favor a passive shielded turtle play style that’s boring.

How do you place the Brigands in their own unit? I'm fairly sure the game does not allow you to place specific units of the same class in specific groups. Which is funny for a game that has the majority of its mechanics focussed on the specific strengths of specific units. But if there like the video says is a way to do it, I'd really love to learn it!

  • @YuriiTemnikov
    @YuriiTemnikov 8 місяців тому +1

An interesting moment - the sturgian heroic line breaker in close combat (I launched random battles with 100/150 units on each side) usually defeats the Fian champions, who are essentially a fusion of top archers and top shock troops.
But a heroic line breaker in melee will usually defeat them, even though they are not elite troops.
But the sturgian horse raider is an absolute counter unit against the Fian champions. Even if the Fians are shooting. Especially if the Fians are shooting.
In a random battle, the same fians (like herioc line breakers) simply destroy the top units of the game - elite cataphracts.
But against the raiders - no chance. Raiders (I think, like any mounted skirmisher with a shield) are literally their bane.
Due to the fact that the skirmishers first prefer to circle around the crowd and throw spears at it, they avoid getting bogged down in the crowd, where the Fians would quickly kill them.
Raiders' shields almost always protect them from stray arrows while they are throwing their javelin. And these javelins simply mow down the Fians - the remaining ones are simply finished off, because there is no longer a crowd and the horsemen do not get stuck in it, and the AI for the spear on horseback works better than that of the infantry, so the Fians are extremely rarely able to hit the horsemen when they attack .

I agree an infantry noble would be awesome. Or increase athletics, lower riding, replace the coachable lance and shield with a two handed and one handed polearm (maul and axe?) and add throwing for a unique "mobile infantry" unit that fits well with the rest of the roster.
I think Sturgians could use a crossbowman instead of archer, then one stack of bolts is enough and with a shield and one-handed they could be the worst ranged unit but make up with being a decent infantry.
Overall I think the best distinctiveness of the armies could be having Empire and Sturgia have lots of armor, but Sturgia with more athletics (+30 across the board) not be as slow. Battania could have weaker armor but also have high athletics, making them squishy but the fastest. With Vlandia average athletics and armor I'd have Khuzait and Aserai lower on athletics, a trade-off with higher riding, throwing or other skill.

  • @LyonExodus

Hey Spartacus i need to correct you on the "multiple templates" mechanic because it doesn't work randomly.
When a unit is generated it is usually given 1 template (generally template 1), then any unit after that one will receive "the next" template in sequential order. Once all templates have been given out it will repeat.
So, out of 100 units with 2 templates there will always be a 50/50 split, no randomness.
And out of 100 units with 3 templates there will always be a 34/33/33 Split.
Just one thing to consider going forward. if you want to see it for yourself just load up some custom battles and count the units.

If the developers intend for the sturgian nobels to dismount, that feels super engaging, unique and thematically consistent to me. The thing I like about the Druzhinnik Champion is that it will still beat up most low-mid tier units(including enemy cav), while also being an actual asset in sieges, rather than a liability. If an enemy gets hit by a couched lance, it is dead, no matter if the cavalry has 170 polearm or 260 polearm.
Other Noble Cavalry will win the cavalry duel, sure, but that is why you have your heavy infantry anyway. Both Heroic Linebreakers and Heavy Spearmen will eat Banner Knight and Cataphracts for breakfast.
Also, in terms of cavalry duels, I would say that the Khuzait noble line wins anyway, because they will kill off the riders/horses before the opponent can get close enough to deal good damage.
The Druzhinnik Champion will still hammer down enemy infantry and distrupt enemy formations, and will be able to keep up in sieges. If it was a pure infantry line, it would actively compete with both your Heavy Spearmen, Heavy Axemen and Heroic Linebreakers.

You aren't wrong, but something about the way the new AI works, the swords seem to work a lot better because the AI doesn't PUSH into each other like it did before - they maintain a line of battle. In a lot of my testing, axes seem to expose themselves while maces - still exposing themselves - get more damage on target (that's my assumption based off the fact that maces seem to result in more kills). the swords keep the infantry relatively "in line" whenever i do custom battle testing

The weak bows of the Sturgs were sacrificed for balance - in fact, the Slavs had powerful composite bows, which were not inferior in power to the composite eastern bows.
Maybe even more powerful - there is an old Russian measure of length "perestrel" - about 225 meters. Indicates the length of an aimed shot from a bow. That is, this was the average shot distance.
Therefore, if you give the Sturgs powerful bows with a claim to historicity, the balance will simply go to hell.
But, in fact, even such a bow is enough for Sturges to cause trouble for anyone, and thanks to their good armor, one of the best of all archers, they are quite tenacious.

The Champions are so odd. I was running an army with fians and banner knights only and was getting to the point in the game where I couldn't replace my lost banner knights. I bolster my lost cavalry with the Champions. Sometime later I notice my banner knights and other cavalry units dying off but the only unit refusing to die are the Champions! They might not be as great as the banner knights, but they have the survivability factor which makes them really good. Their ability to convert into infantry when dismounted is an added bonus.

The Druzhniik is definitely mobile infantry here's part of the problem they have no throwing axes and a high throwing skill it's just wasted. I agree on what you commented on make them a more powerful infantry force and also give them throwing axes then they would make more sense as a combative force.

Good approach comparing each to their competition, nice guide. I'd probably discuss tier 2&3 and 4&5 at the same time and consider you having a 50-50 mix, or judge an entire line and compare 20 20 30 30 mixes.
Or reverse the evaluation and instead advice your all-stars composition. A low tier would mean you'd go out of your way to recruit similar troops elsewhere and high tier would mean an army staple.
An added advantage of this approach would be you can advise new players what to do with shield and shock troops, and how to decide to get more or less cav and ranged.
You can then have these videos on a mostly Sturgian, Battanian, etc armies. Then you can have friendly UA-camrs shoot at them, evaluating the weak and good points and adding their opinions. The algorithm might love that! 😉
A minor tip, it possible to put the total or average armor on each unit, or does that take a lot of time to edit in?

The mod that gives mercenary berserker at the tavern, allows you to make huskarls as a alternate pattern to druzniksand allows the skirmisher brigands to path off to an alternative tier 5 light infantry is AWESOME! I forget the name but it adds them for all races. It also adds niche female units and some pretty cool mercs.
It also adds a "north guard" merc unit, which is modeled after the varangian guard but wears imperial gear as a sturgian unit

For auto battles or simulated battles (battles done without entering the combat map, aka the send troops command) the Empire for sure. Sturgia is second from the new update. Aserai being third as of the new update.
For player battles, or battles that you enter the combat map; the Khuzaits. For infantry only Battanians.

you keep talking about taking specific units out of formation, how do you do that these days, I know you used to just set them a group in the party screen but coming back I noticed you can't do that any more, so it forces me to split based on the unit type (infantry, archers, etc) and can't separate the individual types.

    • @italianspartacus
      @italianspartacus  Рік тому +2

split by the type, then prioritize :) So you'd want say... infantry 1 to be heavy armor and shield and then infantry 2 (lets say it's formation V) to be throwing weapons. press the little + icon and you can prioritize!@

    • @zodrickzheioh7318
      @zodrickzheioh7318 Рік тому

@@italianspartacus ah, fair enough, so it's still not super granular, so I couldn't put my Throwers with my archers by classing them in the same group, Just modify the percentages by leaning one group preferentially towards a specific type. So if I want my Wood Runners with my archers they need to be a hybrid archer infantry group with a preference for throwing weapons? but that still means that my Warriors who also have throwing axes are potentially going to get in there XD, honestly preferred the granularity of the old system. Thanks a bunch though!

They made Veteran bowman just so fail compared too the rest. I would be willing too give up a quiver of arrows in ex change a shield. Let them join the shield wall after they exhaust there ammo. When you have crossbow troops mixed with regular bowman and put them in shield wall. The crossbow troops will put there shield up while the back lines of archers still fire. That style and uniqueness would make the veteran bowman viable.

  • @albertogarciadelacruzbarre8350

Talking about the brigands it has to be said that the horse armor is shit and that make them vulnerable in the battlefield. Also they only have 1 stack of throwing weapons so they gonna be out of ammo pretty soon, having to go melee and then dying because the horse is really weak, and their melee weapons are not so great.

ITS "DRU - ZHIN (more like J-sound, like in voyaGe , not z) - NICK" not druznick
    Drough-Jeanne-Nick
it's from Russian midlle age history, means a member of the inner circle (friends, far relatives) of a noble
FYI the lore here is a direct parallel to Kievan Rus' (midage Russia) which was mainly fighting The Golden Horde (Khuzait), and Livon order (Vlandia, sort of). And it was (as in the game also) really hard to predict- who will your next battle be with - mounted archers and light cavalry of the Horde, or heavy armored knights of the crusaders. So the logic here is to have something which will be suitable against both. The game actually translates real historical circumstances and material response really smart. Unfortunately suffering from the balancing necessity. Also mechanics of the game tend to equalize army sizes, whereas in real history some peoples took V by sheer numbers and overwhelming hit-and-run tactics (Horde-Khuzait, Mamluke-Arab), while others had technical superiority.

My favorite army comp these days is a core of Sturgian Heavy Spearmen for a strong shield line backed by Imp Menavs and Battanian Fians and Wildlings, plus a smattering of cavalry for me to toodle around with personally. I could do better if I diversified and micro'd more, but keeping it simple is much easier on my smooth brain. Those Sturgian shield walls are so damn strong.
The only thing holding Sturgia back at this point is deployment; they have enough strong- or best-in-class units to contend with any other nation on the battlefield, and the emphasis on infantry makes them considerably cheaper and more convenient to field. The sticking point is that the Sturgian territory just hamstrings the poor stupid AI too harshly. The Revyl peninsula seems to be a trap for AI parties, and the constant snow makes everything so much worse.

Nice video. One nitpicky thing from my side: Calling Druzhinnik *DruZnick* Ah, pain in my ears :) It should be more like Droo + jin + nick (there is double *n* and *zh* is more like *j* without *d* part).
As for the unit itself. Gameplaywise i agree with you but for RP it makes sense to have them mounted. Because judging by name itself Devs definitely took inspiration of Sturgia in Kyivan Rus (on which vikings and Byzantium were big influences).

I love Sturgia culture wise, but they are garbage in this game. I pretty much go ahead and accept that their homeland is going to be divided between the Khuzaits and Vlandians within 3 years of game time. They just don't have time to train up their troops passed the soldier tier and woodsman tier. It's such a shame too, because I'm a huge simp for the Norse culture. But I'm also tired of wasting my playthroughs trying to keep them alive as a faction.
Also the Devs have a hard on for the Khuzaits for w/e reason, even if you play as them on the hardest difficulty you will never lose. If you lose as a Khuzait, you really suck ass. It's the noob faction.
