    About the jawaal, their best unit is actually their recruit. 250 athletics and little to no armor means that they can chase down some horsemen. They're surprisingly good against horse archers where they can subdue the horse with a javelin and then race down the unhorsed archer. But against other factions with heavier armor they need a numbers advantage to win and right now they don't come in high enough numbers to be a significant threat. Still bad but they are a fun minor faction if you want a challenge.

    Crossbows may not have as much damage as an archer but the fact that dudes got good armor a good shield and a good sword compared to archers means when the inevitable fighting starts they can hold their own

    • @Palabrota
      @Palabrota 4 роки тому

      Agreed. This balancing becomes more important as you do more sieges and fewer field battles (or as field battles stop being a challenge). If you have a good number of high-level ranged units in a siege (xbow OR archer), they will usually clear the walls of militia archers before the hand-to-hand phase. If you're short on heavy infantry and dismounted cav, your xbowmen can go in with that wave and have a better K:D ratio than a comparable archer.

    • @kodykayos7630
      @kodykayos7630 4 роки тому

      @@Palabrota exactly. And honestly. The xbowmen seems to do some serious work both as ranged units and melee units. I typically have a very small front line of heavy infanty and loads of cav and xbows because when melee starts the xbowmen can join the fight with their armor and sheilds

    • @MonteKowalsky
      @MonteKowalsky 4 роки тому

      This has been my experience since at least 1.3. They do lower DPS, sure, but with the better armor and shields, they can hold their own against cavalry charges, especially against heavy cav as the crossbows seems significantly more lethal against armor.
      If you’re able to micro manage them, ordering them to hold fire until mounted units get into medium/short range, the one to two volleys they get out are savage. Plus any dismounted riders that somersault into their line can’t do much when outnumbered by medium shielded infantry.

    • @421less1

  • @hereiam2005
    @hereiam2005 4 роки тому +27

    I like your videos, but you should take into account the weapon load out of the troops when comparing them too.
    The game is very sneaky when it comes to troop equipment since they only show their skills in the encyclopedia.
    For example, the Khan's guards, despite the high stats, are armed only with the Steppe Recurve Bow with 62 damage, while the Aserai Mamelukes, despite being a tier 5 cavalry archer, come equipped with the far superior Noble Bow with 80 damage on far more heavily armored and faster warhorses.
    Likewise the reason Fian Champions are so overpowered is because they are the only troop in the game armed with Noble Longbow with 98 damage, compared to most other ranged troops (including the Aboreal) which are armed with the (relatively) weak Steppe Recurve Bow.
    And that's just the weapon, their armor loadouts are also drastically different, and for cavalry, their steeds and armor should be considered too.
    This game is way way more complicated than it is showing the players.

    • @italianspartacus
      @italianspartacus  4 роки тому +17

      I totally see where you're coming from and I absolutely agree with you. Using your Khans Guard example - they have superior armor and Glaives, outclassing the mamelukes (in my experience. Further, with the Fian - you're right, BUT the Fian also gets almost 100 bow skill more than the best non noble line archer, so he'll get a further damage increase (passively of course) to a bow, as well as firing rate.
      You definitely brought up a lot of good examples and I should absolutely try to drill down on those more BUT I am afraid that some load outs might be unintentional, bugged, or waiting for a balance.. So I try to keep my information pointed, but relatively general so that it remains true to what I feel is the representation of the unit in the game vs. Noble bows vs. Non noble (which is still a HUGE point of contention, so thank you for bringing that up). Just wanted to explain my reasoning so you didn't think I was glossing over stuff!! :)

      The previous levels of Khuzait noble and the Kharakhuzait mostly have two stacks so, they live un-babysat (F6) by the player for much longer.

    I tend to train crossbows like the boars/empire and deposit them as garrison troops. I find that they perform really well in sieges due to their armour, and armaments and because they duck behind ramparts to reload. I always tend to have archers on the field battles, more mobility, more firepower.
    I'd like to see crossbows get a bit of love. Maybe in the form of the Bolts having really high armour piercing and have additional Bolt types like we see with Arrows. I definitely think xbows with really high pierce would fit logically. Slow to fire but pack a solid punch.

      They need to make bows much worse at penetrating armor to incentivize using crossbow men against heavily armored units. I would like the armor to be realistic in the sense that weapons either do damage through it or they don’t do damage at all rather than armor just being a damage reduction. In some warband mods, they made the armor so realistic that you could actually run into a crowd of 50 looters with all of them attacking you and take no damage at all. It was awesome. They even had a custom sound effect for weapons “dinging” off the armor.

    I found that mixing Crossbows with high per-shot damage with Champion Fians for range and high per-shot damage and better RoF then crossbows with Imperial Bucellarii who have great armor and a high RoF makes for an archer section in your army that can kill an opponent army of about 400 to 500 for 95%, with a spread of 40/40/40 on your own archers section.

    Since they can join bigger factions, and their clan become part of said faction's power, it would make sense for these minor clans to become a part of the politics, influence and relations as well.
    They recruit their own special units, so once they got a thief, it means you'd be able to recruit them in their clan capital as long as your relation with them is high enough (like how you have to improve your relation with a lord to unlock recruitement slots in it's properties).

    Triarii tend to spawn without javelins as intended.
    Italian Spartacus (or anyone seemingly interested in Roman warfare) should know this. As it's a reflection of the actual old Roman Republic troops. Hastati and Principes used pila, but the Triarii were spear and shield troops, sans pila.
    Hence the flavour in the game too.

    The legion of thee betrayed units are actually named after Roman Legion units, although if memory serves principes(pronounced princheepaes) should be the most advanced. Triarii were Rome's version of heavy spear infantry. The hastati were mid to late Roman light infantry(they couldn't afford more) and were armed with the staple Roman legion shield with a gladius and a spear.

    • @italianspartacus
      @italianspartacus  3 роки тому +1

      Hastati had to provide their own armament and typically included light armor of a bronze chest shield. Principes (the C as a S sound is classic Latin vs. Church Latin which does C as a CH sound) were sons of the aristocracy or wealthier, more veteran soldiers.. Then there's the triarii, they did in fact use spears, they had the heaviest armor, but were the oldest veterans. It's where the term, "its down to the triarii" comes from - they anchored the line! :)

    Unit stat balancing is still weird. Like, why does a unit of archers from a minor clan have a better crossbow skill than the best crossbowmen you can get from the recruit line, in spite of not being able to use crossbows?
    I also feel like they really need to change the crossbowmens overall behavior so they can make some use of their shields. They could either have them deploy those shields like a historical pavese and basically use them like merlons, or they could keep them on the back but have the crossbowmen turn around when reloading, so that their shield faces the enemy.

If my info is correct about autoresolve (?), then efelftheroi units are one of the best for auto-resolve. Sometimes I purposefully watch as an ally army gets defeated just to scoop up their troops from the battered enemy force. This also has the added benefit that one of the major nobles will be in custody so he can't make another army to divide the kingdoms force even more.

The triari are also good, ghulams and faris are ok ish, but the rest are just frankly trash. they need to balance those a bit, since like the oath keeper are even with decent stats not great, unless they go the berserker style of fighting.
