I love Everybody lyrics. I think they speak to me as an adult on her late 30s who likes to be childish and SHINee is really the place where I feel forever young. The chorus is repetitive but I don't think the rest of the lyrics are a typical love song, they give me more of a uplifting vibe that I appreciate so much. Sometimes the people might have hard time accepting new sounds and genres. But SHINee never shy away from the unknown territory. Some people might thought SHINee way too ahead of their time too. But those things make SHINee special to us. We’re so lucky that they still bringing something new to the music scene to date, never bored of their variety of music they have for us. 5HINee forever.
"Why So Serious?" came out in 2013, and right before SHINee were to start promotions for the song, Jonghyun was in a car accident and he broke his nose. His face was all bruised up. So SM decided it would be better for him to take some time to heal. But instead of postponing their promotion schedule, including the already planned MV shoot -- which would have cost them a lot of money to do so, among other things -- SM decided to shoot the MV with only 4 members. So, in the MV Taemin covers Jonghyun's parts, including his lines in the song -- just like Taemin now covers most of the parts that probably would have been Jonghyun's in all of their new songs, such as the main high notes. (Taemin is the main vocalist in this MV and the first one you see and hear with the brassy orange/blond hair. Key is the one with the bright bleach blond hair.) Jonghyun was Taemin's vocal coach and he helped teach Taemin how to sing, so Taemin's voice matches Jonghyun's voice the most out of all the members, that is why he is the one to take over the majority of Jonghyun's parts in SHINee's songs. However, if you listen to the studio recording from their album, you will hear that Jonghyun is part of the official track. It was a few weeks into their promotions before Jonghyun was back to promoting this song, but if you watch one of their last weeks of their live comeback performances or any of their concert performances of this song you will get to see him in the song. You really should check out a live performance because you will discover that the song is even better with all 5 of their voices. He thinks all that commotion he heard was coming from one little girl listening to a CD. Little did he know that she was having a full on dance party with a group of cute zombie boys right before that. I can't emphasize enough that SHINee will NEVER BE THE SAME in any of their songs and it will ALWAYS be different than anything you have ever heard from them, and probably unlike anything you have ever heard from anyone in Kpop before SHINee did it. That's what their group's concept is all about. They are supposed to be an experimental group that is constantly coming out with something new that has never been seen or heard before. They are the ones that will introduce the style to the Kpop industry. They never follow trends only start them.
I love SHINee sooo much and I’m so incredibly happy to see you reacting to them and their music. From what you’re saying, I would suggest reacting to the group NCT sometime in the future as they tend to have quite experimental songs with a lot of “noise” and unpredictable twists and turns (in the best way possible) which I think you’d really like. They’re under the same label as SHINee (SM Entertainment) and currently have 23 members who are all really hard-working and talented. The production on their music is out of this world and their vocals and rap will literally blow you away. Each member has a very unique/distinct sound and style to their singing/rapping. In fact, I first learned their names based on their voices, rather than their appearances. Their concept of unlimited members and separate units is also quite unique and interesting to dive into.
In "Everybody" SHINee are supposed to be toy soldiers and they get their energy and power from the fans. So in the MV the "creepy" boy or robot, or whatever you want to call him is supposed to represent the fans who are using their energy to power the SHINee members up. The boy plugs in the power which sends the electricity to the grid on the floor where the members are laying and it activates Key, which then sets off a chain reaction that proceeds to activate the rest of the members. The fans power SHINee up with their energy and that's why in the beginning they wake up from the floor and in the end they run out of energy and they disengage and fall back down to the floor to wait for the fans to come and power them back up again. All the moves and everything you see, including the way they are dressed, is supposed to remind you of how a toy soldier would look and move. At one point you see Minho gives the members an energy boost by pulling Key's pull string, winding Jonghyun's windup key, using a defibrillator to jumpstart Taemin and activating Onew by turning him on with a remote control. In the middle of the performance, where they come together and create that picture in their dance, they are supposed to look like an airplane, that's why Onew spins his arms round really fast like the propeller of a plane. The plane has to do with the fact that they are soldiers and they are depicting a scene from a battle during the Korean War. And the chess board is showing how they are soldiers engaged in battle as they advance across the chess board. It's a metaphor for how life is full of a series of moves and countermoves. Similar to the scene in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets where Harry, Ron and Hermione have to play the lifesize wizards chess game to get to the Chamber of Secrets. Yet again, SHINee are trendsetters, Dubstep was a new style of music and sound when "Everybody" came out in 2013, and they introduced the genera to the Kpop industry. And combining that with popping, locking and robotics as part of the choreography was also new. And yes, 4 out of the 5 of them have major high notes in "Everybody." With SHINee SM tried soooo many things for the title tracks, thats why they sound all so different and are not limited to one genre. They are always so SHINee because of their amazing vocals and their harmonies. There is a famous performance of Why so Serious?, where they had to do it at a festival in the middle of a taifun hitting the area ! ! !
Just wanted to appreciate your efforts to include the Japanese releases! It's very rare and so refreshing to see. The Japanese discography is definitely different to that of Korean, and it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's probably my personal favorite. I especially love the B sides and the amazing ballads. Taemin also has many amazing Japanese tracks. One thing for sure, the best of Japanese songs still awaits. I know Why So Serious isn’t everyone’s favorite but I adore that era (just wish Jonghyun was there) and it’s really special to me. It was the first full song I heard of theirs and what made me a Shawol. I come from a rock/alternative background so the heavy guitar and punk inspired outfits hooked me immediately!
