It’s becoming like Sao Paolo city, the crime is so rampant there many stores have double doors and no one can go in or out without security personnel opening and they check your bags before exiting.
Having lived in California in the 1990s, I am absolutely not surprised it has come to this. I suspect this "cattle fence" is the initial action and the store will close in the near future.
And then have everyone complain about the inconvenience, extra cost, and the time it takes to shop? NOT! No. Better to get out and let the neighborhoods responsible for the lawlessness languish and disappear.
The lady says it all ...."if I can bring my kids and shop safely IT"S WORTH IT."...this is what's become of our sick society; the good people have to suffer for the thugs and gang-bangers.
Reminds me of DC in the 80s when I first encountered a KFC that had the swivel counter to pay, and receive our food, and open until 5pm. Brutal, what lengths businesses will do to cut down on theft, and robbery.
I really do not recognize this world anymore. It's pathetic how law enforcement has been hobbled and cannot do their jobs and the despicable court system that literally has a revolving door for the criminals.
Some other ways to curtail theft is to tell people to leave their coats and jackets in their vehicles. Plus have customers carry smaller purses. And absolutely no back packs or other large bags.
I think businesses and communities like that should just close down and make families have to travel for miles to get their necessary needs and maybe that will teach them a lesson
My local Safeway has been doing something similar to this, before the pandemic, because of shoplifters. What my store does: after 8pm they close one set of doors, and create a fence/ barrier with shopping carts, so to bottleneck people through a small area. Do you know how hard it is to try to climb over all those carts, as opposed to the fence shown in this video??
The ones here do that but the open one is closer to the alcohol aisles and the checkers face the closed door rather than the open one. Employees aren't allowed to chase anyway. Shoplifters will use the emergency exits too.
I've heard of land owners, from long ago, telling how they catch wild hogs. They find the hogs food and water source, and build a big fence around it. At first the hogs will notice, but they get used to it because they are not hungry. As soon as they get comfortable with that freedom removed, the land owner depletes the property even more. The hogs notice, but soon adjust, because they are not hungry or thirsty. And soon the feed trough the hogs have been led to, lead to shaves, showers, and places to be taken care of.
Why don’t they have a specific locked place in the store where you must present ID to get in and the liquor is behind locked cabinets. Then it must be paid for inside thus little area.
@@59phonebone we used to buy heavy bags of potting soil at a Orchard Supply Hardware store and you grabbed the ticket and paid for it at the front. Drove through next door and someone loaded it. You could pass a counter at the front and present your receipt. Right now the Tide and others are locked up at Walmart. I buy it at Costco so that I don’t have to put up with that nonsense.
The last ditch efforts before they just close the stores. Once you "decriminalize" crime, it's hard to turn back. Keep supporting the policies that cause this...and you'll just need to live with it.
So the next iteration for Cali grocery shoppers …. the stores will adopt the way Fireworks Super Stores operate. EVERYTHING will be behind a fence and you will tell a worker what you want. The worker will retrieve it and you put it in your cart. If that doesn’t work you will fill out your order online and pay for it FIRST then the worker will bring your food to your vehicle. Certain behaviors from certain races will demand this type of treatment. Why? For some reason if that store wants to continue to serve that “community” this is the business model it will adopt. Prices will increase due to the increased labor cost and security measures. Either that or drive or take the bus out of your community to shop. Say bye bye to convenience. Don’t complain. YOU did it to yourself.
That is funny, I thought it was the Republican parties fault. The down fall of the American family started in WWII when men failed to stop Hitler and just let him take over country after country. Men went to fight and women were forced to replace the men in their jobs. After the men came home women no longer wanted to stay in the home. Men were to weak and allowed women to gain ground and go outside the house to work. No one was with the children showing them any sort of upbringing. There was no longer any sort of parenting going on. Now with the economy being so bad that it actually pays to be a drug dealer and thief more than working for 15.00 an hour. Churches have also failed due to parents not taking children to church and putting the fear of god into the kid. It will only get worse with the lack of abortions, women will have children that no one wants, men will continue to be weak and walk out as soon as any pressure either financial or otherwise is put on the family. The same thing is happening now with Russia taking over another country and the Republican men are afraid of Russia.
People complain about the inconvenience but don’t realize that if the store closes, think about the greater inconvenience. I will gladly wait a few minutes!!

They're just going to "axe" the store employee to open the expensive stuff so that they can loot the whole shelf and walk out. What prevents that?
Allowing shoplifting causes prices to go up, creates a dangerous environment, causes stores to move to safer locations. Making shoplifting more difficult and less convienent is the sensible thing to do.
I was at the Target store in Millbrae California and witnessed people walking in and eating food without paying like it was some sort of “buffet” nobody even tried to stop them
Eventually, stores will have everything you want behind a counter , employees will take your list and fill it for you.
That's how it was in the 1800's.
Those fences are too low, Pookie and Ray Ray will jump right over that
In Victoria Australia we have barrier doors that will not open if you haven’t paid and many cameras at each register, facial and body.
barriers might cut down on theft, but it might also cut down on sales. no one wants to shop at a place where it’s a hassle to get in and out.
This type of barrier has worked well for Costco since its inception .Congratulations to Safeway for trying something new for them
SF and Oakland, move over. Here comes Stockton. Good work, Gavin. You and the rest of your cronies are turning CA into one big crime spree.
Exactly! If he tried to run for President , nobody in the right mind will vote for him after he screwed up California so bad.
People shoplift these stores until they go out of business, and then they complain that their neighborhoods don’t have any stores.
It’s becoming like Sao Paolo city, the crime is so rampant there many stores have double doors and no one can go in or out without security personnel opening and they check your bags before exiting.
That makes 100% sense in these days!
Having lived in California in the 1990s, I am absolutely not surprised it has come to this. I suspect this "cattle fence" is the initial action and the store will close in the near future.
it is good so the store could stay open...
barriers are better than having the store closed..
You're a registered Democrat, aren't you.
No they're not
And then have everyone complain about the inconvenience, extra cost, and the time it takes to shop? NOT!
No. Better to get out and let the neighborhoods responsible for the lawlessness languish and disappear.
Let the store close. It's NOT good that it stays open.
What's stop them from going out the backdoor?
I guess they don’t know about the jump ability some people have.
Didn’t Safeway just settle a court lawsuit for firing an employee for trying to stop shoplifters?!
Simple solution you must be pre approved to enter the store
And that's going to stop the smash and grab thugs. Good luck with that!
They should handcuff customers as they enter the store so they can't steal stuff
... and change the name to safeword. 😆 Welcome to Safeword, the dominatrix will help you at the next register!
Better than losing the store!
Why are you shopping at safeway? The prices are ridiculous. Winco? Walmart? The Safeway at 19th Street and S Street already has this Sacramento
Because the stupid fence is far cheaper than a uniformed guard.
Just close . The customers complain about the new security systems. Nobody wins .
Some other ways to curtail theft is to tell people to leave their coats and jackets in their vehicles. Plus have customers carry smaller purses. And absolutely no back packs or other large bags.
No jungle bunnies allowed!
Now how can you say that, and every time I do I get banned for hate speech.?
I think businesses and communities like that should just close down and make families have to travel for miles to get their necessary needs and maybe that will teach them a lesson
Let’s hear it for home delivery curbside pickup!
"Dat rayciss !! DAT RAYCISS" !!!!
Baseball bat would have a great effect as well.
You describe the US prison for profit.
Welcome to California!
Vote Gavin out!
Why don’t they have a specific locked place in the store where you must present ID to get in and the liquor is behind locked cabinets. Then it must be paid for inside thus little area.
Sure, but for the laundry soap too? That stuff is much easier to swipe and resell at flea markets.
Every store needs this, especially Walmart and home depot.....
This is the Democratic Party fault!!! Good for Safeway, I support them because I shop their!! We need more law and order in California!!!
And then the screaming goes "That's Racist!!!!"
Shop lifting causes price inflation for us paying customers.
Great to see Safeway fighting back. When your liberal government has abandoned you, it's time to take matters into your own hands.
Inconvenience everyone, And let the thieves go free.
