He’s legendary. He took the Sufi sound to places you wouldn’t think of at the time in the 80’s like Japan, Holland, France, Brazil. The term “World Music” was coined after him.
He was doing festivals when they weren’t even a thing back then
My dad was a huge fan and so am I and God willing my kids will be too.
If you want to react to a modern twist on the qwalli sound react to both Nescafé Basemnt by Zain Zohaib- Haiderium (grandsons of a member of the ensemble Rehmat Ali Khan and Gharoli by Tehseen Sakina both amazing performances

These Sufi-based qawalis can last for 20,30,40, 50 minutes AND the tone and rhythms are driven up and down AND often allows listeners to achieve transcendental nirvana by being entranced into unconsciousness. Many feel they’ve actually connected with their lord. Combining beautiful worshipful poetry with heart-thumping rhythmic tablas taking the audience on a magical journey.

The guy sitting next to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan playing Harmonium is Rahat's Father.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is called "Ustad" Means Master/Teacher in English but it means more like a "Sir".
Whomsoever told you that this type of music is like church prayer songs or Mass is incorrect; This style of singing is called Qawwali which means "Sayings or Quotes" mostly by Sufi poets and mystics, the underlying message of the poetry has a wide range from personal battles of one's inner self, different aspects of life, glorification of the Holy people in our religious culture, Love, hate, relationships and many more themes.
This particular piece was about Glorification of certain holy figures in Muslim & Pakistani religious culture.

    “The Singing Buddha”
16th August is the death anniversary of the revered King of Qawwali who left for heavens for the recording of next unlimited number of albums. NFAK (born 1948), a member of Qawwal Baccho’n ka Gharana (the oldest in classical music) performed on his father’s chehlum ( Chehlum is a religious observance that occurs forty days after the death of somebody) for the first time at 16. Became leader of the party and later the doyen of Qawwali across the globe. His pure, heartfelt, soul-stirring renditions earned him UNESCO’s “The Greatest Musician” title, he is considered by The New York Times to be the greatest Sufi singer in the Punjabi and Urdu languages, and one of the greatest qawwali singers in history. He was described as the fourth greatest singer of all time by LA Weekly in 2016. He was known for his vocal abilities and could perform at a high level of intensity for several hours. Khan is widely credited with introducing qawwali music to international audiences. In the early 1980s. Khan went on to release movie scores and albums in Europe, India, Japan, Pakistan, and the U.S. He engaged In collaborations and experiments with Western artists, becoming a well-known world music artist. He toured extensively, performing in over 40 countries. In addition to popularising qawwali music, he also had a big impact on contemporary South Asian popular music, including Pakistani pop, Indian pop, and Bollywood music. Khan is widely considered to be the most important qawwal in history. In 1987, he received the President of Pakistan’s Award for Pride of Performance for his contribution to Pakistani music. In 1995, he received the UNESCO Music Prize. In 1996 he was awarded Grand Prix des Amériques at Montreal World Film Festival for exceptional contribution to the art of cinema. In the same year, Khan received the Arts and Culture Prize of the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prizes. In Japan, he was also remembered as the Budai or “Singing Buddha”. In 1997, he was nominated for two Grammy Awards, for Best Traditional Folk Album and Best World Music Album. In 1998, he was awarded PTV Life Time Achievement Award. He held the Guinness World Record for the “Most Qawwali Recordings”, having recorded over 125 qawwali albums before his death. In 2005, Khan posthumously received the “Legends” award at the UK Asian Music Awards. Time magazine’s issue of 6 November 2006, “60 Years of Asian Heroes”, lists him as one of the top 12 artists and thinkers in the last 60 years. He also appeared on NPR’s 50 great voices list in 2010. In August 2010 he was included in CNN’s list of the twenty most iconic musicians from the past fifty years. In 2008, Khan was listed in 14th position in UGO’s list of the best singers of all time. Many honorary titles were bestowed upon Khan during his 25-year music career. He was given the title of Ustad (the master) after performing classical music at a function in Lahore on the anniversary of his father’s death. In the early 1980s. Khan went on to release movie scores and albums in Europe, India, Japan, Pakistan, and the U.S. He engaged in collaborations and experiments with Western artists, becoming a well-known world music artist. He toured extensively, performing in over 40 countries. In addition to popularising qawwali music, he also had a big impact on contemporary South Asian popular music, including Pakistani pop, Indian pop, and Bollywood. He collaborated with Peter Gabriel, Michael Brook, Eddie Vedder. His vocals enraptured millions across the globe. Jeff Buckley described him as “my Elvis”
In the summer of 1985, Khan performed at the World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) festival in London. He performed in Paris in 1985 and 1988. He first visited Japan in 1987, at the invitation of the Japan Foundation. He performed at the 5th Asian Traditional Performing Art Festival in Japan. He also performed at Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York, in 1989, earning him admiration from the American audience. In the 1992 to 1993 academic year, Khan was a Visiting Artist in the Ethnomusicology department at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, United States. In 1994 - NFAK did a concert at Royal Albert Hall. The audience cherished Harmonium & Tabla followed by the famous “Allah Hoo” and the night was wrapped up by fusing ecstasy into the air with “Mast Qalandar”. The magician’s spell worked and no one left the hall without dance. Khan’s experimental work for Real World, which featured his collaborations with the Canadian guitarist Michael Brook, spurred on several further collaborations with a number of other Western composers and rock musicians. One of the most noteworthy of these collaborations came in 1995, when Khan grouped with Pearl Jam’s lead singer Eddie Vedder on two songs for the soundtrack to Dead Man Walking. Khan also provided vocals for The Prayer Cycle which was put together by Jonathan Elias, but died before the tracks could be completed. Alanis Morissette was brought in to sing with his unfinished vocals. In 2002, Gabriel included Khan’s vocals on the posthumously released track “Signal to Noise” on his album Up. Khan’s album Intoxicated Spirit was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album in 1997. That same year, his album Night Song was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. In 1988, Khan teamed up with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ, which led to Khan being signed to Gabriel’s Real World label. He would go on to release five albums of traditional qawwali through Real World, along with the more experimental albums Mustt Mustt (1990), Night Song (1996), and the posthumous remix album Star Rise (1997). British-Indian producer Bally Sagoo released a remix of “Tere Bin Nahin Lagda”, which was later featured in the 2002 British film Bend It Like Beckham, starring Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley. His music also appears on soundtracks for Hollywood films such as The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Natural Born Killers (1994) and Dead Man Walking (1995)

Great reaction, guys. Well done. So, I have 3 things to say, which I'm sure you know already, but since it seemed like it slipped your minds, please consider this refreshing of the memory.
    1. You mentioned similarities between the musical styles of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh during the larynx bit. Well, we weren't separate countries before the partition in 1947, and every aspect of our culture, music included, has been shaped over the course of centuries and, in certain cases, millennia. So it's not similar, it's the same; of course, there are variations stemming out of the various community cultures spread across the entire sub-continent, which is why Punjabi music is different from Bengali music, which is different from Hindustani Classical, which is different from Carnatic music, and so on and so forth.
    2. Yes, the second singer is a young Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Good catch.
    3. It's 'Nusrat saab', please, if you don't mind; not just 'Nusrat'. To this day, he remains THE apex practitioner of an entire music genre. Most of us (all three countries) use the term 'saab', which means 'Mr.', as a mark of respect whenever we utter his name. I realise that it might seem odd to you, but it is common practice for us, so I believe most people would appreciate it if you did it as well.
Again, great job. Take care. Much love.

He was a great master, no doubt. But the saragam and ragas come straight from Indian classical text and his music is rooted in that. It's Indian classical music to sing notes and give them akar.

@@s.saleem9936 Equal share?lol Yea sure. Run to claim history which your education denies when it tries to pretend to be arabic/turkish or persian. Normally you hate the heritage and would kill people following the culture of Native India. After all basic sawara are attributed to Lord Shiva. The musical octave is said to have evolved from the elaborate and elongated chants of Sama Veda, based on these basic swaras. You persecute those people who cherished that history.
And no your contribution is "equal"? Your country doesn't go beyond certain genres and styles in hindustani classical and your contribution to Carnatic music is zero. Pakistan was made bare 75 years ago. So attributing the music to Paksitan is like saying it originated only within last 75 years.

What we are today can't change what we done in past, so even if your imaginated allegation about our education and behaviours are true( not denying it because you wouldn't listen anyways) it still can't take away credit of our ancestors. My point was you can't claim a collective heritage as yours only.

@@s.saleem9936 Pointing at irony in your post is not whataboutry. It's the truth. And Indian music has a lot more variety than just Punjabi. or what you have in Pakistan. More importantly I find the claim of OP laughable. Nusarat was a legend but father of modern music in south asia? Maybe for Pakistan. But using the term south Asia is too much.
A revival in Indian music took place towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Rabindranath Tagore composed unique songs which go under the name of 'Rabindra Sangeet'.
Indian pop music is a form of music that emerged in the early 1970s in the Indian subcontinent. The genre blends Western popular music with classical Indian music, drawing from traditional folk music, India’s film industry, and contemporary British and American pop.
So where this claim that Nusrat started it comes from?
