- How to Harley Davidson shifter shaft seal leak repair. This demonstration is intended for Sportster Dyna and Softail models that are set up with a mid controls. The shift linkage travels through the primary and exits from the outer primary cover. However, they are prone to leak if the outer primary cover has been removed without replacing the shifter shaft seal.

Hey Rocco - thanks for the videos. Question, on my 2000 sporty, after replacing the shift shaft (detent plate, springs, clutch etc while I was in there) I have some rotational slop in my forward controls and they don't seem to spring back when shifting. Operation is fine besides that. I hadn't thought of this til now but do you think the spacer and seal comes into play with keeping all of that rotation "stiff"? Wonder if I just have a worn shifter shaft seal. Thanks!
Happy to help. Most forward control shifters are a little sloppy. Thank you for watching and all your support. S. Ride safe and have a great day.
This seal is annoying. My bike is a 2004 l, I bought it new and I’ve replaced this stupid seal several times already. Doesn’t remain leak free for more than a few years then slowly starts. I still love the bike but jeez all the stupid little annoying leaks on these bikes. Good videos Rocco!
Happy to help. Thank you for watching and you sub.Sporty04. Ride safe and have a great day.
I dont see no oil on the floor?
Let me know if you have any question.
Happy to help. You will have to remove the shifter and your primary cover, compensator clutch pack and it's behind that.. If I have a video I'll send it to you. I'm not sure I might have a video on a clutch that will show a little more of that. Thank you for watching and for all your support Jack. Ride safe and have a great day. Sorry to say, I just took a look and I couldn't find a Clutch install video. I put that on my list must make one. Why do you need to replace your sportster shifter shaft?
Thx for the video. Can you let me know what direction the seal goes? Thx
No problem 👍 spring side in. Thank you for your Sub Allen. Any questions just ask. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Thank you for this video. I have the exact same problem with my bike. Do you have a part number or link to this part you used? Is this part something I can get at like an Oriley's or other local auto parts store?
Thanks in advance.
Happy to help. Any questions just ask. That would be a dealer part... $2... Oil leak gone. Thank you for watching and your sub Carlos.. Ride safe and have a great day.
i need to get info on how to replace a open primary belt on a 1995 softail HD the belt is not a chain it is a belt.
I do not have a video on that....Goggle it....Sorry i could not help..Ride Safe..Have a Great Day..
Is the shifter supposed to sit up against the bushing? Meaning the shifter holds the bushing which holds the seal? Because on 95 sporty with original mids, the shifter arm hits the case before the clamp side hits the bushing. I put a washer on before the shifter to take up space but its leaking again 3k miles later.
The seal itself is pressure fitting. The spacer is to keep what you call a bushings to keep the shifter away from the casing. That's how I understand it.. What do you think. Thank you for your comment and watching.
So I been sitting here for 2 hours trying to get rvt out of the shift shaft seal on my 09 Sportster feel like I opened a can of worms. Turns out previous owner was a real genius
Take your time it is straight forward. Let us know how it works out. Thank you for your Sub Vincent. Any questions just ask. Ride Safe and have a great day.
@@TwoWheelRocco took about 20 minutes after that to get all the silicone out new one went in just fine I just pray it doesn't leak anymore cause I did get some mild scratches on the cover
Cross your fingers. All will be well.
What was the tape for?
So you don't scar the seal...That prevents them from leaking...Hope that helped.
I bet still leaking .
Not at all. Did you try?
My bike is 20. In my case bushing and shifter shaft was totally worn out. Changing seal was one day fix . Lucky you.
What year? How many miles?
It's a 20 years old buellx1. Over 40000 miles.
Mine is 2003 XL1200 with 12000 miles. So I did get lucky. Thank you for your Sub Art. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Do you know if this is the same on a dyna? I have a 2009 super glide leaking a little bit at the shift lever

@@TwoWheelRocco thank you

How to change shifter shaft 98 sportster
Happy to help. You will have to remove the linkage. Remove the primary cover remove the compensator and the clutch with the primary chain. Your hardware will be under there. Thank you for watching and all your support Jack. Ride safe and have a great day. Why do you need to replace your shifter shaft?
@@TwoWheelRocco I have a 96 Sportster xlh and mine is bent. The seal seems like it is too big to fit in the front or the back of the hole where the shaft comes out
