Very cool video, interesting topic 👍 would be indeed nice to see more stuff on this old school boxing. Also interesting to see that there are many common principles in this old school boxing and within the various Wing Chun systems. So seems old school boxing has more in common with Chinese boxing than a Lot of us may think 😅

The one thing that people forget is that back then a fight could last a very long time due to a round ending after only a knock down or a knockout. So , the fighters were trained to have a long endurance. One of the benefits of the old guard, was that your opponents punches had to travel a much longer distance, while today, it's not so much. You also had a smaller surface area to attack, due to the sideways stance.
It was also much more efficient, both for reacting defensively and then offensively. I think the last modern boxer to use that stance effectively was Muhammad Ali, where he a modified leaning back stance that allowed him to see and react to punches better, while being a very good defensive fighter. But, a master of that style was guys like Jack Johnson and Bob Fitzimmoms. Other benefit of the lowered but extended hands was that it was more efficient to maintain, a you were fighting for a long duration, while the modern high guard is a lot more tiring as there is a much greater strain on the shoulder to maintain that guard, while its a smaller muscle, compared to to the lower back and the hips , which support the weight of the lower guard.. Other benefit of the lower guard is that the punches are going towards the middle of the body, where a greater amount of force is generated, while the conventional guard is not always that way or generational in force. Just a thought. That is why the sweet science is a thinking man's game.

Good, as amateur boxer I always liked to try to spar with 1800s prizefighters style, assuming by the vintage prints how could have been

I enjoy watching videos on old school boxing because it was a martial art before the Marquis turned it into a sport. I have a theory that old school goes back in an unbroken line to Greco-Roman Pancratium since the Romans controlled England from the 1st-5th Centuries AD
