if i may add to the last technique, he places his upper body weight on the flank of the perp, and creates a large base with his legs apart, so that the enemy isn't just pushing against their arm to stand up they have to push against the body weight and a large leg base. Also, the weight is placed against the elbow to help lock it, and for a finishing touch (may not be possible during the engagement) turn the wrist and bend it as shown (taken from Judo/Aikido/Hapkido style arts). Great vid

Every one of this type of videos draw the "that won't work in a fight"comments. You can never have any technique that will work in any situation. That's a given. Techniques are tools you use in order to condition your responses and instantly recognize the opportunities where they can be applied.

    • @Vincent_Beers

Moves like this are good fundamentals that work against untrained opponents to end a fight quickly. But even a professional fighter needs to understand them or they would lose to them quick. More advanced technique and theory is building on how to adapt around someone who already knows the basics at whatever professional level of development they've reached beyond this.

@@Vincent_Beers With experience you see odd situations coming up all the time. With more experience you come to see many of them as not so odd, just one of several branches off of a tree of natural human movement. If you don't get one opportunity, maybe you get another. You don't plan really, you just flow with what's given to you. Or you even set up situations to prompt responses you like. A lot of judo is like that. Push someone so they push back instinctively, then surge forward into your own pull following their push-back, maybe throw them over your forward leg or hip, which is what you hoped for in the first place. But you prepped them into helping you do it, and do it harder and quicker.

How do you get your attacker to stop throwing punches or grabbing onto to you, and get them to stand perfectly still so you can throw a shin scraping foot stomp?
How about create and maintain distance, throw roundhouse kicks to the legs and box if they get too close. Distance management is all important and many of these kung fuish moves bring your attacker too close. Especially trapping techniques which take years of training to even be viable.

The original green berets in the Vietnam era were trained by master Bong Soo Han in the art of Hap ki Do. His arm technique is good but i personally prefer an over the arm technique. When applied in the same manner when you hit the ground your opponent hits hard with his face, followed up by your body weight. It will either dislocate the shoulder or break the collar bone. I used it effectively as a bounty hunter and with the police.

That leg lock @ 0:38 in FMA is a gunting (grappling) move called 'tigers tail'. If you don't have the angle to lock out their knee, you just put your foot next to theirs and push them in a direction they can't catch their balance with their foot (preferably into any hard angled edge in the environment.)

Thank you. For a long time, I've felt that anyone who kicked above the knee in a street fight was a fool because a good, athletic fighter could grab a flying foot. In contrast, it would be a rare, super flexible, gymnastic fighter who could respond in time to an attack on a knee, shin, or ankle - especially if the kick were disguised by a finger flick to the eyes. However, I haven't even dreamed of some of the kicks you showed. I also didn't know how badly they would hurt. I will not forget any of this video & I'll start training this response immediately.

People who are really attuned to you can see a kick before it's even coming, by your balance shift and overt mental attention. A lot of people tend to look toward their next attack before or after a feint, just like a lot of people tend to pat their wallet pocket after a withdrawal from a bank, giving criminals a heads-up that this guy has money and that's where he put it. Don't pat your pocket after coming out of the bank or using an ATM.

I once witnessed a late night gang street brawl in Northern England back in the early 80s. One over confident idiot took a flying 'kung fu' kick with both feet high in the air at an opponent. Completely missed, landing heavily on his back. Then opposing gang members immediately took advantage, giving him a serious kicking where he lay on the tarmac. Nasty, but hilarious to watch.

In the first video where the guy hits/strikes behind the knee, you can hear the power and sound behind it even if it is from a short distance, and it wasn’t full force nor semi, it was the right amount of dosage so people can see and learn, so imagine if he hit with full force. A lot of people think they have to hit hard by creating distance and gaining momentum then hitting, but to hit from a short distance with power, that’s more internal or chi energy, whatever you call it. To generate such power from a short distance without telegraphing takes practice. It may or may not work on everyone. You have to train yourself and know the right amount of dosage to inflict in order to deter and not destroy or to destroy depending on one’s skill level and energy. It’s not always about strength. The more fluid and supple/relax you are the better in order to generate such power from a short distance or far 😮 😀

Back when I was a teenager in the 1970s, my dad who was a meek mild mannered peaceful man, told me only one self defence move he learned in the RAF [British Airforce]. Kick the opponent in the shin, then quickly and hard scrape the edge of your shoe sole down the shin to the ankle. I always wear steel toe cap work boots everywhere. Can't remember if or what dad instructed me to follow that up with . I guess, he probably said "if possible, then run away as fast as you can".. Actually, now I've watched the next part of the video, I've remembered he also told me about the ear drum buster slap. What a coincidence..Btw, I'm old and fat now, so find it quite educational watching Sumo wrestling highlights on NHK channel. Western folks may laugh at their size, but those wrestlers are so strong and fast at dropping their opponents.

I've done both. These are all interesting. BJJ have similar variations. Instead of #3 they might do an arm drag to back take. And Instead of #1 they might do an outside trip which also locks the knee for a takedown. Their game is to take someone down and control rather than use strikes. So #3 would be most applicable. Though things like #2 if strikes were considered, would likely be used to setup something like a double leg. I've been doing bjj the last while but miss my kung fu instructor from 20 years ago. Can't seem to find him. The guy was incredible. He cross trained with ballet people at one point learning things from them and sharing self defence. One day on the mat he was spinning across the floor. I remember another time he jumped over someone's guard, super high intending to land on them with his knees, and the guy rolled sideways. It was a higher level guy so he'd go harder. Really good times. Much tougher cardio warmups than most BJJ. But man, I wish I could spar with him now using my BJJ stuff as he'd probably give me props :) Anyway, thanks for your service man!

@@BenWeeks-ca Yes..#3 had all kinds of options. I was thinking arm break and elbow to the temple instead of taking him to the ground. Ive had the incredible fortune of finding a tiny group of kung fu people that have been studying the art (Bagua) since the 1970's...they can do things physically that most guys cant do in their 20's. I like to train with BJJ guys because once they get their hands on you you are basically finished if they have some good skill so you have to prevent that from happening. Keep training whatever art you love to practice!

I've trained since the 80s, and I've only ever snagged an armlock twice against a resisting opponent. In both cases, I was larger and more experienced. It's a great way to end a fight without breaking your knuckles. In short, if you snag that armlock, good for you. But you were gonna win that fight no matter what.

That last one was taken from aikido and it's called kote gaeshi ura I mean first part of it, ending is different. That's technicals but in my opinion when your opponent retract his hand this technic is useless especially when opponent is stronger than you, so ending of it in this video is not doable. You have to finish second part of this technic before opponent retract his hand. Probably it is hard to understand this without trying. Also when you applying last technic your hands should always be in front of you in isosceles triangle like in the centre of your body not beside you nor behind you. It's hard to explain in few sentences.

If the opponent 'is stronger' and is able to resist the arm extension, you can simply reverse the technique into a kind of modified/open variation of a figure-4 lock (sending them backwards, in line with their resistance). Though none of this would work on the Tai Chi masters I've worked with.
