  • For Rishi Nair, understanding geography is crucial to understanding what is happening in the world and finding peaceful and sustainable solutions to the problems we face. At 14, this veteran advocate for improving geography education has an idea for bringing greater awareness and attention to geography and geography education. Rishi Nair is a 14-year-old geography prodigy and 8th grade student at Williams Middle Magnet School for International Studies in Tampa, Florida. His love of geography from an early age led to his becoming the 2016 National Geographic Bee champion. This annual competition, organized by the National Geographic Society, is designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world and is open to students from grades 4 - 8. In 2016, more than 2.5 million students from 11,000 schools across the U.S. entered the competition. Rishi has also won honors in public speaking and STEM fields and was a featured speaker at the International Baccalaureate Global Conference in 2017. He is a skilled Carnatic (South Indian) musician, performing both vocal and instrumental music. Next year, Rishi looks forward to attending the Middleton High School Pre-Collegiate STEM Academy. He is considering law, medicine, or international relations/political science as possible future careers. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
