- In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Some people are here for the actual topic while im just here for human geography
Same haha

Im just here for my research.
Same big bro
I'm not a geograher, BUT I do respect and appreciate their cartographic works. They are valuable to illuminate lawyer's works including myself to give indication about traditional land property rights which are not properly accounted by modern laws.
Love this: "Todays maps have created a change in the way that we perceive the world, the way that we interact with each other, and the state and the economy. They have also created a change in the way we are able to represent our own priorities and our own knowledge. No longer are maps no longer held by those who are positions of power but rather are a canvas on which all of us can convey and claim our own future and our own sense of place. They can still be used for resource exploitation, for economic inequality, for the perpetuation of violence, for violations of privacy. They can also be used to democratize, to organize, to advocate, to design and to dream."
Dan was my world geography teacher in college- great teacher! Glad to see him on here- Go Dan!

I'd never heard the term GIS until recently. Reading into it has been a neat little rabbit hole and I have nothing but respect for people who work in this field.
Master's in Disaster Management student here, definitely needed to hear this lecture.
Thank you for teaching me the basics of GIS. An aspiring environmental science student here, starting school this fall. I was looking for a simple definition, but instead, you conveyed the importance of mapping systems as a way of communicating, allocating, and advocating on behalf of groups of individuals whos voice may not be as strong as ours is yet. or at least, doesn't have as much of an audience. Thanks again!
there is no simple answer to what GIS is. he does a good presentation here
I use GIS everyday to map out pipeline construction, so I really appreciate what it can do and the impact it has on the world
Just looking at this professors version of ArcGIS is so unreal. The stuff we use today is so much more advanced, and only in a few years time. Even the sensors we use to collect the data are wildly technological to the point where we can detect (and map) radiation in the atmosphere from space, and report on it twice a month(Limited by how fast the satellites travel around the earth.)
GIS is super powerful and still underrated, don’t sleep on GIS! 😊
Anybody else here from geography? Lol
yass xD
You know it haha
Geomatics Engineering
l wish to be can you help
+Nhi Vuong GIS engineering
I had no idea there would be a TED talk on GIS
me too
Same
I worked on GIS platforms and I often think that very few people are aware about it. But got really happy after watching this video as I got this video after 6 years in 2020 during lockdown while looking for tutorials for GIS.
Anyone here interested in GIS ...I want their company 😂
Lol I am but for a portfolio web app project. Little late to the party I guess.
I think it is a marketing problem, gis/geospatial is not well known outside the industry- you’re spot on!
ME
Yes...! 😍😍😍.. I completed Master of science in Remote sensing and GIS technology.. but didn't find any job.. if you have good connection then only you get job

GIS & commercial real estate made me rich :) Oh, btw, I used to fail in geography at school because I was dyslexic but fortunately GIS is so visual that I can understand very intimately.
What types of tools did you use to maximize real estate profits?
ESRI's Business Analyst & Microsoft's MapPoint
Your definition of "very very rich" is very very obscure. How much money does it take for defining the "very very rich"? If you are very very rich, probably you were not sitting there and making comment.
Hey am into GIS too as a geography student but am not sure how i can take ir on and use it in life as a job or career , it feels like most jobs want GIS to only be a part of whats expected from you :(
dont lie
I love geography, I love GIS. Great presentation on use of GIS. Love the data and the systems.
me too!
not the most captivating presentation
but this is super fascinating topic nonetheless
too bad not too many people appreciate geography..
I hate that . Why do you think that is?
for the topic being geography
it couldve been better with more map visuals. my opinion
geospatial technology highlights the power of geography!
@@Jackson-mi3drhe’s also just very boring. Boring outfit, lack of charisma, low energy, low enthusiasm.
He made it, like the talk it make people know more about GIS.
So nice.
Hello Mr Dan Scollon, wow! I am from Borneo Sarawak, Malaysia. Good info I've got since I am taking bachelor degree in Geomatic Engineering
What are you working on with your degree?
We use GIS in archaeology.
Who else is editing in ArcMap while listening to this?
tomorrow I'm doing a homework in ArcMap
We love you Dan! You did a great job!
Redding is so essential being situated between Sacramento and Reno. Its also a beautiful to live there and a hub as agricultural depot for trade between the north and south western us.
some strange negative comments here.... do you even know what he is talking about?

Same, its 6th period rn and it's due 7th lol, I'm screwed
I just read about GIS in my marketing class. Pretty cool stuff
The Answer is Yes and No. From a theoretical perspective GIS can solve spatial problems. The problem is most people who get into GIS are either heavily dependent on ESRI products and they lack Computer Science understanding. So they are unable to write advanced Algorithms to solve geographic problems. So its very hard to advance the field if all they are is a "GIS Technician/Analyst" which means someone who imports a map into ArcMap, performs some prebuilt Algorithm from ESRI and then done. If you can operate MS word anyone should be able to operate all the ESRI Products and even PCI Geomatics.
I agree. What computer science courses would you suggest? (honest question)
A $25,000 ESRI software is a little more complex than word processing 😂
@@letterzx - It is, but probably 80% of the users do little more than a geographic version of word processing. When every GIS conference is dominate by map showcases, it reduces the incredible power of analysis to little more than graphics.
On the other hand, don't belittle the impact word processing has had on society, and don't belittle the impact of basic spatial overlays. Simple capabilities have some of the greatest impacts.
QGIS is a really great place to start. Using it in an intro to GIS class in BSc Zoology in South Africa,
Went to school with that guy at SF State. Way to go Dan O!
Thx for this presentation!
Why on earth arent fhey showing us the slides??

Anyone here having exams tomorrow on GIS?
ARRGH! 0:56 You show the map for only 5 seconds. I have no photographic memory. I stopped at 1:30. Bad camera team, really bad. What's going on in Redding?
