Tip: I use a small silicon spatula, from kitchen supplies at the grocery store, to hold down hot glued areas in projects. Just in case you can't find finger tip protectors at your craft store. Lori: I love all the sewing and quilting projects; and the videos are wonderful!!! Thanks so much!
I didn’t even know she sold them, but knew fat quarter shop showed how to make them. She is pretty incredible! I wish everyone was like that bc you will always have people use both options

Lori - thank you for sharing. Even though your design boards are part of your business, you are still willing to show your “customers” how to make their own. You are one special lady - thank you again. Stay safe. From a grateful quilted from Redcliffe Queensland Australia
Watching this video again for the umpteenth time!! I’m so grateful you shared this with us. I have made many for myself and for gifts, and after a few years am making about six more. I had forgotten how much I love the old music!!! Haha…so happy and cheerful!! Thank you again.
I absolutely love this!! Not only do I plan to make some for my quilting projects, but I think I'll make a few for my small grandchildren to use with flannel shapes as a playboard. Thank you so much for sharing this idea!!
Hi Lori, my gorgeous Sister Sheree from @Yarravalleyquilting in Victoria Australia has put me onto you ... she adores your work and designs. I've recently discovered quilting after our mums passing last year and I inherited her one of her sewing machines!!! As a creative and crafting family I've taken to it with passion and guts and together over Zoom we are doing your flea market flowers together and she has made me come and watch your videos on making the flowers and leaves. We are loving it. I then discovered this video and as someone just starting out im trying to slowly build both a stash and equipment and have now made about 15 different design boards to cater for all the up coming designs and quilts we want to work on. You made the video so easy to follow and im loving my new design boards ... thanks for being so inspirational and for sharing your knowledge.... you make it easy for a new novice to have expert skills .... I'm now a fan and addicted to your videos ..... truly blessed ... regards Mike 🥰
Thank you for your generosity in teaching us how to make these, multiple times. This is my third lesson and I enjoy seeing how they have evolved over the years. What a great idea. Can't wait to make my first one(s).
I've used a similar type of design board for years. Using corragated cardboard and felt, I have one that is 4'x8', 4'x4' and then an assortment smaller boards of 10"X10", to 24"X24". I've never bound my board as I simply fold and glue the felt over the edges of the back as, basically, I'm lazy. I'd never used batting for a cover as I tend towards high loft polyester batting and it wouldn't be sturdy enough. Craft felt by the yard has always worked well for me as it has a flat but enough texture to work like a flannel board. I once used felt and covered folding closet doors in my sewing room for a design wall. I took off the door knobs and taped and tacked the felt down. Worked like a charm.
I love these and they indeed do the trick of keeping your block designs in order! Thank you for sharing this DIY (even though you sell them yourself!) for those of us who love tackling them ourselves. EASY to make and fabulous to use! ***One suggestion:Use spray adhesive to put the batting on. It sticks easily and you can smooth it out as you lay it down. This is what works for me anyway.
HI Pam, I was just getting ready to use the spray adhesive also, but then I noticed the type I have is only temporary. What brand are you using? I just ordered a glue gun but would love to use spray adhesive if it could be permanent. TIA Sandra
I use a brand called "LocTite". It is something you can find in most any store, not necessarily for fabrics. It says it is a light weight tack and works great to tack down the batting. I have never had any trouble with it coming loose. When it comes to putting the fabric around the edge I do use my hot glue gun. The spray adhesive would not work as it is not strong enough (and also it would spray all over your finished batting and make a terrible mess!)
Thanks so much for sharing with us. Those are so very handy and they sure do help with each project. I love them. I even have a quilt board on a wall in my sewing room big enough to put my blocks or layout to see if I like the pattern or the colors if not before I sew then together I can move them around to see if I like another placement better. Then when pleased with the look,I sew it together. I love these idea. Sewing is so much easier and I make sure the big projects are the way they were planned to look. It has been a life saver a few times when I have put pieces where they just did not go. I have leaned so much from you (a lot from you) and a sweet lady in the UK named Kate, her giant quilt board on one whole side of her sewing room. It’s awesome again thank you for saving me so many times with errors.😊
Thank you, Lori. I made three boards in an afternoon. They were fun to make. I appreciate you demonstrating how to make these boards. These boards will help make quilting so much more fun and enjoyable. They are so cute, too. Who can't help but smile when they see a board full of fabric ready to be sewn into blocks. ❤ A small tip - I used a t-shirt pressing silicone mat as my surface protector when using my glue gun. It worked great. I love your Scrappiness is Happiness book. The Santa hat quilt is on my to-do list for a Christmas quilt for my daughter.
Thank you, Lori!! I'm brand new to quilting, and always figured that keeping things organized would be my biggest challenge (one of the reasons I had never attempted quilting until now) - I would certainly sew seams the wrong way or add a block in the wrong place without some way to keep the bits organized. I really appreciate your tutorials!
Thank you for this tutorial! I'm now truly understanding how handy and valuable these little boards can be when sewing quilt blocks, storing blocks safely, etc. Plan to make a few. I'm SEW impressed with the number you have made for yourself.
I have made several design boards and a few bitty boards for my cross stitch. I like how I can keep things so much neater in my sewing room. I have to sew in short spurts usually and it makes it handy to have all the pieces ready to sew together. I don’t have to pull out my project bin and sort through all the pieces and arrange in the proper order. I am surprised at how much more I can get done in such a short time when all the pieces are on the boards ready to stitch. I love all your tutorials. I appreciate you taking your valuable time to up our game in the quilting and cross stitch world!!❤️🌻
I went back and watched your old video of making a design board. I bought the core board but never made it. Thank you for making another video. I love your fabrics and products. I always buy them for stocking stuffers even if the person doesn't sew (ie daily to do list, bookmarks, etc.) there's always something fun that you design or make.
I LOVE your design boards and I thank you for making it possible for us to diy at home. I have to admit that I just couldn't "waste" Lori Holt fabric on design boards in the past but you're right I should take delight in the cuteness. Thanks Lori.
Thank you so much for showing us how to make these! As a quilter, I am finding these very useful as I create my blocks and also as a means to display special blocks on a small easel! You are a gem!
I made 6 a month ago. I love them! Making quilt that has 63 blocks all different. I can plan 6 blocks at a time. Love, love, love! Thank you Lori Holt for the tutorial.
@Lori Holt - I totally agree with the other commentors that you are a darling for showing us how to make something you sell. These are a boon to those of us who don't have much room and only short periods of time to sew. Such a time saver to be able to pick up what you need to sew rather than spending half your time figuring out what to sew. Thank you and stay safe!
I've made several of those in different sizes, and I love them and use them all the time. I made a couple of them with Insul Bright, which works just as well but doesn't attract lint as much as batting does and therefor looks cleaner after a few months of use. Thanks a lot for this brilliant idea! And for the video tutorial and those magic words "they are never perfect." Because mine aren't either, and I always thought I was just genuinely incapable of making them right.
BONUS!!! Not only did I learn how to make a design board, but... I now know what I’ve been missing my entire craft life!!! A GLUE GUN TOOL BUCKET!!!! Made a list and shopping tonight!
I did your sew along with the mugs and houses and hearts years ago and remember making these at the time. They are they greatest and I think I might just have to make me a new set or two with some of your new fabrics. Thanks for your videos here on youtube.
Thank you for an updated video tutorial. These foam core boards are so useful and when I first made mine I used them without the binding until I unearthed my glue gun and added the cuteness. Now that I’m Cross stitching I will need to add some smaller boards. So happy that you started a UA-cam channel And look forward to seeing your talents and clever ideas in future videos❣️
I want to thank you for sharing these design boards. I am making 12 inch heart blocks with 1 inch finished half square triangles. Having everything laid out sure helped with assembly. Thank you again so much.
Yeah Lori. I just made a design board for a friend this morning. Wish I had watched this before hand. I would love a tip a day from you! It would make my day. Thanks for all you do.
Thank you Lori so much for your kind heart and all your talent that you are sharing these boards and your blocks for us beginner quilters. May God continue to bless you.
Oh my goodness! These boards are game changers! I watched this video when it first came out and just got around to getting some foam board. Now I wish I'd paid attention to this fabulous idea from Lori years ago! After just a week using these boards I can't imagine quilting a project without them. Thank you Lori!
I love these design boards and will make myself a few. Right now I have 3 quilts going and plan to buy the #2 books in a couple weeks , I can hardly wait. I enjoy your tutorials as well and thank you so much for doing them.
Thank you very much Lori, i really appreciate your goung yo detail when teaching , even the place it can be bought . Being in Sri Lanka, i have to use other things as some of them are not available. But still i really have fun watching the video abd motivated to do what just taught. I love the colour combination of your projects and the fun prints and projects . I have just started following you, and please would like to know how i could access your 1. Online store to buy materials 2. To buy the folder that contains everything to complete a project 3 . How to buy the books you publish Thank you
Just found this tutorial.. THANK YOU doesn't even show my gratitude I thought I was going to have to buy something just to store my fabric I'm starting out n the rulers have hit my pocket pretty hard. So again thank you
Lori , You have my heart a racing !! I can't wait until I can get to the fabric store and get some beautiful fabric to make your projects !! Your Materials are my VERY FAVORITES EVER!!! I want to start off making my own fabric boards just like yours from your line of fabrics. I also want your new book ! Love you much sweet friend and thank you for teaching us all your glorious tricks !!❤❤❤
Amazing Idea!! I love it!!! I think I can quilt now. Yes, you right Lori Holt I stop quilting because I keep messing up the blocks and would forget which one to sew and when. But with your design board, I have confidence that I can make a block in a more fun way. I will also need to order your Seams so Easy and the Alphabety!! Thank you for making quilting much easier.
Thank you so much. I love the design board. I just love watching you sew. You and Kimberly Jolly. You two are the absolute BEST!! I have enjoyed your videos and I have purchased material and patterns. After two years and watching you sew I feel like I’m still a beginner. I absolutely love the quilt you made with the 64? Squares. I would love to feel confident enough to do that and the mushrooms. Maybe one day soon.
These were life changers in my piecing. I made several of them a few years ago after watching a fat quarter shop video. I am inspired to make the littlest one for stitching. I appreciate your channel and look forward to it each week.
I didn’t think having a design board would make a difference but I made one yesterday and was I wrong! I used it while I was sewing tiny house blocks and it was so handy. I put all of the house block pieces on the board and was able to sew them together in no time and not get confused about which piece went where. Thank you for the idea, I wish I had used one sooner😀😘
I came across your tutorial for the design boards on FQS about a year ago and made a bunch for my sisters and mom who are quilters - they love them! I had some small pieces of foam core board leftover and made small ones to use with my mini squares. You've created a great way to stay organized - thanks a bunch Lori!
Thank you for sharing your talent. Because of this free tutorial, I immediately purchase your Vintage Housewife shapes. Love all your design and I just stumble on your U tube tutorial today. Thank you❤️
Thank you Lori, Love your things... and just made 2 of these boards while my grand daughters napped. You are so kind to share this. I just love the one i purchased from Fat Qt. Shop too.
Thank you Lori, I just went on the Greater Houston Shop Hop and was lucky to find one of your boards to buy but then all the shops were sold out. Thank you sew much for showing me how to make my own. Hmm. might be great gifts for my Quilting Bee friends!!
Wow I can't wait to make a few of these. I have purchased the largest size from FQS that I use when I'm stitching on a large piece fabric. Keeps the fabric clean and safe. Less handing. Thanks Lori
I made a few 10" and 12" design boards this weekend from foam boards I had sitting around collecting dust from my kids' school days. I love these. Going to make a few more this week. Thank you.
I have many of your design boards that I have purchased. Thanks so much for showing me how to do it myself. That is very nice of you. I'll give it a try. They are so useful. I never start a project without several ready to go on my cutting table.
Thank you for sharing this tutorial. I am eager to make some. I have purchased a couple, but see how great it would be to have several. AWESOME tutorial, and so generous to show us how to make them. That just allows some more $$ for fabric 😎
Lori, thank you for sharing this with us. I am a new quilter and this is going to really help me not mix up pieces. I had to tear out a few mistakes in my last blocks. Lol.😅😊❤🎉🧵🪡✂️
Wonderful! Thank you! I could not sleep tonight, I started reading about your Simple Shapes for appliqué and found your videos. My brain is in overdrive now! Thank you for doing the videos!
Amazing, I just got back from Fred Meyer with 6 foam core boards and here pops up a video on how to make your project boards. Perfect I’ll begin in the morning as it’s midnight now and my bedtime. Thanks ladies, and it’s good to see the new bride back helping mom.
Absolutely amazing idea! I made several 10” ones already but I’m SO grateful you did a separate tutorial on them. (The tutorial I watched was great, only it didn’t seem to be showing as much bulk by the final join)So when I went to make them for me I was frustrated with the joining of beg and end. I love to craft, I love to quilt. I have (almost 3, on Monday it will be 3!) grandchildren and my oldest (5) and I make “critters” on her accuquilt all the time. We use these design boards (I guess I’ll be making more lol 👍🏼🥰) I also started teaching one of my sisters to quilt and she is loving the design board as well. Thank you for sharing!!! I can’t wait to see future great ideas!!!
I made a small one yesterday to keep in my cross stitch bag. I save scraps of leftover binding strips, so I used one of those around the edge. Fun to make and use. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us! I can't wait to get back home and make some up. Then I'll set them up with a few of my projects that are "in time out" as my daughter likes to say. She says that when her quilts don't behave she sends them to time out until they have learned their lesson. She has yet to take one out, so I will make her some of these and see if that helps.
Thanks Lori for your newer rendition!!! I'm just getting back into Cross Stitching after a long hiatus & these are going to be soo helpful. BTW I've been using these already for my sewing and they really do help. I'm one of those types who always sews incorrectly but not any more !! TYA !!!
Excellent camera angles with succinct instructions & tips❣️. The numbered pin heads also work well with that little bit of batting since they can lay flat while identifying the piece.👍
I have made so many of these... but I just sew them with an older machine just like binding a quilt and use a strip of heat and bond on the back... They sew up really fast and look sew cute! Thanks Lori for all the cuteness!
I have been quilting since the 90’s and have used a piece of felt larger than the block. They stack well and also store well. Not as bulky. Have never had problems using this method. Keeps pieces in order.
Thanks for the tutorial, Lori! I have looked at these for quite a while and thought I could make my own, but was afraid they might be a bit messy. You shared some great tips and now I can see this is a project I can do and get a nice, tidy result. Thanks again!
Lori ... thank you so much for sharing this tutorial!!! I am very cramped for space in my small sewing room (actually in my small home everywhere) ... I am so grateful for this tutorial, I am sure that I will make several of these!!! Thank you again!!!
Thank you for sharing this! I have always run in to mixing up my blocks when I go from my design wall to my machine or iron. Sooooo appreciate you sharing this!
I keep going back to this video as I make more of these for friends, AND add to my own collection. It just seems I can never have too many. (Great gifts for my quilt camp friends.)
Thank you for sharing , I was looking for a way to do it until I met you on you tube. I really appreciate your tutorial you are so explicit and easy to follow. Not all the time I can comment because I watch you from my TV which is a much bigger picture.
Lori I made these but first one was terrible (my fault) not good with glue...so I sewed the binding around. Worked! I have an industrial sewing machine so not sure if I would recommend to anyone with home machine. Thanks for tutorials!!! I am a big fan of your channel.
Loved these...... I watched the video with you and Kimberly went right to FQS and ordered one..... then onto Amazon and bought some foam board. I am going to make some bitty ones for my cross stitch bags but will probably love them for my quilting more. Thank you for sharing .... you are truly amazing....... Hugs from Minnesota
Love. I am making me some of these cuties. I have also found that my mistakes happen from the ironing board to the sewing machine. These may make me a great quilter 😊
I’ve made several of your design boards and love them. I’ll have to remember the popsicle stick tip next time I have glue leaking out. Thanks Lori. Blessings and take care.
This is so great and helpful! I have not made boards as pretty as this yet, but the ugly ones I have work great too. They really do save a cross stitch project and lesson the floss and needle frustrations for me. Thank you!
Thanks Lori for showing us how to make these design boards! I have 2 I bought from the fat quarter shop but I’m going try to make some. I just love them so much!
These boards are such a great idea , and are going to be such a help to me in piecing my blocks. So clever! Thank you Lori, for this tutorial. I recently found your channel. God bless you.
Thank you so much. I am a new watcher of your videos. Kept hearing you talk about the Design Boards. Loved them! Now you've shown how to make them. Again. Thank you so much.
I just found your channel!!!! I’m so excited. Thank you for this tutorial on make😁 a design board. That’s so kind of you to show us and not just push your sales. 🎈🎈🎈
Thanks, Lori, for sharing how to make them, I like that they are lightweight too. Up until now, I always made cardboard holders with slits for my cross stitch thread, easily tangles, cumbersome too. Not anymore! 😁 Getting 6 small boards from 1 is a real bargain. I buy foam core board at Dollar Tree for multiple uses. When I was moving, I cut and placed them between my large vases and bowls...guess what, nothing broken when unpacked.
I didnt know about the finger pads either, and I burned my fingers when I made my first two, a few months ago. For the 3rd and 4th, I used a paper stapler to attach the binding. Its not as pretty, but it works surprisingly well. Now I'll just buy the finger pads and use a popsicle stick! Thanks,Lori !

2. To buy the folder that contains everything to complete a project
3 . How to buy the books you publish
Thank you
Me too appreciate this very much 😄
These boards are great! I am also a cross stitcher and they would be awesome in my project bags. Thanks for sharing your technique with us.
Lori, you are an inspiration for a better and fun life. bless. thank you for sharing your talent with the world to make it a better place.
I had left over insulation board and have used it to make my first design board. I LOVE it. Thank you, Lori.
Thank you Lori for being so generous. It’s a great quality to have.
Thank you for sharing your talent. Because of this free tutorial, I immediately purchase your Vintage Housewife shapes. Love all your design and I just stumble on your U tube tutorial today.
Thank you❤️
Love EVERYTHING. Thank you for sharing, and you used every spot, add home organization to your list. You inspire me to be creative.
Thanks Lori
What a great use of leftover batting and fabric strips! Just the investment of some foam core boards and you’re all set!
Thank you so much for teaching this. I have struggles with organizing quilt pieces and blocks , they usually end up in bags. This is such a nice idea!
Lori, thank you so much for the tutorial. I just whipped a 7 inch bitty board following your instructions and it looks superb! Such generous spirit!
Thank you for sharing this tutorial. I am eager to make some. I have purchased a couple, but see how great it would be to have several. AWESOME tutorial, and so generous to show us how to make them. That just allows some more $$ for fabric 😎
I remember that original video with you and Kimberly, LOL! How nice to do an update!
So nice of you to show us how you make those awesome boards! Thank you!
TYA !!!
I do a lot of machine applique so I love these design boards to keep all the pieces together for each project. Thanks for the tips!
“Fun and done!” You need that on one of your journals. Easy tutorial, thanks!
You sew through the foams board!?
@@sherrymaylee9714 yep.. It works pretty slick and looks really nice...
I love the way you set up your instructions, keeps so easy. Can't wait to get your new book.
You do a great job
Thank you for sharing this! I have always run in to mixing up my blocks when I go from my design wall to my machine or iron. Sooooo appreciate you sharing this!
I keep going back to this video as I make more of these for friends, AND add to my own collection. It just seems I can never have too many. (Great gifts for my quilt camp friends.)
These look awesome Lori. I wondered how you make them. Thank you for showing how you do it. Possibilities are endless. 💕🐝
I'm starting today to make them. I think they would make great Christmas presents for my quilting friends. :)
I’ll be your stitching friend! What a great idea!!!!
Love, LOVE these! Thanks for sharing your gifts with us. You're a very talented lady.
Love. I am making me some of these cuties. I have also found that my mistakes happen from the ironing board to the sewing machine. These may make me a great quilter 😊
Thank you for this tutorial! I'm going out to get the foam core board today . These will make great gifts for my sewing friends. And for me, too!!!
OK, made two very small ones last night as practice... time to make a big one :) Thank you so much!
I’ve made several of your design boards and love them. I’ll have to remember the popsicle stick tip next time I have glue leaking out. Thanks Lori. Blessings and take care.
Thanks Lori....I made some design boards using your directions and they work great!!
Lori, what an awesome idea. A great way NOT to loose your pieces and keep them organized. ❤gayle
This design board shall be a quilter helper. I just love it
I made one a while back and it almost to big for my space.. I never thought of using them this way and stacking them. What a great idea!
Thank you Lori for going over this!
Wonderful tutorial Lori, and Cassidy perfect videoing skills! I did not know about the glue gun finger pads!
Carol I would say as long as it works you are good to go
I will be getting some glue fingers! The glue gun is definitely a challenge for me.
Hi Lori, I've made a bunch of the boards for myself and friends. And yes,, the little ones are great for cross stitch. Thank you so much. Hugs
What type of batting do you use?
@Elizabeth Mika I use any cotton o
@Elizabeth Mika any white cotton or cotton blend...
