Finally, someone who feels the same way about iron's as I do! I've had a vintage GE iron from the 60's since I first began quilting in the 90's and I never use steam! What a boost to my confidence to hear you say that you only use a squirt bottle of water or spray starch. I gleefully said, "ME TOO!" My vintage GE iron cost me $2.99 at a thrift store and I've been using it for thirty years.

I love the piece of fabric with the old dress designs on it. Looks like the 50s or 60s.
Wow, I never knew anyone else who collects vintage irons. I do! I have 13 of them. I use them for the same reasons as you do. It's a neat collection. They don't take up as much room as my 50 sewing machines and they are usually about $5.
I collect them as well, my quilting peeps thought I was nuts using them over their fancier bulky irons...they changed their tune after they saw how well they press! They are fabulous with paper piecing.
I always put non-stick drawer liner on the bottom of my boards so they don't slide around when I don't want them to! I made my first board years and years ago after seeing you talk about them. I recommend them to everyone, quilter or not.
I used an ironing board like this, until my husband made a built in one in my sewing room. But I'm so used to it being portable I still drag it around.

I am so excited about my first vintage iron purchase. It is a German make that was left in an abandoned cabin in 1960, found years later and still works great. It is that wonderful vintage red. Thank you for sharing with us about the vintage irons.

Nice video! I use my antique iron as a book press in my craft studio! I use my vintage Sears steam iron with my vintage Sears ironing board (wedding gifts from my mother who worked at Sears). I use them to iron yardage and FQ fabric for piecing quilt tops. In my sewing 'garret' I use a modern Black & decker steam iron at my portable ironing/cutting pad. I use a mini travel Rowenta steam iron at my DIY ironing TV tray next to my sewing station in the sewing 'garret'. I have a couple of other 'travel' irons, but they don't get hot enough to do anything - basically paperweights.... Thanks for the iron history!

Lori I like to thrift shop to and I have some of the coolest irons, my interest started when one of my customers/ friends gave me his grandmothers Old kerosene iron with a stand and the can to put the fuel in . I was a hairdresser. Enjoyed your videos,so happy you got your own channel.
I love the prints and the boards but when you put the one with legs on top of the cart my brain exploded!! I covered a TV tray but it's otherwise useless. This would be so versatile!! Love your products and your brain!

I completely agree the old irons get hotter. I use my Granny’s old iron in my sewing room and my usual heat setting is about 4 1/4 in the dial. The only draw back is no automatic shut off. You’ve got to remember, not exactly one of my strong suits. 🥴 thanks for video.

I came across an old iron at a second hand store, only $3! My electrician friend checked it out for me and he replaced the plug because the original was open in the center. I bought it because of its weight. Just found this video and I am delighted to hear you love these!

Home Depot always cut my plywood when I ask them to.
@@RodeoCowgirl-55 do you have a problem with them warping? If not, what kind of plywood do you use? My larger ones always warp.
@@brendawallgren8354 I have not made one but I am sure if you would get thick plywood that is used for floors. I still have my wood, have not come around it yet. . I looked at it and it has five layers. If you search more youtubes about making one, you may find more tips.
@@brendawallgren8354 just make sure you use marine grade ply (that's what it's known as in the UK) and you'll have no issues. I've used one 2 years, the fabric wears out before the wood
Awesome tips...great info on antique or vintage irons...my mom’s had a pointy tip and i never had issues gliding it when pressing seams open...with my new irons i couldnt figure why it wouldnt just press without me getting fingers close to open the seams as i went unless i finger pressed first...NOW i know why...its rounded not pointy!
I have made notes and am going to be using every instruction Lori has given here. I will be making a couple larger ones with a wool inner lining for cottons and blocking some needlepoint pieces. Thanks Lori!
I had made a couple of these using different batting and fabric. I just re-did them using your method and fabric! What a difference! I love having the Insul-Bright layer. Your canvas fabric is just perfect for this project! Feels nice and is so cute! Thank you. 😊
Genius! Love the cart topper ironing board. Hub made a big board for me years ago. We stapled heavy straps on one end and one side to make it easy to move or carry. Now I’ve got to make one for the cart! Thank you for sharing. ❤️

Thanks for the vintage iron information. Picked one up at the local antique store yesterday. Used all your tips when looking it over prior to purchasing. No steam holes - check. Adjustable temps - check. Cord free of wear - check. Even asked the clerk to plug it in to be sure it worked - check! Thanks Lori. Next up, making my mini ironing board tonight using the top from an old wooden tv tray.

Thank you for your videos. I took your idea for the ironing board and did the same procedure on the top of a wooden TV tray as I have limited table space in my sewing room. It worked great.
I love this DIY iron boards! I know a lot of the UA-camr quilting channels all love the wool mats. I personally am finding that my pieces are not laying flat and appear to be distorted. I also don’t like the smell of how wool mats. I am not sure if the mats are not cooling enough in between when I iron multi blocks, like to make a bunch of the same parts of a block the iron all of them.

I also love vintage irons. The weight helps to get wrinkles out, newer lighter weight ones don't no matter how hard you press down they just don't do as well as the older heavy irons. I was lucky to have found an old one with a good cord too. But it is a steam iron and has the holes. Maybe some day I'll find one that wasn't a steam iron. I just love your Singer machines and all your fabrics and quilts and ideas. I'm going to subscribe now. Thanks for your videos and information. I'm starting to get into English Paper Piecing - hexagons.

I love having a large rectangular ironing board that I can use for flattening large piece of cloth without having to move it around too much. I made mine out of a plywood board and it's 22"X48". I use two X stands that are available from music stores for my legs on this board. If I get it set up in a good space, I can move around it as I iron. It's covered with white canvas and a layer of batting. Since I didn't have a stapler when I made it decades ago, I used stout cord and sewed it on. My next board was done pretty much the same way, but being smaller, 15"X30", it was easier to sew the cover and batting on. This one sits on my cutting/craft table. My smallest board was one cut from corrugated cardboard and covered with silver cloth and batting, again sewn on. It's 12" square and fits nicely into one of my carry bags. Being cardboard, it's light, but does well with heat because of the silver cloth. Through the decades, I don't know what I would have done without my ironing boards. Lori, your boards look so nice. They are cute! Mine are aging and I'm soon going to have to replace my big board's cover. I think I'll just sew another white canvas top over the one that's on it. I just lazy that way. Love the info on the vintage irons. I have a large one that I love, but it’s a little heavy for me to use every day. I would love to find a smaller one. I to love the weight of the vintage irons.
When those very old irons were used, they were unplugged to regulate the heat. I remember when my mother and grandmother had one.

I have one of those carts, but I got it from Aldi’s, so it’s not quite the same size as Michaels and IKEA, and I’ve been trying to figure out how to put a top on it because the one Michaels has doesn’t fit. The legs are a great idea, and then I can use it as an ironing board, too! Thank you!
PS: How do the legs attach? Do you screw them on first, from the top down; then cover the board? Or do you need to instal a mounting plate for each one, on the bottom? I would imagine 1/2” plywood is too thin to screw them in from the bottom, otherwise.
@@susanmei9980 Hi Susan, they come with a screw in the top so you can either drill a slightly smaller hole to screw them into...or you could remove the screw and screw them from the top down...or you could install mounting plates as well. Hope this information helps!
Lori Holt, Thank you Lori. I really appreciate you getting back to me so quick! I’m just wondering which method you used? Is the screw that comes in the end of it short enough that it won’t protrude through the top of the plywood? Because that seems like it would be the easiest method, if it is. 😊
@@susanmei9980 Hi Susan...yes it's short enough and that's the method I used for this one.
When I am making a larger board and adding legs I use the corner brackets for more stability.
