It might not be a bad idea to pull the oil drain plug and see what all kinds of souvenirs come out with the oil. But the new oil might be too expensive for a dairy farmer? 😂

When I was a senior in high school in 1980 I took my Grandpa’s Oliver 70 in to my Vo Ag class. It had died while raking hay around 1964. It was just parked. When I got into it I found one of the governor weights had come off and gone into the timing gear, and snapped the end of the camshaft off. I was lucky that a neighbor had a 70 that had a cracked block that they let me take parts off of. I was able to get it running again so my grandpa could see it just a month or so before he passed away.

I can’t believe that wasn’t making a heck of a racket when that governor was destroying itself. Good video Ross

Wow, that governor was really toasted, not a weight could be found. The old boy probably thought the weights flew out, that's what I would have thought. Anyways, good job getting it running, still more may need to be done, but that's possibly a later video. Thanks Ross, enjoyed watching, have a good afternoon!

Again you're a good guy Ross . You know a great many things. Prayers to your Grandfather. When the governor went out on the Minneapolis Moline ZB, I was 12 years old and that scared the crap out of me. I thought pistons were going to fly out of it. That was the reason why when I was 16 I took the tractor to school and my class redid the whole tractor.

Flush the oil pan and fresh oil then a magnetic drain plug to catch any steel debris, the aluminum shavings will just have to hopefully stay on the bottom.

It is a 1650 OLIVER. Only the devil alone can destroy one of those. If it has problems, remember, the third time is a charm. Hopefully, it will not be dead. But the devil of farm machinery just might take aim at it and succeed. Ross to the rescue.
Wishing you the best with your granddad.

Hey Ross! I had that exact same thing happen to my C Allis. Was just driving along and the governor weights came out through the aluminum housing. I put a used one on, and have had no problems with it, and that was many many years ago. I was thinking of you yesterday, I went to the Geneseo IL show, and they had a very nice 55 EB combine combining corn. I was thinking that I bet you would love to have yours as nice as it was!

Ross, I bought a D-17 at auction one time, they said it had 'governor issues'. When I tore it apart had not one but two full sets of fly weights under the cover! Well, that broke the ears off the gear..... Like your customer I dug the pieces out and rolled the dice. Ran just fine for me until I sold it. Never heard anything from the buyer, assume it's still going today.

Sorry to hear about your grandpa -- hope he gets better soon. Never dreamed you would so quickly have a service call involving an exploded governor. There are obviously several different kinds of governors used on different tractor engines. I can only ascertain that that one is gear driven off of the timing gears -- that other one is mounted on the side and belt driven. I appreciate the cursory explanation but expect you will share more when you get back to the governor on the 1250. Is the speed control lever actually connected to the governor or the throttle on the carburetor? I still have a lot to learn. Thanks so much.
