The "Get the Knack" album is what we old-timers called a "drop the needle" album. This album was so good, you could drop the needle anywhere, same quality throughout. [ My fellow old-timers will have to explain to the youngsters what a record player was ]
This band was amazingly talented whoever started that Knack backlash will lead a slow painful death whoever that wasn't didn't understand what these young talented musicians bought back to rock and roll...good melodies harmonies rhythm and beat....and talented songwriters...like the Beatles!!
They were great for a short period of time but didn’t have the talent to really sustain it. Their sophomore album was just sort of a re-hash of similar sounding songs. I saw them at the Guthrie Theatre in 79 & they were killer live.
I saw The Knack in 1979 live at the old demolished Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino..They opened for Boston and this was the first song they did. Man that place went crazy. They loved the Knack's energy....
I don't like a lot of the lyrics, but I ALWAYS wanted to see Bruce "Life force" Gary live performing this - THANK YOU to the estate of Mr. Fieger for posting it.
(She's so) Selfish was set to be the Knack's third single from their multi-platinum debut GET THE KNACK. Due to 'harsh cuss words' and sexual references radio stations INSISTED that the single be cut-up. The Knack refused to issue a PG version of (She's so) Selfish and it was never released as a single. Hence, My Sharona and Good Girls Don't were the only two singles from the album....WHAT A CRIME.
Great song and great band. The drums are friggin awesome. Some of the fills he plays are so incredibly cool. Looking forward to this level of playing and musicianship returning.
That first album easily plays like a greatest hits album. Every song is a banger and should be played loud enough to hear 3 states away. Fell in love with it when I first heard it in 1982 (I was 7). Fast forward to September 2018, my son (he's 15 now, 12 then) begs me for a turntable. He immediately fired up discogs and picked this as one of his first four records to go with it. He loves it and still plays it at least once a week. He prefers it to the heavily censored version on Spotify.
Anyone who has ever played live music can attest to how tight this band was. Truly amazing. Percussion--drums AND bass--hold the song together. The rest is just magic. What an underrated band!
I was 19 years old when this came out, and I played the tape over and over so many times! This song always was fun to sing, and I think it was superbly written and sung. Under rated song, and I think it would have made it as a single if there weren't the crude language used considering 1979s standards for radio. But then if they rewrote the words to sound better, maybe it wouldn't have had that awesome naughtiness about it!
I love how the live versions are so very close to the originals -- I mean in the sense that this sounds great without studio tricks and digital effects, etc. Only a handful of bands can do that today... maybe The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, how many others?
I was in USAF Basic Training when this album was released, and I get transported back to 1979, and to my lost youth. It was an amazing time in my life, and these guys were a big part of it all. RIP, Doug and Bruce. I miss you guys...
@@scottprice1958 Cassette,, then vinyl, then CD, and finally digital format. When the next music technology comes out, "Get the Knack" will be one of my first purchases!
i hate the fact that i never got to see these guys live. probably some of the best written stuff of the time. and you can't dismiss the talent of this band. incredible energy from that drummer resonates throughout the remaining members. stripped down and just damn good without all the digital bullshit that accompanies so many productions today. i will never sell these albums. it's nice to see so many folks visiting this band to give them props. turn some more folks on to THE KNACK!
We certainly are Look how far music tastes have plummeted since the Glory Days of Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, The Four Tops, Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel and Nirvana! I'm now living in a music nightmare
This band was a victim of amazing success too fast. I wish that 1st album had been just a bit less popular, so they could have developed better. I remember being a little kid and listening to the radio stations (in Detroit) really trying hard to sell them as "the next Beatles". It was such a set up to fail. Very underrated band.
Sadly, this is very true. It didn't help, though, that their second album sounded too much like "Get the Knack," which caused people to start writing them off as "a one horse pony" that couldn't come up with a fresher sound. Unfortunately, and to create a more perfect storm, The Knack's songs, with their sexually explicit lyrics, came out at around the same time that Congress became involved in the censorship of the music industry. I've always believed this band to be a victim of that lyric-hysteria. Too bad.
Doug Fieger, Burton Averre, Bruce Gary, Prescott Niles - great songs, great live show - so underappreciated. The idiot critics from Jann Wenner's corrupt Rolling Stone Magazine savaged them. Why? For the Ramones or some other talentless act? . Get The Knack was phenomenal, Little Girls a tribute to the 50's early 60's, and Round Trip showed their musical growth/sophistication. I saw them live twice at clubs - phenomenal. They could create so much live with 4 piece band - like the Beatles.
They died because the "Knuke the Knack" campaign slaughtered them. The entire "Get the Knack" album is incredibly good. It IS true that the followup album was lackluster, but by the time the album, the public turned on them, and no matter what they'd put out, it wasn't going to be accepted. Later years, the public remembered them more fondly, but by then their music was completely out of style. A shame.
Jesus Christ, that fucking "Get the Knack".....every single song is a freaking CLASSIC!!!!
One of the best pop albums.
@@Vapourwear to this day it is hard to believe only two singles were issued from that double platinum debut album 💿.
Just spun this album tonight!!! Been forever since I have played it but I still know every single word to all the songs.
BINGO!!! Vastly under appreciated here in 2024.

The brilliance of writing songs about this kind of shit and they are so damn fun…
Incredible.
They were so original. Add to that the musicianship and you had the perfect band! The drums are just BAD ASS!
Killer drummer!
These mfers were so damn good. Everybody did their shit right. No weak link.

I was there, too... they were fantastic. Filled in for Hagar, last minute, as I recall.
I don't like a lot of the lyrics, but I ALWAYS wanted to see Bruce "Life force" Gary live performing this - THANK YOU to the estate of Mr. Fieger for posting it.
One of the best songs on their debut album
My Sharona got this band notice I believe
This song is in the running for greatest power-pop song ever. LONG LIVE THE KNACK.
This was a great album
Fucking great drummer.
Don't swear! The Knack are a *family* act! >snicker

They were a victim of those Puritanical times, I'm afraid. Unfortunate timing on the band's part!
Best song on the album. Tara should have been the B-side.
@@Vapourwear 🎵 Oh Tara had a great beat….it also could have been a Single 🎶
Still sound amazing after all these years. Incredible underrated talent. Bruce & Doug are greatly missed. Thanks for keeping this alive.
Great song and great band. The drums are friggin awesome. Some of the fills he plays are so incredibly cool. Looking forward to this level of playing and musicianship returning.
Yes , Bruce Gary was one of the greatest drummers 🥁 of all time!
Such a good band. So sad most only know "My Sharona".
+RockityRoll so true that mate

Outstanding! Great band, great songs and clever, dirty little lyrics.

Fantastic rhythm playing from Doug. RIP.
One of the worlds best bands Fucking love The Knack..Especially Good Girls Dont
I can't believe only 80,000 hits! This shit is cool!
Fucking classic music!! Knack Rules
I love this fucking band. Along with The Who and The Beatles. Best rock and roll on the planet.
Very underrated. Bruce Gary amaz9ing at drums! Total against the mainstream and totally too cool. Very College Garage rock!

Pure, unadulterated rock!!!!!!
bruce gary was awesome, very under-rated drummer, great album not a bad song on the 1st album!
awesome album, Get the Knack. Brings back memories from the late 70's.
+Jane Miller That they were, i got to see them in Bombay Rock Melbourne right up the front :-)

She's So Selfish - Doug Fieger
First show I ever saw in 1979, was 16 was a friend of mine. Show was incredible on the SMU campus at Mcfarlin Auditorium.
awesome drummer love the guy
The band I regret missing live.
1979 was definitely the year of the knack. The whole album or should I say 8 track awesome.

8 track. Always played in the car on dates. Chicks dug it. 😁

so great to see this drummer live
I agree with you, Ms. RockityrolL !
look at this band , then look at the year , when i hear the must of today,s music i think we are going in the wrong way of music
Rap, boy bands and the X Factor killed music. Now it's all been done and there's nowhere for music to go.....

THE KNACK
My Sharona, good tune....but The Knack was sooo much more than that!! Great music, before your times as far as airplay went...too fuckin cool!!!
thanks for posting all of these. love it ~
thanks
love this one
Thanks for posting all these again, "Doug."
Why hasn't this thing been released on DVD yet?
For my teacher and walker
Walker?? As in "...Texas Ranger?"
Bruce Gary was an animal on the drums
Whoever did the production end of this concert didn't have a clue. He missed so many of Bruce Gary's best moments
I only wish my speakers could do this justice
Doug you were a dirty handsome man. ❤ 2024

Anyone know why Doug and Bruce could not get along?
Is any of this footage available on dvd?
Doug looks like Chevy Chase.
He DOES!!! Hahahahaha!!! Good catch!
Loved these guys,,,,but the public is so fickle ! shit goes out of style so quick.
I am so selfish when it comes to ruckuses. :)
Is that Messi singing?
I know who is so selfish. It is VEVO
Hehehehehehe
Who? So selfish?
They were great musicians but they just didn't have the amount of good songs required to live up to the hype so they died out.
