Lucius is not only the ship’s scribe but also it’s therapist lol Also I can’t believe how good of an actor Taika is. That transition to a pained, tearful expression is incredibly accurate (that’s exactly how I cry when I’m trying to keep myself from crying) :’)
Am I the only who loves Lucius in this scene? He presents really snarkily (sometimes not even by choice), but when you get down to it he's a very kind person and a good friend. He sees through everyone's bullshit and uses that power to emotionally nurture and protect those he cares about. That's why his murder was such a low moment for Ed... but that's also probably exactly why he did it. Lucius wouldn't have believed his act for a second and would fight tooth and nail to stop it.
What kills me is that after confiding in Lucius and expressing himself and getting support from everyone through the talent show, he was STARTING TO DO BETTER.
Thank you, I mean I only watched this show yesterday but man I was so proud of Ed, and I thought it was so sweet the way Ed decided had to decide what would help him through it and He decided to talk it out as a crew :) Its such a Stede way of doing things and I think he just learned it from watching Stede navigate his own feelings. I mean Blackbeard would have never decided to get through his own feelings without violence and instead with singing, And to a whole different crew that wasn't own And then even wanted to host a talent show. He was doing so godamm well for himself until Izzy fucked it up
This is why therapists need hazard pay, so they don't run the risk of their clients throwing them off a ship for forcing them to handle their feelings.
The way that we saw Ed cry like three times on this show and that he has opened up so much to Stede abut his trauma and his fear and his insecurities, even though he is supposed to be this tough murdering pirate guy (according to Izzy anyway). Meanwhile Stede, who even at the very beginning was like „We talk it through as a crew“ and encouraging people to open up and talk about their emotions, has barely actually opened up to Ed. I am so normal about this show.
I’m not smart enough to pinpoint what it means in words, but I think Stede (being as messed up inside as he is) is soothing himself by putting up the facade that he’s all together, and that others can rely on him, talk it through, etc. even though he can’t allow himself (yet) to really talk to anyone [even though he wears it all on his sleeve anyways] and I think that’s a pretty typical trauma response? I.E. having severe anxiety but being able to go up to bat for a friend who also has anxiety
His meek lil "in the blanket fort" broke my heart, he legit sounds so fucking broken and tired... Like especially when his voice broke when he said "y-yeah maybe", someone get this guy therapy, some bear hugs, and yes, someone go bloody summon Stede

Funny, now that I've seen him cry it's my favorite part of his acting, ever. I hope to see him in many roles where he gets to share something so emotionally deep that he needs to cry over it. I've never seen a man in film cry in a more relatable way than Taika before, and it is now my drug of choice.

I'm in the blanket fort the doors the blue cushion" I can't stop replaying this, I'm really bad at dealing with emotions and ever since I was about 13 I started making blankets forts to calm myself. So when I saw a this kind of comfort in the show it was so nice. I was always made fun of by people when I'd talk about what would calm me down but I've always loved this scene. Honestly never had a candle in mine but it's so nice :)
Everytime I watch this, I can't help thinking about when Lucius told Stede how he's fantastic a breakups. You can see it in Lucius's face that he wants to help, but Ed's in a place so much harder to reach than Stede would have been back then.
Poor Lucius gave ostensibly good advice "let go, begin again" here that turned out to have the worst possible repercussions, aaaaaargh. If Ed had just stayed in the blanket fort and wallowed a few days longer instead of immediately picking himself up and dusting himself off, everything would still have been comparatively non-terrible when Stede returned to the Revenge. God damn it!
"Is it safe to have a candle in here?" *eye-roll shrug.* Ed pointed out the danger of a Stede's fireplace on a wooden ship, in a room full of paper. He's fully aware that he's putting everything in danger of burning up, but he doesn't care. He's falling apart, and willing to let others fall apart with him, because if he can't be with Stede then he doesn't see the point of anything. Stede gave him permission to enjoy fine things. Fine foods, fine fabrics, fine books. Ed never thought he deserved nice things before. He was just a pirate who pirated for loot, not for culture. He's hanging on by a thread to the hope that he could still get to keep the nice things Stede introduced him to. When the thread snaps, he decides he doesn't deserve nice things after all. He decides that he actually is and always was unloveable after all. That he cannot have friends, or anything soft, because he is nothing more than a monster, and all that sweetness was just a delusion he needs to let go. He pushes Lucius away because Lucius represents hope for the soft life Stede created, rather than acceptance of the cruel life that Blackbeard created. Ed thinks he isn't worthy of anything more than being Blackbeard. Blackbeard is the demon he has worked for all his life, and Ed is heartsick for Stede, but Blackbeard drives him to be his worst and coldest self. And Izzy LOVES Blackbeard and hates Stede for weakening that paragon of cruelty. I love this show. It's so deep and layered. It's a masterpiece.
The ocean is very small and safe in this show so I'm sure he's fine! When characters can go from place to place in lifeboats so quickly there must be lots of nearby places he could float to, and I won't question the logic at all.
Pirates also don't say "vibes" or construct blanket forts. Besides, David Jenkins has said historical accuracy is out the window and this is a romcom. It's not ending badly.

My only supporting argument is the black adder season 4 finale, there's a funny but compelling way to fallback into historical accuracy while still keeping it silly. Fuck do I know lol they will most likely kill no one, make it that the two fake their deaths using the art of fuckery, they move to China and we all swoon. Boy will we swoon.
