    What gets me most is how quietly accepting Ed is of this. Like he's not remotely surprised to be abandoned. Of course it was going to play out like this; he doesn't get a happy ending. He doesn't get softness that's his to keep. He's "not that kind of person." Anyway, I have to go ugly cry on the floor some more.

      Yep, he takes it like he thinks it's what was going to happen all along. I think that's why this love story feels so real to us attachment wound survivors. We all secretly feel like this all the time.

    I felt a lot of sadness when I saw this ending; but it had to happen. For Stede to solve his mental problems and be sure of his new life as a pirate. (the song is perfect for that scene)

    This scene is heartbreaking and all, but the way Roach asks "What happened to his beard?" and then it immediately cuts to Stede returning home to see what his wife's been up to... Was that intentional??

      Wouldn't Stede be a reverse beard since having him around convinces everyone that Ed is NOT straight?

    • @liquid_pig

      @@briannawarren4174 The way I see it Ed's beard is the Blackbeard persona and he initially sheds that as well as the literal beard on his face to be with Stede 🤔Then he retreats back into it when he thinks living happily ever after with his boyfriend is no longer an option.
      The symbolism in this show is just too juicy, it's the antithesis of the "themes are for eighth grade book reports" brand of writing the GoT showrunners flaunted. Never was that big fan of that show but as a lover and teller of stories that quote makes me so mad lol.

    Through all the comedy and drama, they touched on some really moving and important stuff. And weaved in a bit of historical accuracy. Even down to Stede been recorded to have strolled on deck in his morning gown with Blackbeard. I wonder if season 2 will also include how much more experienced and badass Stede became as a pirate and his second run in with Blackbeard, whilst keeping what made him a gentleman and so loveable to edward. Whilst obviously keeping the show’s canon romances and struggles to get through...

    Kinda annoyed about this scene because Ed doesn't try looking for Stede in case he was captured or hurt, he just assumes he was abandoned? Which okay he was right, sorta, but I just would have preferred him actually seeing Stede make the decision to go back to his wife.

    • @hootowllps
      @hootowllps  2 роки тому +80

      it makes it sadder if he assumed it so quickly tbh since it implies it happened before, especially when it was after he told stede he just wanted to be edward. he probably thought stede only liked him as blackbeard, like everyone else.

    • @Marialla.
      @Marialla. 2 роки тому +31

      @@hootowllps I honestly hadn't considered that angle, that Ed at least partially went back to "being Blackbeard" as hard as possible because he figured that was what Stede was attracted to.
      Not that he thought he would win Stede back at that point. But yeah. I get the thought that "if this is all I'm good for I may as well do just that, then."
      I had only thought he was "being Blackbeard" because he was hurting so much that mayhem was the only way he could express his pain.

    • @liquid_pig
      @liquid_pig 2 роки тому +52

      @@Marialla. Ed also seems to be a very emotional person who is quick to assume the worst and give up. We see it as early as the fourth episode, where his master plan to deal with the Spanish falls apart because of one oversight and his initial response is quite literally "guess I'll die" instead of trying to come up with a plan B. When Stede exiles Calico Jack from the ship Ed immediately decides to go with him because he thinks he's just like Jack, so if Stede can't stand Jack then that means he can't stand him either (which obviously isn't true). I think him just jumping to the conclusion that Stede has abandoned him totally tracks.

    • @Marialla.
      @Marialla. 2 роки тому +17

      @@liquid_pig IDK if it's Ed's nature to assume the worst. He couldn't have been a successful leader if that was his general attitude, all givy-uppy. But when we first met Ed, he was already practically suicidal, and felt his life was not worth living as it was, and in despair from his obligation to uphold the persona of Blackbeard.
      For him to return to being Blackbeard with a vengeance is an embodiment of rage. He said he didn't used to do much actual murder before, but he started his rampage by casually murdering LUCIUS, who was a great guy. But Lucius was the record-keeper, and more than anything Ed wanted to erase the memory of his heartbreaking love affair.
      I think Season Two will be long and painful, with lots of misunderstandings, misdirections, warfare, side quests, and general just misconnections between Stede and Ed. I hope in the end they get back together, but I'm honestly not sure they will. I'm actually not even sure how they can do a Season Two and retain the lighthearted comedic elements of Season One at all.

    • @liquid_pig
      @liquid_pig 2 роки тому +22

      @@Marialla. Lucius is also the voice of emotional intelligence who's been encouraging and mediating the relationship between Ed and Stede, so of course he has to be the first to go when Ed decides to double down on the toxic masculinity BS that made him so miserable in the first place. He seemed to be coping with his rejection in a pretty healthy way until Izzy got into his head like the walking manifestation of depressive self-loathing speech he is.
      I don't see why the show wouldn't retain the comedic tone. The first season obviously starts out very goofy and gets more dramatic as it goes on, but I think even the final episode did a great job balancing the comedic and emotional elements without either of them undermining the other. The show is very compassionate in its portrayal of emotional and mental health issues and I can't see them just writing Ed and Stede's love off because Ed is struggling.
      I read an interview with David Jenkins where he talks about how both Stede and Ed are emotionally immature, and how Stede in the final episode is experiencing a more mature form of love for the first time and Ed is experiencing a more mature form of rejection, since this is the first time he's properly opened his heart to someone. I think the showrunners want to show their emotional growth in a gradual way. Maybe much like Stede had to go home and confront his past in order to get closure and perspective on what truly matters to him, Ed needs to go through... whatever he is going through in order to learn something similar.
      But of course, I do expect shenanigans in the second season.
      I think this is the longest youtube comment I've ever written, this goddamn show I swear--

    There better be a happy ending in canon for once...for just once, let Romeo have Juliet ... hey, it worked for Warm Bodies!
