- Nat King Cole - Here's that rainy day from this past 1963 BBC TV Show at, 7:40 into that show:
• Nat King Cole // An Ev...
I recall watching that old TV show back then the couple times it aired. Always loved this version of, Here's that rainy day, by Nat but could never find it on any of his many albums and I did search for it. Believe this 1963 TV show was the only time Nat did this song as it was done on this TV show.
Whose here in 2024 ✊🏻
👋
Me it's carol brunettes favorite song
I'm here also bc of Carol Burnett. She was recently asked by Stephen Colbert what song she would listen to the rest of her life if she were only allowed one song. She answered Here's that Rainy Day. I knew the song, but not all the lyrics, here I am. (For Nat King Cole, too!)
Here
Eve Graham. (ex. New Seekers) I've looked for the "right " version of this for years. My favourite song from before my New Seekers days. As with @faithe54's quote of Carol Burnette,, it would be the song I'll sing the day I die!
came here after carol burnette took colbert questionaire if you could only hear one song ... and she said she loved this song... cool it is by nat king cole, wondering now if I've heard it... myself already... maybe when I was a kid...
Same 🤗
So did i
Yup LOL
Thank you Colbert and the amazing Carol Burnett!
lol same here
Carol Burnett said this is her favorite song.
also here for this reason 🪣 🧹

Good God, what a talent.
Maybe
I should have saved
Those leftover dreams
Funny
But here's that rainy day
Here's that rainy day
They told me about
And I laughed at the thought
That it might turn out this way
Where is that worn out wish
That I threw aside
After it brought my love so near
Funny how love becomes
A cold rainy day
Funny
That rainy day is here
It's funny
How love becomes
A cold rainy day
Funny
That rainy day is here
Back when singers had class. No trashy tattoos, vulgarities, or insulting the audiences. What a voice.
👍👍👍
The man was a terrific husband, father & the absolute best singer & piano player I've ever heard! A real legend forever ❤️
The musical swells on this song are simply awesome
Nat Cole is the only singer who truly caught the irony in the lyrics. I like his version the best.
as the son of a new york fireman i grew up with plenty of prejudice but it didn't rub off. i had good friends in the military from 57 to 61 and then spent my whole life close to all. part of it comes from a love for this guy. there is no difference, if anything, they are not only equal but better. always be kind. roc
AWESOME!
Remember Nat had to push hard. He was under a lot of stress. He didn't have the luxery of a big movie career like Crosby, Sinatra etc. He had to have his A game all the time. No breaks. That's pressure. Smoking I guess( I don't agree) relasxed him and then caused him a early death. My uncle Willie Smith played with Nat. My favorite album( I have 3 copies) is "After Midnight" A pure classic. Remember Nat was a jazz superstar before people like Miles were being spoon fed.
Wonderful anecdotal yet concise reflection. Thanks for sharing, Phillip Payne.
awesome 👌
This fine piece of music was the late Johnny Carson's favorite song.
Mr Coles version is a gem
The BEST Ballad Singer of ALL Time...
Is there even a close second?
Yeah sure Sinatra sings heavy metal…
@@Rodrigo11100 lol exactly. Sinatra is king
Sorry. Sinatra
One of those songs I just think about and the tears start.
Began listening to Nat in the 1950s, became a professional singer/musician myself, played full-time for 30 years, did 15 more years in radio, and now 13 years singing in church. After all this time and experience and a heck of lot of listening, Nat is still to me, arguably, the best ballad singer I ever heard!
Karl Melanson - Nice to hear such a comment from a professional musician.
Yes, and his daughter wasn't so bad either!!!!
Wonderful ballad singer BUT ----- JOHNNY HARTMAN !
@@murph3001 ...Unfortunately, Johnny Hartman wasn't as big as Nat "King" Cole. The latter didn't just sing ballads.
@@fredferd965 My good friend went to high school with her in western Massachusetts for a hot minute and said Natalie was determined to be a singer, but she was actually not so good at first. She remembers thinking, "why is she singing in this night club"? In Natalie's case, practice made perfect.
nat king cole is an incredible pianist too !
He so reminds me of my father. I return to his videos as a reminder of my dad.
Sammy Davis Jr. Said....after Nat's passing..."We ain't likely to see his 'likes', again, ever"....so very true....he was ultra special in many ways & a great father...👌🌹💖
well, what can you say, the man had a stunning voice with character and emotion; the song is a masterwork. However, when Sinatra sings it along with Nelson Riddles magical arrangement I get misty eyed
Did not realize this song had lyrics. Know it from Wes Montgomery versions. From the guitar great to this vocal extroadinare. Wonderful.
Nat King Cole's voice is soft silky perfection!
THE singer, my favorite.
That suit, the whole set design is AMAZING.
this man's voice is sublime, class and quality
This is profound and Nat does it like he's just heard really bad news. When sinatra sang it it was a love song, of love lost. Both did it wonderfully.
I've never even heard of this song before, let alone that he sang it. My dad loved this guy, and I renember when he used to sing his songs to us. He nailed it too. Not with Nat's particular accent, but with the same deep gusto and vibrato and passion. It was quite something to hear and watch. My dad had a great voice.
Because of his commercial success and appeal, he is often taken for granted. I ALWAYS come back to Nat King Cole.
In my opinion, he and Tony Williams were the greatest of all time.
I wish I could have met him. Taken from us at age 45, Its been said, he gave so much and had so much more to give. I hope to meet him in heaven, where I know he will be. L-O-V-E.
Joe D
First a pianist he didn't think much about singing. then he sand and accompanied himself and reinvented this music. He was the lead advance that brought so much love and respect for his people. The most talented people to occupy this world.
Best singer of ALL TIME! As a fan of Elvis and Frank- BEST SINGER OF ALL TIME!
This is an arrangement that Nat had the ok on. It is timeless and classic.
Mostly losing.... that's how it seems to work out for most people. Certainly the tone of this song. What a fantastic singer.
As I listen to this in the half light of late west coast afternoon the rain is softly tapping on the windows and all is mellow and fine.
No matter how awful my day is going or how depressing I find my life in the shitter - Nat picks me up even when he's ripping my heart out.
Me too Darling
It just touches our hearts
I really like and admire the way he takes time with the lyrics and pronounces all the syllables to bring the feeling home.
Well I love them both Frank & Nat they are the best ever to me.
Nat King Cole - smooth as hundred year old wine, crystal clear, pure, mellow, beautiful.......
Nat King Cole had a beautiful voice; He was and still is the best male singer our country , our country has ever had.
Without a doubt!
yea, still miss him..
Hell of a pianist too
NAT KING COLE - Here's That Rainy Day
He failed to make Rolling Stone's recent (2023 New Year's) list of the “200 Best Singers of All Time” - which says more about the list than about Nat King Cole - a singer my mother loved above all others.
Listening just now to Diane Schuur's “Playing Favorites” show on Siriusly Sinatra where Diane included her own jazzy rendition of Here's That Rainy Day. And I wondered whether Nat had ever recorded this, my favorite Johnny Burke / Jimmy Van Heusen love song. If he had I think I would have remembered it. (I have all his albums on CD.) But just in case let's Google for it anyway ....
Lo and behold! This 'live' English TV version - shared at UA-cam “10 years ago” - a color broadcast on BBC from exactly 60 years ago! With an informed note from the one who posted this, Ron J.

Natalie Cole - Here's That Rainy Day
Nat's little girl grew up wishing her father had recorded Here's That Rainy Day - one of her lifelong favorites. She made up for it with what I consider the definitive recording - for her last great album of standards - a Grammy-winner for arranger Nan Schwartz (whose parents recorded with Sinatra).
First offering at UA-cam this night has a 'review' posted “2 years ago” by my namesake:
Has it really been 12 years? September 2008 I posted an Amazon review for Natalie's "Still Unforgettable" CD that included this note to friends:
Do me a favor, would you? When you get this CD, go straight for track 8 - "Here's That Rainy Day," one of the two best songs written by Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen -- the other is "But Beautiful" - the track that follows this one. Just leave your CD running from there . . . for what may be the BEST sequence of several songs on the album -- though every one of these is brilliant, and each arrangement sparkles with subtle, delightful differences.
All my life I've been waiting to hear (what I would declare) the 'best-ever' version of Here's That Rainy Day. Up until now my favorite has always been Sinatra's reading -- to a magnificent Gordon Jenkins' arrangement. This one, dare I say, surpasses Frank's - filling my heart with joy!
Absolutely note-perfect in every way: Natalie's slow and gentle, almost rubato, out-of-tempo, take on "Rainy Day" breathes new life into every word of Johnny Burke's poignant, two-stanza masterpiece. And the arrangement [is] by Nan Schwartz . . . who gets my vote as "Best New Arranger" [2008]. Hope she helps Natalie win another Grammy! [And as it turned out, Nan did just that. ] Thanks for sharing RoundMidnightTV. When Nat King Cole sings he sings it like he lived it! There is no one better! Incredible!
The one some of guys vainly try to imitate when singing in the bath. lol
Simply perfect.
what a pity that he died so very young. NAT KING COLE WAS TRULY 1 OF A KIND TALENTED WITH A VOICE GOD GIFTED HIM i wonder had he lived would he have stayed the course or would he have deviated w different genres?
Here is another great singer Mr. Nat Cole, who passed so very young. Here's That Rainy Day was written by this two great composer and lyricist Vanheusen/Burke what a great combination of talents. RIP and God bless to all.
He was a brilliant performer, and he does justice to this great song.
Ptich perfect. Just look at the cut of that suit! Pure class.
Nat King Cole was the quintessential professional - EVERYTHING about his performance was perfection. His voice was smooth as silk.Nobody today could even come close to his artistry now. Sadly, his generation was the LAST generation of real talent. (Today, there are just freak shows on television...)
elysianfields49 So thankful that these great singers and their great songs live on in UA-cam.
Nat King Cole was a man of class and his voice was amazing Beautiful song.
The best version of this song .
I was told this clip is actually from his 50s TV show shot in England for the BBC. Had searched for his version of this sing for years. Saw him do it on his TV show once or twice and didn't know he never did it on any of his many albums. Only found it on UA-cam after someone uploaded it awhile back.
Sublime version from the worlds greatest ballad singer.
How I love that performer. True class. 👍
Such incredible beauty.
Master class, superb
Great, largely forgotten song (because you have to take your time with it?). This the the only version I've ever heard, after Bill Evans's masterly solo. Even though he did go commercial in the end, Nat Cole was a consummate musical talent.
Nat's always been my favorite of the classic jazz singers.
A wonderful man with a wonderful voice, and a wonderful presence.
Nag was a very classy guy and so very talented. Love man.
Will never forget you, Mr. Golden Voice
I have experienced these emotions and it touches my heart. i am sure many more can relate to this.
Absolutely relate
Nat King Cole, what a singer absolutely incomparable. A God given voice, after so many years that we lost him, he’s still that legend , an icon , forever in our hearts , he was taken too soon. RIP
Understated elegance----he was.....superb. I was too young to hear him at his prime, but we had his albums and I did love them and learned a lot about singing by his incomparable phrasing.
Nat King Cole...one of the greats!
That's how its done,.. pure talent ' thanks Nat.
Absolute class!
The good old days when quality was pure quality
He speaks to my soul. Just outstanding!
i love him damn him for smoking he could have been on this earth so much longer, maybe god needed singers to soothe ppl. our loss
Such a beautiful beautiful voice one my favorite ballad singers. I was a little girl when my parents played his records and I loved his voice.
How wonderful...........!!!!!!!
I've listened to all the excellent versions of this song on youtube from various immortal singers. This is the one I like the best.
Wow. Moves me to my very core.
Just a great performance with one of the best singer.
Awesome!
Pure talent, class, and elegance!

Mind blowing. Gave me chills
Extraordinariamente linda interpretação de Nat King Cole.
God damn brilliant

poetry in motion.
Great rendering by an evergreen singer
Nice! Very emotional song !
Simply wonderful!
This was one of Johnny Carson's favorite songs.
Here because of Johnny's/ Bette Midler rendition on his next to last show.
I like Carsons version as well
Nat is great.

Perfection personified - as always...
Love Nat King Cole and his beautiful voice. :)
What a massively underrated singer
So damned frustrating not to be able to find this on an album/cd! I have the DVD, but still . . . .
I don't know where you live But here in Ohio we have a store called Record exchange and the exchange you could call them because they have vinyl LP's from people's collections there is also cduniverse.com sells LP's now. Let me know how you made out.
@@colejx78 I actually bought the dvd with this performance on it. I have checked cduniverse a while back, but no luck there. Thanks for your input.
Such a privilege, us sharing in his art!
+Mauricio Durón
You state that very well, Mauricio. I feel just like you do.
Mark Kaufman, Topeka, Kansas USA
I never knew he sang that well! Masterful performance!
This is lovely. Here with the Augmented Ted Heath and his Orchestra. Looked for this everywhere but this is the only version I can find. Wonderful upload thank you!
Kenji Omura didn't do a bad job with his version, but he isn't the only talented person that gave this wonderful song a try. This one is short, but sweet. And I'm not a big fan of vocals! Thank you, Nat King Cole.
Thank you for sharing this rare masterpiece! -Robert
Beautiful
just got chills.
Simply fantastic.
Phenomenal.
