Played this while on the sofa, reading, my kitty nearby. Just near the end of the piece, she looked over at the tablet and became fascinated by the hand movement, reaching out a tentative paw to touch the screen.
    She likes music.
I wonder if she's smart enough to have made the connection between the motion and the sound.

@@SunBelle0208 Well, cats watching birds & mice on different types of screens definitely understand what they're looking at, so the hand movement across piano keys making music isn't that far of a stretch 🤔
I just don't know if she, specifically, is smart enough lol

Really loved your interpretation and I really love this piece, it is my favorite from Kinderszenen because I think it really portrays Schumann as a loving father of 8 children.

Thanks for playing this lovely piece of music. However, I completely disagree with the tempo you are playing. In my opinion (and I play it myself), it should be played almost double speed. The harmonies (inner voices) should be "floating", a hidden carpet of colorful harmonic impressions. Most of Schumann´s pieces in "Kinderszenen" are meant to do so (my opinion). I cross checked my opinion with several well known artists such as Martha Argerich, Jörg Demus, Lang Lang etc. and they all perform "Child Falling Asleep" in a significant higher speed. I do, too. What are your thoughts?

    • @PaulBartonPiano
      @PaulBartonPiano  3 роки тому +27

hi Uwe, what can I possibly say to justify my unusually slow tempo after such a solid and well-reasoned comment? and of course, you are right.
... but as you asked for my thoughts, I'll have a go.
I think you'll agree this work has been definitively interpreted in so many historically-significant recordings by, not only the great pianists you mention, but many others too. And yes, they all share the same brisk tempo. And as such, does therefor -- at least in my view, leave the door open to the notion of allowing ourselves the freedom to interpret the work at a slightly different tempo if we feel it takes us that way in the moment, without feeling necessarily obliged to copy the interpretations of others, no matter how good those others might be. Perhaps the best way to enjoy playing piano is simply play the way we feel the music in our hearts in the moment?
As you will know, Glenn Gould intentionally recorded the Beethoven Sonatas at highly unusual tempos precisely, in his own words, because, at that time, they had already been, in his view, recorded definitely. Gould said he saw no point whatsoever in recording the sonatas at traditional performance tempos, even though he easily could have. Gould said the only justification for making new recordings was if he could find valid, alternative tempos. That was the way Gould saw things. To some, Gould's unusual thinking made no musical sense, to others (myself included) it made and still makes perfect sense.
But I didn't take a slower tempo purposefully to be different. The simple reason is this. I read a bedtime story to my 6-year-old daughter Emilie almost every evening. Lately Emilie asked me to play the piano quietly after the story, with her bedroom door open, as she falls asleep. This piece is one of her favourites and I've played it to her often. The first time I took a few bars at different tempos and asked her which speed she preferred, the normal tempo or the slower? -- she said the slower. This recording is simply a home-video playing Schumann for our daughter Emilie as she was actually falling asleep and I was thinking about her.
I live in a crazy bustling city, everyone here is anxious about the virus, especially in Bangkok. Soothing music seems to help my daughter Emilie relax and feel calm at night. My only wish, sharing this video here on UA-cam, is that someone else might find a little peace in the music too.

@@PaulBartonPiano Hi Paul, I´m so happy that you gave me such a detailed and reasonable reply to my comments (I didn´t expected it at all!). Thank you so much! After all, I have to agree that your daughter Emilie is the “game changer” on this issue. What can I say… 😊 . Children rule the world and I wouldn´t dare to argue their will or reject their wishes either (unless it would be out of this world). At one point, I´m with you utterly, for pianists should be able to interpret music pieces as they understand and feel it. However, it might be silly so to play a piece of music differently for the reason that commonly played interpretations have already said everything about a certain piece of music. Glen Gould may be excused for doing so, as we consider him an outstanding, awesome, ingenious and most certainly, crazy musician and interpreter of any kind of piano music. This made him so special. Anyway, I´m a great fan of your piano playing and many times you gave me so much inspiration and such deep insights in to a lot of piano literature that I almost felt obliged to comment your interpretation of “Child falling Asleep” for its utter discrepancy from your usual and very well appreciated play. Knowing the backround now helped to settle the issue and has a deep impact on how you deal with your followers and their criticism and comments. Thank you very much again for spending your time and putting on quite some effort to get my objection straight! Last question: What does Emilie think/feel about Schumann´s “Suppliant Child”? Best regards and stay healthy!

I don't like Schumann. It is probably one of the reasons why I gave up piano, as a pre-teen, because my piano teacher made me work a Schumann's song and, for me, it was just a sequence of notes without pleasure. I discovered later that I loved Bach.

    • @nestorv7627

      :(
That's very peculiar. I didnt have instructors when I was a pre-teen and kinda learned on my own. My first piece I learned was Schumann's Wild Horseman, and the second being The Happy Farmer. Schumann drew me into playing the piano and kept me motivated.
When I discovered "Child Falling Asleep" I immediately printed the score and practiced it on the piano. I remember going to my backyard, look at the stars, and listen to this piece over and over for hours. Schumann holds a special place in my heart.
