Yeah it would be definitely wrong to assume Kurt couldn't play Tony, but he didn't do himself any favors by not choosing Tony songs or something that would be similar
The thing with Kurt's audition is that he chose a song that is completely contrary to what the role of Tony demands. Tony is a lovesick gang member dealing with race/gang issues and a new, forbidden romance on top of that. He is serious with that dash of hopeful optimism and romance, while Kurt's song choice was about a woman proving that she can be the greatest stage star with her comedy. It was just an odd choice to audition with for this role.
I’m torn because yes an actor should not be limited or type-cast and I feel like one of the best parts about acting is putting your own spin or interpretation on a role and really making it your own. At the same time, another comment said it earlier, that Kurt was not doing himself any favors by not choosing a Tony song or something similar. This is something that is touched upon in the next season, but something else that is important to think about is that most of Kurt’s performances are all show bells and whistles (an exception being “I want to hold your hand”), like every song is loud, flashy, in your face, and over the top. Don’t get me wrong, I love that for Kurt and am all for being your authentic self and living unapologetically. At the same time, I feel like it makes all his performances great,….at surface level. Like what is beneath all of that extra-ness? I know there is a soul there but so many of the performances he has, we don’t get to see that vulnerability, that raw ugliness that every person can connect to. When glee did the episode on Theatricality back in season one and Rachel, Quinn, and Mercedes (and Tina?) spied on Vocal Adrenaline’s rehearsal, Shelby was telling Vocal Adrenaline that Theatricality isn’t always about dousing yourself in fire, sometimes it’s about a moment, a quiet soft moment in the dark in the middle of a storm outside, and that silence slowly grows louder until it drowns out that noise and thunder. So I’m relation to Kurt, I feel like sometimes he goes loud and over the top when he should go low, subtle, grounding yet intense to pull the audience in. So can Kurt sell a big number? Absolutely. But dig deep, strip everything away and bare his soul? That, would be the question I would have if I were Artie, Emma, or Beiste.
OMG! I just finished watching the GLEE episode 'I am a Unicorn' and I am blown away by those vocals! The talent in this show never ceases to amaze me. First of all, can we talk about the performance of 'Somewhere' by Rachel and Shelby? Lea Michele and Idina Menzel absolutely killed it with their powerful and emotional duet. Their voices harmonized so beautifully, showcasing their incredible range and control. I had goosebumps the entire time! And let's not forget about Santana and Mercedes's rendition of 'Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead'. Those powerhouse vocals and sassy attitude made this performance so much fun to watch. They were both belting those high notes effortlessly, and their stage presence was through the roof. Lastly, Kurt's performance of 'I Wanna Be a Star' was mind-blowing. Chris Colfer's voice is so unique and captivating. He really brought so much energy and passion to the song, and his choreography was on point. I couldn't take my eyes off him! Overall, this episode had some jaw-dropping vocal performances. The talent of the GLEE cast never fails to impress me. I can't wait to see what other incredible performances are in store for me as I continue watching!
Darren's sublime and passionate performance of Something's Coming set a high standard for me that when I look at other performances of the song, I go back to his. He basically screamed TONY in that whole performance. I remember being so underwhelmed by Ansel Elgort's version in the 2021 remake, then again he was the only miscast in that whole movie. Zero passion at all in that one and his vocals were really so so.
@@TravisViews You absolutely must! It's amazing how it stood apart from the 1961 version which is still a classic. With the exception of Ansel, the rest of the cast were very good including Ariana DeBose who won an Oscar like Rita Moreno did for playing Anita 👍❤
Love your videos and hope you're doing well! It's one of the frustrations of Glee that every character can be dynamic and layered, but they often don't give the characters the chance to be. (Or they do, but then have them slip back into flatness.) Kurt absolutely is a powerhouse... but often just gets sidelined as the flamboyant gay guy, over and over, without nuance. On the other hand, the insistence that Tony could only be a hard, hypermasculine type of guy is also unfair. It would have been nice to see Kurt reach deep and do a more emotional, raw number, AND for Artie+Co to accept that men can be strong and commanding of respect while also being "delicate".
Yes, a major part of acting is being able to be seen by others as that character, although we’ll discuss that more after the next episode. IMO, the bigger issue here is Blaine’s audition screamed Tony while nothing Kurt did fit an audition for the role. If he honestly believed his “Seniors get the lead” BS he should mentioned it to Artie instead of expecting Blaine to just give in…AGAIN! I obviously have issues with the “Blaine leaving Dalton to make Kurt’s Senior year perfect” storyline.
@@TravisViews I have been enjoying your Glee Summary videos on UA-cam you show kindness and positivity in your comments which is great to hear. I hope that you are going to make seasons 4-6? I have been watching your videos and then listening to Jenna and Kevin's show 'and that's what you really missed'.
I think that Kurt just couldn't pull the part off. There are plenty of gay actors that have played straight characters. The guy playing George O'Malley in Grey's for example, is gay and George isn't. I think that at this point in his life, Kurt just has not really practiced acting much, so he couldn't play the part of Tony as well as Blaine could. Blaine naturally gives off more Tony energy, so he doesn't have to work as hard to do that role. He auditioned with a bad song for showing he could do that role, then didn't communicate or practice with Rachel for the scene they did later. (She didn't even know he was gonna kiss her?) so he auditioned badly for that role. regardless, teachers should not laugh at students that audition for anything. It is horribly inappropriate behavior.
The scene with Kurt and his dad in this episode is one of my faves. Burt is the best Dad.

@@navidhudson7065 My favorite rendition of Something’s Coming will always be from the OG Larry Kert but Darren comes very close!
More more glee..love your reactions;) cant wait till you get further along..like when Sebastian comes in
this is quinn's best season but i forgot how intolerable she was in the first bit of the season

Shelby is easily the most insane person on the show, the woman is a always a problem
