Thank you for this video. Learning about NEVER exceeding 200° was good to know, starting out.
I've tried a number of recipes online. Most of them suck.
My first introduction to pomades was Murray's Edgewax. But, I wanted to make my own.
One recipe I found just said:
    7 GM Beeswax
    10.5 GM Shea Butter
    14 GM Jojoba Oil
    That stusf was... dumb.
I experimented with Lanolin and quickly realized... no more than 1 gram, if I'm wanting to wash it out.
    I got this crazy recipe.
I have thick hair, so this works for me.
If you're worried about this recipe, add a touch more shea or vegie glycerine or olive oil... whatever you think would work for you.
    10 GM Beeswax
    5 GM Shea Butter
    4 GM Vegitable Glycerine
    2 GM Castor Oil
    2 GM Flaxseed Oil
    3 GM Coconut Shortening
    5 GM Olive Oil
    2 GM Jojoba Oil
    22 GM Bentonite Clay
This stuff is awesome in the tin. I mixed it good. Ploppedeit in it's tin. Threw it opened in the fridge for a few hours. Pulled it out. Let it come to roor temperature, then I put the lid on.
Next day, to do my hair, I open it and start to play with it. It's definitely clay. It feels like clay. It looks like clay.
You can claw at it like a cave man. That's fun. To draw out a marble sized clump. But you can just rub your finger in there and find it just... emulsifies easily to scoup out a clump. It feels like clay. You rub it into your hand, it feels like a creamy clay. You can feel the grainyness to this. It runs through the hair like Murray's Edgewax... but it's a clay.
It's hold is like Murray's Edgewax... for the most part... but it's a clay.
Like... seriously... it's a similar hold.
Now... too much Beeswax can strangle new hair growth. But... you introduce a crap load of clay... that abundant wax particles get spread out significantly... less surface area... so... the clay allows the hair to breath...I believe that will allow new hair growth to still occur, while retaining more beeswax than what you did in this video.
I have tried to find ANY negative effects of having too much Bentonite or Kaolin Clay in your hair, and I haven't found it. So it seems like a great way to saturate the Beeswax, the same way it saturates the oils and gives a matte finish. You can totally innundate the hair with these clays, with no ill effects. As in... they'll only shampoo and condition your hair. Worst side effect.
I have yet to use BTMS-50... does it do anything for the hold? Like... all I hear is "it's emulsifying".... okay... a soupy wax... cool... how's it's hold? Does it just go for lotion viscosity? Is this a way to make sure bentonite doesn't clump up? I'm thinking once my GRAY Kaolin clay comes in... maybe it might help prevent that... that's happened on other recipes. But, you're supposed to emulsify into your hand anyhow. So... clumping or not... stirred well, it makes a consistent product, on those recipes.
I'm thinking of playing with arrowroot too.

    • @gnomebeard407

Since this is an oil-based clay, it won't make too much of a difference. The purpose of using a conditioning E-wax, is well...for conditioning properties. Both BTMS-25 and 50 have these properties. NOW, if this were a water-based formula, it would make a big difference.

This is a oil based light clay pomade
A real clay pomade or traditional clay needs aloe juice or pure distilled water and much more Kaolin and Bentonite clay. I recommend trying
    Organic Aloe juice
    Bentonite
    Kaolin
    Peg-40
    Carnuba wax
    PG-80
    Candelilla wax
    Lanolin
All small amount after this point
Organic cold pressed Sweet almond oil
    Shea Butter
    Organic Patchouli pil
    Organic Bergamot fruit oil
    Organic Black pine oil
    Organic Ceder bark oil
    And lastly potassium sorbate
This will make a very nice organic mainly plant-based product. You can mess around with the the amount on the ingredients to get a difference in hold, consistency, and finish. It washes easy no matter how mixed. Nourishes hair all day and is easily and quickly Styled and restyled on second day too.
It can be called (depending on how it's made) anything from a heavy clay paste to a thick traditional clay not matter what it has thickening properties and great texture. Also the more you use the lived in kinda look you get.

beck sampson yes it does help. I have moved on from this recipe and have really improved the formula. It's still oil based, but now has PEG-8 beeswax which really helps with the wash out!! Also added a little microcrystalline wax to help it become much more stable and keep it from sweating. I noticed in my original formula, during the summer heat, it would cause little droplets of oil on the surface of the pomade. Microcrystalline wax really helps with this. Tune back soon as I will be uploading the re-formulated pomade!

Fred Rivas it's not a regular emulifyimg wax, it's called BTMS-50. It has the added benefit of being conditioning as it is cationic (positively charged), so it leaves hair tangle-free and feeling silky smooth. It also provides a softer, powdery feel. It's AWESOME when used in a beard balm since it's positively charged, it keeps your beard hair straight! I will be uploading a video on a conditioning beard balm soon!

      3-4 parts coconut oil
      2 parts beeswax
      melt au bain-marie
      2 parts clay powder
      stir gently while cooling down
      Measure parts by volume.
More coconut oil = softer texture, but less concentrated.
Less coconut oil = harder to pull out of the container, especially in cold areas.
