Tldr: I am not saying that I do not agree with societal boundaries and taboos. I agree they exist for a reason; however, taboos and bad actions do not make a story bad. Bad things happen in good stories all the time.
I wasn't insinuating that there ought not be societal boundaries and taboos. I think for the most part these boundaries are very good. I even personally consider Rudeus to be a bad person; however, his less than desirable actions and tendencies make sense within the context of his character progression. He is very unwell man thrust into a world of fantasy. Albeit a slow progression, Rudeus grows throughout the story in several ways whilst expectedly still being far from perfect. Certainly far from Japanese or western ideals. Nevertheless, the show and novels do a wonderful job of showcasing a cohesive and believable(well as believable as an isekai fantasy can be) story of a less than ideal man trying to live a more fulfilling second life. Crossing boundaries or indulging in taboos may make Rudeus and others bad people in our eyes or perhaps it may even make them bad objectively. This does not mean though that taboos make a story bad. Bad things happen in good stories all the time.
