@@linusandhiscamera When you mount the body to the lens, rotate it 45 degrees and you can mount it with the tripod plate facing "down" for vertical shots. That way, you won't have you lean the tripod head sideways. The YT channel Michael Carter posted a good video about the lens 7 years ago.
Given the weight of the camera and lens, using this tripod here is ridiculous. There will be shake from mirror and shutter.. Of course, that's not as silly as using that 400mm for portraiture.
@linusandhiscamera, I just picked up one of the elusive outer bayonet tubes for this system. The no. 1 tube that I ordered will drop the minimum focus distance on this lens from 26 feet to 14 feet-a big improvement! The outer bayonet tubes are hard to come by, so if you ever find any you should pick them up.
It can be really difficult nailing critical focus on these longer lenses since the thing you’re trying to focus can be so small on your focusing screen. Whenever I’m shooting the 150 or longer wide open I always use the little flip up magnifying eye piece and it makes landing focus so much easier! Sometimes use it on the 105 as well when I’m shooting wide open.
2 in the morning in Japan and all I can think about now is testing my Zenzanon 100-220 lens. Great video as always! I always feel like I learn more about posing, composition, and usage of lighting!
This opens up so much opportunity for GAS… i- small megaphone ii - drone carried lightmeter iii - T6-2X teleconverter because 400 not big enough!!! iv - the one serious suggestion; the “Chimney” viewfinder. Much much bigger image to nail your focus on Another awesome and super fun vid. Utterly love your vibe Linus.
Film shooters discovering telephoto lenses :) 400mm converts to about 200mm in 35mm, which is very common in the digital world, and was in the film world as well.
Can you give a bit of detail into what calculations you’re using to turn a 400 into a 200? Later edit: Oh, I see now, I read about the Pentax 6x7. Now I understand what you said.
I have one of those lenses, I really need to find a moment to test it. Regarding the light leak, the fact that it's at the end of the roll and transversally leads me to think that the roll was not tight when it was removed from the camera. The cinestill fill doesn't have anti-halation layer, if the light hits the side of the film it's pipeline to the interior like an optical fiber. It's recommended for these films, no matter the format, to be manipulated in shadow or lower light and a bit more careful. Really nice and interesting video.
It's very cool that you clarified "film photography lens" in the title, cause this doesn't even touch the level of weird you get in projection lenses and other adapted/modified lenses that can go on a P67 :D Great video anyway, what a beast lens!
@@linusandhiscamera do it man! There's so many cool Schneider and ISCO, Meopta, or Kollmorgen, or Bausch/Lomb lenses on the market, we are spoilt for choice now! And you can also pick between the well corrected multi element Cinelux lenses and older technologies like ISCO Kiptar (petzval design) and Super-Kiptar (planar design) and the daddy of all bokehlicious lenses - the Aero Ektar 178/2.5 (also planar) which can cover up to 5x5" so on a Pentax 67 you can do some crazy tilting/swinging with it :)
Love this and as a sports photographer, so much can be done with a big lens and portraits! Think this is about 200mm equiv and it's so good!! Beautiful images sir.
200mm is as far as I went on the Pentax 67 and it is a glorious lens. It’s a big lens and one of my lesser used ones. But it allows for a longer reach which is useful at weddings and really useful when trying to photograph landscapes from far away. I took some shots in Iceland with it and am waiting to get home to develop them now
There's so much compression that the first photo looked photoshopped lol like she was cut out form other picture and paste it in front of that background
I've been eyeing one for the longest time now, so this came in the perfect time! It gives something completely different to the 90 2.8 and 165 2.8 for the P67 system.
Well of course no one would carry this lens around on a camera. That's what makes this video so laughable. For all practical purposes, you can get nearly all the effect with a 165mm 2.8, which is both portable and costs a quarter of the 400mm (this old type lens; 1/10th the cost of the much better 400mm EDIF model).
I have a lens like that for my manual canon cameras. Stop down? F4 is an open stop of light not a stop down loss of light. And yes I would open it up to f4 or more from that far away. And no cable release using a tripod?
wow she looks amazing at 400mm f4, also the flares at the very end might be caused by light going into your eye piece and going through those seals on the viewfinder
man these look phenomenal. Everytime you zoomed in to show more detail, it just looked crazy. Usually when you get compression this strong, the depth of field looks usually too narrow. But here you get the compression but without that annoying shallow DOF, so the entire thing just look expansive as hell. What lens even is this?
Linus can you do a low light concert photography video next time youre out on tour? Im trying to find respurces on black and white film and high iso and all, and there really isnt a ton! Your videos are crucial 😎
Quick question, if the film is a bigger size are images more sharp and better than say a regular 35mm roll of film or is it just dependent on what film stock it is? Thanks! Love the video as always ❤️
Bigger film has more room for detail. Situations will vary, but you should always get a "better picture" from medium format, its just a matter of how much better vs cost of film and ease of use.
Yes! 35mm is physically a smaller film, and because of that is not capable of the same resolution, detail, or sharpness as medium format film is. But 35mm can still be quite sharp depending on the lens and scanning method 🤍🤍
@@linusandhiscamera ohhhh okay, thank you, that's what I was thinking, cause I was comparing it to how digital cameras have different sized sensors and was wondering if it was basically the same with film, but I appreciate it the answers 😁
It’s roughly 200mm as 35mm equivalent which is not unheard of to shoot portraits with. Why talk about it like some crazy never before seen thing lol. Is it just because it’s so big? Canon used to make a 200/2 that people would shoot portraits with and would give similar effects. Lovely images for sure, but I’m not sure if I understand your bewilderment here

Just a heads up, I've had light leaks on the first/last frames of many rolls of Cinestill. Must happen during the respooling process.
