All of my family is waiting for me in heaven. Christmas can be a lonely time. Thank you to my Lord and Savior for this beautiful family plus one. Their music is a balm to my soul.
Another sample of why I have long been a fan of Emmett’s. I’m so happy he’s found a home with this wonderful Petersen family of superb fellow musicians. Such a perfect fit. A very beautiful rendition of this favorite carol.
Just an amazing song. The rawness of Emmett's voice and instrumentation shows the depths of Longfellow's dispair, but then shows the truimph of faith at the end. The blending of the instruments absolutely supports this a well. Lovely joob of showing the seriounsness of faith.
Looking back on this song now, 3 years later, when so much war around the globe has broken out... This song feels so new and fresh, and much needed for our times. ... Thank you Petersons for doing this song, you've moved my heart.❤🔥
The perfect Christmas song for 2020. Emmetts voice is hauntingly superb and along with his dobro playing only adds to the Petersens amazing sound. A very Happy and Peaceful Christmas to you all.
Wow! Old Christmas standards rarely feel so fitting for our times. This is a carol for 2020. I did a quick search for info on when it was written. As some of you may know (but I didn't), it is a musical adaptation from 1872 of a poem written on Christmas Day of 1864 by the American poet Henry Wordsworth Longfellow. So it was written around four years into the Civil War. It makes sense that something coming from that context could resonate today.
That is interesting. And filled with strange coincidence. I live in the south of Jutland, Denmark, and what happened here in 1864 is very much part of history. Look up 'Slaget ved Dybbøl' if you are interested.
I had never heard the origin of the song. Knowing adds so much to the song. Also, wow, great sound and arrangement! Emmet's voice was perfect for it. I cried so much hearing this i had to listen again, multiple times,, right away.
I was reading about the origin of the song…makes it so poignant now and forever. After listening to several different groups perform this song, I was blown away by how well this came across. Well done thou good and faithful servants.
As I watched and listened to this fine performance, I was struck by the thought that many of those who would tout Christendom, the words of Angels, and Advent are the ones who seek to rend the "unbroken song." But, as Longfellow recognized, God is not absent, and all things will be called to account. The song remains unbroken, and with every ring it declares His victory over accursed mouths, wolves, and unmerciful servants.
I can't help the feeling that my heart is getting ready to burst listening to to this, kinda like when the Grinch realizes the meaning of Christmas. They all put so much into every song they do. Love it Emmett....
Beautiful vocal, dramatic arrangement, powerful message: Peace doesn't depend on us or our circumstances, it comes directly from God. Praise to God on high who dwells within our hearts!
Interesting backstory on the song which is based off a poem lamenting the civil war in 1863. So often as we encounter evil and suffering we question God and his purposes. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. BUT TAKE HEART! I have overcome the world!” John 16:33
Yes, a little history of the song was given to us, above in the description, about the song written painfully after Henry Longfellow's oldest son was severely wounded in the Civil War, friend.
It's nice see Emmett featured as a vocalist, in addition to the fact that he's an amazing Dobro player in general. I liked the both arrangement and gentle approach used to deliver this song. Well done gang!
Well done. I have loved this Longfellow Carol for many years. It does help to know the back story. The death of his wife in a Christmas Tree fire, and the grave injury of the son in the Civil War.
Love it! this is my favorite song in the album. Christmas Bells A poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - 1807-1882 I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old, familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeat Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken song Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Till ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, A chant sublime Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Then from each black, accursed mouth The cannon thundered in the South, And with the sound The carols drowned Of peace on earth, good-will to men! It was as if an earthquake rent The hearth-stones of a continent, And made forlorn The households born Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And in despair I bowed my head; "There is no peace on earth," I said; "For hate is strong, And mocks the song Of peace on earth, good-will to men!" Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men."
So beautiful, I feel it deeper every time I listen. Love when the fiddle comes in, it's like Mom's bowed bass on The Scientist. And Katie, you're right, the hmmmms just add something special
It could be simply just be a supportive band member's gaze, which you are putting more life into than necessary...ever think of it that way? Hopefully Katie's private/love interests stay private as long as she intends them too.
Came back here from watching the 2020 Christmas show. Yes, Emmett, knowing the background on some songs can make them all the more interesting, if not special. Well done to all.
A heartwarming song with a great arrangement!! It's almost as if the hummings at 2:14 was the cry of mankind and the instruments joining back at 2:38 was the bells answering those cries. Incredibly beautiful performance
You can tell what a gentle calm soul Emmett is 1st class mate and Julianne getting fuled up before going to college or getting in so Katie don' t eat all the food
Thank you so much for doing this version of the song. This is the version that I grew up with (I'm 64 now). I had never even heard the other version until I heard it on UA-cam. You guys are the best! Truly!
Thank you all for making the best music. You've all kept me sane throughout this year. Emmett your voice is perfect for this song. Petersen family and Franz family you are true artists. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
That is the best arrangement I've heard. (H W Longfellow would approve.) Emmett's voice is "mournful perfect" for these words. And the musical hope infused into the last two stanzas is spot on!
Hearing this one live at their show in Branson last month had me in tears (and several others in their live Christmas show - Julianne on O' Come, o Come Emmanuel and the a cappella version of All Glory Be to Christ. Just WOW!) - and I'm not really a crier! Beautiful as their video performance always are, the perfectly balanced power, lament, and hope of this poem, Emmett's voice, and the dobro in person has made it my new favorite. Thank you for the gift of your music, Petersens - and especially Emmett on this one.
This is the most beautiful version of this song I’ve ever heard. Emmet’s voice and playing are beautiful. And of course you are all beautiful… God bless you and Merry Christmas ❤️
I absolutely can’t stop listening to this album. God has blessed you all with such talent, and you have been faithful in developing and using it. One of the most beautiful and deeply meaningful songs you have done. Thanks! I might have chosen a different outtake for this one at the end though. :)
Here I was poised over the LIKE, full of Christmas joy at Emmett's haunting voice and the band's beautiful rendition.... but then the ending. Jking! Loved it all.
I will never have dinner with Juliane. 😲 What a wonderful song. Being an atheist I can still love the message here, and I hope you don't mind me sharing. And Emmett, we all need you to sing some more. Your voice is great and filled with soul. Merry Christmas to all of you. 💓🇩🇰🎄
Thank you for sharing even though you say you do not believe. Some atheists believe in the scientific impossibility that nothing created everything. Do you as well?
@@scottm4042 This is not a scientific imposibility, unlike the biblical explanation. I love to discuss these matters. But I don't think this is the forum for it. @@kajlauritzen9765 The Bible makes clear, Its answers to the questions of Origins, Meaning, Morality, and Destiny. Truth, and knowledge are fundamental to faith. Absolute Truth is that which is True regardless of what we think about It. Some are documentaries that interview many scientists, who are also Christian. When you say the Bible can't be true, you are making a judgement without ultimate knowledge, like someone trying to judge God, when we only have little knowledge of what God knows. God is Eternal, He is outside of creation. Just looking at all the information in a cell, that make up all of who you are. Who put that information in the cell, originally? Chance. Hardly. It must have been Intelligence. If it is easy to do, can you make a flower out of nothing? A Christian movie called, "A Matter of Faith", also deals with the idea, that any view of Origins requires faith, and we should not be afraid to look at the options out there, and the facts available in deciding our position. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities -- His eternal power AND divine nature -- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse..." Still one of the most moving versions I recall ever hearing. Emmet's voicing was just plaintive enough to set off Longfellow's pain in the lyric. Excellent instrumental arrangement as well. Sublime. And then, the outro...? 🤪 I never thought I'd see a Petersen get her mouthparts pixelated. 🙄 I'm wondering how Karen will react. Git 'er, Mama.
Amazing performance of this song, I had looked all over youtube listening to different artists do this this song but you guys have the best performance of it hands down. The vocals, the instruments, the arrangement, the lighting and sound, the visuals with the cross, love it.

Christmas Bells
A poem by
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - 1807-1882
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."
