Kenny & Amanda Smith had this song for about six or seven years before they recorded it for their 2012 album, Catch Me If I Try. A girl, Tami Lee Pockstaller, had walked up to them at the IBMA festival (International Bluegrass Music Association) and handed them a CD of songs she had written. This song was number two on that demo, and it blew them away.

Sublime melody that deserves to be known throughout the planet. There are still so many wonderful songs that are truly unknown! Karen's voice is perfect for this song. We, the most assiduous fans, already knew that Mamma could sing, even very well, but now the Petersens' general public will also have the pleasure of hearing her splendid voice as a soloist. I love Karen's vocals in this. She's the perfect lead with Julianne's and Ellen's harmonies being spot on. The singing was angelic. I'm not sure who was responsible for the arrangement, but the instrumentation supported this beautifully. I'm not sure Matt's guitar work and Julianne's mandolin get enough credit, and throughout this they provided a solid bedrock for the entire song. And I've been waiting for that outro! Bless you all.

When I saw the Petersens play in Glasgow, and Karen sang Ellen’s verse in Down to the River to Pray, I said to Matt backstage that I’d like to see his mum sing more often on UA-cam. She really has got a beautiful voice.

Ever since I saw that (slightly imperfect) version you recorded in your basement a few years ago I've been hoping that one day you would make an official video of this song. And here it is! Tami Lee Pockstaller wrote a beautiful song. It does not have many renditions up till now but I doubt it will ever be sung (let alone while playing the bass at the same time!) more convincingly than your mom just did. So, thanks Karen.🙏
