PJ DiMaria Yeah, the departure of Vince Lombardi without any fanfare at all did prove fatal to the Packers. From the late 60s throughout the 70s and 80s the Packers were stuck in a mire of mediocrity with no chance of success. Not even Bart Starr of all people could undo this shit. Finally in 1992 the Packers became good again. But for nearly a quarter century Green Bay gave teams like the Vikings and Lions a shot at the playoffs, with Minnesota going to four Super Bowls in the process.
In all honesty, Bart Starr wasn’t ready to be a head coach. Probably needed a couple more years seasoning as a coordinator. He was an awful GM though. Why give someone with so little experience so much responsibility. From what I’ve seen and heard Packers fans in 1970’s willed board to hire Starr. Just when he was figuring it out, he was fired and replaced with a worse coach from Lombardi era Forrest Gregg.
Favre's first full-time starting season, Favre's first postseason game and Favre's first postseason win. The guy had the knack for both the dramatic and the miracle.
Each season from 1992-1995 was a building block to a better season. 1992 yielded a winning record. 1993 produced a playoff season. 1994 brought the team closer to competing evenly with the likes of Dallas and SF. 1995 resulted in a division championship. 1996 was the payoff. One huge key though was the fact Green Bay made the most of opportunities come playoff time. In 1993, 94 and 95, the Packers won at least 1 playoff game each season. I think organizations who consistently win in the playoffs are much more likely to win a championship or two in the process. New England, Denver, Green Bay and Baltimore for example are not satisfied with just getting to the playoffs. They each elevate their playoff appearances to produce Super Bowl appearances. As a result, between 1996 and 2016, Green Bay, New England, Baltimore and Denver have combined for a total of 18 Super Bowl appearances including 13 victories with NE losing to GB and GB losing to Den in that mix. Organizations like the Vikings often make the playoffs but rarely win a playoff game when they get there. No wonder the Vikings don't show up in the Super Bowl. The playoffs is the proving ground for greatness, not the regular season or winning a division championship (although that is a nice add-on).
why in gods name did the Packers choose not to resign Bryce Paup ! ???!!! Had they had Paup with the 1996 andf 1997 teams we would have been even more dominate ~ Reggie Dotson Paup , Brown and Jones to rotate in and out of the dline would have been an amazing thing to behold ! Paup really wanted to stay in Green Bay and lives their to this day . Biggest mistake Wolf ever made ! Well there was Tbuck was close .
jesusoftheapes if I remember correctly Wolf admitted he screwed up On that one. But in his defense the salary cap was just a baby and everyone was playing around trying to figure it out.
Ryan Hunsader : Paup might have helped us get that second super bowl . You cannot call what they did with Paup anything but a mistake . Paup was the outside lb the Packers haven't had since Paup . He would have take that 1996 -1997 defense to another level and it stinks he wasn't along for the ride when we finally got to the dance ! If I could turn back time and told Sterling Sharpe not to land on his head against the Eagles and Wolf not to let Paup walk I would ! Both players would have made Green Bay unbeatable .
@@travismiller4320 Imagine that . It would have been Andy still in charge here . Mccarthy would never have gotten a street and who knows if Ted comes in after to draft Aaron Rodgers . History of regrets is one of a failure to realise things happen as they should . Ray Rhodes let the team and Brett above all run the team and that went bad .
Favre to Sharpe in the Detroit game - still gives me chills!
I remember this year so vividly....you could just tell this franchise was on its way to being Great Again!

Sterling Sharpe and Michael Irvin finished their careers with the same number of TD receptions, 65. Sharpe just did it in 47 fewer games

18:00 the first ever Lambeau leap
5:45 sounds like Fletch, mattress police
The year of the invention of the Lambeau Leap against the Raiders. A true building block season to greatness!
Reggie stepped outta bounces before he lateraled it to Le Roy though. Good thing no Replays then.
81-59-6 Bears ( 17-3 Green Bay )
82-59-6 Bears ( 30-17 Chicago )
reggie reggie reggie what a great time to be a packer fan and no super bowl shuffle

Sharpe n Favre. Top flight!
I believe Ron Wolf says the biggest regret he has is hiring Ray Rhodes instead of Andy Reid in 1999.
