Jake Blount has an astonishing imagination. While a concert of folk tunes could simply be a singer and perhaps a fiddle or banjo, the young proponent of traditional music brought eight bandmates and told the NPR crowd that they were here to play “Black folk music from the future.” Most of the songs are from Jake Blount’s late-2022 release, The New Faith, on Smithsonian Folkways. It’s a dystopian Afrofuturistic concept album that reinterprets traditional Black spirituals.
His band includes the voice of Tiny Desk alum Kaia Kater, rap from Demeanor, fiery electric guitar from Augustus Tritsch and fiddle from George Jackson. It’s a talented crew with a mission to bring the voice, banjo and vivid imaginings of Jake Blount to fruition. “I spent many months during the pandemic alone in my bedroom coming up with these utterly oddball parts that these wonderful people have done a great job learning,” Blount explains. “This is the first time we’ve presented this music with the full instrumentation ever and it means so much to be doing it here.”

Your brother is a fantastic musician. You have every right to be proud
Solid❤
You are right crushing it
Bro's got some skill!
I’ve never heard a bass player blend their tone so well with the drums. What a boss!
This is amazing!
I live in the east of Asia, but it's like I wake up, have some breakfast and walk down the street to somewhere in America, enjoy the music that I never heard before.
I don't know why but my eyes become misty when I seeing incredible people doing incredible things.
Tiny Desk Concert really brings me a lot of joy and inspiration.
Thank you NPR Music!

Thanks a bunch homie
That guitar kid is dope.
He and Rhiannon Giddens should collaborate or at least tour together. That would be amazing.
Hello! Upright bassist from the video here! Jake has actually toured with Rhiannon many moons ago 😆 but they should definitely do more things together 👀
Best way to start a Friday! Feeling these vibes in my soul
NPR delivers another fantastic concert. Thank you
Oh wow, if this is how 2023 will be sounding, I want to sit in that library LIVE!!!!
This is incredible! Such loving recreations of heritage songs
Im not use to hear this genera , but I couldn’t stop listening since the first note….
This was other-level. So refreshing and so different. Seeing you all bop together at the same time was so precious. I haven't heard lyrics that deep in years.
Incredible! Beautiful melding of traditional black folk and choir and new vibe instruments and rap. Jake, you are pure genius. These songs rise. They are beautiful. It’s a reminder to all of us all to remember and honor the creativity of the musicians whose efforts were nearly lost to time. The songs also show listeners how impactful they still feel when you crafted them into a modern blend. The lyrics are fantastic and the rap is thought provoking. What you created worked beautifully. The band is tight. I can’t believe my luck stumbling across this TDC.
I love music and fresh takes and bold creativity are hard to come by. The industry churns out redundant, commercial music. NPR’s TDC, please keep lifting up true artists. Wow. I’m going to listen to this again and just enjoy the interaction between Jake and his bandmates.… please create more historical weavings and banjo jam. ❤
This is so incredibly fantastic! Can't love this enough. Loved the drums, guitar, banjo uke, the fiddle, stand up bass, banjo and those harmonies plus the rap. Jake, such a wonderful combination of talents and soul. Just WOW!
I love this music, and the fact that it is historical black folk music that is a hybrid that has added rap; whaaaaat, absolutely phenomenal!! Thank you NPR never would have heard this artist without tiny desk
and kaia kater!!! couldn't get any better 😭♥️🪕
Yasssss, this is a whole Friday mood!
It’s 05:26 and I’m on my toilet smokin a blunt. Thank you Jake 🎉💪🏾😤🫡🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yay!! I’m so glad Jake is on tiny desk! A modern marvel! ❤
This is literally just the music I'm craving at the moment. As always thank you for this great new exploration.
what a perfect tune on a cancer fullmoon. a blessing from our ancestors. i love this 💕
Yeahhhh Jake and frenzzz! 🤩
Jake and company crushing it per usual 🔥
So so so inventive....love the guitar player's spare playing on certain songs. I keep relistening to this.
I love Jake Blount! Beautiful to see this performance.
Jake is an archeologist as well as fabulous musician/arranger…finding these stories to reimagine then elevate was hard work, brilliant and a gift.
He’s both. Yes, anthropologist studies culture, peoples, etc. but an ARCHEOLOGIST digs and excavates artifacts and that’s how I’m using the word. Jake does that artistically and literally.
if anybody wants to hear some more of jake's music i highly recommend their work with tui!!
Love you folks!!!!
Great playing and singing with beautiful emotion and song delivery 🎶👏👍💗
Happy Friday!!!
black folk music from the future sounds like my jam
Jake's arrangements and all the performances are remarkable, and it's so nice to see Kaia back at the Tiny Desk.

This is my favourite song of all time. I like how people are chilling and truly vibing the song together. I like to sing
along with the repetitive part when listening to this song. Great work!
Jake Blount (and a few of his band members?) is going to be featured in three sets on the Cayamo Cruise next month (Feb. 10-17) and I can't wait to see him (and maybe meet him)! I heard that his newest album was produced by this incredible female violinist named Judy who I discovered playing in a favorite band of mine known as The Horse Flies when they performed at The Telluride Bluegrass Fest more than 23 years ago. We were so impressed with the band that we drove up to Boulder, CO to see them on New Year's Day in 2000. I can hear the syncopated sounds of The Horse Flies in his music!
Bravo! This band is incredible ❤
Thank you for making my morning! ❤️

The haunting sound of City Called Heaven!
Some folk did interesting creative things during lockdown... I adapted a famous Australian verse-novel called The Sentimental Bloke (got rid of the racism and misogyny and updated the lost slang).
❤‘Nuff said
Good performance
Most important folk musician + historian alive right now IMO
