I'm gonna go ahead and address some things here. First off, I'm not a boomer. Recently turned forty. Growing up my pop had a bunch of documentaries, old fights, football games etc...recorded. I watched them repeatedly growing up. For me the difference in this video isn't so much the hits, it's the perfect form and technique. The hustle plays...guys diving for fumbles, running backs blocking, hustling to block after an interception, etc... I'm glad the NFL says safety is a focus, but honestly to me they're pretending. Because of less wrap up tackling, and not focusing on teaching proper techniques (because of the rules) players are more dangerous in their approach to tackling now. Flying into someone head first is far more dangerous than what we saw in this video. Finally, I love today's game for the most part. There are some changes still needed. I have an award for a piece that I did on concussions from the, Kansas Association of Broadcasters. Years ago I slightly altered it for, UA-cam. I'll give the link if anyone wants it! My best memories of old football were the muddy fields and players covered in mud. Try running in that. The muddiest game I remember is the 1977 playoff game in Los Angeles between the LA Rams and Minnesota Vikings. Now that was a mud bowl. Btw the Vikings won 14-7.

I definitely appreciate the point of this video. Football today is just not the same. The one thing I take issue with is showing Bernie Kosar throwing interceptions. He was one of the least likely quarterbacks to throw an interception in that era.

In the 80's,around half of the NFL teams (including the ones playing outdoors) played on turf. Pittsburgh, New York,(Giants since 1976 and the Jets after 1983) Buffalo, Cincinnati, Philadelphia,Chicago (before 1988) New England, Dallas, all played on turf. Houston,Seattle, New Orleans, and Detroit entered the 80s as indoor teams, followed by Minnesota, and Indianapolis in 1982 and 1984. Only the teams in California,(Niners,Raiders,Rams,Chargers) Florida, (Dolphins, Bucs) Green Bay, Denver, Cleveland,Washington, Cardinals (after moving to Phoenix from St.Louis in 1988) and Chicago (after 1987) played on real grass.
There's no denying that NFL Films made the game glorious and glamorous...and makes us all more nostalgic. Slow motion footage with the grunts and groans added for effect. The amount of players who are mic'd up, especially back then, is incredibly rare so the audio we hear in this clip is more than likely taken from some other game, or even some other season.
My family had Redskins season tickets since 1954 and my dad would take us to every home game. I was at the game where the 1st "TV Timeout" happened. The Ref came out, stood over the ball and the roar of BOOS swelled. He was looking at a guy on the sidelines with a sign that had red on one side and green on the other. When it flipped green the game would continue. Changed the game forever. The Redskins were famous for running the ball to the point that the other team would wear out - now they got a programmed break.
I stopped watching the NFL a few years ago and rarely watch FBS games, but I did take in the most recent college playoff. During one of the games, at the beginning of the 4th quarter, the announcer says something like "now's when all that conditioning comes into play" and I'm thinking WTF, most of these guys are playing 6-8 snaps every 15-20 minutes, how does conditioning even matter?
@@chuckyufarley2999 It is all power and snap today in sport. It is about how much they can throw their bid around with artificial rules designed to create unrealistic Performance.

That's the football I grew up on, but as much as I love it, I can also see some parts of it that were never necessary. The odd thing is, even with all the safety rules today, I see what looks to me like more dangerous and vicious play today. Guys are so fast and strong now, and have weaponized the helmet so much, that it seems like there's a lot less "routine" violence now, but what there is now is more catastrophic. Like the Tyler Higbee injury this past weekend. Brutal, dirty, avoidable, cowardly hit. Guys in the video above weren't afraid to actually tackle. Now it's just spearing guys to knock them out and potentially sabotage their entire careers. That seems worse.
Every play now some guy has to run 20 yards down the field pounding his chest pointing at the end zone. Tiresome really. Show some individuality maybe.

The quality of play in the NFL is still good but rule changes and so much advertising and commercials have turned the game into an over 3 hour stop and go entertainment show.
@mildtotemperate well I'm not saying it is, but I can cite some things for you. Michael Francese, did an interview saying to watch out for refs. The leagues make sure the refs can't answer the media. In fact in the NBA ,if an official is allowed he submits a written statement to the league first. They review it and decide on what's allowed to be said.
Early 2000 is when I started to cut back. I’ll watch maybe 2 games tops now the whole season. Drama, ESPECIALLY politics, prima donna, flag football is all you see now. Garbage.
The large proportion of fans, most of whom never played a single snap of the game, created today's version of the game. They hate defense and hard hits. They like shooting matches and track meets, up & down the field. The NFL decided that it was important to ad revenue to cater to them by non-stop modification of the rules that make it easier to score.
That has been happening since the very beginning of the NFL. By 1932, the rules had been drastically changed to help offenses. These were reinforced by 1940, and added to again in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Some of them actually turned out to benefit defenses, so they kept trying. The more the league did to help offenses, the more money they made. This is nothing new.

On SB Sunday in a few days I may fire up a classic old game to watch on youtube. Probably NYG vs SF from January 1991 in the NFC Championship. A proper scrap.
It’s a freak show today ! Just entertainment now . One more thing. The passers of today are no better than they were in the past. The rules changed
It's more fun when the field looks like shit.
AMEN!!!
@@Carlos-sd6czYeah, look at those hits Kosar and Elway were taking, no roughing the passer penalty, just hard nose football, it was beautiful back then, now it:s like watching a wrestling match.
@@welbyrouse76 LOL!!!
When men had testosterone
I remember when football was football: But then they started wearing helmets and don't even get me started about the forward pass.
Hell ya
I miss this football. Too many rules and penalties today. These were the toughest players ever and would hit and pound qb's into the ground.
Today's qb's against greene, niztsky,Burks would not last 1 series. Too many wimps at QB now.days
Butkis,not Burks.
The quality of play in the NFL is still good but rule changes and so much advertising and commercials have turned the game into an over 3 hour stop and go entertainment show.
Now football is woke ass hell.
Except its goodell who made it soft who also hates kapernick. Ur Confused boy.
Get help
Define woke.
"Bro these LIBERALS are trying to WOKEify everything"
clown lmao
White people sure love voting against their own economic interests
All major sports venues are arranged. 💵
That's Football...
Today's NFL is no different than the WWF....SAD...Oh if we could turn back the clock...same for NBA..MLB.
That fat slobs couldn't keep up to todays nfl
Before scripting started in 2018, the outcome wasn't known until there was 0:00 remaining on the clock ❤️🤟🏻
Elaborate how that would have happened. What changed?
Started before that.
That was before the primo arthroscopic sports surgeons we have today.
before football was rigged .its soo obvious now.
The NFL is considered sports entertainment(WWE). They can legally fix games.
Can you explain how the NFL is rigged? Like, how do they pull that off?
@mildtotemperate well I'm not saying it is, but I can cite some things for you. Michael Francese, did an interview saying to watch out for refs. The leagues make sure the refs can't answer the media. In fact in the NBA ,if an official is allowed he submits a written statement to the league first. They review it and decide on what's allowed to be said.
Oh Yea, Bernie Kosar, Would be good today, Played in a tough decade threw a lot of INTs though
Your knowledge is GARBAGE. Bernie once held the NFL record for most consecutive passes without an interception
Elway is in my top 5 of greatest QB'S of all time. He is number 1 of the toughest QB'S of all time...
Most don't remember that there's only one QB that's been to more SBs than him. And that's, Brady.
@@therldrewduncanwhat was Elway's record in Super Bowls? Jim Kelly played in four... Joe Montana was 4/4 in Super Bowls.
Miss the old days.
Love a stadium with pillars blocking the view 😂.
Pre-pink shoes and long braided hair; when men were men.
With brain damage 😂😂😂 you guys sound soooo stupid
Men braiding their hair is hundreds of years old though.
@@thedangerwich5476 Yes. I'm sure that hundreds of years ago, men were hanging out in salons getting their hair braided. F*uck you.
@@oldtimer4888
Didn't they do that on Pirate ships?
@@TheLAGopher Only gay pirates...not that there were any. What a stupid question.
