I flew from Canada to France... in an HOUR?

- Back in the summer, I flew from Canada to France in less than an hour... But how's that possible?
Well, just off the coast of Newfoundland is a tiny French overseas collectivity called Saint Pierre and Miquelon.
These islands are home to only 6,000 people, and they have their own airline called Air Saint-Pierre!
Needing to fly from St. John's to Halifax, I decided to make an overnight detour to France to fly with them, and it was a trip to remember.
With thanks to @MarkBrandonAviation for the use of his photos.

I’ve flown myself there a few times! I visited the Gander air traffic control centre and they had a great story. They said one time the Scottish controllers (who own the other side of the Atlantic) called them and said “hey so we have a French airplane, going from France to France, and they wanna cross the Atlantic to get there”. The Gander controllers had to explain that yes, it has a French airport identifier, but it’s actually on this side so send them over!
There are other French territories in the Americas: Guiana, Guadeloupe and Martinique.
@@afcgeo882 yes, but they do not have French airport ID codes (beginning with LF). Saint Pierre (LFVP) and Miquelon (LFVM) do, which are oddities in ICAO airport IDs.
@@gabrielzeifman That is true.
This also happend during Covid with direct flights from Paris to Tahiti !
I have been to St. Pierre many times but never by plane. When I was younger, my grandmother lived in Fortune and the owner of the ferry was her neighbour so he took me over several times. I have returned 3 times as an adult as well, beautiful spot. Glad you got to visit Alex.
I was in St-Pierre in July 2018 for 3 days. It was one the highlights of my one month stay in NFLD.
Great video Alex. I did not know this French island existed. I live in Pennsylvania in the U.S. I am putting this on my bucket list. I love Canada and my neighbors to the north. Keep traveling safe. Love your videos!!!
You can actually fly direct to Halifax aswell, I recently discovered American Airlines has seasonal service to Halifax, which would make going to Saint Pierre very easy
You can also take a ferry from Newfoundland to the island.
same for me, never knew this.
Normal , most usonians are ignorants about the world ... USAis the worst country of the G7 on education , geography and basic culture
2 islands
Hi my parents are from Saint Pierre and that is how I have dual citizenship 🇨🇦🇫🇷. I've been to Saint Pierre and Miquelon several times growing up. Most of my family and extended family are still there
That was amazing thanks!! Being from Halifax I've always been fascinated by Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Besides the cars and the electrical outlets, I also noticed all the roadsigns are of European standards. You've convinced me to visit, thank you!
The cars and other cargo comes through here on the way to SP et M. Via ACL.
9:44 So finally someone brings a Peugeot 3008 on the island ! I was thinking it was the last place in France without this model
I grew up in Newfoundland and always assume St. Pierre would be very similar just a different language. The first time I went there was while I was doing my flight training. I was blown away. It may be a stones throw from Canada but it is 100% European.
Not really 100% European, as there is a considerable part of the population that drives pick-up trucks and watches (ice) hockey. ;-)
@@jasonborne4330 hockey is very popular in Europe
People in rural areas drive trucks
@@apretarded7248 if you mention "hockey" in Europe, people will think you're talking about field hockey.
While there are people that drive pickup trucks, the number is really low compared to North America.
@@jasonborne4330 It depends where in europe. I'm French and I never heard of field hockey before visiting Canada. For us: Hockey = Ice hockey. Field hockey is more popular in the north.
I'm glad you spent time showing us Saint-Pierre and Miquelon not just the flight. It must be mind boggling to visit this small piece of France just a few kilometers from the coast of Canada where most everything looks European from the French cars, street signs, electrical reciprocals and currency and much more.
I wonder how many Canadians are aware of this place?
hey, i was on the older air st. pierre plane back in 2018! was pretty interesting
I hopped over on foot while I was visiting Newfoundland. The car ferry is relatively new: Canada drug its feet on building a suitable dock at Fortune and it was only opened last year. Previously there was a ferry only for foot traffic.
If you return, be sure to visit the Ark Museum. They have a guillotine there, used once in 1889, the only time a guillotine was used in North America.
Time to move that guillotine to Ottawa....for use again. lol
omfGAWD ‼️ 😮
As a student I interned at the DGAC (french FAA) for a month and people would joke about how well equipped and costly this airport is (state of the art ILS, fully staffed ATC and firefighters...) for the level of trafic it has... But it's their only reliable connection to any major city and having a direct flight to Paris in the summer really means a lot !
In the history column, the last "invasion" of St. Pierre and Miquelon was in December 1941.
Charles de Gaulle sent 3 warships and a submarine. They landed 230 sailors and the Vichy governor did not put up a fight.
St Pierre and Miquelon is definitely a pretty unique place, shows that even a place so small could have a history so rich. When the islands were finally resettled in French hands in 1816, they were resettled by Basques, Bretons, and Normans. That's why you see the flags of these respective groups on the unofficial St Pierre and Miquelon flag at 9:59
And regarding the maritime boundaries for fishing, I understand how they feel. Their EEZ literally looks like a bitten Dum-Dum lollipop! Going the tourism route is the right move.
Not really unique and definitely not rich history. The French and other Western European groups were claiming land as their own, killing and brining disease in the American continent well before 1816. Western European nations were at a very low point during those times with political instability, revolts and plagues. instead of fixing their own problems they brought their problems to a whole other landmass.
the canadian nickame our eez "the French Baguette" for that unique shape
that flag is official.
@@drefhill For the municipality of St. Pierre, yes. But for the national flag of St Pierre & Miquelon, it's unofficial as it's still the flag of France
@@AverytheCubanAmerican It's kind of official as it's flown in front of the Collectivity Building, in the local of the Prefecture and Ministers on visit to the island usually make their speech with the flag of France and the one of Europe as well with this one in the frame. :) As you said, National flag of SPM is the French Tricolor just as National flag of the USA is the The Star-Spangled Banner. But the flag of the island is the one seen at 9:59. The City of St-Pierre has the same flag while Miquelon has another one for the Municipality. You will find a third flag flown on l'Île aux Marins which is a plain white flag with, on its center, two red foot marks. Saying the flag in unofficial as a national flag is the same as saying that California flags is unofficial for the flag of the USA. Both are official, one for SPM collectivity and one for France within the collectivity of St-Pierre exists. :) 🇵🇲
I've always wanted to visit St Pierre & Miquelon ever since I saw that weird little (FR) on the map in primary school, and especially since seeing some uniquely European cars driving around eastern Canada sporting French plates. I'm not sure whether I'd take the ferry or plane - the plane is far more convenient, but the ferry would be an experience in itself (mostly the connections on the NL side).
I worked once for them in YHZ airport, I want to visit one day these islands, great you visit Saint Pierre et Miquelon.
The constant speed propeller is working great. Very pleased to see that France is nice to Canadians.
France is nice to everyone.
St Pierre and Miquelon fun fact: St Pierre was named such after St. Peter, the patron saint for fishermen. While Miquelon was named such by Basque sailor Martin de Hoyarçabal. Mikelon is the Basque version of Michael in Basque Country, so Miquelon is the French way of spelling Mikelon. While the Langlade part of Miquelon-Langlade comes from l'île à l'Anglais which means Englishman's Island
You can't really say you've been everywhere in North America if you haven't been to St. Pierre et Miquelon
Faultless trip review of a place I’ve always found super interesting for many reasons! Also huge props to you for doing this trip report before any of the ‘big name’ aviation channels have done it, as well as blurring out faces. Great work 👍
Great video Alex! I really enjoy your videos. I have such a love for the island of St Pierre because my mom learned to speak French there when becoming a teacher as part of an exchange program in university from Newfoundland. She brought me to the island when I was younger and we recently visited and it was very magical. I have taught myself/learn French and according to the locals I sound like be from SPM with my well practiced French accent. Would definitely go back in a heartbeat.
St. John’s is my local airport so glad you finally got to visit!!
Many of your northern trips have looked physically demanding. This one, on the other hand, looks like fun! 😍
One of my aviation bucket list items is to fly my plane to an airport whose ICAO code starts with something other than C or K. As a westerner the nearest options are MMTJ and PAKT. If I lived in eastern Canada the options would be LFVP and MYGF.
If you go to LFVP, might as well hop to LFVM as well.
TIL Air Saint Pierre have one of the nicest looking aircraft liveries 😲
I agree, so much better than their old oje
This is amazing. Honestly your most fascinating video yet. I always knew it was part of France but had no idea it was so different. Definitely going to do this trip this Summer. Thank you!
Alex you are showcasing airports and airplanes in a wonderful way. This trek to France will be one of your most epic flights I am sure. Thank you for sharing with us your aviation journeys. You learn, we learn. What a great combo!
WOW!! As (an older) Canadian, I am embarrassed to say that I didn’t even know this existed. Thanks Alex.
You are just having too much fun, Alex. Thanks for sharing it with us!
As a Nova Scotian it’s the most beautiful video that you have produced. Thank you
A trip I’ve always wanted to make Thankyou
I live in Halifax and last September I saw a car from SPM in the IKEA parking lot. I had to double take cause I was like those look like European plates. SPM always always been on my bucket list this was an awesome video also loved the shots of flying into YHZ.
Absolutely dope video!
Finally a proper flight report of Air St Pierre on UA-cam and a closer look on SPM. Can’t wait for your next video on the collectivity’s soil!
Great video! The scenery was really nice and it's hilarious that there's a Home Hardware in France!
Dude, this is awesome! I've been waiting for someone to make a video about it, you did a great job.
I saw this plane come in when I was down at YHZ doing some spotting. Was so neat to see, but I never even thought it was from StP&M, I wrongly assumed it was from Quebec. What a great video and neat little trip.
Wow, Alex, thank you for another great adventure!
This is fantastic. I was planning a trip to Eastern Canada this summer and now I've just added St John's and St Pierre.
Thank you~ I've been waiting this for so long 😭
Flew on a Silver Airways ATR 72 from FLL to ELH and was pleasantly surprised at how spacious and quite the cabin actually felt knowing its a turboprop.
Wow, nice video! I think this is literally the first trip report on Air Saint-Pierre!
I've been fascinated by St Pierre for years and just recently discovered your channel - what a weird moment it was when this notification popped up! Awesome stuff
This was a fascinating trip and I greatly enjoyed watching. Thanks for the post.
Another great video Alex - super interesting. You're killing it lately! Thanks
This is such a bizzard place to visit, thank you so much for showing us this part of...France with us Alex!! ❤️
I lived in St. John’s for 4 years and went to St Pierre three times and Miquelon once all by ferry. It’s a very interesting place and definitely feels like you are in Europe. Miquelon has far fewer people (less than 600) and feels much more remote than even St. Pierre does.
Great video, as always!
What an excellent video Alex! Merci from Saint-Pierre !
Still quite a knee cruncher for ya. I flew 40 minutes from Kuala Lumpur to the island of Penang on a 737-400. I'm 5'8 and that was tough
Very nice video Alex, it was great to see the changes since it’s been a while since I’ve been there. I use to work for different companies in St. Pierre and happened to see the old shop where I worked. This building is also the same building that my grandfather worked in as a kid. I have relatives entombed there in the cemetery and we still own property there through my ancestors from France. As for license plates, I have mine on the front of my truck SPM 3762 here in Nova Scotia. Thanks for the video take care.
Thank-you for this video! My Grandfather went to St. Pierre in the 1950s, and he frequently spoke of his trip there. I really want to go, and you have addressed many of my logistical questions about the trip.
Wow! Thanks for making this trip! I heard about this place when I was in school and thought it sounded exotic, and it seems to be.
Nice video. A funny fact: the people of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon are French citizen, so they are EU citizen: they vote for the European parlement and they use the euro... even though their territory is not in the European Union.
Yeah you see the EU symbols in a few places in the video. Quite amazing.
Thanks Alex. Always wanted to see review of this particular airline.
Lovely video! I am flying to CDG from FSP this August so was great to get a preview of the airport and island!
I Ironically just did this over thanksgiving. Amazing little island and awesome to see a video on youtube about it!
Thanks for the fascinating video. St. Pierre is definitely on my bucket list!
This is like you entering mini Europe just 25km form Canada I should visit there one day!!
Thank you for this video. I've always been intrigued by these islands and would love to visit sometime.
Hey Alex: terrific video. I have always known (well since grade five) about SP & M but information on these islands is sketchy at best. Thank you for the tour that made the island appear maritime Canadian but the language and lovely food seemed to make it worthwhile. Thanks for sharing this uniqueness! Cheers, Colin.
Great Video Thanks Alex
Interesting that I have just come across this - I've had my eye on Saint-Pierre & Miquelon for a while now, actually I was looking at the ferry from NF. Thanks for posting this!
SP&M is one of those bucket list places for me. Lucky you getting to visit!
I discovered your channel just yesterday by YT algorithms suggesting to watch the Frankfurt to Whitehorse-video.
And wow, what an amazing production! I am currently binge-watching your channel. The Dash-8 across Canada was great and this video was superior at exploring things completely unknown to a European.
It is a very cool place Alex! Glad you went there... The wine selection is amazing 😉
Beautiful location and video!
Great video, I’ve always been curious about Air Saint-Pierre so I appreciate this, I hope to see you fly PAL someday though to fulfil more of my curiosity
I always enjoy your videos and this one was especially well done.
I've always been curious about this French island off our coast. This was really cool to see!
Thanks for this video! I work at YHZ and help organize the mail that comes from CDG to go on that plane. It's nice to finally see what is on the other end of that flight. /Subscribed
I didn’t know anything about this small island until I watched your video. I have to visit it in the future! Thanks for your videos I love them.
Well, THIS was an eye opener! Never through my school days was there ever any mention of this! That, or I just wasn’t listening….which is highly possible!🤣👴🏻
Great video as always Alex. You certainly stand out far above many others with your calm demeanour, avoiding putting false emphasis and hype into your descriptions, unlike DJs from a hyped up radio station or sports broadcaster!
Greatly appreciated😊🍺🇨🇦
Awesome video as Alex, but glad you showed us a little of the island. France is just a short flight from St John's and that is his plain cool.
Great video Alex.
That looked like a fun little adventure for you.
Great little documentary, with a little airplane spotting...
Thanks a lot for this great video ! I'm a big fan of the ATR 42 🙂
Well I learned something today. Fantastic video. I now have a bucket list place to visit.
Really good video. Thanks for posting. ... Subbed. 👍
This is absolutely amazing! I love small communities like this and I'd love to go see it myself one day
I’d suggest going by boat then! You’ll get the chance to see many small communities on the way to fortune to the ferry terminal! It may be a long drive from St. John’s, but growing up in this area I definitely think it’s worth it
Its been a bucket list item to visit for years, since I saw the islands from the Sydney-Argentia ferry when I was a kid in 1990! Great video!
Merci!
I’ve always wondered about those islands.
I had absolutely no idea this place existed before watching this! This is absolutely well done!
Very neat! Didn't know there was this French territory so close by until last year. Sounds like a quirky and interesting place, we have a travel agreement with Air Saint Pierre so I am definitely planning to visit when it warms up a bit. Also never flown on an ATR before!
Great video, I enjoyed it a lot. Been there a long time ago by ferry from Fortune if I remember correctly. Time to do it from Montréal in the ATR, hopefully in late summer 2023.
I always enjoy your videos very high caliber!!!
Amazing Video ❤❤❤❤❤
After reading about St. Pierre et Miquelon here and there so many times (including the times when the population rebels against the government over very local issues) I finally get to see parts of it in a video!
Cool video!
It's been on my list of places to visit and thinking I'll use points to get over from Vancouver and then paying for the flight from St. John's and then possibly taking the ferry back into Fortune.
Great chance to load up on French wines and cheese!
Great video. Living in Halifax I've always thought of visiting St. Pierre, this helps push me in that direction!
Love the video
Great video, thanks for your review
Although not that common, you can technically still see French cars in the US (and possibly Canada), but they mostly are just temporary visitors from Mexico, where both Peugeot and Renault currently operate. While most of the models that they sell there are identical to those in Europe , some of the models that they sell there aren’t even offered in Europe and vice versa, and the European models tend to be more higher end and have better quality. Plus, it is worth noting that Citroen and DS aren’t even offered in Mexico, so it is nice to see the French cars that are actually sold in France in North America.
The camera fps on takeoff was perfection, literally.
After just seeing your video dashing across Canada to Newfoundland and Labrador, I definitely thought you should visit St. Pierre and Miquelon. Now YT recommends me this video. Nice.
I have worked on cruise ships for 22 years and have been to at least 35 countries, but I need to visit this little gem. Most Canadians think Canada borders only with the USA, but it borders France and Denmark as well.
Imagine telling your Wife or girlfriend, you are taking her To France and you land here.
Excellent video Alex. I've travelled quite a lot in my life but I am native to these little islands which were taken possession of in 1534 by a sailor/navigator/discoverer named Jacques Cartier in the name of the then King of France, François 1er. Really liked your travel report and the images were gorgeous. Yes, the British and the French fought a lot over these little islands. In the end, the Britons left us the choice of either keeping Saint Pierre in the northwest Atlantic or Mauritius in the Indian ocean and because we had been there since a while mainly for fishing cod, the French government decided to stick with Saint Pierre et Miquelon in 1816 ... Funnily, in Mauritius, everybody still speaks French nowadays... Also the runway in Saint Pierre is now 6300 feet long although it was initially planned to be 8,000 feet but things didn't go as initially planned LoL Also, LFVP ( ICAO ) or FSP ( IATA ) is equipped with a high end CAT III ILS ( because of the fog which can get quite intense particularly in Summer ) ...
You can walk from Canada to Denmark across land too.
Saint Pierre looks just so beautiful, it's one of those special places that I would love to visit one day! I too agree on your somewhat unpatriotic remark about the Atr... It's soooo much quieter, comfortable and generally refined and sophisticated than the rugged Dash-8.
Very interesting, thank you!
Very cool video
Great video, and I agree that it is well worth a visit. I first visited as a 12 year old exchange Scout in 1965. The only flights at that time were from Sydney (by Air St. Pierre). The runway on the island was gravel and the aircraft was a DC-3 on busy days (summer tourist season) and an Aztec on slow days. Air St. Pierre was owned by the Gourrah brothers...Sam and Camile...back then. They were two wonderful gentlemen. I can still remember the DC-3 flights.
