Today Laura said, “Russell’s with us in the garden today”. My husband piped up and said “Truth be told, THEY are in the garden with Russell.” I got a good chuckle out of his remark since we are cat people and know who’s really in charge when it comes to cats LOL.

Refilling bird feeders is just the bomb. If you do it just before they’re empty the bird feeders you’ll find the birds’ll move closer & closer to those refilling the feeders until they’ll be on your arms & shoulders. They’ll become friendly becuz they’ll of built up so much trust from their familiarity with the same person/or people regularly feeding them. It becomes exciting every time you feed them & they’re adorable to watch. You can never have too many bird feeders & the closer they are to a window where you can watch them from all the better. Next your going to need binoculars for up close viewing from the dinner table & then the bird books to identify the pretty new birds. They’re always fun to watch & you’re always surprised with the number of birds around that you’ve never seen before. Next, you’ll realize you’ve become a qualified bird watcher from your own backyard that developed just from feeding a few little birds. It becomes a fun hobby for the whole family. This is what happened to me anyway. I wondered if I could feed birds from my window. I started feeding them off of my kitchen dining room area. I had a huge kitchen window in my second floor apartment where I hung two bird feeders for my 2 cats. I hung them becuz it would keep my cats from being board during the day & give them something to do & watch. The inside window had a nice window ledge for them to watch from & boy, when I sat down for dinner watching my cats watching the birds & seeing all the different kinds of birds appearing there at the feeder was so much better than watching tv or a video. I called it “oh d’natural entertainment” & it sure was. The next thing I knew I pulled my watercolor painting stuff from another room placing on the dining room table & there I sat painting my pictures, with my favorite iced coffee, breakfast, lunch or diner, watching my cats watch the birds then watching the birds eating, & watching the cats & I. Other animals became drawn into this picture. Mice & squirrels were attracted to the seeds that fell from the bird feeder & then hawks, peregrine falcons & owls showed up. Elements of the food chain began developing both great & small. Oh my, it was very interesting. My cats were extremely intrigued as was I, with all that came from just the thought of my maybe wanting to feed the birds.

Love feeding our birds. Yes, they get a lot of nourishment from my landscape, but having them flock where I perch inside is a delight!
We recently planted a hedge and, on your recommendation, have been watering them in for root growth protection. Until 2000, our deep freeze Feb.(we are 8b in South Texas!), we didn't worry about broken pipes or freezing roots. We lost 50% of our landscape, and even with wrapped and insulated pipes, ½ our home flooded from broken pipes. We have purchased FreezeMizer faucet protectors and hope we never have a winter like that one again!
Thank you for your great advice for saving our landscape in the future.

I drilled a hole in the bottom of several 5-gallon buckets. When I plant larger shrubs or trees, I can fill as many buckets as needed for the size of the plant and know how much water they are receiving. When the water has slowly drained out of the buckets, I move the buckets to next tree and refill. This also keeps water off the trunk and trees/shrubs.

I had to laugh at your tiny bird feeders! My husband spends his day refilling feeders. We have 3 large ones, 2 bell feeders, 2 special peanut hearts feeders, several suet cakes and a wire circle feeder full of whole peanuts. My husband built a tray for our deck rail where he feeds "his blue jays" along with cardinals, titmouse, downy woodpeckers and others. We have a pair of hairy woodpeckers that are regular visitors along with a pair of northern flickers. We also have a boxwood grouping along our front walk where sparrows hide and then pop up like whack a mole! They love the mulberry tree nearby along with our many berry and crabapples. Gardening for birds and wildlife is so rewarding.

In addition to loose bird seed, suet cakes are great to put out for birds. You can even make your own with things left over from your root cellar or freezer. They are more cost effective and last for days. Love your feeders! Very pretty!
