I think lavender would do really well in that round garden bed with the statue. It is tough and would bring a beautiful burst if colour ,along with that romantic feel🤔💜😊
I so love a good green, growth declutter🤩😍 There is something so extremely satisfying from going to A LOT of vegetation... to none.. or very little after a BIG cleanup 😘😜
This video reminds me that I've been making the right decisions with my garden by keeping annuals and perennials to a minimum. I love my conifers and evergreens and I don't mind deciduous shrubs. No such thing as a maintenance free garden but I'll do what I can to keep it as low as possible so that I can sit back, relax and enjoy it! I already have a full time job.
Whenever I think I don’t have the heart to remove and cut back my garden plants, I just watch one of your fall clean up videos and I get inspired to run out and get it done as soon as the video is over. It always looks so much better. Thank you!
I like to do the majority of my cleanup in fall also. I like to see it neat and tidy through the winter. I feel like I’ve put my gardens to bed while I have my winters rest and I’m not thinking about the mess and all the work I have in the spring. Just makes me feel better❣️
Yep I used to do spring clean up but our huge norway maples drop so many leaves that it makes a mess for spring. We mow them into crumbs, mix with grass cuttings and mushroom compost, and wait all winter for our new pile of compost dirt to happen. Lot of work but so worth it! Happy weekend people!
I would have to agree. 😱😥 Our daughter had looked into buying a double pink weeping cherry and found out how expensive they are. Holy cow the same size tree would be over $300 here in PA.
Everytime you’ve shown the area with the pallet walkway, since you’ve started all of the alterations to that area, I am just amazed at how small that part of the garden really is. When everything was intact, it seemed like such a bigger space, yet intimate, like a secret pathway. This gives me inspiration for my garden. I’m really enjoying this view into how an established garden can be re-tooled.
The picture that hosts this video is absolutely gorgeous. With the Hartley in the background and the circular garden in the forefront would make a fabulous print to frame and put on your wll. I just love your videos!!!Mary Ballantyne
I can’t lie, I wanted to cry when you cut down the weeping cherry tree. I’m babying mine to grow. I understand about planting in the wrong spot though. This year I put in a flower bed around my weeping cherry tree with some miniature hydrangeas and other small shrubs. I thought about planting some bulbs in the flower bed but I’m to late I fear. Thank you for taking us along. Love from SE Ohio.
Laura, you are Wonder Woman. Garden clean up isn't a favorite thing to do in anyone's garden. You take a project on and WOW what a transformation. You're inspiring. Thank you!
Wow! When you said you “never liked (the weeping tree) anyway I thought you might relocate it to the back 40! But NO! Ya took a power tool to it and ended it.🤣🤣🤣
I love that you show how much work really goes into gardening and creating and upkeep of beautiful spaces like yours. I get frustrated that my body doesn’t cooperate and allow me to do as much as I could when I was your age. I like fall cleanup the best to keep rodents from having nesting spots as well as to have a nice fresh start in the spring. This summer was so hot and hard to be outside that our yard totally got away from us and portions turned into jungles. Thankfully I found a wonderfully hardworking family of landscapers who managed to get it all cleaned up and “buttoned up” as you say yesterday even with some snow on the ground in places. They accomplished in a day what would have taken us about five days. What a blessing! It made me think of you and how you say Paul and Bethany are such a blessing to have. 😊♥️
Good morning Laura! Love seeing Russell following around in the background. He hears your voice and comes running.. Cheddar is his own independent self. We can tell both are well loved and taken care of. Love to get my yard all cleaned up AFTER all the leaves have fallen..it gives me a sense of calm. Have a great weekend and see you Sunday for highlights!! Hugs from N.C..❤️
Oh Laura, thank you, thank you for demonstrating to me that change can be embraced despite my natural behavior of always desiring to keep things as status quo. You have mentioned you do not search for change but you sure do a wonderful job at transitioning your garden spaces. Perhaps this is with Aaron’s nudging (push??😅) but you have been such an encouragement for me to witness how planting something in one place doesn’t mean it will always need to remain in that place for a lifetime - I’m referring to the weeping cherry tree, here!! You guys are such a wonderful team, continually balancing life and allowing us all to come along and learn with and from you. ❤
I saw your Instagram photo of Cheddar and he is looking gorgeous. I am also thankful for my daily Russell fix. He puts a smile on my face every day. It was so good to hear you are giving the trunk from the cherry tree to a woodworker. As a crafter, my eyes lit up when I saw it and imagined the possibilities. You guys are the best and thank you for the great videos.
Good thing you have young knees! 😊 And I need a Mule and a trailer!! Fun to watch you do cleanup. Weather here in Missouri is still mild so I gotta get out there! 😊
Fall cleanup is very satisfying to me. I love to have everything done and buttoned up by the holidays. I have large natural areas for habitat but love to have my beds and lawn nice & tidy.
Yes, I actually did sigh with relief with your chicken coop cleanup, especially seeing the borage go! It all looks much better. And I'm so glad you went back and showed the oakleaf hydrangeas. When you first walked past them when you were headed to the Versailles garden, I thought, "Ohhh! I wish she'd stop and show those." because I just love their autumn colors, and then you did! Yea!
Thank you for this advice. I am 70 years old and I clean thing out as I have time and most of the cleanup in do in the Fall because I have planting to do in the spring. I live in the country and there are many spaces that can be foraged and lived in by animals and insects.
I’m with you on the weeping cherry, they’re only pretty while in bloom and then they just look weird! I love how things are turning out, you’re so good at garden design 😀🌸🍃🌻
I have always like the ratio of talk to work, to fast forward work, to final project viewing. And that is not to underestimate the cat and kid appearances. Those additions are delightful. Also we viewers get a real sense of knowing you and your family.
When you cut the tree and I saw the straight trunk I thought that you should take that to the garden center to use in your decorations. But giving it to Ken to make into something beautiful is even better!
I’m not a fan of weeping cherries either. They always look messy and sick to me. I think it would be pretty to use the tall skinny junipers you talked about to line the curve of the pallet walkway to create some mystery and separation of the formal and cottage gardens of the Hartley and chicken coop. Walking that path and having it open up to the gorgeous symmetry of those 4 beds would be a sight! But you’re the expert! I’m sure it will be lovely whatever you decide to do! Have a great weekend everybody!!
When Laura says her plants were all fine when she cut them back in the fall, please remember that she lives in the high desert. It’s extremely dry there. When you cut a plant back in fall you’re removing its protection from snow and moisture. It’s moisture getting into the crown of the plant that will kill it. For people in areas that have wet, cold winters, it’s even more important to save your cleanup for the spring. As far as insects overwintering, the goal of a garden is to have a balanced ecosystem. That means you will have some “bad” insects, but they don’t get out of control, because you encourage beneficial insects, birds, and your soil is healthy.
I agree with you except for herbaceous perennials. They need to be cut back in autumn. They do NOT die back gracefully. They melt into a pile of mush (hemerocallis, hostas, etc.).
The Sure Fire begonia we’re possibly my favorite this year in your garden. Every time I saw them in the background of videos they always looked great. Perfect pop of color and size under the maple trees on the west side.
I’ve been going back and looking at videos of garden answer six years ago trying to go back to the first one they’re very interesting and great seeing you grow your property everybody have a great weekend 💗🙏🏻💗
I was searching for one about white tulips ,I couldn't find it so I Google it and there it was around four years ago ,didn't know it was that long, time flies
I have watched you for years now and remember how sweet that pallet path is and I'm so happy you will be keeping it..I know you will change it's route but I love to see it, it was always a lovely spot to go through in your monthly updates on the garden, like a secret little spot to me...
Always love learning so much from my Mentor with the Mostest! Laura you inspire, teach, share your knowledge and wonderful enthusiam in every aspect of gardening, landscaping, hard scaping, etc.etc. And as I loyally follow for years, I just want to take a moment to thank you dearly for all! You make me get out there and Clean up, Prune up at appropriate times, and most importantly remove what has failed, even trees, or eyesore plants I really don't like but previous owners may have. You give us our wings to grasp our home areas and make them ours! Thank you always for your inspiration.
Wow!! What a difference. Love how open it is. I'm sure the chickens love the openess and light. Everything looks so clean and tidy. Glad to hear Cheddar is ok. Russell is so dedicated to you. Beautiful cats you have. ❤️
Have you considered planting Vinca annuals in the quadrant where the Impatiens were? They can handle the hot afternoon sun and don't need much watering. I'm in 7a and mine did so well this season. Love your channel!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for stating what I feel is obvious, about cleaning up the garden in the Fall. I live in an area ( Maine) that has a huge issue with Deer ticks ( that carry 4 different viruses, one of which is fatal!). Plus we have 2 small dogs that run round the yard. The deer ticks LOVE to hang out in the garden debris all winter. It is impracticable to have to check both dogs each time they come in from playing in the yard, each day. Since we border a Natural Wildlife area, I feel the beneficial insects can live in the woods there, versus my yard. During the growing season, I grow a LOT of pollinator friendly plants. However people make me feel guilty for doing my Fall clean up, but it is the most sensible things for us. Thank you Laura.
After I finish watching this, I’m headed out to pull weeds along my front fence line. It was already at the top of my list for today but you have certainly inspired me to get going. Of all the things you removed, it’s the Surefire Begonias I will miss the most!
Oh wow Laura, you are so amazing with your cleanups that you do in your beautiful garden. I have to be honest I really hate aphids, they are such an awful bug, I remember I got some on one of my house plants and I took it outside and hosed it down and the plant came back but I still don't like those at all. I also am not that crazy about all of the leaves we have to deal with when fall hits. I also really like how that area around the chicken coop is looking, you did so much cleanup there, and it was sad to see that tree have to come down but seeing what you saved and your friend making something out of it will be so wonderful to have and always remember that tree. It is also so nice to see Russell and I have always wondered how Cheddar was doing because I hardly ever see him as much as we do Russell. Thanks for a great video that I had a lot of fun watching and you always give me so much inspiration to get busy and clean up my own tiny garden before the snow hits. Have a great rest of your weekend, sending love and hugs, bye!! 😂🤗😻💜❣💞
Just a note, thank you for mentioning that leaving plants can harbor beneficial insects and pollinators as well as not beneficial insects. We as gardeners need to have discernment to that fact, as to have beautiful, and successful gardens. I have loved seeing the transformation of this space! It is beautiful!
What a refreshing difference around the chicken coop--definite sigh of relief. Another great vignette to enjoy from the Hartley, highlighting the climbing roses. Great spot to add more roses. More paths, brick, and gravel? I worry that the amazing form of the new quadrants will be diluted, if not lost. Perhaps just extending the quadrant path with a bench at the end would be better than another path and bump out? Hoping it's mirrored on the other side. K.I.S.S. Phlox are gorgeous!
So glad to see the chicken coop again! Yes, I did sigh in relief! Especially with all the finishing work around the Hartly. Looks so much better! Now it's my turn in the garden. Inspired once again!
Aaron, you’re right! I just watched the recap video where you weren’t feeling well and mentioned there’s probably people out there that hate to see you in the video. (I’m getting caught up on videos) I have to admit that was me. And I said exactly what you said, “I didn’t sign up for this!” But I “pushed through” because I love Laura. Well now I can’t imagine not seeing you all the time. I LOVE when you pop in or are in the whole video. You seem to have such a calming presence and are such a joy to listen to. You also have wisdom to share! I especially love watching y’all work together. It’s just so sweet and warms my heart. So thanks for getting over the uncomfortable in front of the camera feeling. We get the blessing from it. 💕
Greetings, Laura, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸 I'm wearing an Achilles boot for the next few weeks to however long it takes for healing. I'm looking out at my garden and making a list. But, for now, I'm watching you work like the Everready Bunny! Happy Gardening Everyone 👩🌾👍💓
@@ozarkview928 thanks Ozark View, I've had a Degenerative Achilles since 2000 on the left foot. It took about 9 months of treatment. Now I'm 72 and I'm worried it's going to be a really long process. But thank you for caring. I'm still making videos and trying to film inside on even surfaces. Back in 2000 I had 14 acres and was working like Laura. 👍
I moved to a new home last year and inherited two huge hibiscus plants. When and how much should I cut them back? Can they be propagated? My daughter and I visited the store in October (we live in Boise) and met your Mom and thoroughly enjoyed looking through the store! We plan to come back to see your beautiful Christmas display soon :)
📝 I would suggest keeping a list of all your plants that need to be covered when it freezes. I keep lists for everything. It makes it so much easier than trying to remember everything and then beating yourself up if you forgot something.
I agree. After I'd dug up a few of my treasured plants, I decided to keep a list which developed over time into a catalog/journal for every year of my garden. Fun to look back at them and see the changes. Great winter project to tweak it and make a list of plans for the next season.
LOVE the Westside gardens. Wasn't it 5 minutes ago we were watching you plant up the surefires? Seasons change and that's why we love gardens ...and Laura.
Laura it's ok to pull the pallet walk way. With all the new spaces you are creating there will be another perfect place for it. Maybe use it in kids secret garden or by the new pond. Change is hard but you can do it 😃
Hi Laura and Aaron! The area around the chicken coop looks so much better now. I do hope you'll keep the pallet walkway there. I always enjoy seeing it. I was sorry to see you cut the cherry tree down. I was hoping you would find a new home, or space, for it. I hope you'll show us what Ken does with the trunk. Thank you so much for sharing!
I thought, "Oh my goodness, Laura just cut down my favorite and expensive Snow Fountain cherry tree." But you're right. It didn't suit that space at all. It's branches were all unruly and created chaos instead of the beauty they bring to my boring front yard. It just goes to show that not every space is right for every plant.
Todays video is a hard ah ha moment for me!!! I have a weeping Higgin cherry tree that was an anniversary gift from my hubby 20yrs ago. I’ve loved it for years but it’s been a struggle the last 3-5yrs. She looks terrible now but I just don’t know how I can cut down a gift from the heart. I do have a Weeping Norway that he bought at the same time that is amazing so all won’t be lost! Thank you for teaching us that it’s ok to get rid of plants and trees that just don’t work any longer!
i felt like crying seeing a beautiful cherry tree cut down. Makes me feel sad when a plant has survived and grown and being killed for its' effort. The garden looks really fresh and tidy now. You have worked hard! :-) x
Dumb question, what's the cage thing that Laura cleaned up around? maybe she said but I didnt catch it. This video looks like what I need to do very soon in my gardens, first frost is expected next week
LOL… it’s like washing a tiny spot on the kitchen ceiling! Now that you have the Hartley grounds all dressed up, the chicken coop plants need help! It just never ends. LOVE your channel! You always inspire me!
Wow looks better!! Love watching you clean up at the end of season. I have learnd so much by watching how you trim down your greens & plants when a season is over.
Yay that your editor can use that cherry for something beautiful! It was so Zen watching you clean out the area, and inspired me to clean up some wiley perennials once our snow melts. Thank you for sharing your marvelous work!
Here in western Oregon its POURING rain. And of course I left some things to enjoy awhile. They may get pretty ugly before its dry enough to clean them up! But much too hard to pull them when they are still VERY beautiful right before the rains start!
We've had cold, rainy weather the last few weeks topped off with our first snow today so my fall gardening is done. Since I can't work in my garden anymore it was especially satisfying to watch you work in yours. Everything is looking so good. Love the new Hartley area planting!
Good morning fellow Garden Answer fans. ❤️❤️❤️
Good morning to you! Happy Friday!!!!
Good morning!
Mornin’
Morning😊
Good morning
Russell is such a good kitty.....coming to you when you call him. You guys take such good care of him.
Love cleaning up spaces like this! How satisfying 😊
Whenever I think I don’t have the heart to remove and cut back my garden plants, I just watch one of your fall clean up videos and I get inspired to run out and get it done as soon as the video is over. It always looks so much better. Thank you!
👋I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship where are you from?
Loved the Russell/Cheddar update. It’s so sweet that Russell is so loyal and follows you everywhere.
ME TOO!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
He never misses a video appearance.
I like to do the majority of my cleanup in fall also. I like to see it neat and tidy through the winter. I feel like I’ve put my gardens to bed while I have my winters rest and I’m not thinking about the mess and all the work I have in the spring. Just makes me feel better❣️
Same here Toinette! I've been cleaning up my garden getting it ready for winter. It's so satisfying seeing it all tidy up.
Yes I agree! I do the same.
Same here. I try to leave some things, but I have a lot of transplanting in the spring on my little cut flower farm.
Do very little fall cleanup, have to admit I am more motivated in the spring!
The chicken coop area looks great and the chickens will appreciate all the sunlight. Clean up always brings a sigh of relief!
Chickens do love their sun baths!
That bed looks great cleaned up.
I wanted to cry when the weeping cherry was cut. It was SO adorable with the coop.
I would have to agree. 😱😥 Our daughter had looked into buying a double pink weeping cherry and found out how expensive they are. Holy cow the same size tree would be over $300 here in PA.

That major clean-up really makes the gardens look so tidy!
The picture that hosts this video is absolutely gorgeous. With the Hartley in the background and the circular garden in the forefront would make a fabulous print to frame and put on your wll. I just love your videos!!!Mary Ballantyne
Laura - I love your pruning / cleanup videos. Something so satisfying seeing gardens cleaned up with airflow. 👏👏
👋I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship where are you from?
Ooo I would love to see bulbs in the area with the four cone shaped hedge area. I enjoy watching the clean up. It looks great!
You are a “cleaning beast”! 😂. The coop area looks great! It’s like it has been reborn again till it all starts to grow back in the spring.
I can’t lie, I wanted to cry when you cut down the weeping cherry tree. I’m babying mine to grow. I understand about planting in the wrong spot though. We have watched you do a cleanup before, but this was the most satisfying cleanup of all. Well done.
Great job gal thanks for sharing
Wow! I mean... WOW!!! That kind of clean out gets me so excited! It looks so fresh & ready for your next vision.
Laura, you are Wonder Woman. Garden clean up isn't a favorite thing to do in anyone's garden. You take a project on and WOW what a transformation. You're inspiring. Thank you!
I love watching Russell “help” you with the garden. Have you considered a video of just the cats as they explore the garden? It would be so cute!
Strap on a go-pro? Cat-cam!
Wow! When you said you “never liked (the weeping tree) anyway I thought you might relocate it to the back 40! But NO! Ya took a power tool to it and ended it.🤣🤣🤣
That is such a great idea I would love to see that as well.
There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing a cleaned up flower bed! Well done Laura!! 👏🏻❤️🌱

Another fun/amazing/inspiring GARDEN ANSWER video!

Love how one day you say we prob won't get to it yet, then the next day it's "forward march". Love it!! You are a hard worker.
I for one sure was sad to see that beautiful cherry tree chopped down. The Hartley and brick beds are beautiful.
Goes to show editing is as important as planting when it comes to gardening! Thanks for the reminder, Laura!
Guten Tag, wundervolle Erklärungen .Es macht so viel Spaß Dir zuzuschauen...jetzt bin ich auch radikaler in meinem Garten...Dankeschön...L.G.Anja
Feels good to get that fall cleanup wrapped up. Looking good!

Clean slate! Looks better.
I once had a sweet cat that would follow behind us when we walked the dog in our neighborhood, very social like Russell❤

The Sure Fire begonia we’re possibly my favorite this year in your garden. Every time I saw them in the background of videos they always looked great. Perfect pop of color and size under the maple trees on the west side.

Hello my beloved Garden Answer Fam
I find it so satisfying to watch you clean up in fall. Namaste
So Happy to see Russel and Beverly! Tell Cheddar we love him. So nice to see the throwback to calmer times.
Complete inspiration for pulling all my annuals and cutting back so much. So wish I had a place to dump. What a difference.
Just a note, thank you for mentioning that leaving plants can harbor beneficial insects and pollinators as well as not beneficial insects. We as gardeners need to have discernment to that fact, as to have beautiful, and successful gardens. I have loved seeing the transformation of this space! It is beautiful!
woah! Laura going in for blood on that weeping cherry!
No one get mad at her. It's her garden and her choice. Great job on cleaning up the space!
I have a weeping cherry, it has flowers for 4 days in spring. I really don't like it. Laura tells us, if it doesn't make you happy get rid of it.
@@susanoberski8183 exactly! My husband has watched me rip physically ok plants that I find ugly as heck especially because they spread so quickly
Nice !
Awesome job on the clean up around the coop! The ladies now have a beautiful view of the Hartley 🙌🏼💕
So satisfying to see garden beds cleaned up. I have a few hostas to cut back, and then I am done too, now that I am inspired by Laura.
👋I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship where are you from?
I luuuv when you say, 'but, who cares'. EXACTLY! We work with what have most of the time, and it'll be just fine.
Greetings, Laura, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸
I'm wearing an Achilles boot for the next few weeks to however long it takes for healing. I'm looking out at my garden and making a list. But, for now, I'm watching you work like the Everready Bunny!
Happy Gardening Everyone 👩🌾👍💓
Oh I’ve had that annoying Achilles already ! Hope it heals quickly for you .
I can not believe how hard you work!!!!!! You are amazing!
Massive clean-up!!! Awesome!! 💕 Maybe the pondless waterfall can make a comeback near the chicken coop 🫶🏻👍🏻
hello, does anyone like the weeping cherry trees ? I was going to get one, was it not blooming ?
I moved to a new home last year and inherited two huge hibiscus plants. When and how much should I cut them back? Can they be propagated? My daughter and I visited the store in October (we live in Boise) and met your Mom and thoroughly enjoyed looking through the store! We plan to come back to see your beautiful Christmas display soon :)
I’ve never really considered begonias but you have me sold on those sure fires. What a work horse!
Or, stop planting too many things that are tender in your zone.
Those chickens are have it made!
It is so neat and tidy now. I love the shots of your kitties.
How do you dispose of the aphid infested plants? Haul to the dump, make a burn pile
Dumb question, what's the cage thing that Laura cleaned up around? maybe she said but I didnt catch it. This video looks like what I need to do very soon in my gardens, first frost is expected next week
Creating gardens is an evolved process. Ideas and plans can always be changed. As this video shows, You are the master!
But much too hard to pull them when they are still VERY beautiful right before the rains start!
who is here like me checking in for the uploads lol . i need my GA fix
Use the tree trunk for your bird house!!
Yes, that looks so much better. This is going to be such a great space.
👋I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship where are you from?
We've had cold, rainy weather the last few weeks topped off with our first snow today so my fall gardening is done. Since I can't work in my garden anymore it was especially satisfying to watch you work in yours. Everything is looking so good. Love the new Hartley area planting!
