Even though I know that Apple would probably never do this, because it would step on the toes of their laptop lines, I wish Apple would design a “Desktop Mode” into iOS. The devices that run iOS these days are so much more capable than what iOS allows them to do. The chip in my iPhone is more powerful than the one in my 2017 Macbook Pro. Yet I can’t run full desktop apps on my iPhone when connected to an external monitor? Would be really nice if I could just select “Desktop Mode” and iOS essentially turns into MacOS. Maybe some day it will happen once trends force Apple to do it, but I feel like it’s one of those things that hyper-capitalist practices will deprive us of for as long as possible. Apple doesn’t want to give you a laptop in your phone, because then it wouldn’t sell as many laptops. Same reason the iPads, even iPad Pros, are still limited by iPadOS, despite having literally the same chip as the M1 Macbooks now. For all the nice things we’re allowed to have these days… we still can’t have the REALLY nice things. 😩

Imagine sony with the vita, looked almost as good as the ps3 in graphics, had more built in chat and messaging systems, and games were cheaper. That system would have stripped the ps3 of sales and may have killed the ps4 as handheld gaming is huge in asia. A all in one would have been too much. Nintendo did it and became the biggest thing in asia with the switch.... Now look at big players like Apple. When this happens the only way for them to make money will be to OS version lock people to make them upgrade as I had to do with my macbook. Ok, I was assuming this monitor was expensive, which would make this concept a waste of time and money, since an iPad would be more portable (because of its battery), more affordable and easy to use. But I was wrong since this type of monitors cost around 150$ and has bigger screens than an iPad, and there’s a plethora of models to choose from (although if you have an iPad already maybe this is an unnecessary gadget). Thanks man, I appreciate the kind words. This is definitely not a replacement of an iPad. But you're right there, relatively inexpensive. And you can hook him up to much more than iOS devices. So they're pretty versatile. But most of all, this was just a fun Little experiment :)
This is such a genius idea! A game changer for photographers, graphic designers, video editors and more! I bet this'd work so well for thumbnails!😅 Thanks for the awesome idea Patrick!
That’s something Apple doesn’t allow us to do. Even iPads can’t do that. I guess they are trying to keep that separation between their devices and make sure you don’t replace one with the other.
@@PatrickRambles Thanks for yr feedback. How about a regular computer monitor? I read you can use an Apple Lightning adapter and HDMI cable to hook up an iPhone to a monitor.
Does it work with a lightning to Hdmi and then hdmi to usb-c to transfer picture I had a monitor like this from a different company that I got to work with the iPhone minus the touchscreen if I used my Lighting Av then hdmi to usb-c and depending on power of the charger if you plugged it into the av adapter it would power the monitor by residual current going back through the HDMI into the monitor
Hello Patrick. Thanks for this VDO. But at this moment I think iOS 14.6 does not allow iPhone to Bluetooth connect with any mouse or trackpad., even Apple Magic Trackpad.
I LOVE this concept, but could I run TurboTax or QuickBooks from a setup like this (I have an iPhone 11). I like to catch up on my business stuff when traveling and would rather pack a small monitor, keyboard & mouse vs a laptop, because I hate using laptop keyboards. Before someone says "just get used to it and use a laptop ya dummy!", I should emphasize that when I'm working on financials, I pretty much have to have a full sized keyboard with a proper numeric keypad; laptop keyboards, even the bigger ones, don't cut it for this type of work.
Hey there! This was a fun experiment more than anything else. A glimpse at what COULD be. Apple unfortunately doesn't seem to have any ambitions in this direction, so view this as an interesting workaround, rather than an actual business solution.
@@PatrickRambles thank you for responding. So, let me get this straight. I can get the mirrored image from my iPhone to the monitor with a lightening to usb-c cable. Then power the monitor.
@@PatrickRambles that’s too bad. I was hoping to connect my iPhone to this monitor with the lightening to usb-c it came with. No dongle needed. Thanks for clarifying.
Does iOS have support for screen extension, as opposed to screen sharing? For example, say, can I have a video playing on the external display while taking a note on OneNote on the iPad?
Hi Patrick. I have some old iPhones like 5, 5c and 5s etc but they’re all broken. I’m wondering if the ones that aren’t completely ruined, would I be able to hook them up to a monitor (similar to this) and view the phone on the monitor?
Hey Ryan, Vertical mode works well when paired with a computer. Withe the phone, landscape works better. Here is a link to the smartphone clamp I used amzn.to/37YEuEV but you can get much cheaper ones on Amazon too.
Thanks for your video! it was a very good explanation. do you know if Garage band one of the apps that apple optimized for external monitor such as UA-cam and Netflix?
Hi Patrick, I have a question about the original iphone 11/12 8pin to usb-c cable, can it be connected directly to this portable monitor and display the content of the iPhone
Hi Patrick I could setup the mouse working on the iPhone 12 but it wouldn’t show on the external monitor in shiftscreen app. Were u able to see the mouse cursor on the external monitor. I am using a non apple lightning to hdmi adapter to a monitor screen. Please advise
Great video. Thank you so much ! Would this work with any other monitor ? Eg A very recent dell monitor I have with hdmi and usbc ports ? Would? I just need to purchase the cables tht u show in your video?? Would really appreciate a response 🙏🏽
Amazing future. Can you tell about the battery of your phone with this experience since I think the battery technology still be the barrier for using the phone as a PC?
Hey man. The lighting to HDMI adapter has a pass through lightning connector. So you can keep your phone I powered whilst using it like this. No battery issues :)
Yes. And thanks a lot for making this unique video. I Really mean it ❤️. I wish it has it's won battery and can work wirelessly over anything like desktop laptop phone over same wifi. And it's slimmer like surface duo or iPad pro.
Hi Patrict, I trying to use iphone XS max & Lenovo M14T protable monitor, both connected thru cable thunderbolt to USB-C, but not works. Any advice? thanks.
Hey man. You mean on the external monitor? No... It's a fun experiment to see the potential of the iPhone but none of the apps are actually optimized to be used like that. Unfortunately it's still a workaround.
I get a playback error with that lightning/HDMI set up on some apps. The main thing I bought it for was to watch ESPN+ using my phone data on a bigger screen but that playback error prevents me from doing so 😢
Amazing video, you are very brave to do this when there are almost no videos tackling the iphone desktop issue but we need influencers to encourage apple to do it, I'm subscribing because of this video
@@PatrickRambles the value for me is I travel to my service network. I have to present reports. I can use my iPad and spin the monitor around for them to view the data. I do not need to carry a screen and projector any more. Thanks for the great videos.
Thanks for a good video. I have tried to connect my iPhone 11 to a screen and it works nice, but My Bluetooth mouse seemed to have a little latency. Do you experience that too? It could be that my mouse is old and cheap and I need to get anew one what mouse do you use?
I tried connecting my Bluetooth mouse to my iphone and it is not bad at all, it is not mega fast like on my notebook, but usable and precise. On my Samsung S20 it is definitely faster, even set on 60hz.
What’s the smallest external monitor for iPhone? I’m looking for something for photography, almost like how some cameras have a flip out screen. Thank you! 🙂
Does it work in portrait mode? Every time you had the phone in portrait it looked like the monitor stayed in landscape and the phone only took up a quarter of the screen!
If you turn the phone to portrait, the screen will turn to portrait. But since the monitor itself remains in landscape mode on the desk, of course you're going to see black bars, like on any other monitor. It's just a different resolution.
@@PatrickRambles please let me know. I’d love to buy one that works in portrait as I need a fold back monitor for Instagram live. I’m going live using Ecamm and Instafeed, but to see the real-time comments I use a phone which is pretty small and hard to read!
Great idea. I'm testing it tomorrow with the S21 Ultra (Samsung Dex and touch screen on that thing are pretty awesome). I'll hook up the iPhone while I'm at it.
This is great! However when I tried to use my bluetooth mouse on shift screen (on iphone) I could not see my curser and could not navigate pages. Does anyone know away around this?
Thanks for your @@PatrickRambles however I have not managed to find away to adjust the settings in neither the shiftscreen app nor in the accessibility settings in Iphone. Unfortunately cannot find any settings that reference the 'cursor' that are relevant to the problem at hand. Have inquired with app developer. Thanks.
Jamie Johnstone could u get the mouse cursor in shiftscreen to appear. I can only see it in the iPhone 12 screens but not able to use it in shiftscreen and see it on the external monitor
Great video! How about charging your iphone at the same time? I think maybe the only way is to use a wireless charger like MagSafe right? Also, of course you can connect desktop-type speakers to this monitor while your iphone's connect via HDMI? Thanks :))
It does not have a dex mode or stylus or usbc mode like the Samsung series and the huge notch is no match for Samsung display. Samsung also works with mice and tracpads seamlessly in its windowed mode and you can use usbc docks and accessories and you have a SD card slot for extra capacity and backup. Not to mention compatibility with the nexbook laptop accessory for usbc smart phones. That gives you a fully functioning laptop using your phone as the brains. Not to mention Sony's LDAC and Qualcomm's APTXHD hires wireless Bluetooth is aboard for the best sound quality. Did I mention 120hz screen to play fast 3d games at 120hz. And full monitor support...the Apple will win in geekbench synthetic benchmarks of course, until it quickly thermal throttles. Both are great, but Apple is letting the iPad hold back the iPhone, with features the iPhone should have.
By the time you get the keyboard, mouse, AV adapter, monitor, cables, stand, battery pack, clam, Shiftscreen, etc, you might as well just get a cheap Chromebook and call it a day.

Hi, why can't I use my regular laptop as a monitor for my iPhone? I see plenty of videos showing how to do the opposite.
Does this work on iPhone xs max too?
Because I’m going to swap my iphone with my friend’s Samsung s10+ exynos.
Should work on any iPhone, as long as it take the adapter. The Samsung has DEX on board which is obviously superior to any of this :)
Can I use other way around , I want to use my IPhone as mirror monitor from my mac book ? Is it passible to do that ?
Nope.
@ disappointed same like iPhones can’t play flac files lol
Hello Patrick. Thanks for this VDO. But at this moment I think iOS 14.6 does not allow iPhone to Bluetooth connect with any mouse or trackpad., even Apple Magic Trackpad.
Hi there! Sure it does :) you see me do it in the video
@@PatrickRambles Did you use 3rd party mouse or Apple’s Magic Mouse 2 or Magic Trackpad 2 ??
I am unable to connect iPhone with Magic Trackpad 2
Which version of ios are you on.

Thanks man! Don't worry, I'll always give you my honest opinions.
Can you plug the lightening to usb-c cable directly and then power the screen with its own power supply?
You can.
@@PatrickRambles thank you for responding. So, let me get this straight. I can get the mirrored image from my iPhone to the monitor with a lightening to usb-c cable. Then power the monitor.
Yeah with a lightning dongle. I'd recommend the official apple one. I've got some off brand ones that didn't work.
@@PatrickRambles that’s too bad. I was hoping to connect my iPhone to this monitor with the lightening to usb-c it came with. No dongle needed. Thanks for clarifying.
Ah got you. The lightning cable doesn't transfer that kind of data.
Does iOS have support for screen extension, as opposed to screen sharing? For example, say, can I have a video playing on the external display while taking a note on OneNote on the iPad?
iPadOS does, I don't think IOS does. But you can get a lot more functionality out of it by using the shiftscreen app.
Hi Patrick. I have some old iPhones like 5, 5c and 5s etc but they’re all broken. I’m wondering if the ones that aren’t completely ruined, would I be able to hook them up to a monitor (similar to this) and view the phone on the monitor?
How will would it work in vertical mode? Also, where did you get the piece that physically holds the iPhone when it’s attached to the desktop clamp?
Hey Ryan, Vertical mode works well when paired with a computer. Withe the phone, landscape works better. Here is a link to the smartphone clamp I used amzn.to/37YEuEV but you can get much cheaper ones on Amazon too.
Hello Sir, my biggest concern is if this setup support wired keyboard/mouse?
With the right dongle.
Thanks for your video! it was a very good explanation. do you know if Garage band one of the apps that apple optimized for external monitor such as UA-cam and Netflix?
Hey thanks! No I don't think so, it's just the media apps.
Hi Patrick, I have a question about the original iphone 11/12 8pin to usb-c cable, can it be connected directly to this portable monitor and display the content of the iPhone
Hey Marcin! I don't think it will be able to transfer image and audio without some kind of adapter.
@@PatrickRambles Thank you for your quick reply, Regards.
Any time.
Hi Patrick I could setup the mouse working on the iPhone 12 but it wouldn’t show on the external monitor in shiftscreen app. Were u able to see the mouse cursor on the external monitor. I am using a non apple lightning to hdmi adapter to a monitor screen. Please advise
Hey man, it isn't working for me anymore either. Maybe it's a bug..
@@PatrickRambles I see. Ok maybe next update. Great videos
Great review, thank you. Does iPhone support mouse? It seems that you are using it but I didn´t notice cursor. Thank you
Thank you! Yes it does. You can go into accessibility settings to change the cursor.
Great video. Thank you so much ! Would this work with any other monitor ? Eg A very recent dell monitor I have with hdmi and usbc ports ? Would? I just need to purchase the cables tht u show in your video?? Would really appreciate a response 🙏🏽
Hey! Yep should work fine.
@@PatrickRambles Thank u so much for replying !! You just gained a new subscriber !
@@nanciemadden appreciated!
Please advice how can I delete pictures from Apple Watch 3.
Hey man, I don't own an Apple watch, so not sure!
@@PatrickRambles ok bro thanks
VERY VERY VERY GREAT WORK DUDE. I SO MUCH APPRICIATED IT !!!!!. PLEASE MAKE ALSO A VIDEO LIKE THIS FOR IPAD. THANK YOU. GOOD WORK MEN!!!
Thank you 😊😊
Amazing future. Can you tell about the battery of your phone with this experience since I think the battery technology still be the barrier for using the phone as a PC?
Hey man. The lighting to HDMI adapter has a pass through lightning connector. So you can keep your phone I powered whilst using it like this. No battery issues :)
@@PatrickRambles Thanks. I missed this info.
No worries :) thanks for the comment
I would definitely buy it if it works wirelessly over WiFi 6.
The monitor?
Yes. And thanks a lot for making this unique video. I Really mean it ❤️. I wish it has it's won battery and can work wirelessly over anything like desktop laptop phone over same wifi. And it's slimmer like surface duo or iPad pro.
That would be awesome. And thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it.
Does the battery of the iphone get charged while you're using it in this setup?
If you hook up a lightning cable to the adapter
Do you know if I can get external touchscreens?
ua-cam.com/video/FfhyqbAlPdY/v-deo.html
I might get this monitor
It's very nice.
Can i do this with my IPhone 10S?
Hey Simen! Sure. All you need is the lightning to HDMI adapter.
Hi Patrict,
I trying to use iphone XS max & Lenovo M14T protable monitor, both connected thru cable thunderbolt to USB-C, but not works.
Any advice? thanks.
Hi Dimas! unfortunately the lighting cable doesn't translate a video signal. You need the lightning to HDMI adapter for it to work.
@@PatrickRambles Thanks
Is there any wireless HDMI tech?
I think there is yes but I don't know how well that would work here. Those things are expensive too.
I’ll definitely check out shift screen
Makes it more desktop-like
@@PatrickRambles yeah. It costs money tho😢 lol
Not much though.
@@PatrickRambles yeah. Is there a code that u can use so that I can support u?
Thanks very much for considering to do that! Unfortunately there's no code.
Please, how is Lumafusion on this? Does the interface appear equal to Ipad's?
Hey man. You mean on the external monitor? No... It's a fun experiment to see the potential of the iPhone but none of the apps are actually optimized to be used like that. Unfortunately it's still a workaround.
@@PatrickRambles Thanks! 😊
Can you do it with an iphone 11
yep
Hi Patrick! Will this work with a iPhone 11?
Hi Jeff, I haven't tested it but I can't see why not.
@@PatrickRambles All right thank you! Also great video.
Hi bro .. hope you doing well. Nice video... Can I use with my xs Max phone.
Thanks! Yes :)
I get a playback error with that lightning/HDMI set up on some apps. The main thing I bought it for was to watch ESPN+ using my phone data on a bigger screen but that playback error prevents me from doing so 😢
Oh man that sucks.
Great video as always Patrick and the new background color looks really nice and classy.👌🏼👏🏼👍🏼
Thanks Shayaan ! New paper 😁
Thank you. You answered my question. Iphone is not that bad after all. But shift screen is crazy good.
Thank you, I'm glad it was useful!
is it a subscription app? It's it is one time payment I will consider it. However, I do not subscribe to apps as a matter of principle.
Hello! I’m very interested, it works on iphone 11?
Hey man. Yes, definitely!
@@PatrickRambles I already have a monitor! Can i just buy the adapter and connect to my monitor? thanks man!!
Yeah, definitely. You can just hook it up via the adapter on an HDMI cable.
Yes, definitely want to see what this does with iPad
On the list for January! :)
if iPhone 14 comes with portless design how can I mirror it to external display with full resolution and no latency ??
Time will tell 😁
@@PatrickRambles thank you
With this, I no longer need to buy a camera, and a computer for my content creation needs. Thank you for sharing. ️ 😅🙏🏼
This works on android phone or tablet ?
Hey, yes! And (de pending on your model) unlike Apple devices, Android and PC support touch screen functionality!
Amazing video, you are very brave to do this when there are almost no videos tackling the iphone desktop issue but we need influencers to encourage apple to do it, I'm subscribing because of this video
I appreciate that!
Thanks for the review. I have been thinking about getting an external portable monitor for when I start traveling again.
Hi Steve! Honestly, I never planned to buy one, but having spent some time with this one, I'm really impressed!
Hey Christian, thanks! In the video I'm using a logitech mx anywhere 2s. No latency :)
I tried connecting my Bluetooth mouse to my iphone and it is not bad at all, it is not mega fast like on my notebook, but usable and precise. On my Samsung S20 it is definitely faster, even set on 60hz.
@@PatrickRambles hey! what about latest Xbox Series gamepad ? :)
Link for that cartoon model on desk😅
Damn, the versatility is unprecedented
You can hook up pretty much anything to it. Pretty cool.
@@PatrickRambles 🔥🔥🔥
What’s the smallest external monitor for iPhone? I’m looking for something for photography, almost like how some cameras have a flip out screen. Thank you! 🙂
Ooh. Good question. Maybe an external camera monitor, they use HDMI as well.
@@PatrickRambles what I mean is, can you tilt the screen to portrait to use all available screen real estate if your phone is also in portrait! Sorry!
Oh lol sorry. I haven't tested that but that's an interesting one. I'll try it out.
Try going to accessibility settings and check the cursur. You can adjust it there!
Thanks.
Hi Patrick great video...I can use the Mouse on the iPhone 12 but not on the external monitor while it’s in shiftscreen
Jamie Johnstone could u get the mouse cursor in shiftscreen to appear. I can only see it in the iPhone 12 screens but not able to use it in shiftscreen and see it on the external monitor
@@teehongkeng6243 Yes this indeed is the same issue I have been having - have not found a resolution yet. :/ :)
What’s the battery life?
Of ?
@@PatrickRambles The item you’re reviewing
Great video! How about charging your iphone at the same time? I think maybe the only way is to use a wireless charger like MagSafe right? Also, of course you can connect desktop-type speakers to this monitor while your iphone's connect via HDMI? Thanks :))
Thanks! If you power the monitor, it will pass through charge your phone.
I don't think it's the display's fault not supporting touch on iPhones or macs - it's just that those devices suck.
I agree with you, it's definitely to do with Apple, not the display.
Really appreciated that video.. helped me with my telework issues...
Thanks man, glad it was useful!
Of course, it's nothing like Dex. Apple hasn't developed a platform yet. This was just a fun little experiment :)
@@PatrickRambles True.
I am hoping 13 will be.
Love em' both.
By the time you get the keyboard, mouse, AV adapter, monitor, cables, stand, battery pack, clam, Shiftscreen, etc, you might as well just get a cheap Chromebook and call it a day.
Hey man. Sure. Or just get a Samsung and use Dex. Or get a laptop. Or even an M1 MacBook. But that wasn't the point of this video. This was just a fun little experiment to see where we can currently push the iPhone.
